The world is rife with secrets I intend to divine.
[attr=class,cs-main]
Date of Birth: August 1st, 9AV
Species: Human
Romantic Orientation: Who's got time for that?
Aura Color: Arterial red.
Height: 160 cm | 5'3"
Weight: 59 kg | 130 lbs
Color Naming Rule: Valentine is associated with pink. Varden is an Armenian name meaning rose, which is also associated with pink.
Semblance Name: Unmask
Rank of Semblance: E
Semblance Type: Clone (Single)
Primary Category: Combatants (+1)
Secondary Category: Obstacles (+0)
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Valentine has the single-clone semblance of Unmask which allows the user to wield a summoned knight that can exert physical force, allows the user to move while activated, and has nonzero durability. [Appearance]
Description of Semblance: Unmask is a sentient semblance... Or at least, they would like to believe they are. Perhaps as an extension of her own hubris, Valentine doesn't quite see her semblance as something that has its own thoughts, feelings, and desires- and this frequently puts them at odds. The ability to summon her semblance is granted by an adrenal response- specifically, extremely strong emotions (panic or fury) or pain strong enough to bruise or otherwise draw blood.
Her semblance is something of a dark mirror of herself- the parts that she won't (or can't) acknowledge. Where she's impulsive and loud, they are quiet and contemplative, rarely speaking if not spoken to. They also seem to hold ethics in higher regard than Valentine- often refusing to work altogether if they do not believe that their wielder is acting in a morally upstanding manner. With her code of conduct often being described as loose, this is a source of great conflict.
In terms of appearance, her semblance is about 225 cm tall. They wield a sword with a 175 cm long blade, but for the purposes of mechanics (damage received, etc etc) this sword is an extension/aspect of their body.
Drawbacks of Semblance: Cooperation. For better or for worse, Valentine and her semblance are often at odds. If they cannot agree on a course of action, all Combatants category benefits are removed and replaced with a flat -1 modifier until they can get on the same page. Furthermore, while active, Valentine and her semblance cannot go more than 3/4ths their maximum range away from each other (rounded to the nearest whole number for simplicity). If they are out of this range for one post, it causes debilitating pain centered in the chest. If they are out of this range for another post or otherwise leave their maximum range altogether, the semblance forcibly deactivates for 3 posts.
Weapon Name: Revolver Bayonet
Rank of Weapon(s): E
Category: Combatants
Description of Weapons(s): A long bayonet with a small rotating cylinder that can hold 6 bullets. Because it was designed to be used without dust, it's considerably weaker than other firearms and more often than not is non-lethal. Perhaps in the future, Valentine will be able to afford higher caliber weaponry, but for now, her Revolver Bayonet is much more useful as a glorified spear or blade than a rifle... In terms of dimensions, the bayonet is 80 cm long, with the 'spear' portion extending 30 cm off the edge, for a total of 110 cm long altogether.

Name of Combat Ability: Think Fast! (Agility)
Rank of Combat Ability: F (+0)

Description of Combat Ability: Valentine falls a bit behind in melee combat- it's a lot easier for her to avoid it altogether.
Name of Combat Ability: The blood goes on the inside (First Aid)
Rank of Combat Ability: F (+0)
Category: Combatants
Description of Combat Ability: Statistically, having team members with a passable knowledge of first aid can drastically reduce casualties. ...Either that, or Valentine just thinks medicine is cool.
Primary Drive: Valentine's deepest desire is to understand the natural world through any means necessary. She joined Sanctum (and later the academy) on a scholarship that promised research funding if she kept her grades up and remained in the program for 4 years post graduation.
Fears: Failure. Valentine's built up her sense of self worth on her abilities and her usefulness- and if she messes up too much or for too long, she won't be 'useful' anymore. Excessive failure can send her spiraling in a vicious cycle of self-flagellation. Smaller fears include unsanitary food and water, abandonment, and getting stung by insects.
Style of Self-Expression: Valentine tends to be loud and confident, but this presentation masks inner anxiety and low self-worth. Coming from a poorer family, she can find it difficult to fit in, so she uses her attitude to make any slip ups look intentional. Although she wants to make friends, she knows she's not the easiest person to get along with... And it's a lot easier to never really have any than it is to deal with rejection. If there's anything good to be said about Valentine, it's that she tends to accept differences in others without reservation.
Most Important Thing: Valentine is primarily driven by an obsessive, all-consuming need to uncover the secrets of the world around her. Although she considers herself a good person in general, she knows that deep down there might not be a limit to how low she'll bring herself to get the knowledge she craves. This obsession with knowledge is her greatest strength and greatest flaw simultaneously.
Born to a lower-class family in Mistral, Valentine's had her eyes set on bigger things from a young age. She loves taking things apart to see how they work- and the world is the biggest puzzle of them all. Although her family immigrated from Vale several decades ago, they integrated fairly well into the surrounding world's culture, making a few valuable connections along the way. Recently, however, the Vardens have fallen on hard times, and ultimately the research of just another peasant won't put food on the table.
She registered for every scholarship she could at fifteen in hopes of setting a career on track, not expecting to actually win any. Perhaps it was her way with words or clear ambition, but she was called back to Sanctum for additional testing. At this, she was presented with an ultimatum- they'd fund her research, but only if she transferred into Haven Academy and served for four years upon graduation. Any slips in grades or discipline, and any and all funds would be revoked.
She accepted with only a few minutes' hesitation. There she spent three years training body and mind, bringing her education up to speed when compared to better-off students, and graduating roughly middle of the pack. That was fine with her and her sponsors, however- she was meant to be more of a field researcher than a direct combatant.
Her intense focus and offbeat personality have rendered her rather isolated with regard to her peers. They were acquaintances at best. Psychological testing at Haven academy revealed generalized anxiety and mild asperger's, which resulted in her having mandatory therapy sessions once a week. The physical testing was passed with flying colors- the years at Sanctum paying off.
Currently, she's in her second year, having spent much of her first in a laboratory environment- but her own isolation might make her an unknown to her peers.
