[attr="class","nikki109"]Today’s sparring would be a little different, largely because the training wheels were starting to come off. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays started as one mile runs when the class split but progressively went up to three miles into the present day with five miles being the goal by the end of the year. She had the trainees for two hours in the beginning of the day from eight until ten, and the running currently took up about thirty to thirty-five minutes of that time before they were corralled back into the classroom. Shade routinely lapped people, and the rule was that if you couldn’t make the time or tried to cheat you got on one of the three elliptical trainers in the classroom itself for twenty minutes of constant movement when coming back inside that was set on an uphill setting. She wasn’t kidding when she said some of them were going to puke running, but the fact of the matter was that a good chunk of them were kind of horrifically out of shape at that point. [break][break]
Tuesdays and Thursdays were sparring days, and sometimes on Thursdays or Fridays the two would mix. This Thursday was one of those days, where trainees spent the first hour on a five-mile run to fucking exhaust them before being led to the training facilities where they would be expected to fight without being given a break. It was to get them used to fighting in less than ideal conditions, and to that end the distance away from each other before every match began would be different for each group in addition to the fact that it was a specialty day for sparring… which meant that trainees were forced into not using one method of combat. [break][break]
Basically, what specialty days did was force trainees to use a different fighting style than they would normally use. One of the three categories of semblance, melee, and ranged were completely made unavailable to them under pain of disqualification and extra laps for the rest of the sparring session instead of the break that would normally occur after their match. Each trainee had a different restriction based off of what Shade believed to be their biggest asset, and while there was always bitching about it the practice allowed trainees to get out of their comfort zone in a safe environment. [break][break]
Colton was holding up well after five miles, breathing noticeably heavier but not exaggeratedly so. He maintained a steady if completely uninspiring pace throughout the run like all others, but the five-mile seemed to be just around his current limit at this point without breaking down into wheezing – he was sweating way more than usual and looked pretty pained. Like most manipulators, he was barred from using his semblance. His complete lack of mobility without his semblance in addition to almost all effective ranged attacks being barred from him made his matches much more interesting to watch in specialty days. He wasn’t quite exhausted yet but would be before the end of his first match. [break][break]
Niraya basically looked like she was dying from lack of breath. She was definitely a sprinter and not a distance runner, and usually struggled in keeping pace the entire time. Being a transformation semblance, she was barred from using it in order to get used to fighting without it during the inevitable downtime she would encounter on the field. She was already exhausted and would start the fight so, but at least she had managed to hold her breakfast in this morning. That was a credit to her self-control, really, because the run was insanely difficult for her. [break][break]
Argent was the same as Niraya, fast with zero stamina. His face was scrunched up and there seemed to be almost a bit of steam being emitted from the scales on his face, which was red from struggling to breathe for much of the latter half of the run. That might have been the first time he was forced to run for that long consecutively, and he was already exhausted to come into his first match. Like most manipulators, Argent would be unable to use his semblance and would be forced to use his weapons the old-fashioned way. He looked like he was ready to puke out his lunch once the run ended, but squatted down and managed to hold it in. [break][break]
Erytheia just looked like a tomato. Bright red and wheezing, she was bent over trying to catch her breath trying to make use of what little time she had before she was forced to exercise even more. She was another trainee with speed but no stamina, and like most manipulators wasn’t allowed to use her semblance in specialty days. Unlike most others, though, Shade sometimes swapped that stipulation with melee because the blonde was less practiced than most other manipulators with her semblance. She puked whatever she ate and drank this morning immediately after the run concluded over the grass, likely as a result of drinking too much water before and during the run. She was exhausted and likely a bit disoriented coming into her first spar and would struggle just to walk to her spot by the looks of it. [break][break]
Holly also looked like a tomato, with her if anything seeming redder in the face and even more desperate for oxygen. She was perhaps the most responsive when it came to getting yelled at when she was slowing down, for better or for worse. She was on the slower side and also clearly not used to distance running, so her ability to keep up started very low and to her credit rose up every week thus far. For most of the run she looked like a goddamn zombie plodding along with her head lolling in sheer exhaustion, pain, and grim determination to finish and not be forced to run laps at the training facility. She, like most manipulators, was unable to use her semblance for specialty days. She would start off exhausted and would only deteriorate from there. [break][break]
