It had been several days, weeks in fact, since Nikolas had returned to Haven Academy on a stretcher. Sedated, ofcourse, because he would attempt to get up and walk despite his injuries and despite whatever the doctors in Argus advised him. So they had to sedate him for the entire trip back to Haven, where he had woken up in one of the many beds in the infirmary, with actual leather straps holding him down, one across his waist and one across his shins.
[break][break]
He had stirred before, moments of lucidity that gave way to exponential increases of rage. It would always be heralded by the ECG going crazy as his heart rate skyrocketed, pure will power fueled by anger and hatred, most of it aimed at himself, trying to force himself to get up and walk off the injury. Yet he had relented to the bindings, usually tiring himself out back into unconsciousness. But perhaps a day or two of this, he woke up with much less aggression. Just a blank stare at the ceiling, nothing but a hitch to the ECG announcing his return to the world of the conscious.
[break][break]
He was confined to the bed, as was made obvious my the leather straps, but he wasn't fighting to get out anymore, which was an improvement. He took his time to reflect and brood, to check up on himself as best as he could. His chest was completely bandaged up, the smell of medicine and something that reminded him of aloe vera hanging to the clean wraps. His neck and face was left uncovered, and feeling them with his hands had told him that there was no scarring in that area, aside from some difference in texture along certain folds of skin on his neck. Perhaps ghostly impressions of the burns that had been there. But Nikolas had no doubts about the fact that he would definitely have scars on his chest.
[break][break]
To be burned by the element he was so synonymous with in identity. The irony did not escape him. It was probably some higher power's fucked up way of backhanding him and telling him that he had fucked up. And he had. Mistakes were something that was common to humans as a whole. It was something that was common to him. He had made many mistakes in his short life that he had come to regret. And no doubt there would be future mistakes that he would make. There was only one thing to take from those. To learn, and never repeat. This was his wake up call, in a way of sorts. He had lost his cool, he had lost his composure. The bloodlust had gotten to him and made him reckless, and he had paid the price for it in disgrace. For one who held himself so high, he had fallen very, very far.
[break][break]
His days had passed with relative monotony in hazy brooding. Doctor Yuki had not interacted with him much aside from coming in to check his vitals and reports, saying she'd have words with him when he was more cognizant while staring daggers at him. Argent had come in, and shared scarce words, which Nikolas appreciated. They had a strange sort of chemistry that didn't require words, whenever Nikolas wasn't throwing scathing remarks about the fellow. At this point, Nikolas could probably also believe that Argent had gotten familiar with the fact that Nikolas was abrasive like that, without actually meaning ill intent... Most of the time.
[break][break]
Qiu'li had visited too, and that was also an interaction of scarce words. Simply an inquiry of health, a response, a well wish and departure. And Nikolas had even seen a familiar purple head pop in between the doors once. Kishka had peeked inside, found him, narrowed her eyes at him, while Nikolas had simply stared flatly back. That exchange had lasted a few seconds, without word or motion, before Kishka had simply left. That was as much his cousin was willing to do to assuage her natural worries of his health. He was perfectly fine with that too. Distance was something he was comfortable with.
[break][break]
What he wasn't super comfortable with, however, was... Carmim.
[break][break]
The insufferably overly friendly redhead had visited him every single day, without fail, spending at least an hour just prattling off to him about this and that, bringing with her filthy rabbit food that consisted of fruits and veggies, and cheese that made the entire room stink so bad that even Doctor Yuki had forbade her from bringing that into the room. Nikolas had tried everything. He had tried ignoring her while staring flatly at her, she had simply continued. He had tried feigning unconsciousness, she had continued talking to him like he was awake. He had tried telling her to leave him alone, and she had responded with 'he needed friendship'. He had gotten so fed up with her forcing her company and her friendship on him that he had done what Nikolas always did when feeling cornered; he had lashed out verbally at her. Telling her he didn't need a friend, and especially not someone like her to coddle his weakness. Carmim had actually looked hurt at that and left soon after, and had not returned for a visit today. Nikolas actually felt a twinge of guilt at doing that to the poor girl, who had just been looking after someone she considered a friend. Despite how annoying she could be, her feelings came from a good place. Nikolas just wasn't feeling very much in receiving them at the moment... Or ever. Friendship was a thing that he tended to distance himself from.
[break][break]
After all, the last time it happened, everyone died.
[break][break]
So Nikolas Burzanov lay in his bed, staring at nothing in particular his thoughts clouded around in his head, the silver lighter in his hand flicking open and closed with his absent motions. Flick. Click. Flick. Click. A familiar motion, even if he didn't light it, as he did not have his pack on him. The Doctor had confiscated it from him upon arrival, saying he could have it back when he got his ass fixed. But she let him keep the lighter, on grounds that if he set off the smoke detectors or burned anything, she'd throw his ass into the fire. He wondered when she would come to actually talk to him, as she said she would. He was as awake as he was going to get for now. Perhaps today would be the day.[break]
