Lucian Van Sange
"Give that huntsman a cannon. Huntsmen love cannons."
Age 37 Gender Male Faction Haven Academy Faculty Tier Senior Face Claim Alucard from Hellsing Franchise OOC Name WingsofRequiem/Wingsu |
Character Traits
Date of Birth: 12 BV
Species: Human
Hometown: Vacuo
Romantic Orientation: Indescribable
Hair Color/Style: Hair that is so black it seems to almost eat up light that falls on it, falling in a choppy fashion down to the base of his neck.
Eye Color: Vivid Red
Aura Color: Dark red
Height: 191 cm / 6’3”
Weight: 83 kg / 185 lbs
Courses Taught: Social Chemistry: Your classmates are people too | Marksmanship Training: How to not miss | Psychology: Sanity for Dummies
Appearance: Lucian van Sange is your textbook definition of Tall, Dark and Mysterious. He is a tall, almost lanky man with a very slender body profile, including slender limbs with long, dextrous fingers. He almost looks anorexic with how thin he is. He is exceptionally pale, almost alabaster in terms of skin coloration, which puts a stark contrast with his almost unnaturally dark hair.
One of Lucian’s key visual characteristics is that he always wears sunglasses, even indoors and at night. He can be seen almost always wearing a pair of circular orange shades that are fully reflective, hiding his eyes. He also almost always wears the same wardrobe consisting of a long red duster with a red floppy fedora with red tie, black suit, waistcoat and pants and a white shirt. He is usually also always seen in possession of a ukelele, slung over his back, and practically carries it everywhere with him. His weapon, Der Freischütz, is also usually seen slung across his back, or being used very disrespectfully as a cane or walking stick.
It is also very common to find him in the process of eating some kind of snack, whether it be potato chips or candy, etc. He is almost always engaging in some form of snack based indulgence, even in the middle of classes.
Personality: Lucian can be described in many ways in terms of personality. One of the most prominent ways to describe him would be neurotic. Lucian seems to lack any form of empathy, and always possesses an eccentric personality. He is extremely sarcastic and deflects almost constantly with sardonic humor. He takes absolutely nothing seriously, and is rarely, if ever, concerned over most things. He is narcissistic, albeit he does not really possess an ego, rather just an impossibly high level of self-indulgence and self-worship. Thus, he can also be exceptionally selfish without even realizing it, and can act quite childish at times.
He constantly exudes an air of cockiness, and will never miss a chance to blow his own trumpet. He can also be exceptionally inappropriate towards everyone and everything, and has been known to attempt to flirt with inanimate objects. He can be infuriating to deal with as he takes nothing seriously, but he still demands a modicum of respect because, despite his… unusual way of approaching things, Lucian is actually a surprisingly intelligent person. He has a very thorough understanding of how the mind works and human nature in general, and can impart very insightful wisdom if one was prepared to wade through the hundreds of crude jokes he would make around that nugget. He is a man who doesn’t really care about, well, anything. But the one thing he does put value in is loyalty, and thus, despite his sociopathic bipolar tendencies, he is loyal to people he considers as his own, and holds his word to anyone he has given it to, even grudgingly at times.
His strange dissassociative way of viewing the world is actually beneficial in a way for the job he does; It allows him to be completely, and utterly unbiased towards everyone, be they man, woman or object. It lets him notice things that other people (read; normal people) would not notice, and can provide a very different point of view. That being said, however, he is still a very difficult person to like unless someone understands that his carefree, mock-everything attitude is simply his own way of coping with life and that he usually, if ever, has no ulterior motives and voices any and all intents he has with full disclosure.

Combat & Inventory
Oculus
Semblance Type: Passive
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Oculus is a passive semblance that allows Lucian to be able to visually sense any living being that possesses an aura through all obstacles within his area of infuence.
Description of Semblance: Oculus is a very straight forward passive semblance that is constantly active. In it’s general state, Lucian can simply detect any and all living creatures within range of his semblance through sight. The targets will show up outlined in the color of their aura, with intricate pathways running through their body in the same color similar to the circulatory system. This is visible even through usual visual obstacles, such as walls, foliage, darkness, blinding light, smoke, dust and even most invisibilities. While normally, it is toned down so targets only have a dim glow, focusing on the semblance allows the glow to brighten and intensify, allowing Lucian to view targets with much greater ease. This does not replace his actual sight, Lucian is capable of seeing the world completely normally, but simply with the added effects.
