[attr=class,cs-main]
Date of Birth: 15 November, 6AV
Species: Wolf Faunus
Romantic Orientation: TBD
Aura Color: Teal
Height: 215cm
Weight: 100kg
Color Naming Rule: Both Raul's first and last names reference wolves, which are associated with grey.
Semblance Name: Bigger Badder Wolf
Rank of Semblance: D
Semblance Type: Physical Boost
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Raul Adalwulf has the Physical Enhancement semblance of Bigger Badder Wolf which allows the wielder to increase his size, Agility and Strength.
Description of Semblance: Raul embraces his instincts and unleashes the bestial characteristics he usually suppresses. Without self-doubt to cloud his judgment, Raul is able to demonstrate his full strength, and shed his usual clumsiness, whilst also enhancing his senses and honing his reflexes. He becomes stronger as he pushes every muscle to the limit, and far more agile as his body moves with the easy grace of a predator. While his semblance is active Raul's bestial characteristics are amplified, his teeth resemble fangs, his nails become claws, he develops a thin layer of gray fur all over his body and his mouth and nose elongate into a blunt lupine muzzle. He also grows noticeably larger and heavier as his formerly lean physique fills out with dense muscle, and he appears more wild overall, with a dim pulsating of red light visible in his blood vessels. While empowered Raul can easily lift up to 210kg, bend or break wood, stone, and soft metals with little effort, and avoid threats that would normally be too fast to react to.
Drawbacks of Semblance: The experience can be overwhelming. The flood of information from his senses in the heat of combat partially dulls Raul's ability to reason, and makes him more prone to impulsive and dangerous behavior. The semblance also relies on aura to function and slowly drains aura when active.
Weapon Name: Waning Fangs
Rank of Weapon(s): E
Description of Weapons(s): A relic of the Faunus War, given to Raul by his parents. The Waning Fangs, thusly named for their resemblance to the crescent moon, are curved trench knives that can unfold into a pair of small caliber revolvers. In their melee configuration they can be used as knuckle dusters and to deliver slashing strikes with their curved blades. In the ranged configuration they can fire small caliber dust rounds at a medium range. The finger ring style grips allow Raul the use of his hands without risking dropping the weapons, and he makes good use of this to grab hold of foes during combat and hold them still while he finishes them off with either a blade or a close range revolver shot.
Name of Non-Combat Ability: Keen Smell
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: F
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Raul has a keen sense of smell, and can identify people and certain substances, (such as blood and other bodily fluids), through the use of scent. In favorable conditions he can also track people short over short distances using his nose, provided he is familiar with their smell.
Name of Non-Combat Ability: Keen Hearing
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: F
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Raul's lupine ears provide enhanced hearing, at a greater range of specificity. He can hear certain sounds outside the normal range of human hearing, and can track sources of sound more precisely by adjusting the angle of his ears.
Name of Combat Ability: Fur Missile (Speed)
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Being the kind of hunter who fights primarily with knives means closing the distance is a priority. Raul is a decent sprinter. Decent enough that you almost forget he can barely walk across the living room without stubbing six toes and knocking over an entire bookcase.
Name of Combat Ability: Combat Pragmatist (Martial Arts)
Rank of Combat Ability: D
Description of Combat Ability: When called to action, Raul does everything possible to end the fight quickly. He exploits enemy weakness while making the most of his strengths, and is not above fighting dirty should the situation call for it. Raul's style is messy and inelegant, often devolving into a tangle of limbs, grappling, and desperate struggling over weapons. Raul has recently learned to make the most of the overwhelming strength his semblance grants him, and has taken to throwing objects and even enemies to inflict further injury, or even using them as improvised weapons to bludgeon foes with.
Primary Drive: Raul is driven almost entirely by a desire to form emotional bonds with others. Separated painfully from his family for reasons beyond his understanding, Raul is in search of those who he can trust and seek guidance from. Simply put, he wants to make friends.
Fears: Raul has a paralyzing fear of thunderstorms.
Slavery, Raul has been terrified of being enslaved ever since discovering and subsequently destroying an encampment of slavers.
Himself, Raul fears his own brute might, and the way he sometimes behaves when in the grips of his semblance. It disturbs him how easily he can become a force of destruction, and his is often skeptical of those who bid him to do so.
Style of Self-Expression: Raul communicates primarily with physical gestures, and non-verbal cues. The posture of his ears and the movement of his tail often betray his emotions. He prefers simple words and easy to grasp concepts, and will often grow frustrated when trying to convey a complex thought or emotion.
Most Important Thing:
"Life is precious..." Raul considers every life to be intrinsically valuable, and view the preservation of life as the solitary ideal to which to aspire.
"... it is our duty to oppose those that believe the opposite." Raul cannot tolerate cruelty, or injustice, and it drives him wild when he encounters it.
Love even your enemy. Raul regrets having to inflict pain on others, even his enemies.
Well before Raul was born, the story of his parents was a thing pulled straight from the pages of romantic fiction. The pair first met in the forests of Eastern Mistral. Origonally from the coastal villages of Vale prior to the Mistral invasion, the pair had been part of the expeditionary guerilla force sent into Mistral in the last push of the war. The force had set up in an abandoned town called Toll.
