Evangeline Lys de Verre
" Follow the melody of life!"
Age 18 Gender Female Faction Haven Academy Tier Beginner Face Claim Rin Kagamine - Vocaloid OOC Name WingsofRequiem/Wingsu |
Character Traits
Date of Birth: 4th April, 7 AV
Species: Human
Hometown: Kingdom of Atlas
Romantic Orientation: Heterosexual
Hair Color/Style: Pale Gold, almost like strands of sunlight. It is usually kept short in a messy sort of bob, reaching down to the base of her neck, with left parted bangs.
Eye Color: Originally pale blue, Evangeline was rendered blind and given surgery with bio-mechanical Atlas tech to give her sight back. Currently, although it usually stays pale blue, her irises occasionally have visual glitches that cause it to rapidly change colors, making her eyes literally sparkle with every hue simultaneously at times.
Aura Color: Hues of Gold, similar to sunlight.
Height: 152 cm / 5 ft 0 inches
Weight: 43 kg / 95 lbs
Appearance: The first impression anyone gets when seeing Evangeline is that of the Sun. Her bright hair and usual bright smiles reinforce this strongly, as she is almost always smiling. She has prominent, round eyes, a soft feminine facial structure, a small nose with an upturned tip and subtly full lips. Her eyes are usually a startling shade of glacier blue, but as mentioned above, occasionally glitch, causing every tiny pigment cell to constantly change color at times, so her irises can literally resemble a rapidly exploding rainbow.
Evangeline is quite small and petite, the barest hourglass shape to her otherwise almost childish figure. This, combined with her fragile frame, flawless looking porcelain skin and facial features, she very much resembles a living doll. When she is not smiling brightly, she is actually somewhat disconcerting for many to look at, as she resembles a grown woman and a young teenager at the same time, almost like an optical illusion.
Due to her previous injuries, a lot of things in Evangeline's body has been replaced by synthetic parts. Visually, this mainly includes her left arm, left shoulder and left leg. Although these parts of her body look about as normal and human as the rest of her, there are faint black lines on the joints, visible to someone paying close attention. Every finger joint, her wrist, elbow and shoulder have these lines, as well as her left knee, thigh, ankle and toes. This also reinforces the creepy doll-like appearance of her.
Her clothing style is about as feminine as the rest of her. She loves bright colors and skirts, and will very often wear them in casual settings, and even in battle. The fact that she tends to wear skirts and frocks emphasizes the youthful doll appearance.
Personality:
Evangeline is the exact definition of boundless optimism, to the point of being cloyingly sweet. She is somewhat aloof and oblivious, almost ignorant at times, to anything that might be negative. She almost always has a serene sort of expression whenever she is not smiling, and she smiles a lot. She is cheerful, bright and always tries to help whenever she thinks someone or something needs help. Even if she has absolutely no idea how to help with the subject involved, she will still try. She has a strong sense of empathy and desire to ease other's pain, and although she can be oblivious when someone is being negative to her, such as insulting her or bullying her, she can be very sympathetic and understanding of someone else's pain and problems. She is somewhat self-sacrificing in that regard, and will frequently take the time out of her day or her work so she can be of assistance to someone who really needs it.
She is very expressive and emotional, never shy to laugh or exhibit her bright personality. She rarely cries due to emotional stress for herself, although it is common for her to tear up for various minor reasons. She could tear up because she stubbed her toes, she could start crying because a dog she saw was far too cute, she could even start bawling if she messes something up, which happens a lot. She can be clumsy at times and messes up things a lot, so it isn't uncommon for someone to see her smiling one second, crying out loud the next second and then turning back to happy smiles within the next. One could say she was somewhat neurotic, but its more related to the fact that she is very expressive and believes that emotions and thoughts should not be suppressed or hidden. Most of the tears she sheds are very open tears and can be stopped with ease, with a simple fix or change of topic. However, the times she actually cries with sorrow are usually when it's related with someone else's pain or sorrow. During those times, her cries are a lot more subdued and harder to stop.
