The Mistral Regional Tournament was the highlight of every school year, and a chance for students and newcomers alike to show their skills and prove worthy of admission to one of the four Huntsman Academies spread throughout Remnant. While Haven Academy certainly had sent its scouts to oversee the tournament, one did not have to look very long to find the military uniforms of Atlas representatives or the sigil of Beacon Academy on the clothes of their scouts either. This tournament was one on one, and sixty-four of the very best of the young men and women that Mistral had to offer were all here to show the world what they could do and make a name for themselves.
The bracket was single elimination with two sides, the Blue for the left side and the White for the right side. Historically, the winner of the tournament tended to trend more towards the white side for one reason or another so that bracket tended to get more attention in the opening rounds. Every round of the tournament would be televised with all the bells and whistles, and once the later rounds started most of the kingdom would be watching the proceedings with great interest. A good showing at the tournament meant that the next year’s students showed promise, and that the citizens could sleep easier knowing the talent level required to even get into one of the Big Four Academies of Remnant was absurdly high… and those very same men and women with four years of advanced combat training came out as fully fledged huntsmen and huntresses to defend mankind from the Creatures of Grimm.
The rules for this tournament itself were simple, the fight went on until one of the two entrants was either knocked off of the arena, their aura was fully depleted, or conceded the match. If both participants are knocked off of the arena at the same time, then the first one to get their entire body back on the arena itself is declared the winner. If two people’s aura drops at the same time, the match is considered a draw and a rematch is scheduled at the next available open timeslot to declare a definitive winner. There have never been two draws in a row, so it is up in the air what would happen if that were to occur. Each participant started the match approximately fifteen meters away from each other on opposite ends of the arena, and the match started when the announcer gave the command.
The fighting area itself is white concrete measuring approximately forty meters by forty meters raised about five feet in the air in the shape of a square that was designed to be completely flat but wasn’t completely. The concrete itself is scuffed and shows signs of use, because it was on this area that all previous tournaments were fought on. The damage dealt in previous years was repaired, sure, but signs of that repair still remain. The area around the fighting area is typical of a sports stadium, with rows and levels of seating arranged in a circle around the main event. Up in the air, there were also cameras rigged to rails in order to track and broadcast the action on a four-sided television screen above the fighting area to spectators even in the worst seats. The Mistral Regional Tournament was very much an event that attracted a large crowd and was one time of the year where people from many different villages and cities outside of the capital came together to watch the next generation of huntsmen in action.
This particular bout was part of the first round, which meant that typically neither contestant had a lot of knowledge as to what the other person was capable of. This was the round where nobody knew what was going to happen, and betting was rampant based off of the outward appearance or pedigree of the person participating. In this case, the betting odds were very much in favor with the one competitor out of the two who had any sort of pedigree worth talking about. One was the scion of a famous family of Huntsmen and was near the top of their class at Signal Academy, and the other… well, was in the upper third of the student body in the third ranked Forge Academy in Mistral. Third in the Kingdom of Mistral, not the world. Important distinction when you have an international group of competitors on tap.
The two names had flashed up on the big television screens alongside the official images for both Ferric Nayamasa and Araysh Welker. Ferric’s blonde hair stood out quite a bit, and people got visibly animated when his face and name popped up on the screen. His opponent, by contrast, was a teenager with dark hair that seemed to almost be staring into the camera blankly with none of the same intensity as his counterpart. Both participants were almost ready to step out into the ring and make their grand entrance into the second round of the 15th Mistral Regional Tournament. Aura meters were also on full display next to the images of both of their faces, with each one starting at 100 and going down in real time as each individual started to suffer damage. They were also both provided with an aura meter on their person as well, and it was their choice whether to use it and where to put it on their person if they did intend to use it for the fight! They were allowed to bring their weapons and one use of Dust in order to keep things strategic and to prevent anyone from winning just by spamming the stuff.
Those at home would hear the following commentary while the two contestants were getting ready to come out:
”Here we have a very interesting matchup! Ferric Nayamasa is a man with a very famous name, coming from a clan famous for their exceptional skill in battle and their legacy of being Huntsmen. He hails from the Signal Academy in the Vale and has made the long trek over to Argus to participate in this tournament! His skill in ranged combat made quite a mark in preliminaries, so expect him to use that bow of his to great effect in this match!”
”His opponent for this match is Araysh Welker, a top ranked student at Forge Academy! He specializes in short range combat with his sword, and has to be considered the underdog in this match given the caliber of opponent he’s facing in Ferric Nayamasa. Araysh’s sword isn’t able to transform, and at this level of competition someone like Ferric with the huge range advantage will abuse that to the best of his considerable ability. We’re up to the part where the contestants make their entrances, and first up is the Signal Academy graduate and Nayamasa scion himself!”
Typically the contestant with the most buzz entered the ring first, and if there was an odds-on betting favorite it tended to be that one. In this match, of course, the favorite was completely obvious. Ferric Nayamasa would be the first to enter, followed by Araysh roughly thirty seconds afterwards so there could be good clips of crowd reactions to play for the person who advanced if they ended up being noteworthy – and a famous foreigner coming in was always going to be noteworthy.
