KISHKA BURZANOVA
The Vytal Tournament.
Colton had decided to bitch out of it, and left before it even started, which was a fact Kishka was a little annoyed with. She had been looking forward to ripping him a new one in the later rounds. It couldn't really be helped, though- he went off to go become a Huntsman. Spared his pride from getting his ass kicked by at least one Burzanova twin, at least.
Bel... Kishka still needed to come up with a plan of action for her.
She'd been doing her homework, that much was for damn sure.
There were three members of her team, officially registered, at the moment, and between the three of them, she was close to having a solid plan of action. She knew her sister inside-out. Strengths, weaknesses, the way her semblance functioned, its limitations. She doubted Bel would have improved too much since Sanctum, frankly, even after three years of training. She was cocky, even worse than Kishka, and unlike Kishka, she didn't have the good grace to be self-aware.
The biggest issue was her semblance.
Light manipulation was extremely powerful. Better than Colton's Polarity, for sure, and if Bel were better with it, it might even have been a match for Cressida's Gravity, in another life.
She had a massive range, area of attack functionality, huge damage, and under the harsh stadium lights, she would have more than enough light to be a force of nature, provided she ended up in an environment that featured open, uncovered, space. Kishka's best bet, biome-wise, was going to be either the urban biome, forest biome, or possibly the gravity dust biome.
And she couldn't dismiss Bel's physical traits either. Agility was never much her strong suit, nor was speed, but she was tough, with a lot of Aura reserves, and she wasn't bad with her weapon either, although she did rely far too much on her semblance.
It was like Colton had told her, in the forest, once- she would need to hit hard, make every hit count, and have the speed and agility to close into melee range, and the durability to survive getting that far.
Undoubtedly, Bel, despite lacking Kishka's tactical acumen, would have thought of at least that much. So logically, Bel's team would consist of at least one tanky blocker, one AoE DPS fighter, and one support. Healer, perhaps, though knowing Bel's ego, she doubted that- why have a healer, if you never get hit? More likely, she'd either have a second DPS, or a trapper of some sort.
Dealing with the AoE specialist was easy enough- Argent could handle that, and with all of his intensive semblance training, he might even be able to block off Bel's attacks too. Then there was Holly, Kishka's support player. The forest biome was the most ideal, followed by urban, for its vines and moss (something Holly really needed to work on!) In the forest, Bel's semblance would be hampered slightly, but Holly's would be exponentially more powerful.
Kishka had seen what she could do with a grassy space, in Haven Forest, and she was observant enough to note that the plants in the Gardenin Club room were intertwined and connected in some sort of a plant grid. In a forest environment, Holly could be devastating, entangling Bel's team in her plants, and even blocking attacks as needed.
But if they didn't get a good biome, Holly was screwed. So Kishka needed to find a fourth member, who could more than make up for Holly's glaring weaknesses in the arena. She had, for that purpose, been researching her classmates as well, going through midterms footage, recordings of exhibition fights, and her own notes, taken during combat classes.
The most ideal member would have been Rose.
She was strong, competent, and well-trained. She could handle herself well, and she was tough enough to outlast the brunt of Bel's assault. But she was also a bit of a loose cannon, at the best of times, and, much as Kishka liked her friend, she would probably vie for team leadership, which wasn't something Kishka wanted to deal with. Further, she was a definite hot commodity draft pick, and if she wasn't already on a team, the competition for her spot was stiff as hell. She didn't have time to waste waiting for Rose to consider a ton of options.
Theia was in largely the same boat. "Too many chefs," and if she wasn't leading her own team already, then she was going to be hit with offers from literally everybody.
Carmim was another pick, even if she dreaded the idea of working with the Mighty Midget. Her semblance was arguably the most powerful at the academy, and importantly, she had a solid chance of matching Bel's range and destructive output, even if she couldn't match the versatility of Light Manipulation. But Kishka didn't like her personality, for one, and there was a bit of ego at work too- Carmim had a solid shot of getting in the knockout blow after all, and that was unacceptable.
Besides, none of them were especially tanky, which is what Kishka was looking for.
Heidi and Nasrin would have been great for that role, except for the fact that she shared a mutual dislike with the pair. And they were a duo- that meant she'd have to drop one of her own teammates to take them on, which was just as unacceptable as letting the cheese goblin take Bel out.
Which left one option. She was surprised she hadn't noticed her sooner, actually.
Brigit Akane.
From the tapes she'd seen, and observing in-class sparring matches, she was a goddamn beast of a tank, with what seemed to be a bounce-back transformation semblance of some sort. She was tough as hell before it activated, but once it went off, she was damn near unstoppable.
Not to mention the rumors.
Could they even be called rumors at that point? Everyone knew about it. She'd been the one to kill that sociopath who tried to destroy the school or something. That was a fact that seemed to unnerve a lot of people, but Kishka was undaunted.
