❝ WORDS: 1454 | TWC: 1454 HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS Orphanage. Noun. "A residential institution for the care and education of orphans." In other words, a building that apparently mattered a lot more than she had assumed, when she'd walked into it, still half-asleep, but trying to be helpful, and blew up a hallway full of rubble and furniture. She hadn't had the slightest clue what the place was supposed to be, when she saw Chloro and Berwyn inside, trying to really slowly clear the junk out of the way. All she knew was that it didn't look like any civilians were on the other side of the building, and nobody seemed to be trapped in the rubble. Granted, she felt awful about that decision now, in large part because she really hadn't had any way of knowing that at the time. She had just assumed nobody was stuck in the rubble- correctly, but that didn't make it any less reckless. But what else was she supposed to have done? Well, probably not that. But she wasn't good at anything else. She just broke stuff. And ruined everything. Now Chloro and Berwyn probably hated her, even though she was just trying to hurry things along so the three of them could get back to stopping what she had, at the time, assumed to be a huge, scary, dangerous robot invasion, instead of just a bunch of freaky toys. She didn't think it was fair that Lynn had gotten fired because of her. In fact, she was a little mad at Chloro and Berwyn for reporting her over that. Especially since she had tried to repair the orphanage, and Berwyn herself told her not to worry about it, and that they were moving the children (who she hadn't known even lived there) somewhere safer. It was frustrating. And it was just a building, anyways. The orphans were safe again, and had a warm place to stay, so why did it matter if she had damaged the building more? The toys had already blown up parts of it and damaged the place before she even got there. That wasn't worth getting Lynn fired for. She didn't even think she was especially out of line this time. Reckless, and a little too hasty, sure, but she had been prepared to fix her mistakes. Now she couldn't- she couldn't get Lynn her job back, which was upsetting. She'd liked Lynn a lot. She was a good teacher, and a good counselor, and a good friend. She had helped Carmim get through some of the worst and hardest low points in her life so far, and not having that support anymore was a pretty harsh blow to her already-difficult realizations about her own usefulness as a Huntress. She wasn't even sure anymore if she was cut out for this career. Her uncle was probably disappointed in her. She was too, frankly. This whole Haven thing wasn't panning out the way she had initially hoped it would. She felt lost, and in way over her head, but at this point, it wasn't like she had a better option. She didn't really have a lot of other useful skills, and the ones she did have, she doubted she would be completely happy making a living in those fields. She wasn't good enough at gardening to try and fill the hole Holly had left completely, even if she was still the Gardenin Club President, in her absence. And while she was really good with carpentry, and woodworking in general, she wasn't especially great at it, and she doubted she could do very much on her own. And she didn't know the first thing about applying to work somewhere with a group of people that did that kind of thing. More to the point, she had invested so much energy into her dream of helping save people, she couldn't in good conscience just settle for getting a regular job in Mistral, where she didn't feel like she was needed. She belonged back in Vacuo. Defending the villages that couldn't defend themselves. Or even doing that in Mistral- just not in the city. And she couldn't go home either. Not without her license. Her parents would be heart-broken- they'd sent her to Mistral to be safe. and if she came back without being a Huntress, then she might as well have just stayed in Mistral. They wouldn't be entirely pleased about her coming back as a Huntress either, but at least then, she would have a reason to stay, and they could rest easier knowing she was strong enough to protect them, and herself... So she was ultimately stuck in Mistral, at Haven. Because any other option meant a failure that she couldn't accept for herself. She frowned, on her way to the training facility. Hopefully she was done using up second chances, at least. She hadn't met with her new professor yet, since she had only just been hired a few days ago, and was settling in before classes resumed. This was, as far as she knew, the first "class" on the schedule, and it was a new one for both of them. Mandated semblance training. It was something she was uncertain about, but hopeful for. She was aware of her semblance's strength. Perhaps more aware than anybody else was, even. She could feel the power ripple through her body whenever she used it; could feel the massive power barely contained by her Aura. She wasn't sure how anybody else trained their semblance, actually. She rarely, if ever, intentionally trained her abilities anymore, because to her, it felt like she didn't need to- it felt like it was growing in power with every use, like a pool of strength that she wasn't adding to, so much as opening the faucet more, and letting more of it out each time. With that great power, though, came a loss of control. She wasn't very good at controlling the power of her blasts, to the point that without trying, all of them were launched at full strength. She had found some compromises, like carrying a much smaller drum, but that wasn't great, because sometimes she really did need her maximum strength. She just needed finesse a lot more often. Hopefully this new teacher would be able to help her with that. She stepped into the building, a stand-alone indoor range for high firepower training, specifically. It hadn't been used much in recent years, actually; this facility was built for students with much stronger semblances than the norm, as incredibly strong abilities would just rip through the normal training grounds so much that the school would need to spend a lot more money than it had repairing them. This was much more cost-effective, as the building itself was constructed with incredibly thick and durable material lining the walls, floors, and ceilings, as well as the target stands and other important materials. It was the only training ground on Haven's campus now that could withstand her blasts at full strength. The last student to use this facility regularly for training was Cressida Fox, who she knew of a little bit, from overhearing Colton and others talking about her. She was apparently really strong too, though she never seemed to have had the problems Carmim had with limiting her destructive capacities. And now she was stepping through the door. It was a little exciting. The room itself (because the entire massive building was essentially a single room) was long and wide, with a variety of differently shaped targets on different types of racks, made of an assortment of materials. It was surprisingly well-kept for how little it had been used lately. She stood near the entrance, and looked around for her teacher. She had gotten there fairly early, so she wasn't sure if she had gotten there first, or if the new professor was already here, but out of sight. Whichever the case, when she saw her, the little redhead would give a wave and a smile, though perhaps one a little more muted than she was especially known for. Not that she imagined the new teacher would know how she usually smiled anyways... She would much rather be doing this with Lynn, since that was someone she knew, and had really come to enjoy working with. But Lynn was gone, and that was her fault. So now she had to meet her replacement, and start all over from scratch. "Hello. You are Professor Zolotova?" She struggled a bit with the clearly Mistrallian name, which was just a little tricky for her tongue to pronounce exactly right. "It is nice to meet you, I am Carmim. I am here for my first day of Semblance Control lessons." |
