Vermelhao “Vermel” Clover
"Vermel Clover; Author, Scientist, Flautist, Yoga-enthusiast. The pleasa’ is all mine."
Age 25 Gender Male Faction Civilian Tier Beginner Face Claim Lee Shin Kanji from Bloodivores OOC Name Corranis |
Character Traits
Date of Birth: 1 AV, 7th of February
Species: Human
Hometown: Vacuo
Romantic Orientation: Homosexual
Hair Color/Style: A deep Bordeaux, kept long in a single ponytail with bangs hanging to the side.
Eye Color: Red
Aura Color: Bordeaux
Height: 184 cm
Weight: 71 kg
Appearance: Vermelhao is built more lanky than anything else, standing just a bit taller than 6 feet. While he has a rather excellent physique to look at, there isn’t all that much muscle or brute strength in his body. His bordeaux hair is kept long, though dignified enough to not be called unkempt. His general expression is usually stoic, while his gaze is sharp and often called to be sly.
His style of clothing is rather diverse, being somewhat of a fashion obsessed person. While most of his outfits still carry somewhat of his Vacuo roots in them, Vermelhao seems just as comfortable in a suit as he is wearing sweatpants. The man makes the clothes, in this case.
While not stupid by any stretch of the imagination, Vermelhao seems to make use of more difficult words to seem extra smart whenever he is able. In part to hide his still prevalent accent, and part to speak like the person how wanted to be. How else would you convince people that you are a scientist? Get a degree?
Character Overview
Born as the eldest Clover sibling, Vermelhao was the most intellectually gifted child of the five. His dream as a little boy was to become a doctor with a fancy white lab coat, healing all the sick people. A shame that he was born in the outskirts of Vacuo to a family of farmers, storyteller, and instrument-makers. From an early age, the boy was adept at tinkering with things, as well as understanding how abstract sciences worked. Math made more sense to the boy than music did, though he could still find enjoyment out of both in his youth. His instrument of choice became the flute, which he found simple and efficient. Of all the siblings, Vermelhao was the voice of reason in the group, trying to bring some sense of order when the others attempted to go a bit too far with their antics. While still having oodles of ‘Clover-Charisma’, Vermelhao was the most reserved, only using it when he needed it. Otherwise, he stayed silent and lost in thought. He was also the most faint-hearted, avoiding risks and unnecessary trouble. He was the mind, and certainly not the brawn.
This ‘better-safe-than-sorry’ attitude eventually drove a wedge between Vermelhao and his parents. He didn’t find the risks of living in the outskirts outweighed the benefits. Freedom and family roots were not worth the risk of starvation if yet another harvest failed, a trader got eaten on the way to the village, or if bandits attacked yet again. When Vermelhao turned 18 he made the conscious choice to move to Vacuo’s capital to find paying work in the city. With the money he earned he wanted to support the needs of his siblings back home, as well as maybe pay for them all moving to the capital if things went really well.
Things didn’t go very well.
Vermelhao worked a ton of short-term jobs. From fast-food employer, to electrician, to help desk attendant, to petty journalist. He was qualified, if not over-qualified, for everything he tried to do, but nothing really gave him satisfaction long enough to keep a job. He just grew bored after a few months of work. Because of this, the money that actually went back home wasn’t very much, as well as irregular. Still, it was something, and Vermelhao always delivered it himself to make sure that he could see his siblings. He always kept silent about supporting the family financially, not wanting his siblings to be upset. Let them have their childhood, they will discover things on their own terms. While not happy with his position, Vermelhao was content enough with his life. As the story usual goes, everything changed when the Grimm attacked.
After the Grimm attacked his home village and death of his uncle, who Vermelhao didn’t particularly liked though he respected his sacrifice to humanity, the oldest sibling was heavily in favour of sending his youngest siblings away to some place safe. He blamed his parents for not having done this sooner, but he didn’t start another fight out of it to upset the already shaken family. He basically donated every spare Lien he had to pay for the ticket to Haven and their stay there. He worked overtime for months as a ghost writer back in the capital to make sure there was enough money, so their parents weren’t ruined financially. Despite his resentment towards his parents, Vermelhao didn’t wanted to see his parents out on the streets without a penny to their name. Vermelhao himself waved off his siblings when they left, but he kept quiet about him helping pay for a sizeable chunk of the costs. That is what an older brother does.
After Vermelhao’s siblings weren’t in immediate financial need anymore, the young man took the time to discover what he wanted to do with the rest of his life now that he was somewhat free to pursue whatever road he wanted. Inspired by his late uncle, the Shield of Vacuo, Vermelhao wanted to use his brain to make sure that nothing like this ever happened again to another family. He knew that he wasn’t strong, so he couldn’t just fight Grimm like a Huntsman could. He needed to find the best strategy and tools to defeat them. To do that, you need to do research. Vermelhao chose that the best approach is field work.
Now going by ‘Vermel’, the aspiring researcher managed to spend the next 14 months traveling Remnant. He mostly followed huntsmen, either working in groups, or as individuals on the assignments that were ‘safe enough’ to take a ‘journalist’ with them. Because well, Vermel didn’t have a credential to his name to call himself a scientist, so he wasn’t going to convince anyone to let him tag along for science’s sake. While he made all the necessary notes that could be useful in developing the best tactic to fight Grimm, he brought it a bit differently to a potential client. His approach: “I will make sure that the whole world knows about your exploits, because Vermel Clover, renowned storyteller and journalist will write a kick-ass piece about you, and you will get so much fans that your schedule is full till the day you die. Also, maybe you will one day be added to a scientific journal. Sign here, please!”
The approach worked. It worked too well. Vermel became known as a genuine hype-writer in Vacuo and Vale. If you wanted to land a brand deal, you needed to let Vermel follow you around and do his finger magic on the keyboard. The realisation dawned on Vermel that he was slowly but surely turning into his storyteller father if he didn’t do something drastic. He wanted to be known as a brilliant scientist, not as a glorified biographer. Still, not a single research institute in Vale or Atlas even replied to his applications! So what if I came from Vacuo without any form of proper education! Taking all of his notes with him, Vermel had one desperate option to escape this fate. Go to Mistral. Not only was his work barely known there because it was a kingdom of literary snobs, they currently have a severe lack of huntsmen after that gruesome accident at Haven Academy. Also, his younger siblings were supposed to be there, were they not? Hopefully they lived quiet and safe lives after all the trouble he and his parents went through to give them this opportunity.
So, Vermel now tries to quietly live a life of anonymity as he finalizes his notes into something useful for the scientific world. New insights about Grimm, and how to best combat them in the field. He had enough funds to buy a modest apartment in the Ground district, and he still occasionally writes stuff about huntsmen to make ends meet. The day will come when the world will know the brilliant mind of Vermelhao Clover, scientist extraordinaire!