She did what she had to, to survive. That showed that she was willing and able to make tough calls under pressure, and a capacity for action, in the face of adversity. What Kishka couldn't have on her team was someone who would choke up when they saw that the odds were against them.
She had a feeling Brigit didn't really give a shit about odds.
Tough as hell, with a killer drive, unique weaponry, and a semblance that was geared for longer fights?
She'd be perfect. All Kishka had to do was let Bel burn off her own Aura with a frenzy of attacks, which Brigit could ideally tank, and then she could rush in and take her out. The rest of the team was easy to manage, after that point.
It was settled, then.
She had fired off a quick private message to Brigit from her Scroll, using the school's handy chat functions to find her username. It was the most convenient means of contacting her, considering they'd hardly, if ever, spoken before.
hey, brigit, right? you interested in competing in the vytal tournament? if so, i've got a proposition for you. meet me in the north training facility, if you're interested.
best, kishka burzanova
Now she was leaned against the wall of said facility, in the main room full of punching bags, weights, and other strength-building equipment, with a wide space in the middle, which could be used for sparring. Something she was dressed for- white athletic shorts and a black tank top, with her hair pulled back into a short ponytail. She wasn't exactly sure if Brigit was even going to accept her invitation or not. But if she did, then hopefully she'd get a chance to gauge the other girl's combat prowess for herself.
If nothing else, then she could get some work in, if Brigit was a no-show. But she really hoped she would show up. For one, she could definitely use the fourth member of her team for the festival.
And two, she was really itching for a good fight. Hopefully Brigit was too.

Brigit hadn't had anyone contact her directly in her entire time at Haven. She had been, for the most part, invisible. At least she was in the beginning. Then the attack on Haven happened and suddenly everyone in the school seemed to know her name and all the rumors that came with it. The rumors were true of course, a body didn't end up that mangled from just a fall and Brigit had even posted about it on the Haven text chat after all was said and done. So she had gone from being an invisible nobody to being an extremely visible person that almost nobody wanted to interact with unless they had some misguided desire to 'help' her with her demons. Demons that she was becoming more familiar and accepting of as time went on, if she was honest with herself.
As annoying as Aegle had been she had at least given Brigit a license, whether she intended to or not, to accept what she had done and frame it in her head as something that was good for her to have done and that it was fine that she felt good about it because she had killed a man that was doing evil things. The reasonable part of Brigits mind wasn't sure she believed any of that, but that part of her mind was also in a losing battle against the part that simply wanted the biggest thrills and the biggest adrenaline rush she could find. She was an addict, really.
So when she received a message from Kishka, she was primed to believe it was another Aegle episode, another person trying to help her. But Kishka had mentioned Vytal, and there were few other things that Brigit could think of right now that would allow her to sate her addiction as much as Vytal inevitably would. Wearing about as little as Brigit usually did, just a simple white T-shirt and nothing else, she marched her way over to the designated meeting spot. If Kishka had chosen to bait her here for any reason other than offering her a spot on a team for Vytal then she fully intended to pay her back for the wasted time by pounding her into the gym floor. But if it was genuine, and Brigit so dearly hoped it was, then she had every intention to join up.
She found Kishka leaning against a wall of the training facility. The other girl looked anything but threatening and honestly didn't match the few things Brigit had seen about her on the Haven text chat. /This/ was Kishk? Purple haired and skinny as a twig? Disappointing. Brigit approached, and likely could have been heard from a mile away with how loud her prosthetic metal legs were, every step bringing with it the click of clawed feet on the floor and the whirring of gears and whine of machinery. ”Kishka? I received your message. Explain yourself." Brigit crossed her arms, her face set in what looked to be a permanent scowl as she looked the other girl up and down, sizing her up now that they were close.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
The grinding of gears signaled Brigit's approach, but until the girl was in Kishka's field of view, she didn't really budge from her spot on the wall- there were a lot of students with prosthetic parts these days, after all. She was only interested in one of them.
A quick look confirmed that this was the same girl she'd seen around campus, and in the midterm tapes. Red hair, a good five inches or so taller than Kishka, and a resting bitch face that put hers to shame. Sporting a plain T-shirt, radiating an energy of "you really just made me get out of bed for this?"
Honestly? Didn't look like the cold, hard, killer type.
But looks were so often deceiving, as Kishka had learned firsthand, many times over.
She nodded in reply to the other girl's curt greeting, as she pulled away from the wall, stepping over to a more conversational distance from Brigit. "Straightforward. Appreciated. The reason I asked you to meet me here is because I plan on winning the Vytal Tournament. And out of every potential teammate that I am aware of, excluding the two already on my team, you are by far the standout among them in terms of ability and skill."
It was simple enough reasoning. She paused for a brief second before adding on the same elephant in the room that the metallic-limbed girl had heard from everyone who'd interacted with her since it had happened- might as well get that out of the air as quickly as possible.
