[attr="class","RDcontainer"] [attr="class","RDcontent"] Wham[break] [break] Crash[break] [break] “Inside, inside!” The sound of the pushing and the rushing, as well as the sound of the screams and cries for help, were barely able to be heard over the nearby sound of gunshots and the distant sound of even more intense battle. Still, one voice was able to be heard well enough thanks to its shrill intensity as it barked orders towards the impromptu members of Rochdale’s militia. As people tried to rush into the somewhat reinforced building to find cover from the Grimm in the streets, it was the voice that gave orders. It was the voice that have tried to keep this particular band of defenders alive for the last few hours as they made their way from building to building, trying to find people who were undrugged enough to give a damn for their life and were able to flee away from the walls further into the town. Some were able to be persuaded with a minimal amount of time that they needed to get out or they would die. Others were too unresponsive to get them to cooperate in any sensible amount of time. Choices were made, guilt will come later. [break] [break] “Riffles! This place has a second store! Take position there and give us cover!” [break] [break] Multiple sets of footsteps rushed up the stairs of the building and soon the missing bangs from the symphony of violence returned again, shooting at the stray Beowolfs and Lancers that had penetrated into the town proper at this point in the siege. Well, calling it a slaughter was more to the point. The girl who had instructed the militia members to go upstairs was still at the front door herself, looking at mistake number ‘who-even-keeps-count’. The small girl was dragging a screaming and flailing body of a middle-aged man inside, his gut pierced just moments ago by the stinger of a Lancer. Was it his gut? Everything looked red on his coat now. Holly had tried to keep the oversized killer bug from coming closer, but as she lacked the range capabilities to fight it effectively, it didn’t go as planned. She had shielded off one attack intended for the very squishy survivors fleeing in terror. She didn’t manage to finish to job and kill it before it could come for a second attack run. She had thought that the drone would attack to the right of her. It came left. She didn’t manage to readjust in time. It was a split second decision, and Holly blew it. Any now she was dragging yet another body while her mind needed to be at three different tasks at once. She had made a list before that was now burned into her memory, ready to be used at a moment’s notice: [break] [break] 1. Direct the militia to keep them away from immediate danger, but still make use of their firearms. [break] [break] 2. Direct the unarmed civilians to a place where they were out of any harm at all. [break] [break] 3. Make sure that any wounded people that maybe still had a chance were taking care off. [break] [break] The cover fire that was now starting to be given was enough to keep any more immediate Lancer attacks at bay. Their position on the upper floor of the building meant that they had a good enough vantage point to shoot. Even if they were untrained and barely keeping it together, Holly had come to depend on her little squad to at least take out some of the Grimm every once in a while, or provide her with cover as she was engaging them. Still, Holly had prioritized getting people to safety over taking out Grimm. As such, Holly now turned her attention towards the people who she just managed to get inside. All while still dragging the wounded person nearly twice her weight further into the building. [break] [break] “The windows on the ground floor are barricaded! We are going to treat wounds now, people! Someone help me with getting this man on a table so that I can look at his wound. Whoever has the medical supplies, bring them to me! The rest of you, like we have done before! Check yourself and the person next to you if you see any wounds on them from the last move. Adrenaline can make you not feel the pain, but I need to know if I need to take a look at anything serious.” Holly had placed quite a lot of emphasis on making the best use of the extra manpower she had gained from saving people. While they weren’t good in a fight, at least they had a set of eyes that could look if people were wounded or if Grimm were coming from a certain direction. Now that most of them were undrugged enough, they could look out for each other to some extent. [break] [break] After Holly had help with getting the lancer victim on a table, she turned her attention to the most gravely injured person in the room. The riffles upstairs were still happily firing every other moment or so, but otherwise this place seemed safe enough to not be immediately swarmed. The stinger puncture went deep and while it wasn’t that obvious at first thanks to the jacket the man wore, on closer inspection it became clear that he was hit in his chest, not so much the gut. Maybe the stinger went clean through? The man had gone into shock