HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS
While nobody could call her the fastest runner at Haven Academy, she was one of the most enthusiastic, for sure.
In fact, Carmim was arguably the slowest runner at Haven, on account of her short stature and the heavy drum dangling by her side. The two combined made her stride relatively small compared to someone like Ryan, and even the Academy's own Iron Man, Colton Deraine, could take her in a foot race. Hell, Mrs. Long could probably win that one.
But none of that stopped her from waking up at the crack of dawn, throwing on her workout clothes, and hitting the Quad for a nice morning run. She had plenty of stamina, so distance running was one of her favorite ways to wake up at the start of a new day. She bounded through the sidewalks of Haven for a while, before she found her way onto a winding forest trail. She carried on running through there for quite a while, simply breathing in the sweet, woodsy, air, and appreciating the natural beauty around her- birds were singing, crickets chirping, frogs croaking, and the sun was finally starting to peek over the horizon, giving the trees a golden glow.
She stepped out of the wooded trail, back onto the sidewalk, just in time for a mostly unfamiliar figure to dart right past her, coming from the sidewalks she had diverged from to reach her trail.
This girl was quick, whoever she was- it took her no time at all to pass the little drummer, and from there, no time at all to fade quickly out of view. Wow. No clue who she was, but she sure could move! Running like a cheetah. It inspired Carmim, and she picked up her own pace, even though she knew damn well she had no hopes of catching up.
Or, well, so she assumed- she continued running for a few more minutes, before she caught sight of the fountain up ahead, a prominent little spot on the Academy grounds. She usually took her breaks there, mid-run, but this morning, she was pleasantly surprised to find that her usual seat was taken by the girl she'd seen before, who must have had the same idea as her- taking a breather at the fountain.
The little redhead looked her over curiously, but she couldn't place a name to the face. Was she new? She was pretty, with dark hair and what appeared to be cat-like ears. Now she definitely knew she hadn't seen her before- she would have remembered her, for sure. "Hello my friend!" She grinned as she waved at the girl, before coming to a stop a few feet away, a little red in the face, and pausing to catch her breath. "It is a beautiful morning for a run, right? My name is Carmim- I don't t'ink we've met."
A morning run, and a possible new friend? Her day was getting off to a very good start already, it seemed!

Lily began this morning as she began most, with a start minutes before her alarm was meant to go off. Like most mornings, she'd awoken after six hours of sleep with a racing heart, and a feeling of emptiness in the pit of her stomach. Her dreams were often hauntingly empty. Her hands shook slightly as she sat up in her room, and she quietly moved to visit the bathroom to brush her teeth and fill the yellow floral-patterned water bottle Verne had given her. She sleepily started moving toward the door before remembering she was still in a state of total undress. After putting on her running sweats, a black tanktop that was modestly cut, and a pair of black sweatpants with white stripes running down the sides of her legs and a small white flower at the bottom of her left leg. She looked at her shoes and deliberated for a moment whether or not she wanted to wear them, and in the end decided that she would. Had she planned to run through the woods she may have opted to leave them behind, but the lingering lonliness of waking up still haunted her, and she knew from experience that the woods could sometimes be too taxing in such a state. She would be running primarily on concrete today, so the shoes would be useful.
She took a breath as she exited into the early morning air. She had risen before the sun, and the black of the night sky was only just beginning to lighten with the promise of a distantly impending dawn. She counted the stars in the sky as she did her stretches and breathing exercises, and then unceremoniously took off at a light jog. For her anyway, for a slower student it might be more akin to a steady sprint. Still, it was her easy and relaxed pace, and she would maintain it easily while lost in thought.
She often took these morning runs as time for introspection. The quad was often deserted at this hour, so there was never much in the way of stimulus to distract her. This morning she was determined to push away the aching feeling gnawing away at her insides, so she thought of Xanthe and the warmth she'd been allowed to experience as her adoptive daughter. It was Xanthe who steadfastly reminded Lily that there were more warm people in the world than cold, and if she needed help it could be found if she was able to reach out. She'd met a few people, and didn't think she'd have been able to carry a conversation with any of them without Xanthe's words in the back of her mind driving her forward.