Someone once asked if Jack could fly instead of run, she didn't even remember who it was to be honest but it was on one of the first days of the class. The person got the Stupid Fucking Question (SFQ) rock for the rest of the day, with the stipulation being that they had to ask the rock any questions they had for the rest of the day before bothering anyone else with their stupidity. She had not let him fly once since the classes split, for better or for worse. On the ground, he looked like he was always in pain and was similar to Holly in terms of starting at a really low baseline. His hobbies growing up were probably pretty sedentary, so he never worked up any cardio strength growing up. Jack, like most transformation semblance users was barred from using his semblance in order to learn how to survive during the downtime. Unfortunately for him, though, he was already exhausted and would only find it harder to breathe as time went on. He was currently sitting down trying to rest his feet, which chronically seemed to hurt him like hell every time he was forced to run on largely concrete surfaces. Today was and would continue to be a rough day for him, but this was a Huntsman Academy after all. [break][break]
Ryan did the running a lot better than most of his classmates, but frankly that wasn’t saying a lot. He did great for the first half of the run, but in the second half deteriorated pretty steadily and likely used his semblance a bit to finish. Hands over his head and breathing heavily, he was at least able to stand and was very close to exhausted but not quite there. He was unable to use melee during specialty days, forcing him to rely on his new ranged capability entirely and disengage when his enemies got close. [break][break]
Rosalia, frankly, was the class standout in terms of both stamina and speed with her ability to flip that physical boost semblance on at will to leave most of the class in the dust. She was fine, frankly, and was in the best condition stamina wise out of everyone in the group except for Shadecloak herself. Rose was barred from using her semblance in fights, which forced her to actually dodge and think about her actions rather than just rushing her classmates down like a rampaging bull. She was currently taunting Colton about his wheezing, and aside from the normal redness of physical activity in her face looked perfectly fine. She could probably go her entire first round in addition to the run without being exhausted, frankly. [break][break]
Lily was another standout, with a speed and stamina that outstripped most in the class but fell short of the demands of her this particular day. Like Ryan, she was able to stand and was sucking in air in a state very close to exhausted. She was barred from using her semblance in specialty days, which would hurt particularly bad today because it would be next to impossible to finish a match before exhaustion really set in. She was improving at a rate noticeably faster than her peers, though, so that was a good sign. [break][break]
Ameli was in the same boat as Lily, most likely due to wearing armor much of the time. She was also noticeably faster than most of her classmates but was just slightly below the level required to not be fucked up by the five-mile initial run. She was standing but breathing heavily, and would come into her first round very close to exhausted. Like most transformation semblances, she wasn’t allowed to use her semblance. [break][break]
Seiya always looked like she was sucking on a lemon, insofar as her face was always scrunched up like she was in mild but constant pain. Well, currently she was in severe but constant pain and her face was twisted up like she just drank lemon juice or something. She was exhausted, frankly, and was sitting on the ground trying desperately to catch her breath. Unluckily for her, there would be no respite for her just yet. She was barred from using her semblance, which also effectively made sure she had no ranged combat ability for specialty days. [break][break]
Brigit was the other puker this go around, with the heat and sweat probably not agreeing with the prosthetics. She was another fast trainee with no stamina, though the latter part was at least understandable due to the weight of the reinforced prosthetics she was lugging around. It was as much weight as wearing a set of armor like Ameli, most likely, so it was a drawback that was expected and would have to be worked through. Hunched over on the ground after expelling all the water and miscellaneous food consumed this morning, she looked like death and would start exhausted and likely mildly disoriented. She, like most transformation semblances, was barred from using her semblance in the sparring. [break][break]
This time of the year in the Cloud District is was cold, and this morning was around negative five degrees Celcius with a light dusting of snow across the outdoor training facility. This one had multiple grass and dirt arenas marked with metal stakes thrust into the ground to mark the outer edges and barely visible at the moment white paint outlining roughly a forty square meter area of land. Most of the trainees would be able to see their breath at this temperature, which was just fine because it enhanced the misery of the morning. Holly and Jack were the last ones to trot in today, and basically as soon as they did the faunus started barking out orders. [break][break]
”Arena one is a one on one – Colton and Rose get over there starting about five meters from each other. Arena two is a two on two – give me Seiya and Brigit on one side and Ryan and Holly on the other starting about ten meters away from each other. Arena three is a one on one, with Lily and Jack starting at touching gloves range. Arena four is two on two, give me Ameli and Erytheia on one side and Argent and Niraya on the other at about five meters apart. You got thirty seconds to get to positions or you’re running more laps, so hop to it.” [break][break]
At about the twenty second mark everyone had gone over to their positions, and Shadecloak immediately barked: ”Winning team gets to rest, and the losing team has to run two more laps around the training facility before they get a break. Starting in five, four, three, two, one, GO.” [break][break]
Shade at this point was barely even sweating and breathing completely normally, and fully able to yell at full volume when needed so nobody could claim they didn't hear. She had started at more normal volumes, but apparently half the class had hearing issues so she gradually kept raising her voice until her default voice outside was much more 'sports coach' and much less 'philosophy professor' in both tone and volume. It wasn't her favorite, frankly, but it worked and that was the thing that was important.
