Looking back at herself in the bathroom mirror, the azul huntress splashes water over her face to wash off whatever tiredness lingered across her features. Shaking off the remaining wetness like a dog, Ruqa reappears in the hallway, out into the quad, with renewed energy at least somewhat. She was on her way to her next class, like always, but she privately didn't like the fact that she was. So she stopped halfway and dragged her eyes over to a group of other students doing the very thing she was supposed to. Going to class and training to be heroes or something close to them. Yet she didn't want to be a part of that, to be a part of whatever this thing that Haven Academy offered. Maybe she wanted out.
Despite enjoying her time at Haven it was starting to feel like life was getting stale. She was getting used to the new schedules and routines of Haven Academy life but the sameness was getting to her. So she had to wonder, why she bothered enrolling into a huntsman academy anyway.
She hadn't changed. She hasn't grown. She was still the same Ruqa since she first enrolled in this school. It was starting to feel like she wasn't getting the most out of her life.
Maybe it was time to hang up the towel and ask her brother, Cassander, if he was still interested in taking on an assistant, as though someone as cool and educated as him would need someone who's potential only extended as far as coffee jockey.
She kept going on this line of thought, thinking about what she could do if she suddenly stopped wanting to be a huntress. She could be a bodyguard to a big wig middle manager over in the Wind District, or a combat teaching assistant at Argus Youth Combat Academy, only expected to fight at the level of other pre-teens. She could let herself sink to the level of a common criminal, though some people already saw her as a thug so maybe that fit already.
Out of those options bodyguard seemed like a cushy job. Just protect some civie without an aura that was more scared of his own shadow than actually threatened by assasination attempts. Only depends on who would hire her.
Should she send out resumes? Sounds like a lot of work...
Was she actually considering it?
....naaaah
Ruqa laughed.
Sometimes you just needed to talk yourself out of dumb ideas. Was it such a crime to think about alternative employment? Please. Ruqa was still in the huntress gig for life! After all she's already spent so much time training at Haven that dropping out just seemed like such a waste. She'll get that Huntsman Liscence and decide what to do with it later. That is, unless something more interesting came across Ruqa first.
Still she wasn't getting anywhere like this. She wasn't in the mood for another Shadecloak class. It wasn't like an important one anyway, just Wilderness Survival lessons. Like, did they really needed to know which berries were edible and which would make them puke sangria? Perhaps one day in the future she might regret missing this lesson. Maybe today was the only lecture they were ever going to have on how to escape quicksand and someday Ruqa would be eyebrow deep in sand, thinking to herself: Damn I probably shouldn't have skipped Wilderness Survival class.
Don't jinx it Ruqa, it was still a possibility.
Nah, she just needed to shake things up, kick routine to the curb. So, no she wasn't going to class today. She could probably hide back in her dorm room, not that anyone would notice her missing. Skipping class by herself kind of sucked though because that would just force her to be alone with her thoughts and check her scroll.
She sighed, unable to come with an idea of who to call, and resigned herself to walk in the opposite direction of Shadecloaks class.

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS
"...and so during t'e war, A- Mantle, made a big effort to build up t'eir defenses wit' t'e new technology t'at t'ey were inventing, which led to t'eir Dust Mining industry being a huge source of money for t'e kingdom."
Bell rang.
Carmim glanced up at Mrs. Long, who gave an approving nod. Class dismissed, just as she finished her presentation on the industry of war-time Mantle. Normally, Carmim wouldn't mind a little more History of the Great War, but today she was just ready to make it back to her room and sleep.
Not even that- she was feeling a little burnt out lately, with everything that had been going on, and no real time to process it.
Dust Ward Killer, orphanages, and lately, everything with the perimeter project... She still couldn't believe that she had taken down a huge Manticore like that with just one shot of her Semblance. It was insane. Just brought her back to her very first mission, aboard the Argus Limited... Back then, her Semblance had only begun its rapid growth. Back when detonating a bomb through a steel door was impressive, even if she hadn't been able to pierce the door on her own.