Though she tried to focus on the warmth she felt from Xanthe, she could hear the siren song of sorrow from the woods entrance each time she passed it by. There was something tantalizing about giving in to her sadness and letting it take her, and she knew for certain she would succumb if she turned into those woods. Each lap brought her a little closer to turning off and running through the woods, but each lap she managed to keep herself from giving in. However, her will finally cracked, but just as she had moved to turn in, the figure of another small girl coming towards her startled Lily, and she corrected her course in order to continue on her path through the quad. After that, she ran at a hard sprint, until she had left the red headed girl behind by quite a distance. Breathless, though not from overexertion, Lily paused a while by the fountain. It had a wide stone rim around it, and Lily often stole a few minutes on her tenth and final lap to sit by the fountain and clear her mind in meditation. Today, she decided to do so a bit early on her sixth lap.
She climbed into the rim, and sat down on it, crossing her legs and placing her palms on hee knees as she faced the water. She closed her eyes, and began listening to the gentleness of the running water. She took in a breath, steadily sucking in air until her lungs were burning, and then slowly began exhaling. She would continue exhaling until her lungs screamed at her for replenishment, and then fill them painfully slowly as if to spite the organ. She slowly felt the tension running out of her. Again and again she repeated the breaths. At first troublesome thoughts fired rapidly in her mind. Thoughts of worthlessness and of inadequacy. She let them come and go without interference, and by the end her mind was clear. After some time she was nearly ready to resume her run, when an unfamiliar voice called out to her.
She managed not to jump in surprise at the sudden voice, mostly thanks to the interlocked position of her legs. She quickly untangled herself and looked around to confirm that she was indeed the person being referred to as a friend. She then turned to the sound of the voice that had gone on to make it clear that she was indeed calling out to Lily.
She hadn't gotten a good look at her in passing, but she was unquestionably pretty. She had red eyes and red hair. She looked vibrant and full of life, and was advancing on Lily like it was the most natural thing to do in the world.
"I-It is. And e-ehm, no. We haven't." her face was flush with the impending proximity of her classmate. Did she smell? She always showered after her runs and may not have washed her running clothes since the last time she'd used them. She wasn't exactly expecting to run into anyone.
"Lily," she meekly added after a few moments of silence. "I just joined recently. I'm still getting my bearings." she admitted, feeling proud of herself for getting a full sentence out without a nervous stutter.

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS
Fortunately for Lily, Carmim was not at all one to notice a nervous tic like a stutter. Her friendly smile, warm and welcoming, never wavered as she listened patiently for the faunus girl's responses.
Lily. It was a really pretty name, with a decidedly nice ring to it, and brought the little redhead's mind to her work with Holly in the Gardenin Club. Lilies were definitely a kind of flower, as far as she could tell. Which made a lot of sense, why someone would name their daughter that! Flowers were beautiful, and by extension, naming someone after flowers had to be a good plan, by that logic. Her own name stood for a shade of red that her mother had found especially enchanting, after all.
And it seemed her suspicion that Lily was new here was also confirmed. Her smile brightened. "It is very nice to meet you, t'en, Lily!" She took a seat at the small bench opposite Lily's spot on the edge of the fountain. She needed a moment or two to rest, and this was as good a place to do so as any. "I hope you are having a nice time settling in- I remember when I first got here, it was a little scary- so many people! I come from a very small village, so coming to Mistral was a big change for me. But it isn't so bad, now t'at I've been here a while. Most of t'e people I've met here have been very nice so far." She thought back on the first few people she'd met at Haven.
Eva, of course, was a shining beacon of sunshine and rainbows, always smiling and joyful. They had become best friends very quickly, bonding over their mutual favorite soap opera and love of music. Nik was... The opposite of that. He was moody and usually grumpy, but he had a good heart, hidden deep under all of that negativity, and she was determined to draw it out of him some day. Aegle, of course, was her roommate, and well... She was still trying to figure out exactly how she felt about Aegle. Damn feelings, making words hard. And then Argent, and Elena, Theia, Niraya, Ryan, Holly, Nasrin, Jackie, Ruqa... The list went on and on. She'd met plenty of people at Haven so far, and become fast friends with most of them. Surely, Lily was going to do the same, she reasoned, in her head.
