Scorpion sting, I don't wanna
bleed
tell me that I'm not
lost
Of all the places on campus that Jack had been to in his brief time at Haven thus far, there was one he was especially familiar with. And it pained him to walk there, now, in response to Doctor Haragitanai's scheduled appointment.
Being a recent addition to the Academy's roster, he hadn't actually received a proper medical assessment yet, beyond those required during his enrollment process. It wasn't anything too terribly out of the ordinary, but was definitely an appointment he was equal parts dreading and eager for.
He hadn't set foot in that office since his sister's name was posted on the sign.
But, in spite of that aching, gnawing, sensation in his chest, he knew that this was going to be an important first step in achieving his goals at the Academy, and therefore, it was something he needed to do, no matter the misgivings he had about doing so. Sometimes you had to do hard things that you didn't want to do, and that was just what life threw at you sometimes. Jack was no stranger to that.
Still, it didn't make things easier.
He smiled a warm greeting to the receptionist as he headed through the medical wing of the Academy with practiced ease. It was a bit like how nobody ever forgets where their kitchen is in the house they grew up in, no matter how much time passes since the last time they walked there. The doctor's office was in the same spot as he remembered, except the sign bearing Merla Dawson's name was now replaced with a placard labelled "Dr. Yuki Haragitanai."
He hadn't actually met Dr. Haragitanai before, at least not to his memory, but from what he had heard of her, she was absolutely brutal, blunt, and incredibly intolerant of anybody's shit.
Exactly the kind of doctor he needed, honestly. Direct, straightforward. That was easy. Manageable.
He shuffled his wings uncomfortably, and scratched at the bare shoulder poking out from his sleeveless uniform, as he checked his Scroll for the time. 8:54. Punctual, as was the norm for him. Gathering up his resolve, he gave a sharp two knocks on the door, waiting for a moment to be invited in, before pushing past the threshold and into the doctor's office.
It was remarkably similar to the way he remembered it- sure, things had been rearranged and replaced, but the room was still the same. Felt familiar. He leveled his silvery gaze at the woman before him, with a polite smile. "Good morning, Doctor Haragitanai. I'm here for my medical assessment." He stepped over to the examination table and took a seat, before looking to the Doctor again. "Just tell me what you need me to do."

Among the list of her to-do list for the day, there was one task that particularly caught her eye. It was a morning appointment with one of the transfer students to assess their general health and to make sure that they were actually fit for combat and that they weren't hiding anything from them like a terminal illness, or a bomb in their stomach or something. In anycase, the name of the student who was to meet the Doctor today made her blink a couple times before a half smirk stretched across her face. "Dawson, huh? I wonder how he would feel seeing me sit in his sister's seat." Before she could even lament the thought, a couple of quick knocks against her sliding door caught her attention. Glancing at her watch, a curt smile stretched across her face. "Punctual too. Heh." A low chuckle escaped her lips before she lifted her Scroll tablet to search for his profile. "Come in." Doctor Haragitanai said as she awaited for him to enter the room. [break] [break] Well, well, well. If it ain't the winged little shit himself. Doctor Haragitanai indicated for him to take a seat as she finished pulling up his profile. Most of his physical information had already been entered, so now was just a matter of checking the internals. "Polite, aren't you? Please remove your shirt and extend your wings to its fullest wingspan." Doctor Haragitanai said as she began assessing her array of physician related tools. The first of which was simply a stethoscope to make sure that there was no abnormal heart rhythms. Secondly was a tool that had two points on each end to measure his wing thickness. Nothing terribly fancy, though did look slightly intimidating at a glance. "Looking pretty normal so far, nothing out of the ordinary." Faunus anatomy wasn't her strong suit, but she was a physician first and foremost, so she had a rather small pool of understanding. At the very least, it was enough for her to get by and if something did end up outside of her realm of knowledge, well, she had no qualms about making referrals. Doctors had a vast wealth of knowledge, but it was dumb to think that doctors knew everything. Being able to accept that fact and make the right call when it came to referring a patient when needed is also the requirements of a doctor. [break] . . . [break] Beyond the simple check-up, it seemed like everything else was in order. "Looks like you're in relatively good health. I didn't find anything abnormal about your body. You're perfectly set to start your training and participation in class. That aside..." Doctor Haragitanai looked up from her Scroll tablet as she finished entering the last of the necessary information and recording the fact that he's good to go. "... I bet you've got a lot of questions for me, don't you Mister Dawson?" Doctor Haragitanai took off her glasses and gazed at him with a nod. "The medical field is a small world, and your sister was a well-respected doctor among many of us. I was particularly shaken when I heard about the news, and I'd never expect to see you here. Heh. In any case, I'll answer anything you have in particular."