Now her power was so ridiculous, she could vaporize a Grimm many times her size in an instant. It had been one of the two absolutely monstrous feats talked about that day, along with the white-hot flames that completely incinerated the Apathy that threatened to leave everyone, including her, completely defenseless.
She mused on that fact as she walked towards the dorms to grab a quick change of clothes before her next class. Shadecloak's Wilderness Survival. She grimaced at the thought. It was just going to be more of the same- rude lioness not caring about any of her students, just reciting information and making them pick berries for hours, or cut firewood. Carmim knew how to cut firewood! And she didn't need a spiteful, unfeeling, jerk to teach her how.
She wondered if she would grow to be as awful as Shadecloak some day.
The thought had crossed her mind more than once lately, in fact. While maybe not the most self-aware of trainees, the little redhead could see quite clearly that recent events had been making her a little more jaded, a little more bitter than she liked. What was once a cheery optimist with shatterproof ideals was sliding down a slippery slope into cynicism.
It was hard.
Everything was hard. It was all just too frustrating.
Maybe this was how all Huntresses wound up.
Burnt out, pissed off, and resigned to making really shitty bad calls because that was what was expected of them. She didn't want to be anything like that, but she could see the path unfolding before her. It wasn't pleasant to think about. Then again, neither were most of the things weighing on her mind lately.
She was strong, but her shoulders couldn't take any more of the world bearing down on them- between Holly's death, Qiu'li's reappearance, and his death, again, and the attacks on the city walls, she was on edge.
Wouldn't a break be nice?
She asked, out into the universe. And the universe answered, of course.
An answer in the form of a very familiar face standing over a foot taller than her. Ruqa Reyes. Just seeing her approaching, as Carmim exited her dorm room, freshly clad in her gym clothes, brought a smile to her face.
Why didn't they hang out more?
She'd always liked Ruqa, and looked up to her a good bit since their first mission together, all the way back on the train, in 25 AV. Felt like forever ago, but it was only two years- if that. And she always saw her around, in classes. But she couldn't remember the last time they really just took the time to chill out and have some fun.
That was what she really needed. Too bad it was time for class.
"Ruqa! Hello, my friend. How are you?" She gave a little wave, and stopped to chat for a moment. Not like she was in a big hurry to get to her least favorite professor's class anyways.
In fact...
Nah... She couldn't...
Could she...?

A cheerful voice rings through the hallway calling her name and while it has been a while since they have spoken Ruqa recognizes the sound of Carmin's voice immediately. The Azul huntress face instantly lights up to be the brightest thing in the hallway. She gives a friendly whistle and walks over to her old classmate.
"Yo Carmin~ How's my favourite redhead??," says Ruqa who attempts to ruffle the shorter girl's hair so long as she doesn't reject the casual contact.
"It has been a dog's age since I last saw you~" Ruqa starts but tilts her head to the side thinking about it more. "I mean that's not true true. I saw the news of you blasting that Manticore into particulate matter."
Ruqa's smile sticks on her face but her shoulers sag a bit and she mutters under her breath. "...I didn't even know you could even do that. Jeez Carmin..."
Truly that was a mindblowing feat that was something would expect from a liscenced huntsman but to see it coming from a student in their second year was just insane. Ruqa's thoughts about Carmin were hard to piece together. She was of the opinion that the girl was nice enough but strangely enough in their earlier experiences together Ruqa was largely unimpressed. Not to be mean or anything, after all it was only in their first year, but Ruqa had always associated her with Nik which wasn't the best light to be held in. But now? Now Carmin was a crazy powerful huntress in a league of her own.
Knowing that Carmin was capable of taking out a Manticore by herself, what was Ruqa compared to that?
"That must be a real story to tell eh???" Ruqa smirks, nudging Carmin playfully.
She stops what she's doing for a moment and studies the other girl carefully.
"Say, Carmin, you feeling one hundred percent?" Ruqa says, toning her energy down to a softer level.