A big yawn escaped from her mouth, and she lazily covered it with her hand. "I'm actually a little surprised we haven't met out here before, even if you have only been here for a little while- it isn't often I find somebody else who wakes up t'is early to train." Not that she was usually up quite this early. She usually slept in another hour or two, but four in the morning was just calling out to her today. She drummed her fingers lightly across the top of Storyteller, seated beside her on the bench, leaning into the drum a little as she idly tapped away.
It really was very peaceful outside at this time of day, before the sun had finished poking its head up from behind the world.

Lily, while hardly comfortable as Carmin sat down across from her, but she was closer to something resembling it than she had been when the redhead first approached her. Having untucked her legs, she now worried if her new position was awkward. There was nothing too peculiar about sitting with her feet flat on the ground and her back straight, but she still felt the need to adust, pulling one knee up and resting her head on the knee while her foot was flat on the fountain's rim.
She'd made the change about halfway through Carmim's sympathetic introduction, before crossing her legs once more on the fountain, but in a much more relaxed version of the meditative pose she'd previously .been using.
Though she fiddled with how she was sat for much of the duration of Carmim's speaking, she listened intently. She may not have shown it, but the words were exactly what she had needed to hear that morning. Instead her face showed a confused and cautious girl, trying to respond to the introduction accordingly.
"It is also nice to meet you Carmim." she started stiffly. It was easier to talk than she would have guessed, but she needed to get more used to talking to others. There was something about the ease this girl spoke with that was disarming. Realizing that though made Lily suspicious. Could she be trying to get her to lower her guard for some reason? She tried not to think in those terms, but her suspicion was not easily dismissed. Still, she had to give people the benefit of the doubt. Being paranoid wouldn't help her blend in any.
"Like I said before, still trying to get accustomed to..." she paused, looking out to the school buildings visible from their spot in the quad. "All of this. I never really knew places like this were out there. Even when I did hear of the idea, it turned out a lot different than I thought it'd be."
Apparently, once Lily got started talking, she found it much easier to continue. Without really thinking much about what she was saying or who she was saying it to, she continued.
"I-I mean I've never really been around kids my own age before. Suddenly, they're all over the place. The city is bizzare, the people, the customs, nothing makes sense. Now on top of all that I've finish catching up on an education that other kids have had a fifteen year head start on me... it's a lot to take in." Having no idea what age kids typically start their education, Lily just rambled off the age she was when she began her own education as the amount of years she was behind. She deflated then, her ears drooping as she sagged forward, before she suddenly remembered she was talking to a person and not herself and sprang back up in alarm.
She had an apologetic look in her eye as her mouthed opened and closed a few times. On the third iteration of her mouth opening words finally began spilling out of her mouth of their own accord and so quickly that it was hard to pick out individual syllables. And so with a panicked expression she finished saying what she had originally intended to say.
"I've met a few really nice people and no mean people and tend have been taking different paths every morning so maybe we just haven't bumped into each other and and and my name's Lily."
The young faunus's eyes were glued to her lap. Head bowed, perhaps in shame of the horrible abuse she'd just levied against that sentence. She seemed to finally be all out of words, and was lightly trembling. The edges of her skin began to glow with a soft light as she wrestled with the urge to dash away with all the speed her semblance could lend her. It was a tempting prospect. She could run away from this girl forever and pretend this conversation had never happened, but she managed to contain the desire, and after a few moments the glow of her aura faded and she managed to compose herself somewhat. Unfortunately all that truly means in this case was that she stopped trembling. She couldn't bring herself to lift her eyes and look at a surely shocked Carmim.

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS
Carmim didn't really think too much about Lily's constant fidgeting, and how she kept adjusting the way she was sitting on the edge of the fountain as the little redhead took her seat. Honestly, she wasn't exactly prone to picking up on things like that, especially when she was so distracted by the prospect of making a new friend, as she was. She smiled at Lily as the other girl explained her situation, getting used to all the madness that Mistral could surely be for someone not fully prepared for it. She could relate- it was a far cry from her quaint little village, seemingly worlds away now.