Ingolf was wounded in a botched raid and forced to undergo a lengthy recovery in the camp's makeshift field hospital. It was there that he met a nurse by the name of Ylva, an arctic fox faunus. Ingolf would later claim that he fell in love with her immediately. Ylva cared for Ignolf as he mended from his injuries, but was fully ignorant of his attachment to her. She did not ever suspect his interest when she caught the scruffy black wolf hanging about the hospital, and making excuses that stretched credulity to be perpetually nearby. Cut off from the war effort as a whole, and reliant on whatever supplies could be looted or stolen from the enemy, Ylva was simply happy for a friendly and helpful face. It did not take long for a proper love to blossom between the two, taking root even in the wartorn earth.
When the war came to a close, and with Vale as the victors, the pair had to decide how to proceed with their lives. Between the prejudice between human and faunus which was destined to soon come to a head, and their former homes and communities having been the first sites for battle of the Great War, there was nothing left for them to return to in Vale. Partially disillusioned by the ruling class that had sent them to die on foreign soil with little if any support while the war was decided on the other side of the planet, the question of loyalty was a moot one. Thus Ingolf and Ylva, now officially united in legal union as man and wife, elected to remain in Mistral, and begin the long arduous process of rebuilding Toll.
In the fall of 6AV the pair had a son, a wolf like his father, and baring a grey and black pelt that was a combination of that of his parents. They named him Raul. Raul lived up to his name, which meant "Wise Wolf" in the language of Ingolf's ancestors, as he was a quiet and contemplative child who showed a great love and fascination for nature. He would spend many hours every day scouring the woods for insects or small animals to observe and play with, or gazing with wonder upon the sunrises or summer storms that would roll into their little valley, though with a notable exception for when it thundered, a phobia from which he never truly grew out of.
Raul's parents did their best to pass on the lessons of their lives to their son. Ingolf, having transitioned to a member of the town militia in retirement from the military, taught his son about the basics of combat and how to think tactically. He treasured these lessons with his father, and though he cared very little for the actual skills he was developing, Raul was driven to make his father proud and applied himself with diligence to the old wolf's lessons. Meanwhile Ylva taught her son how to care for himself and others, passing on skills ranging from basic first aid, to naturecraft and cooking. Already enamored by nature, the lessons served to be as much a bond between mother and son, as the combat lessons were between Raul and his father.
Raul was in his early teens when racial tensions met a head and the Faunus war broke out across Remnant. He'd never given much thought to how he was treated by humans, preferring instead the company of animals and the wilderness, but with suspicion of the beast folk now a t a fever pitch, it was impossible to ignore how his human neighbors now regarded him and his family with complete disdain. Life in their little village was growing increasingly hostile, and when an effigy of hides and tinder was left to burn on the their doorstep one night, Ingolf and Ylva agreed that their son, who despite being kind hearted had grown into a youth of such fearsome aspect that the local townsfolk actively hated him, was no longer safe in Toll. Raul's parents were still earning a pension from the ruler of Vale for their military service, and they put every penny of it towards Raul's tuition at the academy of Sanctum.
Raul was confused by the choice, having not truly grasped the danger he was in around Toll, and one night before his departure, he asked his mother why he was being sent away to learn to fight. Ylva, who had hoped to spare her son the strife she'd experienced during the Great War, simply gave Raul the advice that would come to define his attitudes towards violence,
"Everything has as much a right to live as you do. That can mean either that life is precious and it is the utmost crime to deprive someone of it, or that no one has any especial right to exist. It is up to us to choose which of those we believe. I believe that life is precious, and can tell I have raised you to believe the same, but that also means it is our duty to oppose those that believe the opposite. I have fought my war. I hoped it would be the last, but now the next has arrived and it is your turn. Go and become strong, because only then will you have the means to protect the lives you hold dear."
With those words emblazoned upon his mind, Raul left for Sanctum and poured himself into his studies as a potential huntsman. Despite having a temperament that was at best ill-suited for the rigors of combat, Raul only grew larger and more fearsome in his appearance, until by the time of his graduation he was a hulking and shaggy creature that towered over his classmates like a mute and mossy monolith. He performed averagely in both academic and athletic subjects, and never really developed any strong friendships due to his unsettling appearance, which was bestial even by the standards of the faunus, but otherwise was regarded as a perfectly adequate candidate for Haven, even before The Fall, one year prior to his completion of the program.
In the interim, Raul's family were displaced entirely from their home in Toll, driven out by a combination of racial prejudice and the financial strain of supporting an absent son. They moved to Argus, where Ylva found work at the hospital, and Ingolf at one of the city's many factories. Then, in the year prior to when Raul would have completed his training and been able to return to a home that no longer existed, Haven Academy spearheaded a mission to erect a comm array in the city. Raul who had been uncertain of what his plans were going to be once he finished at Sanctum, was inspired by the heroic service of the Haven students, and applied immediately upon graduation.
Raul's time at Sanctum gave him the necessary skills to come through the entrance exam with no serious issue, and he gained something of a reputation among other inductees, from those who took note of his strange bestial appearance, and later from those who would swear that he actually bit a beowolf when a pack fell upon their class. Raul refused to comment on what may or may not have transpired, and simply said he only did what was needed to protect himself and his classmates.
Unlike his performance in the academic and combat reviews, which were average and slightly above average respectively, the psychological survey yielded very interesting results. In terms of emphatic response, Raul had almost a perfect score, placing him in the 90th percentile for applicants, and well above the average level of empathy demonstrated by those that would typically apply to a combat academy. He had strong emotional reactions to even the fictional scenarios presented during the review, and though his answers were in line with typical responses, his emotional responses indicated that he was highly reluctant when it came to combat or the use of potentially lethal force, even in the question of the Grimm. When in light of this disparity, he was asked why he wanted to be a huntsman Raul answered simply, "Because life is precious."
