”Queen Lancer at Starboard. Focus fire and be ready for the pop.” [break][break]
The Grimm were far more agitated on this trip than ever before, and it wasn’t exactly hard to see why. [break][break]
The entire village was a smoldering wreck, even in the distance. When the airship had last been there, every single wall was still standing and there was little to no physical damage to them. In the distance, though, every village wall visible was torn to absolute shreds. There was nothing down there but rubble, blood, and bodies. Coming from the west side, it was clear that most of the buildings were destroyed in one way or another and the roads were darkened with the blood and guts of untold amounts of villagers. [break][break]
A green cloak with its hood down covered most of Shade’s form, including partially the leather pauldrons on both of her shoulders. Brown trousers and boots alongside a dark leather jerkin over a green undershirt completed the ensemble alongside dark green metal gauntlets that ended in claw-like tips. Her weapon was a jet-black western style longbow as tall as she was, currently strung and slung across her back. She had two visible closed quivers on both sides of her hips with the tip of the arrow at the top of each quiver. The ship carried over a thousand arrows strewn around in various compartments over the ship, and she always carried two quivers on her person with a larger emergency one on her back when they encountered a lot of resistance. [break][break]
The arrows would look slightly different than the ones the trainees used, but not enough that a non-archer would notice. Carbon arrows provided more weight and durability at the expense of shrapnel when broken, which was a benefit rather than a negative in this case. Four-fletched arrows instead of three increased accuracy, particularly on quicker, twitch fire shots. The thumb release trigger was abandoned at this point, because next to the city was where the Grimm were the thickest. The wait until they were in communications range was fucking unbearable, especially because the deterioration of whatever power grid the city had before made that effective range of communication even smaller than it was before. [break][break]
”Huntress Theloria Shadecloak requesting that any survivors identify their location.” would be the message sent to the only working frequency left in the area. The thought had definitely crossed her mind that they had come too late, as she couldn’t actually make out an area of town that wasn’t destroyed yet from the angle they were approaching from. Running through how in the world this could have happened from the steady state the airship had left the village in was the first and least productive response to a crisis, so really the only thing to do now was continue the fly over and hope that there was some sort of response. She muted her earpiece for a moment before barking into the radio strapped to her shoulder – a communications system that would reach those on the airship but not anyone down on the ground. [break][break]
”Spread out across the deck and call out when you see something big. We’re going to do a flyover of the city – make sure to look through those moonlight scopes to see if you can find any clusters of survivors. We’ll do one pass, two if possible. Keep a look out for whatever caused that earthquake, though, might be a Beringel or something of similar strength that managed to cause this. If you see something like that, call out immediately – if one of those gets on the ship, we lose the ship.” [break][break]
Being harassed by lancers, ravagers, and the occasional Nevermore was commonplace at this point, and the threats were shot down with focus fire from the police for smaller threats and targets shots to the fleshiest parts of the body for the larger ones. The larger problem here, much more than safety, was both finding survivors and finding a place to land the damn airship. The entire city looked trashed, and they sure as hell couldn’t even hover over an area where a bunch of jumping type Grimm like Alphas could just enter the ship just as easily as any surviving villagers or trainees. [break][break]
The ship was a little behind schedule, being able to land perhaps five to ten minutes after the hour. It was in sight of most of the trainees who had vision of the west side of the village, however, though the dark cloud of Grimm was surrounding it more than they had even seen before. Suicidal charges to chip away at the armor and outside of the airship seemed to be the method of attack, and while it wasn’t very effective… a couple hundred attempts later would have a very different story. Salvation was in sight but just out of reach for all on the ground, but enough of the villagers still remained that some would have to be left behind. [break][break]
There simply wasn’t room for everyone on the ship. The first airship crested over the horizon, but there was no second. Professor Van Sange and his airship was not here, so sacrifices would have to soon be made. With the varying level of emotional dampeners put on the villagers, there was a good chance of a small riot breaking out when people realized that they were going to be left behind. It was a natural and human desire to live that had driven them as far as they did, and to have it ripped away at the last moment due to a logistical problem was cruel to the extreme. They had survived and may have fought for hours – and even those that didn’t fight helped out in some other way whether it be food or morale or supply ferrying. It was very rare for one of those who remained to have done absolutely nothing to help defend the village, certainly not enough to form any sizeable group. [break][break]
And yet, some of these people would have to be left to fend for themselves in a Grimm infested city and no prospects of escape or survival. Such was the life of a Huntsman, for better or for worse.