And she could especially relate to her struggles catching up academically.
Carmim wasn't brought up in a school environment, so while she'd heard about what it was like from crackly radio serials and her brother, and later, in her soap operas, it still caught her offguard when she got to Haven, simply because she'd never expected to have to go to school. And now that she was there, sometimes things seemed so hard...
A lot of classes, for instance, took for granted a certain amount of background knowledge on things that she just wasn't taught, like certain applications of Dust, or facts and figures about the Great War- hell, she hadn't even realized that was what it was called until she got to Mistral, as her dad and her uncle just referred to it as 'the war.' Nothing too great about it, either, from the way they described it.
Carmim started to respond to Lily, but the cat faunus was faster, opening her mouth to speak, before closing it again- Carmim did the same, with her, the first few times, before sitting patiently and waiting for her to talk first- if it were anyone but the crimson-clad drummer, it may have been a much more awkward experience, trying to figure out whose turn it was to speak up! At least, that's what it was for Carmim, not knowing about Lily's struggle to find words, regardless of Carmim's attempts to take the wheel. Fortunately, it was Carmim, and if there was one thing she was good at, it was accepting awkward situations with patience and good cheer.
Finally, Lily got her words out, and she got them all out at once- word-vomiting in rapid succession, which the Vacuoan could only just make out entirely. Her eyes widened a little in surprise, but her smile didn't fade.
Wow. Lot to unpack.
She thought about what to say in response to all of that, as she watched Lily with curiosity. The girl was staring down now, but a faint white glow emanated from her body for a moment or two, glowing brighter, until suddenly it faded. Her aura? She'd have to ask about her semblance later- it was probably a really cool one!
"Well t'at's good! Meeting nice people and not t'e mean ones, I mean." She beamed, her tone cheery and relaxed, a far cry from the tense speed of Lily's voice. She was a village girl, after all, and a relaxed tone was her default, even when she too had her moments of babbling excitement.
"I know how you feel, t'ough- everyt'ing is just so big here! I don't know if you've been to t'e cafeteria yet, but if you haven't..." She shuddered for a moment, recalling the once-daily trial involved in dodging, ducking, bobbing, and weaving through the hungry crowd of students for a bite to eat. Fortunately, she'd taken to preparing her own meals, and that was working out much better for her. The cafeteria was a scary hellscape full of nothing but pain and stress. And trauma. Big time trauma.
She shook her head, clearing her mind of such unpleasant thoughts. "Well, let's just say I do not recommend it. It's good to know, t'ough, t'at I'm not t'e only one who found Mistral so strange and scary when I first got here! T'at way, we can figure t'ings out toget'er, yeah?" While Lily may have expected some measure of shock in response to her conversational hiccup-fit, Carmim was still pretty unperturbed by the whole thing- took more than a little awkward rambling to scare her away, after all.
Instead, she leaned forward, stretching her arm as far as she could, so Lily could meet it in the middle for what passed for the little redhead's best attempt at a handshake, teetering at the edge of the bench she was sitting on, a big grin directed at the much more introverted girl sitting before her.
Maybe they hadn't managed to bump into one another before, running the same trails, but she hoped she would start running into her more frequently- anxiety and nerves aside, she seemed nice, and Carmim wanted to get to know her better. Which, of course, led into her next question, wide-eyed with curiosity.
Hopefully her curiosity would leave this particular cat unharmed.
"Oh, so anyways, I don't t'ink I've asked you yet, but what's your semblance? I know, I know, it's a weird question when you're first meeting someone, but I just t'ink t'ey're so neat! Everyone can do so many different special t'ings. What's yours?" A bright smile shone in Lily's direction as Carmim gave her drum a soft pat, remembering that it was next to her on the bench.
Maybe it was just because she always seemed to doubt the usefulness of her own semblance, but everyone else's semblances were a constant point of interest for Carmim.
And Lily's... She could hardly fathom a guess as to what she could do! So exciting!