Aside from that, she is also a very inquisitive and curious person. When someone dangles something of interest to her, she will constantly attempt to learn about it. It isn't very hard to get her attention and curiousity. She is almost like a cat in that regard. She isn't the smartest person, however, and tends to say silly things or stumble over words when trying to explain things. As mentioned, she can be clumsy, and along with that, smart thoughts tend to escape her notice. She is easily distracted to a degree, and can appear to be a person who is very often lost and somewhat empty-headed.
Above all else, Evangeline loves music. Her passion for music is unmatched and she can gush for hours and hours about it. She loves playing music, loves hearing music, loves singing and loves to be sung to. She doesn't care if someone tries to play or sing for the first time, she still appreciates and loves it. In that way, Evangeline can be considered somewhat... special. She claims to see lines of music, hear hidden melodies in the breaths of those around her, as if life itself is one great composition, and she can see the hidden notes floating about. In that strange, intangible way, Evangeline can impart wisdom and see things that most others would often miss. She can very often notice someone's emotional state by paying attention, and her guesses about a person's mindset are usually close to the truth. But even when faced with someone she knows is a bad person, she constantly tries to find redeeming factors about them and will constantly try to help them see a brighter path.
All in all, Evangeline appears as a very innocent, aloof, clumsy and cheerful girl who is extremely expressive and open with her emotions, has a passion for music of all kinds and views the world around her in a somewhat strange and unorthodox way.

Combat & Inventory
Mélodie de l'âme
Rank of Semblance: E
Semblance Type: Manipulator
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Mélodie de l'âme is a manipulation semblance that manifests in music, manipulating aura into the sound waves to either heal or harm those who hear it.
Description of Semblance: Melodie de l’ame is a semblance which involves the manipulation of sound waves in the air, only when generated by an instrument wielding by Evangeline. The sound waves she creates is manipulated by her semblance, instilling additional effects onto them, depending on how she plays a song, it can have one of two effects.
Mechanically, the semblance does only two things. Either it causes an Aura Regeneration effect, or a Nausea effect.
Differentiating between the effects is very simple and upto Evangeline. She can decide if her music is meant to heal or harm, and the way to do it is the tune. If she plays a song with the right notes and keys, it heals. If she intentionally plays it discordantly or offtone, it harms.
The Regeneration effect provides a boost to a person's aura vitality. This means that a person under the effect of the Regeneration will begin to heal from damage they sustained to their aura. The healing is negligible when the effect starts, and only is noticeable after a while (1 turn).
The Nausea effect causes a Nausea debuff. It causes a sensation of vertigo for as long as the person is affected by the music, and the debuff continues another turn after that, lowering the target's mobility. The nausea effect is noticeable from the first turn it starts.
While the music can be heard for very, very long distances depending on the acoustics and volume, the aura instilled into the music dissipates with range, effectively limiting the range of the semblance’s effects, while also meaning that a person outside the range can simply enjoy the music without suffering from either effect. Currently, the range of effect is E Rank, about the length of a telephone pole (10-12m).
Because Grimm possess no aura, the Regeneration part of this semblance does not affect them at all.
The Manipulation benefit that Evangeline has is Immunity to her own Semblance, meaning she is not affected by either the Regeneration nor the Disorientation.
Evangeline can also just play music normally, without instilling the effect into her music.
Drawbacks of Semblance: Unable to be used without a musical instrument of some kind.
Unable to be used if Evangeline doesn’t know how to play the musical instrument.
The healing is done slowly over time, and thus, not very effective at saving someone from a serious injury, more so aimed at allowing a person to keep battling longer by healing minor wounds and aura damage over time.
Less effective (but not completely) on opponents who are deaf or have their hearing blocked. As the sound is basically vibrations in the air, blocking one's ability to hear does not nullify the sound waves, and effect contained, still hitting them. However, the power of the effect is far diminished, 2 Ranks lower than the semblance rank at a minimum cap of F.
