"No, I don't sleep upside down hanging from the ceiling. Weirdo."
[attr=class,cs-main]
Date of Birth: April 17th, 7 av
Species: Faunus, possessing bat ears and wings
Romantic Orientation: Heterosexual
Aura Color: Purple with streaks of burgundy
Height: 162 cm
Weight: 65 kg
Color Naming Rule: Vesper means evening in Latin, while also referring to vespertīliō, meaning bat in the same language. Dubonnet is a type of aperitif wine and a color.
Semblance Name: Sonar
Rank of Semblance: E (+1)
Semblance Type: Passive
Primary Category: Social/noncombat
Secondary Category: Social/noncombat
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Vesper has the passive semblance of Sonar which allows the wielder to emit a 'wave' to identify her surroundings.
Description of Semblance: Vesper emits an invisible 'wave' from her body as long as she has aura, which bounces back to her when it comes into contact with objects. This allows her to get a clear image of every shape in her surroundings within the reach of a telephone pole (10-12 meters). With each pulse, she gets a clear image in her mind of people or objects as long as there is in one way a direct path to them. If you hold up four fingers behind your back, her semblance is able to get a reading on that. Stand behind a corner ready with a camera to take an unwanted picture, she can sense that. Pervert. Put money in a closed safe and she cannot see inside of it as there is no direct path to it.
Drawbacks of Semblance: Her semblance has an interval of around 3 seconds each pulse, meaning that she more gets a slideshow of events instead of a moving picture show. She is also unable to discern materials, colors or extreme details. Nothing like heartbeats or how many pimples you have on your face!
Weapon Name: Boombox
Rank of Weapon(s): F (0)
Category: Combatants/Destruction
Description of Weapons(s): Vesper's weapon of choice is also her instrument of choice. It is a large circular boombox that has a firework launcher built into it that can shoot a variety of dust-enhanced rockets. She uses it primarily as a prop during performances, but it would technically also be a devastating enough weapon in combat. The primary rocket type she uses are fire-dust rockets that just give a sparkly red blast when shot. It is also her only type of Rocket, because rockets aren't cheap!
Pro-type, she doesn't yet properly know how to fire this weapon. She just asked Kos Mos for it and she gave it to her, thinking she would at least know how to use it before asking for it. Vesper does not.
Inspiration for the idea, might make a custom one when I upgrade the weapon. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Name of Non-Combat Ability: Showbiz Kid
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: E (+1)
Category: Social/noncombatant
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Vesper grew up surrounded by talented performers and artists. Sadly, she herself is not talented. The bat can dance in the background and just about carry a tune, but that is were her talent ends. She does however have moxy, and a good enough idea how to differentiate yourself in the group to be marketable.
Name of Non-Combat Ability: In her Mother's loving Shadow
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: D (+2)
Category: Social/noncombatant
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Despite not even in the city they grew up in and not even being the same species of Faunus, Vesper is overshadowed in name-recognition and star power by her mom. Even in interviews, she is more often than not asked how it is to be the child of 'Midnight' before anything else. Dropping her mother's name in conversation and getting more out of it than her own, is still the reality.
Name of Combat Ability: Glide of the Bats (Flight)
Rank of Combat Ability: F (0)
Category: Obstacle/Mobility
Description of Combat Ability: Vesper is a horrible flyer, as she never properly trained for it and she claims that her wings have not fully grown yet. Don't Bully. At the moment she can only fly for about 5-7 meters at a time before she is forced to come back down again. It is also more gliding than flying, but don't mock her for it! She tries really hard to be more aerodynamic!
Name of Combat Ability: Dodge the bullet (Agility)
Rank of Combat Ability: F (0)
Category: Hazard/Survival
Description of Combat Ability: Partly because of her semblance, and in part because she is light on her feet, Vesper is good at dodging actual attacks is she is able to dodge questions about why her dad 'really' left.
Primary Drive: Vesper believes that she must help provide for her mother and her friends by making sure they earn enough money, as well as thinking that she can get her estranged father to be a positive part in her life again. This is why she does everything she can to make whatever project she engages in to be profitable. She does not air this believe to others, as she also believes that this is normal behaviour that nobody really talks about.
Fears: The girl thinks that if people are mad at her or abandon her, this is ultimately her fault in each and every case. Either because she said something that was wrong, or she didn't say to have made the situation right. Because of this, she fears most of all that she is the cause of everything bad that will ever happen in any form of relationship. Beyond this, she is afraid of large dogs, the elderly, and trains.
Style of Self-Expression: Vesper is in most situations a bratty teen who seems to be obsessed with garnering wealth from either her fans or her manager. On the other hand, she almost never spends this money on herself and gives it either all to her mom, or saving it for her 'secret project'. While she is chatty and has a particular charm to her words and actions, she always has an aura of smugness surrounding her. She can become super moody if someone is angry or not happy, even if she is not the cause of this behaviour.
Most Important Thing: Beyond anything else, Vesper wants her mother to life a comfortable life and her dad to stop being a deadbeat. She would abandon her idol group in a heartbeat if she could get to those things. She believes that the only way she can do this is to ensure she has enough lien to provide for them for several lifetimes.
Whoever said that you cannot buy happiness, never had a deadbeat dad and a single mother taking care of her daughter. Vesper Dubonnet was born in Kuchinashi to a young lounge singer calling herself Midnight and a traveling Huntsman named Zuma, who was charmed beyond believe by a 'great pair of legs and a beautiful voice'. Both of them were Faunus, though how a female black jaguar and a male honey badger got a bat for a daughter is anyone's guess. It is also anyone's guess why Zuma decides to walk away from it all when Vesper was not even a year old, leaving Midnight a single mother. Working nightly hours and having family in town to drop her off, Vesper upbringing was unusual.