Ruqa was no empath by any means. Hell some people called her out on how careless she could be about other people's feelings. But call it intuition or seeing something in the girls face, something about this didn't vibe with Ruqa which should not have been the case with the musically inclined huntress. It would have been pretentious to address it, after all Carmin and Ruqa were friendly enough but not close enough to know every emotion they have ever had. Nevertheless, ever since the girls sleepover Ruqa saw Carmin as the happiest little Vacuoan there ever was and was surprised that image didn't match up anymore. Again, more the fool for Ruqa if she was looking to deeply into things but she felt a bit obligated to at least be polite.
Ruqa looks to Carmin with a sheepish smile.
"I'm thinking of skipping wilderness survival and taking a me-day. Cause like it is such a nice day out, why end it off spending it in Shadecloaks class, right?" Ruqa says, looking into the distance, intentionally avoiding Carmin's eyes. "So I'm thinking, since I'm such a generous girl and all, that I could make it a you-day too."
"Whatdya say? It'll be fun~" Ruqa chimes, turning back to Carmin with a gleam to her eyes. WC: 539/ TWC: 1205 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb

Each beat of the drum tells a story, About a little girl, Who swore she'd save the world.
It was impossible to resist the smile welling up as the much-taller trainee ruffled her hair.
Yeah, stopping to talk to Ruqa was a good idea.
She was immediately in a better mood than she'd been in before. Still not her usual chipper self, entirely, but a bit better. She gazed back up at her friend. "Just got out of Mrs. Long's class. How about you?" Feeling a little better, however, didn't mean she felt good enough to say she felt fine when she wasn't sure if she did or not.
Especially when the next topic brought her stomach back down into her legs.
She laughed at Ruqa's Manticore comments, the kind of sheepish and awkward laugh of someone who appreciates the sentiment, but wishes the conversation could do a 180 away from where it had gone.
Sure, it was impressive, but it wasn't like it was anything she'd done. Her semblance was just really strong. And getting stronger, every time she used it, whether she wanted that or not. Frankly, she'd rather just be normal.
Or even a little bigger than normal- funny enough, she wanted to be more like Ruqa. Ruqa was good at a lot of things. She had a really strong semblance too, but it was way more useful than hers. And the four-armed girl could do a lot more too. She could fight when she had to, or she could rescue people, or transport important things, or even just something as simple as being able to arrest a criminal without launching them into space first.
"Haha... Yeah, it was a little crazy."
Seems she was glum enough to catch Ruqa's attention. She froze up, as her thin veil was seen through like it wasn't there; she didn't really have an answer, but she also didn't seem to need one, as the other girl continued pretty soon after asking what was essentially a rhetorical question. It was pretty clear that she wasn't, in fact, one hundred percent.
She hadn't been, for a while.
She blinked and stared up at Ruqa as the ideas coming out of her mouth trickled down to Carmim's ears.
It was a nice day outside...
"A me-day? Well. A me-and-you-day?" It felt a bit like a foreign concept, after the past few months. Just taking some time to unwind. Turn her brain off. To relax. Almost felt wrong. Like it was somehow illegal to take care of herself, instead of agonizing over the past and future.
She'd sort of forgotten that she lived in the present.
And skipping class...?
As much as she disliked Shadecloak, she had never really considered cutting class before. That felt even more wrong than taking a day for self-care. But she wasn't exactly opposed to the idea, no matter how nervous the prospect made her. It was a bit exciting, even, in its own way.
Ruqa beamed down at her, and she met her gaze with a grin. "That does sound like lots of fun. Okay. I am in."
Whatever "in" meant, in this case.
She glanced around, trying to think of somewhere cool to go, or something fun to do.
"Hmm..."

Ruqa had to scoff at Carmim's lukewarm story telling. She wanted details, damn it! Of course it had to be crazy, it was a Manitcore! Those weren't trashmob Grimm, those were real monsters that most trainees wouldn't be able to take down on their own. Ruqa would absolutely be bringing that subject back up to get the full story from Carmim. Hell, she wouldn't mind a demonstration so she could see how much Carmim has grown!
Of course, that might just emphasize the power gap between them which Ruqa was nearly certain was something significant. Her powers were growing steadily, having acquired a few new gimmicks to incorporate into her martial arts, yet her skills were never enough to secure reliable wins. Maybe seeing Carmim in action would help her to see what she was missing in her combat arsenal.
