The Mistral Regional Tournament was the highlight of every school year, and a chance for students and newcomers alike to show their skills and prove worthy of admission to one of the four Huntsman Academies spread throughout Remnant. While Haven Academy certainly had sent its scouts to oversee the tournament, one did not have to look very long to find the military uniforms of Atlas representatives or the sigil of Beacon Academy on the clothes of their scouts either. This tournament was one on one, and sixty-four of the very best of the young men and women that Mistral had to offer were all here to show the world what they could do and make a name for themselves.
Sanctum Academy was the main combat school in the region and the most respected when it came to producing the most candidates for Haven Academy, but it was not the only feeder school in the area. Indeed, there were two other primary combat schools that sent members in the region as well: Arcadia and Forge Academies. There were other wild cards as well, because no one in the age range was declined if they could pass the preliminary rounds to make it to the final roster for the tournament, but nobody expected these wild cards to really get anywhere. These spots were left open for people who lived outside the cities like the tribes of nomads who often had combat skills fighting against Grimm but no formal education or verifiable background to get admission to these primary combat schools. Nevertheless, it was the wish of Haven Academy that spots for these people opened up… but it was clear that the crowd favored the ‘home team’ as it were who had spent the last few years training to achieve their dreams of being a huntsman or huntress.
The bracket was single elimination with two sides, the Blue for the left side and the White for the right side. Historically, the winner of the tournament tended to trend more towards the white side for one reason or another so that bracket tended to get more attention in the opening rounds. Every round of the tournament would be televised with all the bells and whistles, and once the later rounds started most of the kingdom would be watching the proceedings with great interest. A good showing at the tournament meant that the next year’s students showed promise, and that the citizens could sleep easier knowing the talent level required to even get into one of the Big Four Academies of Remnant was absurdly high… and those very same men and women with four years of advanced combat training came out as fully fledged huntsmen and huntresses to defend mankind from the Creatures of Grimm.
The rules for this tournament itself were simple, the fight went on until one of the two entrants was either knocked off of the arena, their aura was fully depleted, or conceded the match. If both participants are knocked off of the arena at the same time, then the first one to get their entire body back on the arena itself is declared the winner. If two people’s aura drops at the same time, the match is considered a draw and a rematch is scheduled at the next available open timeslot to declare a definitive winner. There have never been two draws in a row, so it is up in the air what would happen if that were to occur.
The fighting area itself is white concrete measuring approximately forty meters by forty meters raised about five feet in the air. The concrete itself is scuffed and shows signs of use, because it was on this area that all previous tournaments were fought on. The damage dealt in previous years was repaired, sure, but signs of that repair still remain. The area around the fighting area is typical of a sports stadium, with rows and levels of seating arranged in a circle around the main event. Up in the air, there were also cameras rigged to rails in order to track and broadcast the action on a four-sided television screen above the fighting area to spectators even in the worst seats. The Mistral Regional Tournament was very much an event that attracted a large crowd and was one time of the year where people from many different villages and cities outside of the capital came together to watch the next generation of huntsmen in action.
This match was part of the first round, which meant that typically neither contestant had a lot of knowledge as to what the other person was capable of. This was the round where nobody knew what was going to happen, and betting was rampant based off of the outward appearance or pedigree of the people participating. Sanctum Academy students were generally thought of as the favorites in any round they didn’t face off against each other, but upsets can and did happen at every stage of the tournament. Sanctum Academy students got a free ride to this stage, but everyone else had to fight their way through the preliminary rounds in order to make the final sixty-four that would make it to the exhibition rounds.
This particular bout, though, wasn’t like all the others. This bout held the winner of last year’s tournament, Colton Deraine of Sanctum Academy and native to Argus, looking to take his first step into reclaiming his title. His opponent was a relative unknown from Forge Academy who was also seventeen but did not participate in the previous year’s tournament named Cho Tanner. The defending champion of course was the odds-on favorite to take this victory over an unknown challenger, but there were always those who decided to bet for the underdog for the small chance of having a huge return on investment.
The two names had flashed up on the display, and both participants were almost ready to step out into the ring and make their grand entrance in the 15th Mistral Regional Tournament. Aura meters were also on full display next to images of both of their faces, with each one starting at 100. The match was about to begin.
