Scorpion sting, I don't wanna

tell me that I'm not
lost
Ahh.
Well.
It was a good plan. It wasn't exactly a good plan that he'd been in on, up until the very end, when Solomon barked his dramatic orders, looking like a seasoned battle commander in all the flying dust and the ambient glow from the scorching hot flames licking at Aegle, tens of meters away and up the mountain. He looked so confident, so powerful, right then that Jack almost forgot which hell Solomon Moon had learned those skills. He grimaced in recognition.
Now, laying on the ground, defeated, he wondered how his parents had to feel. Watching their son fight alongside the One-Eyed Dragon. Knowing that the war Merla left her home for, to go fight for their rights, was the same war that held the fearsome Commander Moon's claim to fame. Or infamy, as it should properly be called.
Sometimes, he wondered why he hadn't run, repulsed, and frightened, from the other man's shelter, in the forest.
In those woods, tired, cold, and afraid, maybe he was just more hesitant to be alone, than to share solace with someone who had done so many horrible things, caused so much bloodshed, to people like him and his family; it was a sobering reminder that everyone was watching this fight.
What did they all think, seeing a Faunus fighting alongside "Solomon Bloody Moon," of the Celestial Legion?
It hadn't been until Sol gave the command to get behind cover, that Jack took pause. 'Like Shadecloak smiles.'
There was an emphasis to those words that tugged at his brain, even as he had moved to hide. Not once, in any class he'd ever had with his homeroom teacher, had he seen her so much as look content, let alone happy. It was an odd expression, but it got the point across well enough. He was saying to not take cover. Or it seemed that way, at least.
And that was what had encouraged Jack to attempt to take out Pavo, even when realistically, he should have just stayed out of the fight until he could heal Solomon, and his transformation broke.
He'd charged in, valiantly, inspired by the gravel-mouthed Atlesian's bold visage, and heroic battle cry, and for a second, he'd thought that he might do well in this fight. He thought back to Brigit, and their fight together against the Grimm. That shred of respect that she'd offered him, even just a little bit, as he stood up from the ground, the Grimm around them all defeated and vanished. In hindsight, he had hoped to see that same spark, from his teammates, and from the crowds, and his parents. Even the redhead he had attacked, once he was defeated, and no longer an enemy.
Like an angel of the battlefield, he'd rushed in, sword held high as his entire winged form glowed, intensely white, streaked with silver and black, flashing brighter and bolder at the bullets glancing off of him as he moved with sudden urgency towards the other student.
And yet, it was all for naught.
He hadn't seen the palm strike coming, and didn't even see the blow that had knocked him a clear five meters away from everybody else at all. His Aura, formerly a beacon of light dancing across the ground, faded swiftly into shards of mottled white, and grey, and black.
He lay there, crumpled on the ground for a moment, in surprise. He should have been less careless. Less reckless. Should have thought more about himself- it was like Doc had told him, time and time again. If he didn't stop to think of his own safety, his own health, he could never save the people he needed to save. Jumping off of the cliff to reach Solomon and Seiya in time... And attacking Pavo instead of just waiting, even when he saw Solomon approaching from behind...
In a real fight, he would have been killed. No question about that.
He struggled to his feet. Without his Semblance, he was considerably slower, so he hoped nobody aimed a loose shot at him or anything while he prepared to walk off.
But before he did, he turned to his teammates. Solomon. Seiya. Aegle. First to Solomon and Seiya, he flashed a thumbs up, not wanting to distract them too much from their fighting. Then to Aegle, way up on the mountain, he raised his voice as loud as he could, and he hoped that she could hear him past all the fire and explosions. "Y-y-you got this, Aegle!!! Team SSAJ is g-g-going to w-win!!!" His grin was an awkward, lopsided, thing, and it was tempered by his disappointment that he wouldn't be part of the fight as they went on to victory.
But he had faith in his teammates. They were strong and capable. He'd done all he could do for them, with the choices he'd made. So as he walked off towards the side of the arena, away from the fighting, he kept that smile on his face until he was well out of sight of the cheering crowds.
He might have been booted out, but he still felt like a winner. And the other three were going to push on to the win they deserved. He knew it.
