KISHKA BURZANOVA
Midterms.
Kishka didn't think they were going to be a good use of her time, effort, or energy. But she still made sure to wake up on time anyways, in spite of the time being "ass crack of dawn o'clock." Seriously, they couldn't have started a little later in the morning? And a different day would have been nice too- she'd been really looking forward to Argent's birthday for some time now, and had totally forgotten that they would be spending it potentially far apart in a shitty forest, doing shitty tasks.
She tied her red ribbon around her wrist as she finished packing her bag. It was a hiking backpack filled with mostly basic provisions. Two large canteens of water, several bags of assorted pre-packaged food, a few changes of clothing, a small tent and bedroll, and assorted supplies and tools, like a small shovel, a hatchet, survival knife, a compass, and a coiled rope. Matches were also present, as well as the allotted dust rations she had been instructed to bring. Two Gravity, and one Fire dust. Useful, very practical, choices. That, and they were easily her two favorite dust types.
Throwing on her spare Haven Academy Combat Uniform, she set out for the launch area.
Upon arriving, it was interesting to note the placement of the other trainees- she was wedged between some short guy, and Theia, who she offered a friendly smile to, by way of greeting. And upon reading the little notebook sitting before her, as Shadecloak instructed, she understood why. So they were grouped by rank? And hers appeared to be... 9.
She smiled to herself, beaming with a bit of proud. Top ten. As she should have expected. It was low, but looking at the people ahead of her, she was mostly not surprised- maybe with the exception of Clover, and Qiu'li being ranked so highly. Aside from those two, though, the rest of the top five made way too much sense. Colton was an absolute beast of a student, and not even she could argue with that. He was a strong leader, and gifted in combat, so him being first (she refused to acknowledge Carmim's rank at all, beyond laughing for a moment at the fact that she'd beaten Colton) was reasonable.
She didn't know the newer girl, but from what she'd seen of her fight with Colt, she was pretty damn good too. Definitely a worthy contender for the top five. Who knew? Maybe they might meet in the forest, get to know one another.
The one she was most excited about, though, was seeing Argent ranked so highly. She grinned widely at him, with a little wave. She was so proud of him and his cute little face. He had done it- gone and surpassed her expectations entirely too well.
After him, Elena, Erytheia, and some short chick were ranked higher than her, from what she could tell. Pretty fairly, she figured- Elena had a ridiculously strong semblance potential, and Theia was a fellow Sanctum graduate. She honestly thought her rank was justified, mostly. As justified as it could be, aside from the dirt-eating brigade being mistakenly slotted higher than her.
Looking back down the other way, she quickly spotted a familiar face on the other side of the halfling boy, and it brought a fucking grin to her face. She made a crude gesture to the purple-clad bitch standing there, but didn't really care if she saw her or not- all she cared about was the fact that she was ranked higher than Prince. Fuck her. She was still absolute garbage for the way she treated Niraya.
Speaking of whom, Kishka was pleasantly surprised to see on the other side of Prince. She shot Niraya a smile and a wink, wishing her good luck. Maybe they'd meet up? Would be nice, working with someone she got along with. Those were a rare breed, after all. She glanced back up at Argent, to her right. A rare breed, indeed. She really hoped they would have some time together in the forest as well...
Returning her gaze to the person left of Niraya, moving down the line, she saw an odd, frumpily dressed pink-haired child standing there, and next to her, another pink-haired chick with only one arm. Seriously? They let people like that in here? Man, Haven was desperate. No offense to amputees, but a Huntress with one arm was considerably less effective than a Huntress of equal skill with two arms. That was a simple, stupidly obvious, fact.
A few more nobodies filled out the middle ranks, none catching her interest especially, until she got to Evangeline, who she offered a friendly smile. Sure, the girl had managed to eke out a win in class the other day, and it wasn't a loss she was going to easily forget, but she had to give props where they were due- kid's semblance was solid. And she wasn't a bad combatant, if a lot inexperienced and unsure of herself. Kishka just knew she could mold the little violinist into something spectacular. Plus, hanging out in her room for the slumber party was awesome fun. She never knew Eva was so capable of letting loose like that, with just a few gulps of liquor in her...