With a thin, small, smile, he nodded at the request, and slid down the zipper on the back of his shirt, before sliding it off his torso, very careful not to get his wings caught in it on the way past them. He was still impressed that the school had been so accommodating to his uniform needs- in his sister's day, right before the Faunus War, she had to cut holes for her wings herself. They probably didn't consider the prospect of a winged faunus ever becoming a Huntress to begin with, so it was almost understandable that they wouldn't have thought to tailor a proper uniform for her, as they did for him. Amazing that only a couple of years made so much difference in the world.
Two large black wings stretched out to their full length, revealing exactly how large they were- spread wide, each wing was a little over six and a half feet long, thick with dark feathers. He waited patiently, doing as instructed, as she went through the basic check-up process with him. It wasn't anything especially new for the boy- he'd been taught how to do essentially the same thing, himself, so he knew that his vitals were all good, no major issues with anything.
So, he nodded again with a slightly bigger smile, as she confirmed his good health, and more importantly, that he was ready for proper training. Good. That was what he was hoping to hear. However...
She, of course continued, and his smile dimmed again. He knew where this was going. It didn't surprise him that Doctor Haragitanai knew his sister, nor did it come as any great shock that she would choose to bring up that topic. He nodded slowly, eyes cast downward at his shoes for a moment. Thinking.
It was good to hear from one of her colleagues that she was respected. And importantly, that she was remembered. The Fall hadn't been so long ago, but with so many lost, so many great heroes and defenders, that after a while, names blurred together and aside from close family and friends, few could recall specific faces of too many of the dead. It seemed his sister made an impression. That was good.
After a moment, he spoke, softly, as he slowly brought his grey eyes up to meet the Doctor's. "She's the reason I'm here. Part of it, I mean." He took a breath, and swallowed before continuing. It was hard to talk about. "She's- she was a great medic. Just like our mom. She taught both of us a bunch of basic first aid stuff growing up, and we both took to it pretty well, though Merla- she was worlds better than me." A sad smile found its way to his face. It wasn't an exaggeration- he was decent at medical basics, and had a semblance that allowed him to heal aura. But she was a first-rate healer, on and off the battlefield. Had she not been a Huntress, she could have moved to some place like Atlas, become a world-renowned surgeon. Anything she'd wanted to do.
He still wasn't sure if this was what he wanted to do; only that it was what he felt he needed to do.
He took another breath and considered what his first question should be- he had so many, and it was hard pinning down what to start with. This was going to be where it all started, after all. "I suppose my first question would have to be... How can I get started on the path to being a combat medic as a Huntsman?" In theory, he already had some idea- his sister had done so, after all, but he wanted to hear Doctor Haragitanai's opinion.
And of course, while he was probably the best fit for medical training at Haven, at least in his class, he was by no means the kind of genius his sister had been. So he figured his route would be much different from hers, but it all leads to the same place, in the end- helping people, saving lives... Even if it meant risking his own, in the process. Even if it meant making hard calls, and not always knowing how. It was what he had to do. His mission, his responsibility.
If Merla was no longer able to carry her burden, he'd bear it for her. That way, they would both see it through to the end.
Idealistic? Maybe. But he would still do it, all the same.