Lily spent her time listening to Carmim staring down into her lap and feeling silly for being so scared. Every word this girl spoke radiated genuine heartfelt welcoming energy. Her words were warm, and gentle. She spoke like someone who could, perhaps understand what she was going through to some degree, and the yearning for someone who could help her navigate this hellish school landscape sprang up in her chest so suddenly she almost gasped in response. She realized she could feel her eyes getting puffy, and couldn't guess why she felt like crying in that moment. She didn't feel particularly sad. If anything, the young faunus just felt very exposed and embarrassed. She looked up with a hesitant glance at the hand being held out to her, and went to shake it. She had to lean forward on the balls of her feet to reach, and was nervous that her calloused hands would be uncomfortably rough. Handshakes were something she'd only rarely experienced herself, and she had no confidence in her form. She grapsed the girl's hand tight, feeling a strange discomfort in her chest that made her aura light up again as she battled the compulsion to retreat.
Immediately after she'd taken Carm's hand, the gregarious girl began asking about her semblance. She blushed, realizing it had for the second time presented itself thanks to her discomfort. She let go of the girl's hand and pulled back a bit, considering the question.
"I-I could just show you, if you'd like." she felt incredibly nervous as she slowly rose to her feet, pushing herself up to a standing position. As she was speaking, each subtle movement and expression trailed white light with it, until the still mostly motionless girl was shrouded in white light that left her looking less like a person, and more like a human shaped lump of light with cat ears.
"The first ability it grants me is enhanced control of my body.
As she said this, she executed a series of maneuvers to demonstrate what she meant. First a quick back step, assisted by her speed the simple maneuver saw her shift position while keeping the identical stance. Without the trail of light linking her to where she had been one moment ago, it may have appeared as if she had teleported a few paces back. She followed that up with a backflip, the tips her her feet fanning a perfect semicircle of light behind them before gracefully landing one after another on the foot wide rim of the circular fountain. It's waters no longer reflected the light of early morning stars, nor the shattered moon that had yet to fully sink below the horizon. Instead, the waters began shimmering a sparkling white, the glow of her semblance turning the fountain into a dazzling glowing spectacle. After her feet touched ground, the light began to fade from where her hand had retreated from Carmim's, slowly dissolving into small motes of light before winking out entirely.
"The second enhancement my semblance bestows upon me is speed.
To illustrate that, she simply began moving around the fountain. Slowly at first, making sure she could keep her footing on the fountain's rim. Ensuring there were no treacherous footholds or water slicked spots that could cause her to go careening out of control, and memorizing the exact curve of the thankfully large fountain's rim. Once she was sure of her footing, she gradually began speeding up. Each lap increased the brightness around them, until the quad in their immediate vicinity appeared to be illuminated by daylight. Once she found her speed, she continued doing laps until her trail had fully caught up to her current speed. It wasn't quite her max speed, she felt uncomfortable risking an accident by trying to show off, but that didn't stop her from showing off in a way she felt more confident in.
It was something she'd only thought about idly, she'd never trained for it, nor had she practiced it. In fact, the idea had only formed itself in her head recently. At timed intervals, she began jumping high into the air. Narrow jumps that were almost straight vertical jumps. The very slight trajectory left her trailing narrow pointed arches of light behind her, using her legs, she filled in the arches on the way down with solid sheets of white light.
By the time she was done, the fountain had been transformed into a luminous flower that resembled Lily's namesake, petals arrayed in the earliest stages of budding. As she finished her work she hopped out of the light ring onto ground level in front of Carmim. Her eyes were down and her face was kind of red. She hadn't planned that particular flourish. She was afraid to look behind her and see how it had played out, and she felt somewhat guilty for giving in to impulse.
Impulse is the death of discipline. she reminded herself, chiding herself for her childishness even as she secretly hope Carmim liked it.

HAVE YOU SEEN HER? HAVE YOU HEARD? THE WAY SHE MOVES, THERE ARE NO WORDS
Lily stood up, with an offer to demonstrate her semblance, and Carmim was already on the edge of her seat- literally.