"Honestly, I wouldn't have noticed you at all, if it hadn't been for what happened with that Nayamasa guy." Her eyes bore no sign of judgment, and her tone was as neutral as it had been since she'd begun speaking moments ago. "Frankly, I don't see why everyone's in hushed whispers over it. Fucker had it coming." She gave a little shrug. Ferric was a worthless bastard, even before he decided to go full-on school shooter mode. Hadn't been able to cut it as a Huntsman trainee, so he got shafted to Class Blue. It wasn't impressive that she'd beaten him in combat, or that she had stopped him from causing further destruction and chaos- anyone could have done that. Fucking Reynard could have done that.
What made it significant was that nobody else had.
It wasn't a big fucking achievement, stopping some asshole with a shitton of dust. But nobody else had gone out of their way to stop him. And she doubted that any of them would have had the force of will to do the job, anyways.
It was one thing to be physically capable of doing what was necessary to survive.
It was another thing entirely to fucking do it.
Brigit, like Kishka, and Argent, and even Holly, had done it. Whatever anybody at the academy had to say about her in response to that was irrelevant, because most of them had never been faced with that choice. Never had to wash the blood off their hands, only to find that they were stained.
And on some level, for that same reason, Kishka felt like she understood Brigit a little better than most. At the very least, she knew damn well that the redhead was going to crush shit in Vytal, whatever team she was on, so it might as well be the winning one. The same kind of stuff needed to snuff out a life in the interest of self-preservation was needed to go all-out in a tournament setting- a hard damn truth for some people, and an uncomfortable one for anyone who really thought about it long enough, without experiencing it.
No hesitation. You needed to be able to act on pure instinct, at 100%, no punches held, no overthinking shit. A mindset primed for victory.
Brigit had it. Kishka could tell, before she ever stepped into the gym. And she knew, staring eye to eye with her.
"Way I figure it, seems like most of the Academy's more than a little intimidated by you because of that, though- doubt any of them would ask you to fight with them in Vytal. Their loss." She gave another little nonchalant one-shoulder shrug, before locking eyes with Brigit again. "So," There was a hint of something burning in them, those violent storm clouds flickering over seas of violet.
"You up for it? Hell, if you want, we can go a round in a sparring room, if you want to vet my skills first. See for yourself if I walk the walk, all that."
On the one hand, she was hoping that Brigit was going to agree to her offer immediately. That would definitely make things easier, at least. But on the other hand...
A new alliance was never nearly as fun without a trial by fire, was it?

I For someone that looked like she could be blown over by a stiff breeze Kishka was probably the cockiest student Brigit had met in her short time at Haven thus far. And she was doing her damnedest to manipulate Brigit into doing what she wanted, with compliments and acknowledgements of her previous actions and of course the assurance that she had been Kishka's first choice to fill out her team and that her team would win. Of course Brigit didn't really care what Kishka said at this point, it was simply a formality to ensure that Kishka wasn't trying to fix her like Aegle had. Kishka was just another idiot student at a school full of weaklings and failures. But she happened to be an idiot with a gateway into the Vytal tournament and that was the only reason that Brigit was even bothering to consider her suggestion.
She stood stock still for quite a few moments, staring at Kishka and very unsubtly judging every part of the other girl that she could see. Her face though remained in the stoney frown that seemed to be natural for her face. ”Who else is on your winning team? You are not very impressive to look at and I doubt the others are either. What makes you so sure that you won't lose, let alone win?” Her voice was deep, and sounded almost metalic now that they were so close together and she wasn't bothering to try and talk normally. All pretense of her being a normal person was quickly going out the window really, as she began to flick her claws out of her fingers and retract then with each clench of her fist as she spoke.
She wanted to fight Kishka, she wanted to either beat her so badly that she realized she had no chance in Vytal or to be beaten and given a real reason to join the purple girls team. But she couldn't say that. Not yet. She had to give Kishka as much time as possible to make a fool of herself with words first, trying techniques that worked on other students that cared about flattery and confidence. Techniques that wouldn't work on Brigit, techniques that did little other than piss her off. The more anger for the fight the better.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
Something in Brigit's demeanor told Kishka that she would have to take a different approach here.
It was abundantly clear, at least, that Brigit was like no other student she'd met at the Academy so far. The way she patiently combed over Kishka's form was slightly unnerving, even to the otherwise fearless Burzanova, and her voice was as cold and robotic as her arms and legs. She definitely exhibited the kind of ruthlessness that she was excited to see in a potential ally.
Maybe a little too much ruthlessness, honestly.
After all, only one of them could go on to the final round. And she didn't even plan on taking Brigit into the duo rounds, honestly- it would be stupid not to bring Argent with her for those. She'd have to play her cards to her chest, in that case, if she wanted her for the early rounds. Something to consider for later, at least.