Drawbacks of Semblance:
Cannot detect Grimm or inanimate objects, or others that do not possess aura.
Can be counteracted via any invisibility or cloaking ability that hides Aura.
Relies on Lucians’ Cone of Sight, so all the drawbacks of sight EXCEPT obstacles.
Limited by Semblance range rather than sight range.
Unless Lucian has memorized the specific color of an aura, can be next to impossible to identify a target through obstacles.
Can be difficult to distinguish in a brightly lit environment (counteracted by sunglasses).
Der Freischütz
Description of Weapons(s): Der Freischütz is an absurdly long rifle measuring 182 cm, or 6 feet, almost as tall as Lucian himself, resembling a traditional bolt action hunting rifle, although in function it acts more like an high penetration sniper rifle. Most of it’s length is a solid black barrel which leads onto an elaborately emboosed gold receiver, which transitions into a dark red wooden stock with gold trims. The receiver itself is much longer than a traditional receiver, and this is for the ammunition. Der Freischütz can hold a single round at a time, and each round is a specially handcrafted bullet resembling a .50 caliber, albeit colored red.
Pulling the trigger causes the weapon to fire the projectile at exceptional speeds, meant to travel long distances at high speeds, and penetrate through very thick obstacles without losing lethality. Despite the power of each shot, the bullets themselves rarely have much of an explosive impact on the hit targets. Rather, it usually passes through physical bodies so cleanly that it is barely noticed at the moment of impact. The recoil is very high on the weapon itself, however, and combined with it’s bolt action single round design, means its fire rate is low.
The barrel of the weapon can be detached from the receiver, allowing Lucian to use the barrel as a cane for melee combat, and the rest of the weapon as a short-ranged gun.

Biography
History
Lucian Van Sange was a famous, or rather, infamous huntsman in his prime. He had a dreadful reputation as being one of the most effective, albeit ruthless, marksmen in the wilderness of Vacuo. Not much is known about the man’s past other than the fact that he grew up in a nomadic setting in Vacuo, and later joined a bandit organization and became the leader of the group through very unsettling means at a young age, before ‘growing bored’ of it and switching to become a bounty hunter for hire, which was simply a legal way of calling him a hitman.
High profile human criminals, or Dangerous Grimm, Lucian hunted both and took absolute delight in it. He was especially effective at hunting down human targets, as he had accrued a severely effective understanding of the human psyche, much of which was gained through, again, unsettling means. There was something fundamentally wrong with him ever since his youth and he seemed to be practically a psychopath with how casually he treated everything. However, his record wasn’t the cleanest in the book as he had caused some collateral damage in his work. Despite that, whenever a bounty hunter was needed for a particularly difficult task, Lucian was the man for the job, and thus, grudgingly, a trusted associate of the Huntsmen Guilds around the four nations. And he didn't really go out of his way to hurt innocents and actually did try to save them when possible; he was just what a lot of Huntsmen would call reckless with how he planned things. Over time, however, it was evident that he actually wasn't a heartless hitman for hire, and that he did care about people other than himself in his jobs. That didn't stop him from doing everything by himself however, not because there weren't anyone willing to work with him, but rather because he liked working alone. Alas, such work carries its own risks. Because it was a less honorable position than a Huntsman, Lucian was mostly reviled and looked down upon by actual huntsmen. Most huntsmen that had met or knew of Lucian during his working days hold negative opinions on him, not helped by the fact that he never took anything seriously and seemed borderline disrespectful of the work that a lot of Huntsmen took pride in.
He branched out from Vacuo, becoming more a roaming Mercenary, being contracted by people from around the four continents to help clean up the rabble of bandits and thieves and Grimm. In his own chaotic way, Lucian was doing good. He just wasn't a very nice guy to talk to. Despite that, a lot of people liked him because of how efficient he was at his work, and he was also willing to take jobs that didn't pay well due to the people offering it being, well, poor. So underneath all that insulting, selfish and utterly narcissistic interior, one could say he had a good heart. Perhaps that was one of the few reasons he wasn't outright hated by the Guilds and the governments of the three nations, along with the fact that he also did jobs for them and he did it well.
