❝I Was Lightning,
Before The Thunder❞
597 w./ 597 w. total
She was familiar with infamy back in Vacuo. A threat to towns and anyone who wasn't strong enough to oppose her. The Bandit Queen that robbed, pillaged, and...murdered. No one was safe from the blonde hellion who left a bloody swath through the desert with a wicked grin upon her crazed face. The boredom and monotony of it all was what drove the girl to leave her clan and seek something more. A challenge.
It was the 15th Mistral Regional Tournament that finally gave her that spark of excitement. The thrill of battle against others who could put up some sort of fight! She claimed victory unsurprisingly over the other hacks and rode a free ticket to whatever school she wanted. At the time, Rose took it all in. The fame, the money, and the attention was intoxicating to her! The endorsement from the Pumpkin Pete cereal allowed her to coast without a care from school to school until Rosalia had settled upon Haven Academy in Mistral where she continued on with her training.
It was long ago...so imagine Rose's surprise when she received a call from the very same cereal company that once had endorsed her. They reached out to her in regards to a small event that was being set up in Mistral. It was pretty much pure publicity bullshit after the mess involving the toys, considering that they had ties to the Great Grin Company putting their little plastic toys in their boxes.
And...apparently no one wanted anything to do with either company. So they were desperate when calling in the blonde warrior to be a spokesman of sorts. Show up, give an uplifting speech, meet some fans, and give Haven some cred in the process. Sounded legit. Though the girl wasn't one for uplifting garbage...so this was sure to be a train wreck.
The day was bright and sunny out, though a bit nippy from the cold. So she had a nice red scarf around her neck to match her signature jacket. It was zipped up securely to keep her as warm as possible, though the torn jeans did very little to stave off the wind that howled through the district. The stage was modest with the Pumpkin Pete mascot off to the side greeting kids while some suits were going over the details of the event backstage. Rose herself was front and center for all to see, her sword Rebellion sheathed securely on her back as she tucked her hands into her pockets.
When the guys gave her the green light, Rose sighed and turned to the small crowd that was forming. She winked at them as she stepped up to the microphone to speak.
"Hey! How's it goin' everybody? So like that toy attack? That kinda blew, didn't it? Like literally, shit exploded and people got hurt. I know, 'cause I was there tryin' to help save some a' yer asses. Anyway, the good ole boys here at Pumpkin Pete feel for ya, yeah? They wanted to give back to the community after all the terrible things that went down, so they're gonna be donatin' some relief to the district. An' for those who don't know me, I'm a Huntress in trainin' here at Haven. Now some of ya have some mixed feelins' in regards to the place, but we're here to help!"
Rose smiled widely out to the crowd, giving a pause to see their reactions. She really wasn't good at this sort of thing, so the blonde could only hope that they wouldn't start throwing vegetables at her soon!

Vesper didn’t really understand the deal with being a fan of Huntsmen and Huntress.
She understood their job, and it was both exciting and dangerous and they deserved recognition for all of that… but the little Faunus never got how some of them were seen by others almost like they were popstars. She mused on the topic for a moment as she stood in the freezing cold to witness a crappy public performance in the cold… being a part of the problem that she wanted to know the origins about.
Was it like… businesses that started to do it? Did some manufacturers really think we were going to buy their breakfast cereal more if they had some Huntress’ face on it? Did we really wanted to know how they smelled buy getting some perfume with their name on it? Well, maybe some people would want to know how they smelled… but that was not the point.
If it as an idea thought of by the professionals to get a side hustle going… Vesper could respect that to a certain extent. Still, she would want the select group of people everyone depended upon to not need to resort to selling their image to earn a living wage. Like, you don’t want to have every police officer have their own merchandising just to make it through the month.
Regardless of the actual reason why all of this came to be, it was the reality that Vesper was here now. Trying to understand… what it was all about, in a way.
Her father was a huntsman. She knew for a fact that he never, ever, wanted to do anything like this… so that was what gotten Vesper interested in it. She didn’t understand her father. Didn’t really knew what made him tick.
Why he pursuit a dangerous profession risking his life.
Why he left her and mom alone to fend for themselves.
Why he has such trouble telling his daughter that he loved her.
So, in trying to understand him better, she needed to get to know what he liked and disliked. Vesper could have just asked him, but she didn’t want to spend the limit time they had asking him questions that might get him to dislike her daughter. So, she needed to do some research on her own!
She had picked this Rose Phoenix for two reasons.
First, they didn’t ask for an admission fee.
Second, they said there was a chance to get a face-to-face meeting with Rose Phoenix, regional tournament champion of some years ago.
It honestly didn’t seem that exciting… but it was most likely the most popular huntress she was going to just meet like this.
So, Vesper had come prepared to try and get this meeting going. If she could understand some showboating popstar huntress, perhaps she could understand more why her dad hated such kinds of people and through this learn more about him! She was dressed to be picked out as a number #1 fan of this Rose.
Vesper’s outfit was on point for the occasion. She was wearing a T-Shirt with a big old rose flower on the front. It was very cheap, and as she didn’t find any T-Shirts with Rose’s actual face on it at an affordable prize it was also her only option!
In her hands, she was carrying a blond doll that kind of looked like Rose if you looked at it the right way. It was one of those plastic dolls Vesper hated because they couldn’t be used to sleep on. She had traded one of her plushies for it from a shred 8 year old down the street. It was a hard bargain, because everyone knew that plushies had a higher value than plastic dolls, but it was for a good cause.
Lastly, behind her ears Vesper had tucked two roses. Perhaps the most on the nose, but it was within the budget and she could throw them at the starlet to get her attention.
When Vesper arrived at the event, in the stupid cold, it became quite noticeable that she as being treated with having the ‘kid’-label being placed onto her. Some greeter kind of person told her that she could meet the real Pumpkin Pete at the side of the stage when she entered the area. There she was surrounded by kids who were quite certainly half her own age. Vesper looked how the mascot made breakfast related puns for 5 minutes, before handing all of the kids a button personally with a new slogan.
“Eat your daily Pumpkin Pete, to make your breakfast complete!”
When Vesper walked forward to get her special attention from the college kid who tried his darndest, Vesper had a question that she kinda knew the answer to.
“Does eating Pumpkin Pete make my dad love me?”
The mascot looked at Vesper for a moment, seeming to not expect the question. He did give a better answer than the bat Faunus expected. “Sharing a meal together with family can bring wonders, kid!”
Damn… this random breakfast mascot was giving me more support than my actual father…
Still with that realisation stuck in her head, the Faunus made sure she had a somewhat front row standing spot at the stage. She only had to elbow two kids to get there. Don’t worry, it wasn’t all that hard!
Vesper looked at the blond belle of the ball arrived on stage and seemed to speak some words. Starting out that people got hurt and that stuff exploded kinda spoiled the mouth a bit for as far as Vesper could tell. After that telling outright that her own school was seen as having a revolving door policy for crazies also didn’t landed as well as Rose thought it might.
Wanting to help the struggling starlet, Vesper spoke up after the first paragraph in reaction. Setting up perhaps a higher kiddy voice than she normally would speak with, as well as holding up the blond doll.
“Tell us what you did, Rose! Did you kick some toys butt? We wanna hear about all the cool stuff you did to protect us and keep us safe!”
If she couldn’t work with that, she was really on her own and Vesper spent her time haggling with Viola down the street for this doll for nothing!