Fortunately, she wasn't too worried- Brigit wasn't stronger than her, she knew that much.
Or well. Maybe not empirically, but she could tell that, strong as Brigit seemed, she didn't have the training that she had. It wasn't a question of who between the two could win one on one, as much as, by how much.
And she hoped it was going to be a close match.
As Brigit spoke, the flicking of her metallic claws didn't go unnoticed for the thinly veiled challenge it was. It was clear that she was itching for a fight too.
Good.
Kishka spoke easily and confidently. "Argent Steele and Holly Hock. Argent is a skilled fighter at range, with a damn strong area-of-effect semblance, and Holly functions as defensive support, using plant manipulation to form barriers and ensnare opponents." She then allowed herself a small smile, like she was in on a joke that Brigit couldn't hear.
"And if I were you, I wouldn't let looks deceive. Like I said- you want to see what I can do, I'll be happy to give you a demonstration." She started towards the nearest sparring room, not more than ten feet from where they were standing, glancing at Brigit over her shoulder, expectantly. Whether she followed or not, Kishka strode to the door, and pulled it open, holding it as she turned back to Brigit, face set with a cocky half-smirk, lightning dancing in her eyes. This was going to be good.
"I take it from the fact that you showed up at all, you're interested in winning at Vytal, yeah? Well come show me what a Vytal winner looks like." If she wasn't going to respond to persuasive tactics, then maybe she'd be more responsive to something a little more tangible.
At the very least, it looked like she had some preconceived notions about Kishka that needed to be ironed out.
If Brigit chose to step towards the sparring room, the lavender-haired girl would usher her in first, before entering, herself. It wasn't anything too fancy, really- set up with tough, durable, mats and padding on the walls, more to mitigate damage to the room to provide any comfort for the students using it. Simple, and spacious enough- about fifteen meters on both sides. Not huge, by any means, but not too small either. Plenty of room to maneuver without worrying about hitting the walls too much.
Once they were both inside, Kishka strode towards the middle, drawing her weapon from the holster at her side.
To anyone unfamiliar with her and her fighting style, it would seem to be a pretty standard non-folding umbrella, with the classic hook-like handle, except instead of a point at the end, there was a small cylindrical extension of the umbrella's shaft, open, but otherwise not too conspicuous. And if one paid close enough attention, they might see the trigger built into the grip, aligned perfectly with Kishka's hand. She held it in her left hand, over the same shoulder, as she stood, waiting for Brigit to (ideally, and hopefully) get into position.
"Go ahead. Your move, Killer." She grinned, thin with bared teeth, like a tigress eyeing her prey.
She hadn't had a good fight since Rochdale...

Ah yes, Holly Hock. Brigit had seen a few things about her on the haven academy chat before she muted the entire thing when it got on her nerves. She seemed to have a semblance that was about as useless as Mr.Flashlights was, and far more limited in the environments that it could be used in. Growing plants was something for a gardener somewhere to do, not a huntress being trained to kill bandits and grimm, it was laughable. Did she even have a weapon? Brigit hadn’t heard anything about Holly actually, you know, doing her job and killing grimm during Rochdale. Argent was someone that Brigit knew literally nothing about. She’d never seen him make a post online, and she hadn’t really bothered to learn the names of anyone in any of her classes so even if she had seen him there was no way she would know his name. Still, the fact that Kishka was confident in Holly’s abilities of all people certainly put her opinions of anyone into question, and even more so her ability to judge good teammates.
But that didn’t really matter. Brigit would be the best one on the team even if Kishka did beat her now. The girl was thin enough that Brigit was confident she would be able to fling her off of the arena without much effort, an easy win. And the rest were no concern of course, especially not Holly. Brigit stepped behind Kishka, following her to the sparring room without even really thinking about it. It was a no brainer, even if this turned out to be a waste of time in every practical sense she could still get at least some thrill out of fighting Kishka, surely she couldn’t be totally inept, right?
”You talk too much. It shows you aren’t confident in your abilities. Or your ability to convince me of things without lavishing me with useless details that I did not ask for.” Brigit still had a steely quality to her voice, but it was obvious she was getting more excited as she entered the sparring chamber, her claws stayed out now and a moment later the blades on her legs were ready as well, sticking out with a metallic grinding and showing off their deadly edge, recently polished to a mirror shine during one of Brigit’s more lucid periods in her bedroom.
She angled herself as subtly as she could manage, not that Kishka would know to prepare for anything unless she had watched Brigit fight before, to have her thighs facing directly towards Kishka in an open stance that looked very much unlike any sort of trained position. And the moment Kishka gave her the go ahead, Brigit allowed the spiked chain projectiles from her thighs to launch forward, aiming directly at Kishka to either impale the girl or wrap around her to allow Brigit to pull herself in. But even if she missed and hit the wall behind Kishka, Brigit would activate the grapples and begin her lethal dash across the room along the chain cables as they spooled back into her legs, claws ready and prepared to sink into Kishka in a flurry of blows most resembling a berserker of old.