Using the Semblance on Lis Fleurrisant, which is the primary way to use it, has a risk of the strings snapping in the intensity of battle. As playing the music with the semblance active causes a lot of strain on the string, causing them to heat up. If played consecutively for longer than 3 turns, the strain is too much and the strings snap. This drawback is only during battle, as the fast pace and hectic nature of battle means that Evangeline can't fully focus on spreading the strain out on the strings to avoid this. On a regular instrument, this is reduced to a single turn before the strings snap in combat. The Grace period to allow the strings to cool off from the stress in combat is a single turn if all 3 turns were used.
Requires focus to use. If the song isn’t properly played due to distraction, such as in active combat (when Evangeline is engaged directly, not if she is in a general combat situation), neither effect can take hold.
The healing effect takes a while to ramp up. This also ties in with the lack of focus drawback, meaning if Evangeline is kept from properly playing, she can’t utilize her semblance for healing.
Can affect both friends and foe with undesirable effects, such as harming allies or healing opponents. Grimm are exempt from the Regeneration, as they lack Aura. But all Humans and Faunus, regardless of affiliation, can be subject to both.
While unseen, it is still physical sound waves travelling through air. Therefore, it is useless in a vacuum, hindered by liquid obstacles and bounces off of solid obstacles, which can either hinder or emphasis the effects. A small echoing room would emphasize the effects while someone outside of the closed room would have diminished or no effects.
Directly saps from Evangeline’s overall aura. Meaning overusing this can cause her protective aura to diminish. Cannot be used without aura.
Lis Fleurissant
Rank of Weapon(s): F
Description of Weapons(s): Lis Fleurissant, or Blooming Lilies, is an ornately designed Violin in it's usual state. It is white and gold primarily, made of flexible, light metal alloys and inlaid Gold. Its main coloration is platinum white, glossy, almost like marble. Throughout its body, there are ornate golden engravings, which are laid out with actual gold within the paint and engravings, giving it an brilliant shine that both compliments and contrasts with the glossy shine of the white parts. The Strings very expensive, made of a special aura-fused metallic string to make them durable and pliant. They can still regularly snap, but the advantage of this expensive material is that it can be healed in the same way a person can be, by infusing aura into it, allowing the snapped strings to be made whole again. It's length is 37 centimeters, a very standard size for a Violin, although it weighs slightly heavier than an average violin. The bow of the violin, used for actually playing music, resembles a regular violin bow, except it is also made of the same metal as the violin, and white in coloration. The bow is reinforced along the spine, allowing it to be used as a make-shift melee weapon to administer light, precise blunt impacts, or to deflect incoming melee attacks.
There is a switch on the bottom of the violin, where the body meets the neck, that can be flicked, requiring a moderate amount of pressure so it can't be flicked by mistake. When flicked, the violin undergoes a simple transformation, consisting of the body opening up with the fulcrum being at the base of the Violin. Both sides of the Violin hinge outwards and reposition themselves along the various joints they are made of, until the Violin essentially turns into a light crossbow. This transformation very much resembles a flower opening up in a bloom, thus the name. The switch that was used to turn it into a crossbow goes in and reveals a longer switch, which is used as the trigger mechanism for the crossbow when pulled. When pushed with sufficient force, it reverts the transformation back to a Violin and brings out the original small switch.
Although small for a crossbow, only 37 centimeters long and a 43 centimeter bow-span, the crossbow can fire with some mean force, thanks to the bowstring being a similar composite that the violin's musical strings are made from, allowing it a lot of tensile strength despite the size. It's small size means it can be used with one hand, although two hands are still preferable for accuracy. The standard bolts fired from Lis Fleurrisant are standard lightweight crossbow bolts, not great at penetrating armor but very good range and accuracy. Lis Fleurrisant has a clever mechanism of firing which causes the bowstring to reset itself a second after releasing a bolt, although another bolt must be manually placed. The firing of Lis Fleurissant is completely silent, except for a quiet "snk" sound upon firing, which makes it a useful stealth weapon, aside from the glaring fact that it's also a violin.
