[attr="class","nikki109"]”Today we’re going to do an ethics scenario. The purpose of this is to get you all thinking, because quite frankly a situation with the same stakes won’t just be limited to thought exercises for long if you decide to pursue this line of work. It’s also to show that the position of team leader is immensely difficult, and only made harder when everyone on the team thinks that they know better. When in that position as leader or working solo, you will have to make decisions. Sometimes those decisions will be matters of life and death, and if you actually make it to get your license you will absolutely have to decide which life is worth saving.” [break][break]
She was dressed in the usual black and white three-piece suit, still in that phase of really enjoying the feel of nicer clothes and not wanting to go back to the normal and more practical wear for the moment. The black jacket was draped over the leather chair she was sitting in, so the white dress shirt’s sleeves were exposed underneath the black vest. Getting up from said chair and moving over to the large chalkboard with slow, deliberate steps, she continued on in the same bored and detached tone that she almost always used. [break][break]
This class was part of a unique class series where both professors and people from outside of the school came out once a month to take a mandatory class that was markedly different than any other class they were taking that semester in both content and in seminars like this in the fact that the professor only moderated discussion rather than lectured for the most part. These classes were class agnostic and usually had two or three different ones running concurrently at the same time, and this was the first in that series. In this particular day, the three options were a Mistral Police Recruitment Event hosted by a police lieutenant, Social Psychology by Van Sange, and Lifeboat Ethics by Shadecloak. Given that lineup, it wasn’t exactly surprising that a good chunk of students were at this lecture rather than the other two. [break][break]
”Assume for this scenario that you are the only person currently on a lifeboat after an airbus style ship had crashed. Grimm are irrelevant in this scenario, because most sea dwelling Grimm are enormous and would kill everyone before they had the chance to be saved and lancers would destroy your lifeboat instantly. The only other outcome adding Grimm to the scenario would entail is that you all drown to death after winning so it is pointless to include. Your boat has a weight capacity for eight regular sized adults and the food and water supplies that came with the boat and adding any more will sink the lifeboat. Your boat sunk in the middle of nowhere, and you will likely be stranded for days. The lifeboat has a radio as well, but it got smacked around in the crash and is currently not working. You have no scroll signal, so aren’t close enough to any land to have one.” [break][break]
Taking one of the pieces of chalk and starting to write on the board, the faunus continued. The subject matter was heavy, but that was the entire point. At some point, maybe even within the next few weeks and almost certainly within the next couple of months, the trainees would have to make their first snap judgment on who was worth saving and who wasn’t worth the risk. It would be criminal to send the people who were going to be in charge of making that decision out there without first hammering it in that it would happen and being given some tools or at least some awareness of how to approach that problem when it came. [break][break]
”You got to know most of the people on the boat, of which there are twenty. If you fit more than eight people on the boat total, including yourself, the boat will almost certainly sink, and you will be left to tread water in the ocean, very likely until you either die or thirst or get too exhausted to do anything but drown. The boat also has enough water and food to comfortably last three days for eight people. These supplies can be thrown overboard to lower the weight on the boat enough to allow one more person on board. I’m going to write down the twenty passengers on the board. Your purpose is to discuss who to take on and why. You will have to leave some of them to die, and your logic for who and why is also important. Assume your knowledge of each passenger is limited to what is written down on the board.”[break][break]
1. Morbidly obese man who weighs the same as three other people. Closest to lifeboat, will struggle to get on even if refused until he is incapacitated. This will rock the boat and possibly capsize it. He has a backpack filled with enough food and water to last one person three days.[break][break]
2-5. Mother, Father, two kids aged 5 and 7. Kids weigh half as much as a standard adult. If separated, will wail and thrash and push incessantly and try to force the other members of their family aboard. This will rock the boat and possibly capsize it.[break][break]
6. Extremely elderly man, a doctor. He has a fully stocked, if soaked first aid kit in his backpack. Breathing issues, lost inhaler.[break][break]
7. A cripple paralyzed from the waist down, only afloat due to a floatation vest. Lost wheelchair in crash.[break][break]
8. Elderly woman who is a retired therapist. Heart issues, unable to take medications because they were in the check-in luggage that is now underwater.[break][break]
9. Middle aged businesswoman who is the daughter of the elderly woman.[break][break]
10. An unaccompanied male, approximately 13 years old. Likely a runaway. Twitchy and has a lot of knives. Screams for help and how he can barely swim. Head bobs under water for seconds at a time as he’s having trouble even treading water.[break][break]
11. Young adult female engineer who worked on the ship.[break][break]
12. Young adult male deck hand.[break][break]
13. Elderly male captain and navigator of the ship. Screaming at you to save the women and children.[break][break]
14. Middle aged male first mate of the ship and cook. [break][break]
15. A close blood relative of yourself. Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, close Cousin, Uncle, whatever.[break][break]
16-17. Young mother with baby, struggling to keep afloat with the extra weight. Young mother is overweight, so together they weigh about as much as two regular passengers. If you get close, she will grasp the boat regardless of whether you intend to let her on or not which will rock the boat and possibly capsize it.[break][break]
18. Young adult female doctor.[break][break]
19. Great War veteran with prosthetic arms and legs. Screaming at you to save the kids.[break][break]
20. Wealthy heir to a powerful company like Schnee Dust screaming to save him and you'll be rich.[break][break]
”The first order of business is to decide how to deal with stranded passenger number one who is trying to pull himself onto your life boat. He tells you all about the backpack filled with food and water that he has as a way to try and talk you into letting him on, and for the sake of the argument we’ll say he’s telling the truth. You can fit seven people on the boat other than yourself, and if you let the morbidly obese man who weighs the same as three others that number will drop to four others.”[break][break]
”You can approach this problem by eliminating people from contention or simply picking your seven. Since this is a thought exercise, you are under no time constraint. This is an open discussion and I will not step in to clarify anything once I am finished speaking and will simply take the seven slots that you come up with as a class and write them down. If you choose to eliminate possibilities first, I will cross out the passengers you have condemned to die. Debate start.”[break][break]