There really never is a good time to bring up memories of the dead, to say the least. Still, it was better to get it over with now than to push it off later or create misunderstandings that could have easily been avoided from the beginning. Doctor Haragitanai met Jack's grey eyes with her own as she listened to every thing he said, nodding slowly in acknowledgement as he reminisced his sister and her accomplishments. There was no exaggeration about it. Had they been in the same facilities, it would be obvious that Merla would have outshone him. Heh, she could almost remember the brief conversations they had. She had a kind smile, a bubbly attitude, and a dilligent work ethic that must most medical personnel to shame. She radiated like a gleam of light that lifted others spirits and gave hope to many more. [break] [break] A bemused smile grew across Doctor Haragitanai's face as he came to her with his first question. "Following the footsteps of your sister and carrying on the tradition, eh? It's commendable, though it's a bit different now that you're here. Much different." Doctor Haragitanai nodded slowly as she folded her arms and leaned back against her painfully annoying stool. "Firstly, there's a lot of mental preparation that goes into this. On top of piling on your general studies, you'll need to start studying extensively on general science course prerequisites. Annoying shit, but fundamentals that you'll need to get out of the way before you get into the more specialized stuff. On top of that, you'll need to also train your Semblance as well as hone your skills without relying on your Semblance." Doctor Haragitanai nodded. It was a lot of work, but many people look up to medics and hold them in high esteem, especially during times of conflict. [break] [break] "A combat medic though... Heh, aside from learning how to treat others, you'll also need to defend yourself. Medics are often the easiest targets, and you'll need to learn to read a situation." Doctor Haragitanai had a thoughtful look on her face. When was the last time she also met a student who aspired to become a combat medic like her? Heh, it was sort of admirable, if not a little cute, but she kept that to herself as she looked at Jack. If he was so eager, she'd need to give him a little tough love too. "Though it's not as easy as learning to wrap a bandage. Sometimes you'll be faced with situations. Situations that will force you to make decisions that'll change your life. Whether it's for the better or for worse, that is entirely up to you. However, once you take on those responsibilities as a medic, you'll have to live with your choices. Having said that, are you still willing to follow that path?" [break] [break] Talk is cheap, that much Doctor Haragitanai knew. Actions spoke louder than words, and in this situation, whether or not Jack was willing to still pursue this path that he carved for himself is solely determined not only by the decision that he makes here, but by the amount of work he's willing to put in later down the line.

Jack quietly nodded as the Doctor saw right through his question, into the real crux of his dreams. Everything he did was for his sister's memory. The path she had carved out was the path he was determined to forge his own way through, because it was a path leading to something bigger than him, something good.
He listened attentively as she described all the steps that would go into his training, and he smiled very faintly to himself as she went down the list. All things he had anticipated having to focus on. It wasn't an easy profession, in any way, by any means. Fortunately for him, he was pretty good at science classes, considering his background. If anything, that would be the easiest part- unlike many students, he didn't attend a combat school, instead electing to attend a school for would-be physicians and the like. It gave him a solid background in the rigorous medical skills he would need, a nice layer of foundation to build on here.
As for his semblance, he knew that was arguably his best and worst attribute. It was uniquely suited to his specialization, but he couldn't yet control it entirely, and it came with heavy drawbacks, which made it more of a hazard in the field than a tool. However, if he could master it, he would be an especially talented combat medic- fast and durable enough to get through any amount of fighting, with the fairly rare ability to replenish his allies' Auras. Which just left his other combat-related skills...
Those needed the most help. He was okay with his sword and shield, and he was quick enough to dodge out of the way of attacks- he thanked his passion for dance for that. But beyond those, he had little going for him- he wasn't especially fast, or strong, and had absolutely no ranged capabilities. Worst of all, he was frail- his Aura was about as durable as any other student of his level, but the second that was down, his bones cracked and snapped like twigs.
He'd just have to get better.
He paused for a moment, reflecting on her final words, and that last, burning, question. Then he slowly nodded, gazing calmly into her eyes. "I am. I know it won't be easy. And I know it will be painful. But I'm ready to walk that path."
He had to be.

A smile etched onto Doctor Haragitanai's face. Not the gentle, motherly kind, but more of a determined, raring-to-go type of expression. "You really do have your sister's look in your eye." Doctor Haragitanai said as she stood up and walked over to the files and began to sort through the various names. "But I should warn you now..." Her tone changed a bit as she examined the contents and closed the cabinet, not finding what she was looking for. Her back was turned to Jack, but her voice was as clear and pronounced as she gazed at the walls. [break] [break] "You might be here of your own volition, or you feel as though you have a calling to follow in your sister's footsteps. But never feel like this a burden you have to carry, or that you have to 'pick up where she left off.'" Doctor Haragitanai turned to face Jack, her lab coat fluttering softly as a stern look in her eyes met the lad while she folded her arms. "Your sister is dead, and there is no changing that. You are not obligated under any circumstances to be here. You're young, bright-eyed, and have a lot of potential as a normal physician, saving lives in the clinic." [break] [break] Doctor Haragitanai continued to gaze at Jack with her intense stare, almost boring holes into him as she lowered her head slightly. "Out here, death is a reality that all Huntsmen, Huntresses, and students aspiring to become them face. There might be times where you may have to choose between saving one life or another. If anything, I would argue becoming a medic is the most difficult thing to do as a Huntsman or Huntress. So don't come with a flimsy resolve, got it?" [break] [break] Doctor Haragitanai let her aura seep a bit as she began to glow a soft, golden color that illuminated the room slightly. Like most of the faculty, they could all see the students profiles upon admission. Most are simply reports of their upbringing, with notable details added if they are available. Doctor Haragitanai knew that Jack didn't come from a combat school, meaning that he's already at a significant disadvantage in terms of combat prowess. If they threw him right into a Grimm infested battle or a camp full of bandits to support his team, the lad would probably crumble under mental stress. [break]