The Violin's strings and spine stay intact through the transformation, and the weapon can still be used to play music in it's crossbow form, albeit the difference in holding it and positioning of arms and bows is so different in crossbow form than regular violin form that most other violin-players cannot play it well in that form, but Evangeline has mastered it so she can play it perfectly in either form.
Evangeline carries a maximum of 40 bolts at a time for combat, the bolt-bags located at her waist.

Name of Non-Combat Ability: Empath
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: F
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Evangeline has a higher than average ability to gauge out the feelings and emotional state of others around her just by observing them or touching them.
Name of Non-Combat Ability: Basic First Aid knowledge
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: F
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Evangeline has learned about fixing and healing physical wounds during her time in Haven Academy. She is better than the average joe at fixing wounds and helping injured folks outside of combat situations, when possessing the right medical supplies.
Combat Abilities
Name of Combat Ability: Marksmanship [Crossbow]
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Although she doesn't like direct combat, Evangeline has above-average accuracy and training with weapons that identify as crossbows, including her own weapon.
Name of Combat Ability: Skittish Combatant [Agility]
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Evangeline is not a solid, weighty fighter. She is more of a rabbit than a bear, and thus, she is above average at dodging out of the way of incoming attacks, whether they be melee or ranged. This comes in handy whenever she is engaged in ranged combat, or against a melee combatant.
Name of Combat Ability: Skittish Combatant [Speed]
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Evangeline is not a solid, weighty fighter. She is more of a rabbit than a bear, and thus, she is better at crossing or creating distance than the average person, with a fast pace of running. This comes in handy whenever she needs to shift position to make a ranged attack from a different direction, or if she needs to create distance from a slower, melee opponent.
Name of Combat Ability: Sonic Bolt
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Evangeline has added an arsenal of bolts to her quiver which contain a blunt arrowhead and a concentrated charge mixture of Air and Gravity dust. It can be activated by either impact, or by sound. When it is fired from the quiver, the blunt arrowhead must impact a solid surface to activate, or Evangeline can preemptively activate it by playing a specific high pitched note on her violin. When it activates through either criteria, the dust inside will activate and the arrowhead will explode, releasing a powerful sonic blast in a spherical expansion.
Mechanically, this bolt simply deals concussive damage based on its rank to those in the radius, also based on rank (currently 5-7 meters, size of a small room). The damage is lowered by 1 rank against targets with protection against sounds.
Currently Evangeline's quiver can carry a maximum of two usable Sonic Bolts per combat/thread.

Biography
History
Evangeline was born to Antoine and Fiona Lys de Verre, a married couple of nobility, in the Kingdom of Atlas. Part of the higher echelon, as well as the only child, Evangeline was pampered and spoiled by her parents, who were both skilled and well-known musicians and had managed their good wealth through it. From birth, Evangeline had a kind of frailty to her, falling sick easily and suffering worse than most people. Therefore, her parents were extremely protective of her, and she lived a mostly sheltered life indoors, kept company by her parents and her personal maid / nanny / teacher, Miss Wilkins.
Despite that, she had always maintained a very cheerful personality, easy to laugh and smile, always curious and always interested in learning new things. Her parents loved her deeply, and many other nobles who had friendship with her parents also doted on her. She was an adorable child, and no one could ever deny that. However, as the saying goes, curiousity can definitely be fatal.