Midnight had a few spots in the city that allowed a Faunus like herself to perform, and Vesper was basically raised in the backstage areas of those clubs. Had she been human, Midnight could have easily made it big even in the Cloud District in the capital. Now, she was the main act for the more tolerant clubs and bars. The owners either approved of her bringing her child along, or weren't entirely aware of it before the little bat toddler had endeared herself to the other artists and workers. She was unusually quiet, well-behaved, and agreed to a lifestyle of being awake at the evenings and nights, while sleeping during the day.
For as far as she can tell, Vesper always remembered having her semblance as a part of her. At first she thought that everyone had this ability, because she had it and as it was so thoroughly unimpressive, nobody noticed it at first. As a child she always secretly believed that her father helped unlock it while she was just a baby, and that it was his gift for her before he needed to go save the world from monsters.
Growing up in this environment, from the moment she could talk, walk, and perform tasks, she became the helping hand of many performers, but primarily her mom. Her education was in applying make-up, artists practicing their routines, and making last-minute repairs to stage outfits. In the clubs her mom performed, she eventually became a normalcy. Some saw her as a mascot of sorts, others as a cheerful enough distraction of an otherwise stressful and high pressure working environment. She was very fond of one white haired lady who was always extra nice to her, and her mom even let her sleep in the apartment once or twice. That was rare. The details are fussy who she was in her head, but she made Vesper feel safe. All in all, Vesper was a young Faunus with no better prospects than eventually filling in the shoes of her mother and performing on stage as well.
Vesper was not really all that talented in the same way her mom was. At all. While she inherited the natural charisma of her mom, neither her voice nor her figure resembled the talented nightlife spectacle. As she got older and started to become more aware of her surroundings, she started to realize that the songs her mom sung more suggestive than she thought at first. That the public that saw her perform, both Faunus and human, seemed to be even more interested in watching the sway of Midnight's hips than her voice. When her mother sometimes wasn't there when Vesper woke up in their cramped apartment, Midnight always said that she was sleeping over at a friend. With all the patterns, the meaning of 'friend' in this context began to become clearer and clearer over time.
When the 15 year old Bat confronted her about her suspicions, all that she said while hugging her daughter was that everything she did, she did for her daughter. To afford that apartment, clothing, food, and everything else that was so hard to get for many Faunus.
It was the only time she saw her mom cry.
Vesper vowed that she would one day ensure that her mom would never have to do such things ever again.
Her first solution? Try to contact her dad. Despite abandoning his daughter, he actually sometimes send a card and even at rarer times some 'money for her birthday'. Even if he never got her age right. At least he got the date right. She even saw him once or twice when he came into Kuchinashi for a job. Mom always yelled at him. Still, he wasn't there now, and not knowing where he was...Vesper needed to pull this of on her own.
Having basically been brought up in a select number of clubs, she started to pull her own weight soon after that. She began dish-washing in the kitchens, scrubbing the stage, and every other type of menial labour you could imagine. She became brutally aware how much a young Faunus like her earned with that, and that was even in places that were sympathetic to her and knew her for years.
It wasn't enough.
Being crafty enough, she found out that some of her mother's regular patrons seemed to be...connected. They dressed better, liked to tip generously even when her mother needed to give most of it away to the owners, and seemed to be in one way or another 'untouchable'.
She started to hang around those types of people. Carefully and slightly afraid at first, but when they realized who her mom was, and some of them having that kind of intimate relationship with Vesper's mother, they didn't mind her running errands for them. Getting them cigerates from the stores, running mundane messages, and even just chatting with them when they were bored. They talked about her having a future in their world, and that it would pay way better than whatever her mom was making currently. They showed her how she could take care of herself in a fight, and even how to shoot a gun! Vesper thought that she was going to save herself and her mom and provide for them a better life.
When Midnight finally found out that her daughter was getting incredibly cozy with the local mob to the point that they could initiate her any day now, she did the only thing she could think of as a mother. Take her baby girl and skip town, and don't look back. She boarded the next airship to the capital, taking her daughter despite her kicking and screaming.
The bat was furious. After years of trying to find a way to get herself and her mom everything they deserved! She couldn't understand how they could just leave everything behind!
Her mother used every connection she had when she arrived in Mistral. Someone who she used to 'be friends with' in Kuchinashi owned a bar in the Ground District where she could serve tables. A place called 'The Heaven's Gate'. As Midnight skipped town while being under contract by the kind of people you do not want to cross, the Ground District was as good as she could get while laying low. Calling herself Camilla Dubonnet, and getting her daughter to use the name as well. They got an even smaller and crappier apartment, and Vesper wasn't even allowed to go into the streets.
She was at the end of her wits and almost ran away when her mother came home one night. With Vesper's dad. They were back 'together' again. He had been living in Mistral. For over twelve years. He didn't move into the apartment, and he sure as hell didn't pull his 'wife' and daughter out of it. Vesper was now suddenly allowed to leave, but only after dad stayed for dinner and needed to 'talk privately with mom'. Actually beginning to give up hope, Midnight told her that she had found a job perfect for Vesper.
She said knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew someone who was getting a bunch of girls together to form a music group. She had gotten Vesper a chance to audition. In truth, she contacted the nice white-haired lady Vesper didn't even remember, and persuaded her to help her daughter. A former 'special' colleague named Aladriel Noir who she taught a lot of her skills before the cow-faunus made them her own by putting her personal spin on them. Midnight made her case to the new manager of this new group, and got her daughter a spot.
Vesper herself was overjoyed to be around girls more her age, and that she wasn't cooped up in that smelly apartment anymore. She was going to give this job her all, and make sure that one day she could get her mother out of this whole mess they were living in currently.
And the rest is no longer her history alone.