❝I Was Lightning,
Before The Thunder❞

The crowd was so silent that she could practically hear the crickets. *Oof, tough fuckin' audience! I guess they don't wanna hear shit from a prompter...* She stood center stage and looked out at the small gathering of people, all staring up at her. Shit, this was a big mistake! Why, of all people, would they want HER talking these people? Rose was a fighter, not a talker! And now she couldn't even kill these people to save face!
As she was about to turn towards the suits behind the stage, a high pitched voice rang out. Rose planted her foot solidly down on the stage and put all weight against it, swinging her body around to focus on the sound. It was a tiny little girl with a sweet and innocent sorta look on her face. Not only that, but she was fucking decked out from head to toe in so much merch that it made Rose visibly start to snicker. Wait, they made that much shit from my brand? The fuck? Jeez dude...didn't know I had any die hard fans!
Rose pointed at the girl, giving a wide toothed grin at her. She was cute, that's for sure, and there was even a Rose doll clutched tightly in her little hands. D'awww so cute! Holy shit dude! There was no way that she could let this girl down!
"Damn straight I did! Ya don't think I'd just sit back while them bastards ran amok? Nah fam, when I saw that they were buildin' a base of operations, I dashed in with mah semblance! Since you were so kind to ask, here! Lemme show ya!"
She clutched her hands to her sides, tightly holding her fists out in a flexing pose with her arms raised up slightly. The wind about her kicked up, her teeth widened into a wicked grin, and lightning began to spark around her.
"Every Huntsman has this. It's known as a semblance, as you all may or may not know. Mine is known as Marauder! Unlike most auras, this one gives off a serious field of lightnin' and boosts mah speed and makes it so I can take real serious hits!"
Her muscles flexed, bulging a bit as Rose widened her stance. The blonde's thighs clenched ridiculously firm and the electricity swirled more violently, kicking up dust about her form like a small tornado.
"Each power increases based on experience. It makes us into living super heroes! So, as you see, this..."
Rosalia unsheathed her sword then and drove it hard into the stage, shattering the wood with her pure strength. She pressed the activator switch underneath the greatsword's pommel and the dust kicked to life! Red flames ignited around the blade and swirled around even more lightning that licked teasingly at Rose's own bodily energy! The suits behind her were backing away and even the crowd was beginning to perk up in awe! The semblance was raging around Rose as she gripped the burning blade and she focused her attention on Vesper.
"Is...to go...even further...BEYOND!"
She shouted the last line as her fist ripped the sword from the ground and sliced upward! At the last moment, the dust fired straight up as a terrifying beam of scarlet force that soared ever higher and higher! At the zenith of it's climb, the beam erupted in a mass explosion of red that lit up the stage and accentuated the colors of Rosalia. The blond stood with a look of conviction on her face, eyes burning a radiant jade, hand on one hip, and sword pointed straight up towards the sky!
"Huntsmen and Huntresses! We are here to kick all sorts of ass and NO ONE is gonna fuck with our city! We are Mistral! We ARE REMNANT!"