He didn't say anything as she commented on the way his eyes glowed with determination reminded her of his sister. But just because he remained silent, didn't mean that it didn't affect him. In fact, it was a compliment as appreciated as it was painful to hear. Because his sister's eyes didn't look like that anymore.
Likewise, the Doctor's speech didn't evoke an immediate response from Jack as he listened quietly. A burden... Never. Maybe "need" was the wrong word for it. It wasn't as if he was obligated to do this by some external force. The desire to follow in Merla's footsteps was something that had been brewing within him for a long time. It was an idea he'd toyed with when she'd been alive, but it had then been something that seemed out of reach. He could never kid himself into believing he had a tenth of her potential- as a Huntress, she had been an incredible medic, a reliable warrior, and a true figure of heroism and courage. She fought for what she believed in, and she did it for the world's sake, not her own. A paragon of virtue. Truly selfless. It was something to aspire to, knowing fully that he could never achieve that.
Doctor Haragitanai's blunt assessment of his sister's current status as she turned back to face him was a little jarring, finally drawing from him a wince that he couldn't quite hide. It was true, though- she was dead. Gone. And nothing could fix that. He thought about everything else she'd said too- a regular physician, in a clinic.
It was not a less noble calling than a medic in the field. Each saved lives.
But he knew, deep down, that he could never be satisfied with working in a clinic. Not every up-and-coming physician had the opportunity to become a Huntsman combat medic. They were a very rare breed, honestly. A lot of Huntsmen had field medic experience, but few actually specialized in it- of all the specialties a Huntsman could choose, it was arguably the most dangerous, most stressful, and most traumatizing. But it was also one of the most important- Huntsmen were the first line of defense against bandits, grimm, and anything else that would seek to harm the people of Mistral, of Remnant. His job would be to keep Huntsmen alive and fit for combat, which would mean less injured and dying civilians for the physicians in the clinics to concern themselves with.
At least, that was how he rationalized the decision to himself.
The way the Doc's eyes drilled holes into his head was unnerving, but if there ever was a test he felt he needed to pass, it was this, right here. He worked up as much nerve as he could muster, and met her intimidating gaze as she spoke, confirming his own beliefs about his intended field. The most difficult thing to do as a Huntsman...
That still wouldn't be enough to deter him.
"Got it."
With a nod, he felt like he'd signed off on some unseen pact or agreement, as he responded to her question-shaped command. He watched curiously as a bright golden glow surrounded the woman- her aura, no doubt. What she was preparing to do with it, though, he couldn't say at all...

Doctor Haragitanai could tell that the lad was thinking long and hard about what she had said. His subtle expression, the way his eyes moved, his shifts in posture, and the various habits that one does with their hands and shoulders indicate what's on their mind. Body language is a powerful tool that can give insight toward one's own thoughts or another. In that moment, Doctor Haragitanai turned to open another pair of drawers and found what she was looking for. "There it is..." She muttered to herself as she turned back to face Jack. [break] [break] The look of resolve on his face was subpar at best, maybe a bit more on the mediocre side. He had an air of nervousness, though despite that he still confirmed his decision. Sometime ago, someone once said that the border between bravery and cowardice is taking action despite the overwhelming fear that plagues them. Perhaps it's a big of an exaggeration right now, but given how easy it is to lose one's life in a world like this, perhaps they're not far off. With all things considered, at least he doesn't seem the type to half-ass things, and when it comes down to it, she hoped that he wouldn't have to make a decision that he would regret. As soon as he uttered his words of acknowledgement, Doctor Haragitanai beamed with a nod as she approached the winged Faunus. "Well said, Mister Dawson. Though despite your resolution, the fact of the matter is that you have little to no practical combat experience. Not to worry, there's a number of other students here who have yet to have their first experience against Grimm, though that isn't to say that I'm gonna let people run off without a taste of it means to fight. Therefore, I've decided that I'll be personally training you on combat fundamentals so you can get up to speed. Got it?" Doctor Haragitanai said as retrieved from her pockets a pair of black studded gloves. [break] [break] "With that said, our first lesson will start now." Doctor Haragitanai said with a gleaming smile as she put a hand on Jack's shoulder. "I'm gonna punch you now, alright?" She said as her grip on his shoulder became more firm, as the air around them became to increase in pressure.

