Red had a lot of free time lately, something she never particularly enjoyed. Once everything about her new life was setup, she tried to make the best of it. Part of that was still simple chores, like maintaining her car and keeping the house clean, but she was also making a point of staying up to date on new technology and modern science while she had reliable access to the internet. Unfortunately, that meant spending a lot of time sitting around and reading her scroll, and she was finding that she was starting to get winded more easily and that her muscles were starting to get too accustomed to being sedentary. While she was still in good shape and was still significantly stronger than a desk worker, letting her body deteriorate at all was completely unacceptable. She was supposed to be getting better, faster, and stronger, not worse.
Thus, this afternoon was being dedicated to a bit of solo training. Most of the time she trained with Knight, but there was one area that, if she really wanted to push her limits, she had to do alone and that was agility training. It was the one area she unquestionably better than her partner in, and it took a lot for Red to believe something like that. Knight's full on sprinting pace was more like a brisk jog to her, and she had an easier time getting to difficult to reach areas or crossing gaps than Knight did, even while carrying something heavy (such as Knight herself). She was more than happy to train in this area with Knight, but that was more for her partner's benefit rather than her own. If she really wanted to run she needed to train alone. If she really wanted to improve, if she really wanted to be a better scout, then improving her speed and mobility was important.
Mistral's unique terrain meant focusing on vertical mobility was especially important right now. Vacuo was flat, so it only had niche use there when it came to buildings and certain mountainous areas, but here it looked like being able to quickly maneuver upward was going to be vital. So, she went towards the outskirts of Mistral, far enough to find some clear wilderness that no one lived in. It was a nice area. Lots of cliffs and lots of trees. Perfect for testing her ability to maneuver without touching the ground, while also climbing. By making not touching the ground or climbing normally the challenge, she could get a feel for the place and take a look around so she could set up a proper course for herself later. From there, she could figure out other handicaps, such as carrying extra weight, or time. For now, all she had on her was her scroll and a water bottle, and all she wanted to do was run.
She had forgotten how good it felt to just run. Freerunning wasn't the same as jogging, but if anything it was more invigorating. She couldn't just zone out and go, she had to be paying close attention to the terrain and had to be thinking several steps ahead in order to find a clear path and not fall out of a tree or off a cliff. Not only did it keep her body moving, it kept her mind occupied as well so it couldn't wander to unpleasant places. After a few hours, she had made pretty good progress up the side of the mountain and decided to take a break. There was even a nice rock she could sit on and catch her breath.
Unfortunately, the rock must have been cursed or something because the ground gave way underneath her the moment she stepped near it. Too tired and surprised to react, she wasn't quite able to move in such a way to avoid falling down the hole, and her quick shot with the the grapples in her gloves missed. She toppled down the hole and landed on her ass, unable to rotate herself in time to land gracefully. Her aura prevented any damage, but it was still uncomfortable. After taking a moment to pull her hood out of her face, she took a look around.
Red was no geologist, so she had no idea what kind of cave this was, but it was really big. Really big, and both wide and long. Long enough that even with her night vision she couldn't see either end of it and could barely make it out the walls closest to her. The entire cave was rough from floor to wall to ceiling, and had numerous formations in the floor and ceiling. None of them were especially big, and they were packed in pretty tightly on the ceiling and more sparsely on the floor. Her grapples relied on Van Der Waal's forces rather than a pike or wrap, which meant, while they wouldn't cause any damage to the surface, they required a fairly smooth surface to function. They wouldn't stick to a rough surface like this. The hole she came in was too far towards the center for her to have any hope of her being able to reach it from the wall, and the stalactites were too small and packed together for her to grab. That newly formed hole was the only source of light she could see, so if there were other exits they weren't nearby. She was underground now, so using her semblance to try to go through the wall or floor was risky. So, she was stuck. There wasn't much more to do other than pick a direction and look for another one once her head stopped spinning from the fall.
