Bravery is believing in yourself, and that's one thing nobody can teach you.
He really shouldn’t be the one doing this.
Shadecloak floated the idea to him, with the logic that it would go over better if he did it than her. The argument was made and taken that it would seem condescending and taken badly if Shade of all people did it with her position and… personality. The acknowledgement was made that Colton wasn’t exactly much better, but he did have perhaps the most social capital right now. He was about as much a conquering hero as one could be in the aftermath of a total failure of a mission, with his fight against the Sea Feilong. Even in a world where nobody gave a shit about you unless you did something very recently, he was about as untouchable as it got from a credibility perspective.
He was also class lead, so it was pretty impossible for him to flat refuse. He felt that he had extra responsibility on account of his unique… position both in name as the class lead and informally as one of the only combat academy trained people on campus. Also, on the more cynical view of it… it didn’t matter if anyone exploded like Carmim did when he was there. Out of everyone in Class Green, he was in the least amount of danger from even a surprise freak out and attempt on his life. Nobody was capable of doing it, and in a he said she said situation… well, he had the most social capital out of everyone coming out of Rochdale. He had zero incentive to lie about anyone in his class, even, because he also recognized that a situation like with Ferric or Qiu’li was unacceptable and absolutely could not happen again.
Out of the list of names, frankly, there were some more likely than others to have issues. Niraya was a harmless nerd who kept to herself. Argent didn’t need babysat like this and was probably fine. Erytheia, if anything, should be the one doing this, and he would probably ask her to help. She had more empathy than he did and was overall more emotionally resilient, those were just facts. Holly kept her shit together more than most under pressure, so if anything, he was least worried about her mental state. Jack was, frankly, kind of a wimp generally speaking but had stepped up so hard that even the mental classification as a former wimp seemed to be insulting. He had emotional support systems already with his family close and Doc being back. Both were decent, and he didn’t need to crowd.
Ryan hadn’t been seen in weeks and was overall another harmless nerd. Rose went off for Christmas and wouldn’t be torn up about what happened. Lily and Seiya were also been gone for weeks, so irrelevant at the moment. Brigit just killed Ferric and almost died, so she was getting checked up on. The circumstances around Ferric’s death were kind of concerning, and there were rumors he was mutilated. Colton wasn’t exactly one to judge that, considering what he did, very harshly… but still. Unnecessary.
Payne had just transferred in and may very well choose to transfer out just as fast. Same with Rin Hellebore, but the latter was actually on campus when the Attack happened. Ruqa was also back, and might actually be a decent candidate to help as well. Really at the present the only people that stood out were Brigit and Rin in terms of people who needed immediately checked up on. Erytheia could assist in checking up on others briefly – like Jack or Holly in the level below that where they were probably pretty traumatized but able to keep their shit together.
Really, for practical purposes, Rin and Payne if and when he got back were the most urgent. Haven couldn’t really afford to bleed more trainees than it already had, but from an objective standpoint neither of them had any reason to put much faith in the institution. It was an erosion of faith in the safety of the place that Colton himself shared, with the aftermath of Carmim’s outburst creating the adaptation of adding more steel into his boots. A sole plate along with reinforced toes, thicker than usual and out of sight, allowed them to be manipulated by Polarity if the need arose. It would be insufficient for any extended fights but was more than enough to take care of anyone he had identified if they decided to lose their shit for any reason since his weapons and armor were still being remade.
It was the day after the Carmim explosion and meeting, and still before classes had actually started back up again. Rin was the first one on the list as the new person who was actually present, so Colton had set up this meeting about an hour ago to get a sense of her. Colton, like most of the time when not in school uniform, wasn’t exactly shy about the fact that he wasn’t wearing rags. A high quality dark gray pea jacket along with gray dress pants and dark brown boots completed the ensemble along with a brown sweater underneath the jacket because it was fucking freezing outside.
And yet outside was the location that he picked, right on the Quad. A large, open area with walking room – which Colton frankly needed right about now after being cooped up in the forge for most of the last few days. It also, frankly, let him get a sense for how strong the aura of the newcomer was. If it was weaker or less controlled, she’d be shivering and want to go inside immediately. If it was stronger or more controlled, there would be no issue.
He wasn’t going to dig too far. He just needed to know that she wasn’t batshit insane if she was staying, and if she was leaving at least make an attempt to pitch the school. His responsibility was shallow, but at the very minimum an initial assessment needed to be made. With that done, the baton could be passed off to someone else more suited for the other parts.