He could only nod as she spoke, adequately describing his current state. He was, after all, an untrained fighter, exactly as she'd said- he knew exactly enough to get through the admissions tests, and even that was barely passable. But as she'd said, "combat" was half of the job description, and if he had any hopes of being like Merla, of doing her memory the justice it deserved, he would have to train harder, much harder. She had been a superb Huntress, one looked up to by the younger generations, including himself, and anything less than that level of skill from himself would not be acceptable- he would have to do better.
And he would have that opportunity to learn. Very soon, in fact. Doctor Haragitanai pulled a pair of gloves from her pocket, and his eyes widened just a bit as he realized what was very likely about to happen. Something about the look on her face... It was a little sadistic, like she was enjoying the prospect of this training, a little too much...
Jack blinked as she rather directly informed him that she was about to hit him. Well, there wasn't much else he could do, then, was it? He swallowed and nodded, bracing himself for the punch.
The grip on his shoulder tightened, and as the fist came crashing in, he snapped his eyes shut and flinched away a bit before he could stop himself. But damn if that was going to help him any, at all...
He'd been in scraps before, and he'd been punched plenty of times before, but he'd never been punched like this. It was like his soul was knocked clear out of his chest, right through his back, smacked into the wall, and ricocheted back into his body before he had time to react. There was not even a question about it- he was thrown over the back of the examination table, landing solidly against the floor, with a grunt of pain and his hands clutching at the point of impact.
It took him a good, solid, moment before he was able to gather the necessary strength to haul himself off the floor, back onto his feet, but it wasn't as if that was a useful thing to do- he had no doubt in his mind that at least three, if not more, of his ribs were broken by the punch, and another by the floor's contribution. Standing was painful, but not unbearable- it wasn't his first rodeo, but that still didn't make it hurt any less. He hissed as his abdomen gave out, halfway through standing, and he lurched forward onto the examination table again, wincing up at Doc with the pain and shock visible on his face, staring at her expectantly. What he expected next, he wasn't sure- this was a lot to process.
He'd just had the life punched out, and into, him, and he wasn't sure how to feel about that. He wasn't sure if she would tend to his newfound injuries, or add to them. Hell, he'd never expected a faculty member to hit him before, but here he was.
All of his expectations had been surpassed, and he had no idea what was going to happen next, but his sister's face passed through his mind, and he knew that whatever path he'd meant to get started on, he was on it now, for better or for worse.
Hopefully Doc wouldn't go easy on him.

[attr="class","dangertxt"] [break] [break] Oh? He took the punch like a champ and went down without so much as a complaint. "Not bad. At least you don't bitch about it." Walking over to the winged lad, Doctor Haragitanai helped hoisting him up with one arm relatively easily and set him on his feet, making sure that he didn't immediately topple over. Of course, the punch wasn't just to throw her weight around. She had activated her semblance prior to impact, and in doing so, allowed her to fix up any major problems that plagued the lad. Most of the time, it could have easily been done with just a touch to fix him up... But she also wanted to punch him because his demeanor was rather cute. Regardless, Doctor Haragitanai took a step back and rummaged for a plaque that read 'Doctor is out, come back later' on the front. "Well, I said your training starts now, and there's some expensive equipment here, so we'll be continuing this in the training area. Pick up your possessions and we will proceed from there. I'll provide a Doctor's note so don't worry about missed classes." Doctor Haragitanai said as she headed for the door with the sound of her heels clicking against the floor with each step. [break] [break] "Oh, and don't think you can get away with those wings of yours." Doctor Haragitanai said with a mischievous grin. "Before you can fly, you're gonna relearn how to crawl first, so you better be prepared for everything I give you, right?"
