NINA RIVERS
Hark now, hear the sailors cry,
Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
The shark faunus nodded enthusiastically at Sinopia's questions, a big smile on her face as she tried to hurry up and finish her bite of food before speaking again. Eventually, she got it down, and added, "Yeah! 'Course it's okay. Why wouldn't it be?" Food was always an interesting thing to think about- everyone ate it, and everyone had different beliefs and traditions with it. Nina didn't know a lot of the fancy words and stuff for that, but she learned from what she saw, and she saw a lot of different ways people treated food- Ana had been sweet and sometimes overbearing, giving her way more to eat than even she could handle, with her voracious appetite; Gra-... ugh. Granado had shared his food with her every night, when she stayed with him, and before that, his family and his village were kind and generous with their food.
Clay was stingy and rude. He made her buy and make her own food, even when he had food at his house.
And the Seraphines all highly valued food- it was a part of their lives, as a fisherman's family, and it was treated with respect. At the same time, they believed in being giving. If a neighbor was hungry, they brought him food; if somebody was sick, Selene would make them soup; if someone was poor and couldn't afford much fish at the market, Set would slip a little extra in their bag. And when she'd come to Menagerie, they'd taken her in and given her all the access to food she could want.
So it was only natural that she would view sharing food as something natural, even expected- plus, it was just a nice thing to do. Sinopia had let her drag her around town, so that she could buy Nina food. The least Nina could do was offer her a bite!
She waited in suspense as Sinopia took her little bite of burrito, and reacted to it with as much sensory confusion as she had. She grinned as she saw her friend's blurry face light up with surprise, and the much-more-excitable words that followed confirmed that she had, in fact, been wrong about Sinopia being the kind of person who didn't have opinions about stuff. She had lots of opinions! Really good, interesting ones! You just had to give her food to get them out of her.
"I know, right!? I didn't know meat could taste like not-meat stuff at all, but especially not super-sweet stuff! Plus, I didn't even know you could put meat and fruit together, like- what! Maybe like, cactus and crab, but not like chicken and this mushy stuff, y'know? Way cool." She grinned, and went to take another bite of her own burrito, before she noticed Red offering her own. "Hey, thanks! Yours smells really good, haha." Accepting the offered burrito, she did her very best to try and take a smaller bite, which was a little tricky, given her teeth were made for tearing off big chunks of food. She managed, though, cleaning biting off a little chunk, somewhere between the size of her bite of her own burrito, and Red's tiny bite.
The flavor was definitely very different from the burrito she had ordered, and she was pretty sure she liked this one a little more. She liked meat a lot, and eggs, so it made sense. Plus, it was more like what she was used to eating- she didn't eat very many sweets in Vacuo, and the ones she did eat were way more normal than her dessert burrito- that thing was fifty times sweeter than any cactus fruit or melon she'd ever had, for sure. Most of her meals in life thus far had been either savory, or painful. Not that she was always opposed to the latter- spicy food tasted good, but it definitely took a toll on her, considering she sometimes thought milk had a little kick to it.
"Mmm! Mmm-hmmm..." She managed to choke down her bite of breakfast burrito, before grinning at Sinopia and handing her food back to her before the temptation to eat the whole thing had the chance to overcome her friendship instincts. "Wow, that one's good!! Bun gusto! It's like they stuffed a whole big family breakfast in a little pouch! This place is awesome, the cook must be a genius for inventing these things." Excitedly, she returned to scarfing down another huge bite of her burrito.
This was absolutely the best day of her life so far. She was sure of it.
Delicious, weird, super-sweet food, a fun first day of school, and a new friend. What more could she ask for? Speaking of school, if Sinopia was in the same class as her, it was probably her first day too- in all her excitement, she hadn't really asked her about that at all yet. Between bites, she glanced back over to her new pal with a toothy smile, not too self-conscious to be bothered by the sauce on her cheek, and the little bite of chicken caught between her teeth. She'd worry about those later, whenever she noticed them.
"So! What'd you think about school today? Have you ever been to one before? I haven't, today was my first time, but it was really cool! At least once Slate got everyone to shut up so I could hear the teacher lady haha. But once I could hear what they were saying, it was like- wow! I didn't know Vacuo was all the way real far away from here! Or well, I kinda did, because getting here took a long time, but like, I couldn't really see anything from the inside of the boat, so I just sorta left there, and a bunch of days later, I woke up here, but like. There's a whole two other kingdoms between here and there!!"
It was actually a little strange to Nina, speaking so candidly about her journey to Menagerie; there was a while, when she first arrived, that she didn't really want to talk about it at all. She was still feeling hurt and betrayed by that stronzo dumb boy, and scared because she didn't know where she was, or where she was going, and angry because of the humans who hated her and wanted to throw her on an island somewhere.
Even if it was a cool island that was way better than that dumb boat anyways.
But there was just something about Sinopia that set her at ease, and let her open up a little more than usual. She was a really good listener. "What about you? You learn anything really cool today?"