And the whole time Brigit had a massive grin on her face, a sadistic grin combined with one of near absolute enjoyment for what she was about to do. She was laughing.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
Kishka actually let out a laugh, which surprised even herself as Brigit made her remark. It was funny- and probably pretty damn true. She grinned, shark-like, at the other girl.
"Wrong on both counts, actually; I just like the sound of my own voice." She watched as Brigit stepped into the room and took her spot, a few meters back. It was always so intriguing, watching a new opponent prepare for a fight. Much as she tried to remain cool and confident, the excitement exuding from her was palpable, as she awaited Brigit's first attack.
She had a vague idea of her combat style, having watched her midterms videos and what sanctioned sparring records there were, but knowing that somebody fought with grappling hooks was a different matter entirely from expecting them, and knowing how to counter such a unique fighting style. So when the hooks burst forth from the metal-limbed girl's legs, Kishka was immediately startled. Fortunately, her instincts kicked in, and she was able to bodily respond well before her mind had caught up to the attack- as the hooks flew at her, she deftly swiveled to the left, almost leisurely batting the leftmost line just to the side as she dodged.
She didn't waste time waiting to see what Brigit did next- instead, she leveled her umbrella at the girl's chest and fired, with a resounding crack as a lead ball, nearly golf ball sized, was flung straight at the taller girl- just as she began her assault, reeling in on her grapples.
So she'd hooked into the wall, then... Either that had been her plan from the start, or it was some damn quick thinking on her part. Either way, it was impressive. Kishka grinned widely, as the madly laughing woman flung herself towards her. This was going to be fucking great. She stuck her free hand into her pocket, feeling for one of her spare lead shots. She primed it for use with her semblance, should she need it.
She then watched Brigit's approach, waited for the moment of impact, and timed her dodge just right- in one fluid motion, she opened the umbrella, still pointed at Brigit, and under cover of its wide shield, obscuring her movement, she twirled to the left once more, closing the umbrella just as Brigit passed her, and reached with the hooked end of the handle to attempt to trip the girl as she sailed by. Conservation of motion was key with a target that insisted on flying around the room, which worked greatly to her benefit anyways: she was much more interested in testing the girl's abilities than in beating her swiftly and soundly. It was much more interesting this way.
Still with one hand in her pocket, and one wielding her umbrella, she maintained her cocky grin as she struck a defensive pose, umbrella angled to defend against whatever other moves Brigit had left up her sleeve. This was going exceptionally well already.
It was rare for Kishka to face such a ballsy opening gambit, too- clearly Brigit had no idea who she was, or what she was known for, as a combatant, or she would have known that a brazen frontal assault would be easily avoided. But it was exciting, nonetheless. A good fight reminded her of a good game of chess, in so many ways; an exchange of moves, actions and reactions, and the knowledge that one can plan her moves, any number of steps in advance.
And still, on rare occasions such as this, it was still possible to be surprised. It was what she loved most about the thrill of a little bloodsport.
"Neat trick."
Yeah, she was going to fit nicely on her team for the tournament...

The cannon shot was a surprise to say the least, and it hit Brigit full force in the chest. She hadn't tried to avoid it either of course, that would take the fun out of it. It ate a solid chunk of her aura, causing a flare of orange-red coloration where she was hit, like a flame in her belly that was showing itself to the world in response to the massive impact. And that's what it was as far as Brigit was concerned, simply motivation and adrenaline to use in her defeat of the purple haired girl. It was inevitable after all, she would only be able to stay in shooting range for so long before Brigit grappled her yon place like she had with Aegle.
Brigit growled as she arrived at the end of her hooks, spinning around at the sound of Kishka's voice as she began to close the distance again, this time simply firing her grapples into the ground to launch herself forward as quickly as she could manage, claws spread and ready once again as she tried to get into melee with Kishka and wrap her arms around the other girl in her rather characteristic bear hug. She was ready for the misdirection of the umbrella this time and if Kishka tried the same thing again, Brigit would go for a dive towards the other girls legs, hoping to trip her since all else seemed to have failed.
She didn't bother dodging anything else that came her way on the approach, she was confident in the ability of her semblance to keep her going until Kishka was begging for mercy. Whether that would happen was up in the air of course but Brigit didn't tend to live in reality when she was like this, she was far too distracted by the fake feeling in her arms and legs that the adrenaline provided. Every part of her was starting to glow, the red wires in her face giving the whole thing an eery look and the red vents on her arms and legs whining with effort as battle was joined.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
It was interesting.
Exciting.
Analyzing a new opponent's fighting style on the fly. If Brigit were able, and inclined, to dodge her cannon, she likely would have. That she didn't implied several possibilities.