from the loss of blood and the pain. His earlier erratic movement had become slower now, and his breathing turned shallower. He wasn’t even screaming anymore. Before Holly had her medical supplies at the ready, and had already become quite apparent what kind of case this was going to be. She had seen it plenty before on this night. She had become somewhat of an expert. Holly was now holding his hand as she brought her face closer to his. Holly looked into the man’s eyes, and he into hers. They looked for about a few seconds, seeming to communicate with glances. The man struggled to try and speak, but from the sheer trouble even getting a single word out before coughing up blood, Holly simply tried to close his mouth and give some bedside manner. Giving a smile to the man, she simply spoke softly as she kept holding his hand tightly. Her voice was hardly audible over the shots being fired upstairs and the sounds of battle outside. Still, only one person needed to hear it. And he was right here. “You will be all right! Just…just go to sleep and have a pleasant dream. All will be all right; you can rest now!” [break] [break] The man didn’t wake up again. [break] [break] -[break] [break] Holly didn’t even rightfully know who had offered her a cigarette as she blew smoke out of her mouth, coughing slightly because of her inadept technique. It felt weird, it felt gross like her mouth had burned from eating some hot garbage. She had never smoked before, but when someone offered her one to take the edge off, the girl didn’t object. If she was going to die, it didn’t matter much. At least she could say that she had done it once in her life. Not five minutes had passed since the person next to her had passed away. Lost too much blood, or his lungs were punctured, or maybe it was his heart? How many were it not? How many people had she tried to treat tonight but failed? 11? 12? Too many. [break] [break] Nobody else needed immediate medical attention. The guns upstairs were quiet. No Grimm threats in the vicinity of the building. Well, technically the whole city was facing a Grimm Threat, but nothing in the surrounding streets at the moment. A small reprieve in the fighting. Most likely for a few minutes at best. Maybe the Grimm were being directed by one of the other students to another place in town? Maybe a class of school children were screaming in fear at the other side of town, causing them all to swarm that way? Holly didn’t complain. As awful as it sounded, she needed this break. She had been at it for close to an hour to get this amount of people to this building. One of the fortified building that was their best bet at survival in this town till the airship arrived. [break] [break] Holly had taken about 30 people total and had led them to the fortified storehouse in the southern part of town. There were already some people inside, so there were around 50 people total on both floors. It was already a sturdy enough stone building before the students had made sure to barricade the ground floor windows and the main door. The interior of the building was very minimalistic, the downstairs area mainly surprising of a singular large room in which good were stored, and the upper floor being used as a residence. It was mostly likely used to keep goods that were intended for trade or such, as there were still quite a lot of empty crates and containers scattered around. Most of its contents were already used during the siege of Grimm, so there wasn’t much of note save for things that couldn’t be eaten. [break] [break] Well, better alert the others. [break] [break] Holly took another puff from her cigarette before she took out her scroll to write a message. [break] [break] 02:52 Holly: “In Storehouse with survivors. I am fine. The stone building in the centre that we reinforced. It reads storehouse on the sign. We can fit more people in here. There are around 40 people here, we can fit double that. If you have survivors, bring them here.” [break] [break] Placing the device away in her pocket, Holly noticed something that she hadn’t done before. Well, maybe she just didn’t actively acknowledge it…It was hard to miss. [break] [break] [break] [break] Holly’s once white outfit was more red than white at the moment. Her sleeves had it the worse. Blood… Not hers at least. Not that she thought it was. Nah, she wasn’t wounded. It was blood…from all those people. Of those who she saved with whatever medical supplies she still had in her dwindling inventory. Of those who she failed to save because she didn’t have the time, resources, or plain knowledge to treat them. Of those who were already so far gone that the best doctor in Remnant couldn’t keep them from passing on. Of those who were already a bloody mess when she got there. Was it grossing her out? Yeah. Was it upsetting her? Yeah. Did she had the mental strength to freak out about it? Not really. Maybe a few hours ago. Maybe last week. Today, at this moment in time? [break] [break] Holly just took another puff of her cigarette. [break] [break] It was starting to grow on her. |