It was maybe a little weird that she was so intrigued by other peoples' abilities, but it all made sense to her; why wouldn't she be interested? A person's semblance was often a window into their soul, and beside that point, her own semblance was simple and straightforward- impressive, sure, but not in a deep sort of way. It was big, flashy, loud, and absolutely devastating, but that was all it was. Everyone else she knew, with maybe one exception, they all had much more versatile abilities. It was beautiful to her, seeing them all in motion, in action. A person using his or her semblance was more alive than any human or faunus could ever be, ordinarily- she certainly was.
Nothing was quite as exhilarating as that feeling of her blood pounding through her veins, through her heart, as she took her stance, the winding of her muscles as she drew back her arm, the tremendous, cacophonous thundercrack of her hand striking her drum. Even if it was a force of pure destruction, it held a magic, a certain beauty to it, that captivated her.
That same sense of wonder, childlike and pure, took over her as she witnessed other people and their semblances. What Lily was about to show her... It was one of many things that made Lily special, and had a front row ticket.
"Oh wow... Really!? Yes, yes please, show me, please!!" It was an excitement she couldn't have withheld if she'd tried.
Scarlet eyes followed the trailing white glow as Lily stood up, adjusting herself and preparing for the early morning show.
Enhanced control of her body...? Carmim wasn't quite sure what she meant by that, but she knew that it sure sounded cool. Fortunately, Lily was going to demonstrate for her, so she wouldn't be in the dark for long. And demonstrate she did... "Whoa!" Carmim jumped, and nearly fell out of her seat- if she was on the edge before, she was barely clinging to it now, gripping the bench so tightly her knuckles were white.
She nearly truly did believe it was teleportation- that seemed the only response her eyes would allow her, but fortunately, her ears were far better than her eyes; she heard the footsteps as Lily shuffled backwards, even if she moved so fast, it hardly seemed like her feet touched the ground.
The backflip was a really cool effect too, as was the dazzling light show within the fountain, but she was still processing the insanely fast backstep. It was simple, but definitely showcased the cat faunus's semblance marvelously.
She reached out to touch the fading light, where Lily's hand had just been outstretched to her, only for it to evaporate away, leaving her looking back at Lily, wide-eyed in awe, a huge grin spread across her face. The next part of her already impressive semblance was speed.
She expected it to be cool.
She didn't expect it to be that cool.
It was unreal. She didn't even realize she'd dropped from her seat on the bench onto the ground, that her jaw was dangling limp from the rest of her face, or that time was even still flowing around them- it felt like the whole world had stopped, except for the breathtaking display of artistry happening right before her eyes, a special little show, just for her. It started as a white blur, just lines around the fountain edge, but then shapes started forming, until a flower had formed, in glorious white light, absorbing the fountain into itself.
And then, at last, the artist herself sprung forth from the effervescent sculpture, landing before a starstruck Carmim, red-faced and wearing the slightest hint of pride on her face, though tempered sharply by something else, the redhead couldn't place.
She sat there for what felt like forever, just staring, frozen in sheer amazement. She had seen a lot of incredible powers since she came to Haven, but nothing quite as... pretty, as that. And it was useful too! Versatile, and Lily had so much control over it! It told her that the faunus had likely started practicing her semblance long ago, just as Carmim had, as a child- not many could claim to have such precision with their abilities, and those that could either started young, or learned incredibly fast.
She had a feeling Lily was in both categories.
It was beautiful. So was she, Carmim noted with a hint of a blush- well, she'd been pretty before, but up close, after all of... that! She wasn't quite sure how to react, but she soon noticed that she'd been sitting on the ground for a good bit, before abruptly scrambling to her feet and dusting herself off.
The little redhead glowed at Lily, a bright and ecstatic grin. "T'at...! Was...! Amazing!!! T'at was so cool, I have never seen anyt'ing like it before in my life, my whole life, and it was- I can't- WOW! Lily, you are incredible!!" She let out an excited little squeal, twirling in a circle before gazing back at the fountain, still washed in light.
"T'ank you for showing me t'at! It was so beautiful, so magical... How does it feel, moving so fast? I bet it is very t'rilling, like, like, like, um... I don't know what it would be like! Oh gosh, I am talking so much, but I am just so excited, I am sorry, it's just so cool!"
Smooth, Clover. Geeking out over the semblance of someone she'd barely just met. That's not weird or awkward at all. Never.