1. She had been caught unaware, and was surprised by the attack. 2. She was unable to dodge it, either due to low reaction time, low physical speed, or some combination of the two. 3. She didn't want to dodge it, as a testament to her durability. 4. She benefited from taking the attack at full force.
She was willing to rule out the first possibility from the start.
The look on Brigit's face as the attack slammed into her was one of mad thrillseeking enjoyment. She was intentionally reckless. She therefore doubted that the second possibility mattered very much- even if she had the agility to avoid the attack, she would generally choose not to. That meant either she was being boastful, conserving momentum, or she had a trick up her sleeve.
Figurative sleeve. Or literal- for all she knew, there could definitely be something other than a grappling hook hidden away in her arms.
And now that she knew there were hooks propelled from her legs, she knew to be wary of them.
Which meant that her decision to remain as she was, instead of gaining distance on what was obviously a melee fighter wasn't likely to be very smart, from a purely tactical standpoint. But this wasn't the kind of fight she wanted to finish as quickly as possible- she wanted to let it linger a bit, keeping the excitement going. Her blood was rushing through her chest, and the grin on her face was more than simple cocky posturing- she was enjoying herself quite a bit already.
The metallic-limbed woman fired at her again, and in anticipation of another attempted attack with the hooks, Kishka dropped her loose cannonball at her side, and watched as it lazily rolled across the floor, passing by the hooks as they planted into the ground in front of her. She stepped back, just as Brigit thrust herself forward again, and instead of poising herself to deflect the attack, as before, she merely brought up her umbrella, taking another crack at her with the cannon, and at the same time, brought the loose cannonball up with a flick of her fingers on her offhand, at the precise moment Brigit passed over it.
She doubted that either attack would give her much pause, if she was so confident in her durability, however, so as the lunge careened closer, Kishka deftly moved to side-step the attack. However, she hadn't anticipated that Brigit might dive for her legs, so as the grappler careened by again, she did manage to swipe Kishka's leg with her clawed arm, though, grazing her just as she managed to dodge out of the way.
She didn't waste the opportunity, this time, as oddly luminescent black flickers of Aura danced across her calf for a hair of a second.
She darted to the side, angling her weapon to defend if Brigit surprised her with a quick turn. Based on her grappling around, Kishka doubted she had much speed of her own, and the way she was propelling herself across the training room implied strongly that she was ill-equipped for anything but charging in straight lines. That was easily telegraphed movement, and Kishka could dodge that all day, frankly.
But it was still great to see. She wanted to gauge Brigit's actual abilities in combat, and while she was agile enough to avoid the attacks, she was well-aware that few other students in their year were, and indeed, she figured most second, even some third years, wouldn't be as capable of dodging as easily as herself. And Brigit seemed to still be going pretty damn strong, so she definitely did have the durability to back her shit up.
This was a highly entertaining fight. And an educational one.
She grinned, a wide predatory grin, the mere thunderstorms in her eyes replaced by rippling hurricanes, stormy and intense, violet as lightning strikes, and just as lethal. She wasn't sure if Brigit was still laughing or not, but even if she wasn't, at least one of them was- a familiar little bald girl flashed through her mind briefly as her own haughty cackle filled the air.
This was getting good, already...
With her umbrella poised for a quick defense, she continued to move away from Brigit, perpendicular to her last lunge.
And she dearly hoped that she had miscalculated her opponent's cunning, mobility, or both. It was always much more fun and interesting to be surprised, than to win so effortlessly...

Kishka was endlessly annoying to fight against. She didn’t have any skill of her own, she simply relied on her natural speed and a gun to get things done. Aegle had at least had the confidence in herself to use her own body in the fight, Kishka seemed intent on avoiding any physical exertion at all. It pissed Brigit off. She was growling as the cannonball hit her from below, cracking into her aura and bringing it right to the edge of shattering. Then her semblance activated. Brigit was briefly consumed in a ball of fire, and when she emerged on the other side she had horns of aura projecting from her forehead, devils horns, and the claws on her hands had been coated in the same aura flame. It did little to actually change the effect of the blows beyond the fact that Brigit was now MUCH stronger. The second cannonball hit her in the shoulder, cracking off at an angle as she dove into Kishka’s legs. Her aura was low, it was shimmering brightly and the cracks within it flowed like lava as the redhead glared at Kishka. She had managed a brief scratch, a moment of contact on Kishka’s aura, and that was enough to provoke further attempts instead of simply giving up this insanely boring battle.
Brigit launched herself up from the floor where she had slid after her attempted leg grab, sprinting towards Kiska at full speed without her grapples, which wasn’t anything too impressive but the room was small and Kishka only had so much room to avoid things before she would have to fight. Brigit aimed herself directly towards Kishka as she ran, hoping to force her back against a wall or a corner of the room. She knew that Kishka was likely going to fire her cannon again as Brigit closed the distance, so right as she felt she had made it obvious that her intended path was a straight line the redhead launched her grapples off to the side directly in Kishka’s path. She would either hit the girl as she ran and pull herself into grappling range, or she would hit the wall and get herself directly into her opponents way and make the following attempts to grapple her much, much easier.