Evangeline was 7 years old, and she was in her room doing her homework like a good little child. Her teacher, Miss Wilkins, had stepped out of the room for a moment, talking with another maid of the household. Evangeline was trying to figure out the answer to a certain difficult question when she heard a lovely sound. She found a tropical bird sitting at her open window, trilling in a musical way. She was instantly awed by the beautiful plumage of such a bird, extremely unusual for it to be around Atlas like this. As a child does, she instantly tried to go to the bird, running over in her haste. The bird, as most animals do, took wing when it saw Evangeline approaching, but Evangeline was running blind towards the bird, too caught up in the colors of its feather as she ran and tried to touch it even once. The window was wide open, her room was on the third floor, and she reached too far as the bird flew off.
A normal person wouldn't have suffered such serious injuries from a fall from the third floor. But Evangeline was a child, and already fragile to begin with. She had fallen, and landed on her left side, onto the solid stone path. Her left arm and left leg suffered bad fractures and open wounds, but nothing too serious. She was taken to the hospital and kept under observation as she recovered, and it soon turned out that the fracture wasn't the bad thing. Because of her weaker than average immune system, an infection was setting in. Doctors tried to cull it, but it was running rampant, unaffected by the antibiotics they were giving her in an effort to stave the infection. This wasn't a normal infection. It was something that had been laying dormant in her from birth, a wasting kind of sickness, and now that her body was at its most vulnerable, it had attacked. After a hard fought battle lasting over a few months, they had no choice but to concede the battle to the infection, to win the war. They amputated her left arm and leg, where the infection had been the worst, the former at the shoulder and the latter halfway down the thigh. It was a good thing that Antoine and Fiona both had a lot of wealth thanks to their illustrious career, as what followed was an expensive procedure.
But it saved her life. They augmented several of her internal organs, which had been damaged by the infection, with synthetics. This included her eyes, as the infection had eaten away at her cornea, iris and lens. She was given advanced synthetic prosthetics to replace her lost arm and leg, an almost perfect mimicry of human life through the advanced tech that Atlas possessed. They merged her to it through surgery, and replaced it as she grew. However, despite them replacing it every now and then, it still hampered her growth, making her look much younger than she was as she grew. They directly join to her nerves, allowing her to feel with them, including things like temperature and pain, placed within a layer of artificial skin, which also hides the metallic nature of it. But they are still made of advanced metal, and while still vulnerable to damage, are somewhat more resistant. The feelings of pain and temperature are only skin-deep, so while she can feel pain from it being scraped, she feels no pain from the internals of the machine-work being damage. The only visual differences from an actual arm are faint black lines around all the joints, and plastic fingernails which do not grow.
Still, therapy to have her back on her feet and being able to adjust to the limbs took years. It took 6 years actually, and by the time she could finally walk and act normally, she was already 12. However, even despite the cruel fate that had befallen her, Evangeline's smile never dimmed. Her hope continued to burn and shine brightly, and she continued to laugh and smile throughout her recovery. Once she was home, she returned to her previous life of studying and learning how to be a lady, her favourite of which was learning the violin. When she was 16, her semblance manifested, delighting her although worrying her parents. Following that, she decided she would want to be a Huntsman, to help make the world a better place, and despite her parents worrying about her safety, she managed to talk them into letting her live her life that she had fought hard for. They obliged, and as a gift for her enrollment into Atlas Academy, and her 17th birthday, gifted her with her signature weapon, Lis Fleurissant, made by one of the best weapon creators in Atlas. All that college savings really did come in handy.
She spent a year in Atlas Academy, proving to be less-than-average combatant, but a very good support medic and great classmate and student. However, after a year, Evangeline heard about Mistrals' Haven academy, as well as the tragedy that had befallen Mistral. Her desire to help make the world a better place flared up then, and she underwent a full transfer, with some persuading of the Atlas staff as well as her parents. Thus, she joined Haven Academy, having to start from scratch despite the year she spent in Atlas, with hope in her heart as she saw the state of disarray that Mistral was in. She promised herself that she would do everything she could to bring joy and safety to people's lives.
She overcame her crux. She would help everyone else do so as well!