One of Lucian's favourite places was Mistral. He loved the trees, he loved the smells, he loved the people and he loved the drinks. Most of all, he loved how much action Mistral had. He visited the place more than he visited Vale and Atlas, and most notably, he was there during the Faunus War that took place, entering Mistral a year into the war and staying until it ended in 21 AV, three years later. During his time in this war, he helped the huntsmen's guild as well as the government a lot by taking jobs that most would call suicidal. But Lucian, with his experience in solo missions, was the perfect pick for these high risk missions as he was one man instead of a squad of 4, could work with stealth very well and he was, well, expendable. Not that he cared, as he was paid fairly well.
When the war was over, the government decided to repay Lucian for his help by offering him citizenship, because despite his bad reputation, he also had a good reputation, and he had helped a lot. Instead of cutting his losses and running from the danger and chaos of war, he had stayed and helped, taking the risks that no one else wanted to, and despite claiming that he did it for the money and the 'thrill', he had still done a lot, including one instance where he had been injured in an effort to save civilians who had been caught in the crossfire. Lucian, while turning down the offer, was still somewhat moved by the gesture, calling the mayor a number of colorful words in a friendly, nice way, to which the mayor surprisingly did not take offense to, saying the doors to Mistral were open for him. With that settled, Lucian went back to Vacuo.
However, during his time back in the wilderness of Vacuo, something happened. Perhaps he bit off more than he could chew. Perhaps he was poisoned or fell to a disease. Perhaps he was grievously injured by one of the many, many people he had pissed off over the years. But he disappeared for a time, and when he returned, he was a changed man. A shadow of his former self, lacking the legendary skills that had made him somewhat of a legend during his time as a hunter and during his time in the Faunus War in Mistral. His reputation began to fall with his new lack of capability, and soon, after one too many bad decisions that resulted in failed bounties and loss of innocent lives. Despite how uncaring Lucian might seem, he was actually quite devastated and depressed over it, and retired from bounty hunting and Vacuo as a whole, deciding to spend his days in Mistral instead, where the weather was nice and the alcohol was cheap. He called in the offer the Mayor had made him several years ago for a place to live, and took it as a bitter retirement.
But while he was there, he was reached out to by the headmaster of Haven Academy, after The Fall. He was not the best choice for a teacher, with his lack of tact when it came to personality, his disrespectful and eccentric behaviour. But he had proven himself, in his own way, to be someone who had his heart in the right place, and he was somewhat of a war hero here for his actions in Mistral. So despite him being nothing but a shell of his former glory and skill, he was still a good choice for helping shape the future generation of Huntsmen, having been a damn good sniper during his prime. His eccentric nature could be an issue, but the Headmaster saw it as a good choice to offset the most-likely growing depression or trauma that the trainees would experience. Thus, Lucian accepted, seeing nothing better to do and not admitting to the fact that he did want to help train a better future, and also wanting something else to do before he 'keeled over from liver failure.'
Professor Van Sange currently teaches classes involving Marksmanship, Psychology and Interpersonal Cooperation to promote out-of-combat relationship building and activities for students. He is also the current counselor for the academy’s students, acting as both advisor and therapist for any problems the students may be having.
Extra
Sange is Romanian for blood, which signifies the color red.
If it wasn’t obvious, Lucian’s favourite color is red.
He does not want to return to Vacuo at all, because the place only holds bitter memories for him and a lot of people there still want him dead.
No one really knows what caused Lucian to suddenly fall from grace, and he never talks about it.
His snacking habit comes from his serial abuse of liquor and smoke, which he is trying to cut back on at the behest of the Headmaster. During class hours, at least.
His infamous moniker is “The Red Death”.
He enjoys music of all kinds, loves to watch cartoons and has a sweet tooth.
He shares a strange kind of friendship with both the Headmaster, a few older huntsmen and the Mayor of Mistral, which had developed during his time in Mistral during the years of the Faunus War. It's rumored he still goes out to join for drinks with many of them.
He enjoys very enthusiastic walks at night.
While many still hold distrust and a negative opinion for Lucian Van Sange, they can't deny that the man does have good intentions behind his twisted personality, and that he values loyalty above all, and thus, is extremely loyal. The only moments Lucian ever really has been seen getting angry has been when children have been threatened or his friends have been insulted.