Either way, the end goal was to not get shot again and to finally find a way to wrap her arms around the purple haired girl and disarm her. There was no way she had any strength in those scrawny limbs, Brigit would win if she could get a solid grip.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
"Damn."
It was all she needed to say, and indeed, all she could think, for a moment, as she realized what she should have noticed moments ago, when Brigit had clawed at her leg. The Aura pouring off of her was tremendous, and distinct from what little she could recall from seeing Brigit fight in classes and the midterm tapes. Flaming crimson claws, and demonic horns anointing her forehead- she looked far scarier, and far more deadly, than any Grimm Kishka had seen, including the Sea Feilong in Rochdale.
Well.
Maybe not as terrifying as the freakish Beowolves she'd spotted approaching as she and Argent fled for the ship... She had actually been afraid of those. She wasn't afraid of Brigit, whether or not that was a smart decision to make.
Still, it was impressive as hell watching her fight, and her style was definitely unique enough to make her a key piece in Kishka's team. Versatile, with her different avenues of mobility, and her strength, even though she wasn't exactly the most tactful combatant she'd ever fought. Against an opponent of equal intelligence to Kishka, she doubted that Brigit would fare much better than she was doing now. Fortunately, she doubted very much that there would be too many fighters in the tournament on par with her, mentally, which meant Brigit would have an upper hand against them. Likewise, she doubted anybody in the tournament would be as skillful as her, so Brigit could let loose without worrying about well-timed counterattacks and dodges.
She came charging in at Kishka again, and the purple-haired girl stared her down with an excited grin, anxious to see how this fight would end. Once again, she leveled her umbrella on Brigit with great speed, loosing a cannonball, but this time, something else happened. Something she should have anticipated, but didn't.
Brigit, instead of charging straight in as she'd done before, dodged to the side at the last second, launching her grapples forward at Kishka again, causing her cannon shot to fly straight past her, crashing into the training room wall hard enough to leave a dent in the metal.
Not one to be distracted by such a momentary distraction, Kishka easily sidestepped the grapples, letting them sink into the wall behind her, but she made no real move to step aside from Brigit as the girl careened in closer at alarming speed. The idea wasn't necessarily to let Brigit hit her, honestly, but it seemed she wasn't quite fast enough to evade her attack entirely- Brigit crashed into her like a lead wall, knocking a clean third of her Aura away in the process, and worse, she was partially successful in locking in her grapple. Kishka was able to move a bit out of the way, but Brigit still got a pretty firm grip on her offhand, as Kishka attempted to slam her umbrella hard against the side of Brigit's head, aiming to disorient her, and ideally break her grip. A grip that she noted was much stronger than she'd expected.
This fight was really getting exciting now...
She was determined to win, too. Sure, she mainly wanted to test Brigit's skills herself, but she had no intentions of letting the other girl defeat her so easily. For as direct and headstrong as Brigit was, Kishka was clever and tricky. It was a good match-up, and seemed to be getting pretty close, but the next few moves would decide the match, as she fully expected Brigit to go for a leg sweep and pin her to the ground- any good grappler worth her salt would do much the same, after all, and if she hadn't acknowledged Brigit's talent for grappling yet, then she was delusional. Thus, while she still had the opportunity, she made sure to discretely ready her umbrella with her semblance, just in case she needed it.
If she were in Brigit's shoes, after all, she would want to quickly disarm the opponent and use overwhelming strength to claim victory. Kishka hadn't exactly been showcasing any sort of physical strength thus far, relying instead on pure skill and marksmanship, so Brigit was either absurdly confident in her own physical prowess, or she had concluded from Kishka's reliance on sleight of hand and agility that she was the stronger of the two.
Either way, it was about to be quite interesting.

Brigit couldn’t help but cackle as she FINALLY locked down the annoying insect that she had been trying to swat for the entire battle thus far. It had been far more difficult than she expected when the fight started if she was honest with herself, but with the amount of adrenaline and sheer joy at finally catching Kishka and getting a solid grip on her made any sort of self honesty or introspection moot. She was lost to the battle now, and every inch of her body wanted to rip and tear Kishka into enough shreds to make confetti. Bloody, awful confetti.
Nothing was going to make Brigit let go of the arm she had gotten a hold of, and her metallic, claw grip tightened even further as the swing from Kishka came towards her head. She tried to move her head out of the way, but even a glancing blow from the umbrella - something that had no use as a weapon, wielded by someone with no strength in her arms to speak of - shattered what was left of Brigit’s aura much to her shock and finally made her release her grip on the arm. Her aura fell off of her in flaming sheets, and the horns and claws that had formed when her semblance activated fell away as well and Brigit was left staring at the umbrella that had hit her, standing there completely shocked that Kishka was able to do so much damage to her even in close range after all that had happened leading up to Brigit finally getting a hold of her.
