Rochdale was over two months ago, and the aftereffects of that failed mission were still happening. One of the things that Shade never missed about working in groups was dealing with the emotional fallout from missions, both successful and failed. If a situation was bad enough to require a team of Huntsmen, it was bad enough that it was rare for no fatalities to occur during it. It was not only Rochdale, though, it was the Attack on Haven that also caused fatalities. [break][break]
Three in total among trainees across both of those events, with two of those going rogue to go along with one unambiguously heroic enough to get a statue outside of the dorms. Not counting trainees, the death toll was disgusting in Rochdale. Out of the 1200 villagers who lived in that town, only 345 made it to the capital at the end of the mission. They had saved barely more than a quarter of the occupants of that godforsaken place, which was unfortunate but not uncommon and even pretty good when compared to other catastrophic failure scenarios. [break][break]
She had stayed hands-off with the mental recovery of trainees and let the counselors and those much more confident with that sort of thing work with that. The reasons for that were as valid as they were numerous, but there were two main ones that stood above all others. The first one was that there was some feeling among the trainees that the situation and catastrophic failure of that mission was Shade’s fault, which was false but also not something that she really cared to contest or defend herself from the perception of. If they needed someone to blame and for whatever reason felt that the more logical choices of Qiu’li who drew the Grimm in the first place or the Order of Animan Nationalists that made sure Van Sange couldn’t come as backup were less at fault than she was… well, you can’t logic someone out of a position they didn’t logic themselves into in the first place. [break][break]
The second and quite frankly bigger reason was the fucking absurdity of the poster child of dealing with a catastrophic failure in the worst possible way advising others on how to deal with their feelings constructively. Someone who went on a downward spiral so bad leaving the entire kingdom was a better option than trying to mend fences at the end of it talking to others who had issues from a position of authority was laughable. Much better to let the Doctor or Lynn take care of it, or a third-party psychologist or trauma therapist. [break][break]
Shade had deliberately kept classes the same to provide a sense of normalcy and routine, and she was hyperaware that some of the trainees absolutely despised her for doing that but saw it as necessary. If she went lax on training after a catastrophic failure, then the possibility of a second one happening consecutively went up due to under preparation. Her class, even with Rochdale, had survived more missions than anyone in the rest of the school. They survived at least partially because they were trained well enough to have instinctive reactions that weren’t useless or detrimental to the goal of survival. [break][break]
Unfortunately, there were people who decided that two a day training wasn’t good enough and decided to add their own on top of that. Argent Steele was one of those, and frankly Shade’s initial strategy of waiting for someone else to deal with it or for the situation to resolve itself wasn’t working out the way she had hoped. The simplest reason is that the Doctor was overstaffed, and Argent didn’t interact enough in Lynn’s classes for her to take notice of him in the first place, so she didn’t see the change and just assumed he was always like this. [break][break]
She had asked him to come to her office when his last class ended, and that she would be there as well when her class ended at the same time… but on the other end of campus. If Argent went directly to the office, he would have gotten there about five minutes before Shadecloak did herself. He would have plenty of time to look around, and if he did, he would find perhaps a different sort of personal office than he might have been expecting. Students were rarely in this particular office, as the faunus preferred to conduct meetings in classrooms or outside rather than going all the way over here most times. [break][break]
The office of the lion Faunus was a bit different than those of her colleagues. For one, it was actually organized like someone was actually there more than once a year. Pictures and certificates of various things lined the walls. Her Huntsman license, the graduation photo of her former Team CBLT from Beacon, and assorted newspaper clippings largely from the team’s exploits in Faunus Rights Revolution. It was one that displayed clearly why she was there, and some people misunderstood that open display as one of pride or the purpose of these to boast. It was a defiant act so that nobody who walked through that door and looked around could question her competence or the fact that was she was qualified, especially with the challenge coins on her desk. [break][break]
One from Menagerie, one from the Council of the Vale, one from the Headmaster of Beacon Academy, three from the Council of Mistral, and various other ones signifying participation in various exercises or missions of particular importance, largely from the war. There were newspaper clippings on the wall for all of these, too, but those tended to get drowned out even with them being framed. The challenge coin stand was where all of them stood out individually, and it was faced towards the door so that it would be the first thing that anybody say when they came in. Her unique status as a Faunus Huntress gave her and her team more recognition and publicity during the war, as that was uncommon and a whole team worth of the same was unheard of. [break][break]
They were a novelty, but it was Shade’s semblance that got the other ones. While useless against Grimm, it was very good for use against almost anything else and the ability to slip in and out of even the most fortified areas unnoticed made her skills very valuable for a very long time. Her fighting skills were average at best, but her maneuverability and stealth made her an asset that the Mistral Council decided to keep close and committed by offering this faculty position to keep her in a position to be sent out whenever needed. It was an arrangement that no doubt had a time limit, but it had served well enough for year or so she had been a part of it. [break][break]
The team photo was hidden more on the wall, almost purposefully so compared to most others who liked their Academy team photos in plain view all the time. Usually team photos were front and center on the desk, not on the wall next to a Huntsman License out of view of the person sitting behind said desk. In it there were four obnoxiously happy newly minted huntresses, all four Faunus. One green and blonde-haired lion faunus, one silver haired orca faunus, one whited haired rabbit faunus, and one pink haired deer faunus. A much younger and much happier version of Theloria Shadecloak was on the far-left side smiling from ear to ear with her cheeks close enough to touch those of the pink haired deer faunus Faunus beside her. An unwelcome reminder of simpler times, and the ultimate and inevitable fate of most graduating teams… separation whether from personality conflicts or untimely death. [break][break]
The woman, dressed in her usual black and white three-piece suit, would unceremoniously come in and toss her black jacket on the leather chair behind the desk and a green weapon’s locker on the wooden table behind her desk. The white sleeves of her dress shirt were rolled up to her elbows, and she started talking before she even made eye contact with the snake faunus she had called into her office while she did those things. [break][break]
”Changes in behavior have become so apparent that even I noticed, so I called you in to get a sense of how bad it was and an idea of who to send you to for more professional treatment of whatever the root cause is.” [break][break]
The clatter of the weapons case ended just about when she made it to the chair and sat down to face Argent for the first time. Her tone was the same neutral and flat it always was, and when she sat down she continued: ”Well, I know what the root cause is. The root cause is Rochdale, but it also depends on what specific thing about Rochdale is the issue, I guess. If you’d prefer not to talk with me about this, that’s fine on the condition that I set you up with a meeting with either Lynn or the Doctor to discuss it with them.”