There was a brief hesitation as the red head Vacuoan weighs the pros and cons of skipping class, evidently the allure of hanging out with THE Ruqa Reyes wasn't enough to instantly convince Carmim. She supposed it was nice that Carmim wasn't a slacker like some other lazy trainees but she also thought that it was exactly the kind of reason for someone to cut lose once in a while. Being too stiff in your daily life would just make you too stiff in a fight. A good huntress had to be flexible with her time and energy. At least, that was the excuse Ruqa usually gave when she wanted to procrastinate and do something more interesting.
But in the end, Ruqa's charms win Carmim over, being such a bad influence on the hardworking trainee. "Hell yeah~ Thanks for keeping me company, I'll make sure you'll have fun today!" Ruqa promises cheerfully, making it a point not to let Carmim down. They were going to have a good time, no matter what!
Not knowing what Carmim would like the most, Ruqa spitballs a few ideas to the other girl. Thinking back to the sleepover, Ruqa assumed that Carmim probably liked movies. They could go to the cinema for a quick movie flick and be back by dinner. Or maybe, assuming Carmim had the energy for it, they could hit a karaoke joint! There were a bunch of karaoke places in town that Ruqa had her eye on, some where you could rent a booth for real cheap. "We could take a bus down to midtown, maybe catch a movie!" says Ruqa with an eager smile. "If there's nothing interesting on, there is also a cool karaoke place I could take you over to! If you're feeling down, singing your lungs out can really lift your spirits!"
Picking her brain for more ideas, Ruqa thinks noisily as she gives Carmim a few more options.
"And, uh, if you want something chill, I guess we could just... walk around the city, see the sights. Maybe hit a restaurant if there are good reviews." she suggests a bit lamely. Ruqa, herself, didn't go out into the city very often and she would not be the right person to ask about the latest popular activities to do in Mistral. But it wasn't as though Carmim would judge her for it, in fact, Ruqa guessed that they would probably be easily impressed by whatever trendy thing that was suddenly fashionable to do in the Wind and Cloud District. "Or just do grocery shopping I guess" Ruqa suggests finally. "I don't know if you need anything or cook on your own. I haven't been to the supermarket in a while and we could just shop and talk and all that."
"Listen, I'm open to any ideas you've got. Doesn't really matter to me, I just wanna waste some time. Anything you really wanna do today?" WC: 629/ TWC: 1834 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb

Each beat of the drum tells a story, About a little girl, Who swore she'd save the world.
She just loved Ruqa's energy.
It was another thing she envied about her friend- boundless confidence and charisma. And she was always having fun! Carmim wanted to feel that way. Lately, she hadn't been having much fun. She was in over her head a lot, and it was getting to her. And as far as confidence and charisma went, she had about zero, and zero, of either. Sure, she was friendly, and at least before things starting getting harder for her, energetic and excitable. But people didn't really think of her as the life of any parties or anything.
And confidence? Nah.
Right out the window. She was about as sure of herself as she was sure of the weatherman.
And she'd sooner trust a Beowolf than one of his predictions...
Still, she grinned a little wider as Ruqa proclaimed her guarantee of fun times. Her mood was steadily lifting, and now her mind was abuzz with fun ideas for things they could do.
Ruqa's suggestions weren't bad either. Movies, food, sightseeing... All things she liked to do. Mistral was a lot bigger than Bulaani, so even though she'd been at Haven for a while now, she still hadn't managed to see everything there was to see yet, and there was plenty of Mistralian food she hadn't tried yet too. And she probably did need to do some grocery shopping. Not that she or Aegle really cooked much; theirs was very much a takeout and delivery dorm, and by this point, the pizza guy knew her name.
Lots of things to do. But one stuck out...
"Carry-what-now? What's that?" She cocked her head to the side at the mention of going to do karaoke. She'd never heard of it before, but if it involved singing, it sounded pretty fun. She was willing to just take Ruqa's word for it, on that one. "Whatever it is, it sounds fun! I vote for that one. Which way is the uh... karry-okay?"