On the one hand, she was excited, the adrenaline was pumping still and losing had just as much thrill as winning, if not more because her aura was gone now and she could, in theory, be killed if Kishka so chose. But on the other hand Brigit was utterly flabbergasted about what had just happened. Shocked and confused and annoyed. She stood there for a long few moments and eventually as the adrenaline faded and she plummeted back down to reality she held out one clawed hand to Kishka for a handshake.
”Your weapon is very powerful. How does it feel to rely on something else to carry you through your battles?” Aegle had been annoying, but at least she had fought with her body and her physical skill, not with being skinny to dodge attacks and using a fancy, expensive weapon to do all her damage. Brigit was guilty of this, but she had little choice. It was either fight with her weapons or have no limbs at all. But Kishka had the choice. And she had chosen to let a weapon fight for her. ”I will join your team for Vytal. I expect the fighters there will be more willing to actually fight me.”
Regardless of whether Kishka actually shook her hand or not, Brigit would eventually drop it and turn to leave without further comment. She’d said her piece, she’d agreed to what Kishka wanted, so she was going to return to her dorm and make sure none of her limbs had been damaged in the fight. And grumble about losing to a girl that had more in common with a noodle than a warrior.

KISHKA BURZANOVA
Unfortunately, she'd thought too many steps ahead.
Not a bad thing. But a little disappointing. She had wanted Brigit to hook the leg sweep, sink the pin, and give her the opportunity to catch her off-guard with her umbrella, which was primed and ready, in the event that she was disarmed. A win like this was, while still immensely satisfying, almost irritating. Wasn't Brigit supposed to be some big hotshot? And the way she'd acted, it made it seem all too clear that she was going to prove an incredibly challenging opponent. Who who may have even won- had she followed through with the most likely outcome, Kishka's odds of winning would have been significantly lower, along with her Aura. As it stood, she was looking to be about halfway, which wasn't anything to shake a stick at, but she wanted a much closer fight, to be honest.
It reminded her of that one girl she fought at Sanctum, to be honest. Huge meathead full of muscles, so it should have been a good challenge, but it turned out to be a complete bust; she kicked her ass so hard, she ended up leaving the kingdom or something. Very disappointing.
But she had to remind herself that this was still a successful venture. She knew that she was easily stronger than most second year students, let alone any other first years, shy of maybe Heidi. And that was only because Heidi had a good semblance that hard-countered her own skillset, at the moment. She had plans and strategies for dealing with that.
In any case, being able to win wasn't a pre-requisite for joining her team.
In fact, it could have potentially offset her plans considerably- her goal was to fight Bel, and that meant making it to the individual rounds, or at least the doubles, depending on the brackets. If Brigit was stronger than her, that'd sink her chances of getting to that point, if it was ever up in the air which of them would be allowed to move on in the tournament. And that just couldn't happen.
She grinned as Brigit stared at dismay at the umbrella that shattered her Aura.
She was damn proud of her weapon, but prouder still of her skill with it. So when Brigit finally spoke, she hardly took it as the insult it was likely intended to be; instead, she extended the weapon, handle first, to the taller girl, with a smile. If she wanted to take it, and see for herself why it was so powerful, she could. "Yeah, it's a good umbrella. But it's not the weapon. I am. For anyone else, it's just a fancy club with a trigger."
Even Colton, master of many melee and ranged weapons, would never be able to use Lucky 13 to its full strength. He could do some damage with it- serious damage. But he would never be able to pull off half of her most basic forms and strategies with it. He didn't have the training, and he wasn't skilled enough to use it to full effect. He lacked the technique. The finesse.
She took her umbrella back, with a flick of the wrist, using her Semblance to carry it back to her hand, after Brigit had examined it, if she chose to do so. And if she didn't, then she simply retracted the offered weapon, as Brigit pledged her entry to their new team. She'd have to think of a name, but for now, she was just pleased that she'd finally assembled her group in time for the tournament. More than enough time, even- they'd have plenty of time to train and work out some basic strategies.
Kishka accepted the handshake, marveling briefly at the make and texture of Brigit's mechanical hand. Her handshake was firm, matching Brigit's as best as she was able, and she was curious if the other girl could feel it through her prosthetic. Violet eyes met the slate grey of her new teammate. "Excellent. I hope so too."
And with nothing left to say, she hung back while Brigit headed off to her dorm. There was still a little time to get in some more work, after all, and her blood was still coursing hot through her veins after such a good fight. She'd definitely have to get a rematch with her at some point; maybe next time, Brigit would surprise her.
Goosebumps spread down her neck as she grinned to herself, heading into one of the bag rooms.