On the other side of Eva was a face she definitely hadn't wanted to see. Ugh. Reynard. She made a mental note to avoid landing near him at all possible costs. It didn't even surprise her that he was in the bottom five, either. The next one down was the girl Colton had ripped apart in a one on one fight the other day, and on the other side of her was...
Ugh.
Aegle.
She still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about the Kid. On the one hand, she was hopeless as a Huntress. Abysmally, horribly, hopeless. She had a handful of redeeming traits, sure, but so did a rock. Except she would much rather have a rock with her on a Huntsman mission than Aegle. The girl literally had a fucking heart attack in the middle of class, costing their team a win, and proving once again that she was hardly qualified to leave the safety of an intensive care unit, let alone to join a Huntsman Academy.
Just further proof of lowered standards. She shook her head with a sigh before catching Nikolas's eyes.
She couldn't help but grin, her face displaying her amusement. He was ranked even lower than Remnant's least effective cripple. Wow. That took fucking skill. Nik had to have planned that out. Nice. Fucking nice. He seemed to notice her staring at him, and offered her a customary Burzanov greeting between the two of them- he simply blinked at her, in a very deliberate manner, to which she responded by blinking back.
Great.
Now that she had a mental picture of who was ranked where in the class, she leafed through her notebook. Number Nine... It felt pretty good, knowing she was finally almost being recognized for the wonder she was. Now... Her objectives were pretty simple as a Rose. Help two other trainees complete objectives, and don't let their chickenshit asses quit on her, or she'd have to start all over. Easy enough. It wasn't like she wasn't used to carrying weaker students through missions anyways, this was just par for the course.
Rank Twenty-two. Nikolas Burzanov. Rose.
Just like that, the launch began. She readied her bag in her hand and remembered her landing strategy. The notebook fit snugly in her thigh pocket, Eighteen. Seventeen. Sixteen. Fifteen. She smiled to herself, a confident glowing grin. She withdrew Lucky 13, gazing at the beautiful weapon, recently tuned up and readied for this event. Thirteen. Twelve. She watched as the strange pink-haired girl flew out, as well as her fox faunus friend, were flung far into the forest. This was getting exciting.
Eleven. Ten. She was next. Prince flew out, followed by the short guy, and she turned to Argent, offering him a little wink and a blown kiss, before her attention returned to the launch pad she was standing on. She braced herself, extending her closed umbrella forward in her dominant hand, holding onto her back with her offhand, to ensure it stayed in place.
Adrenaline coursed through her veins, as time came to a standstill.
She knew who she least wanted to run into right away. She would try to shoot for somewhere near Niraya, if possible, but considering her landing method, it was far easier to avoid people than to follow them. She'd have almost went with Nik, but it looked like the Kid had already chased after him. No thanks. She liked passing her midterms, after all.
Chunk. The launchpad jolted up as Shadecloak listlessly announced her name and rank.
Kishka Burzanova, Rank Nine. Rose.
This was it. Her hand tightened around the umbrella's handle as she soared into the sky. It was exhilarating- her eyes widened with glee as she saw the forest approaching in the distance. To her left and right were other students, some further ahead, some far behind, flying along, but she could hardly see them with the wind whipping at her hair, making it hard to see anything but what was right in front of her.
She began arcing down, in her descent, and chose now to raise her umbrella overhead, flicking the switch to open it. Much like a parachute, it snagged on the wind, jerking her up for a brief second, before she began to fall, a hair slower. The closer she got to the ground, the more she used her semblance on the umbrella, fighting gravity as she floated to the forest floor below. Slowly, softly, she planted her feet firmly on solid ground, closing and sheathing Lucky 13 in a fluid motion.
From there, she set out to find the least horrible students to help. It was going to be a hard task, but it wasn't like she had anything better to do in this stupid forest at the asscrack of dawn.
