It couldn’t be true. [break] [break]
Irving Russet excused himself from the table. It was an awfully polite gesture as only his wife was sitting in front of him in the dinner booth. She just smiled, thinking that his burger might not have agreed with him. Beef sometimes had that effect on him. The two of them had found the time in their schedule to have a bite to eat outside. She from her accounting work, he from painting the walls of their new apartment. The disadvantage of buying cheap. It wasn’t easy renovating their new home in winter. Everybody told them to wait for spring, but the newlyweds didn’t have that luxury. Even though it had been snowing quite heavily, Argus still managed to keep its roads clear. Some of that Atlas tech had to be good for something. [break] [break]
As the man was walking through the half-empty establishment towards the toilets in the back, he reconsidered if he had seen it clear enough. It couldn’t be her, could it? Nobody told her anything. Still, he saw her clearly enough, if only by chance. Did she wanted to be seen? If all the stories that father told, she was good at not being seen. Still, she was wearing that robe she wore all those years before when she tried to ‘reconnect’. How could he forget those clothing? It had to be her. Why was she here? How dared ‘she’ to be here?[break] [break]
There was a small hallways that separated the toilet rooms from the dinner. Nobody but her had come in, right? His gaze shifted between the small ‘Gentlemen’ and ‘Ladies’ signs that denoted the intended audience of each restroom. Even if there was someone else in the ladies’ room, he could always play dumb. Tell them that it was just a mistake. He needed to know. Irving needed to know if that woman truly had the gall to stalk him. To stalk the both of them. [break] [break]
Taking another look around, Irving opened the door. There she stood, looking into the mirror of the sink as if she was just a regular occupant. He walked inside, looking around for a moment. Listening if somebody was using the stalls. The old woman spoke first, as if she knew his thoughts. “We are alone, Irving. Nobody is here except-“[break] [break]
He didn’t let her finish.[break] [break]
The man walked forward, closing the door. Making sure to lock it. Small spots of sweat could be seen beneath his pits now. His hand was kept on the doorhandle. His knuckles were white from how tight he kept his grip on it. He wanted to punch a hole through the door. He wanted to scream. He wanted to throw that old hag’s face through the mirror. If he had a gun at this very moment, he wanted to empty the entire clip in her direction.[break] [break]
He knew that all of that would be futile, and his wife could never know of this meeting. [break] [break]
Having worked up the strength to face the woman again without flying to her throat, Irving turned around. His brown eyes looked at her. It took him a lot not to scream, though it was very clear to the both of them that he was upset. “You couldn’t just leave us alone? You could have called. You could have knocked on our door like a regular fucking person!” [break] [break]
This time Meng Long interrupted the other. She gave a haughty and dry chuckle, as she shook her head. Her wrinkled eyes looked keenly at the man in front of him. Overweight, little personal care, a beard that didn’t suited him. Her tone was ripe with scorn. “And would you have answered? Would you open your door to that crappy apartment? You didn’t in Vale, you wouldn’t do it now. I know that you hate me, but it my right to-“ [break] [break]
Irving interrupted again. A vein now became visible on the right side of his head. His heart was pounding when she spoke about him treating her unfairly. His voice was raised now, ever so close to shouting. “You lost every, damned, right to anything when you left us! When you left my father, when you left me! When decided that your little play was over! You are a fucking war criminal! I will never let you be a part of my family after everything you got away with!” [break] [break]
The old woman didn’t seem to have been that impressed with the accusations directed at her. It wasn’t anything that she hadn’t heard before. She coldly replied without showing any sign of hostility. It was without any love also. “Yes, yes. I am the heartless old crone who got away with it all. Tell me something that I do not know; He should have been born already, shouldn’t he? Is everything all right with that woman of yours?”[break] [break]
Irving didn’t saw clearly for a while. How did she know? How long had she known about them? How did she even know it was going to be boy? Irving clenched his fists, as the spots under his pits grew larger. His voice betrayed that a hint of doubt had entered his mind in addition to the angriness. “The doctors say that it isn’t uncommon for a mixed marriage that the baby takes another couple of weeks. Not that you will ever see him.”[break] [break]
Meng Long now squinted her eyes. She didn’t even try to show her disgust at the explanation. Her words were dripping with vitriol as she took a few steps forward. “To think that my son would marry and put a baby into a mutt. So, it seemed that your actions made your poor old mother come all out here for nothing. You truly are a fat and disgusting failure.”[break] [break]
The old woman made her way over to stand in front of Irving. With all of his might he remained standing, neither backing down or going out of the way when he became clear that Meng Long wanted to exit the restroom. “Get out of the way, boy. You know what happens when you try to act like a man you are not.”[break] [break]
It was all that was needed to be said.[break] [break]
Standing in the small hallway was Luna Russet, looking a bit awkwardly at the men’s restroom. Her fluffy ears perked up when she heard the sound of the door closing behind her. Turning around, the heavily pregnant Faunus looked at the old woman with some concern. The old woman gave a smile as she approached, asking what was wrong. The newlywed woman said that her husband never could handle his beef, and that she was concerned that he had become unwell. He had looked pale white when he left the table. The stranger thrice her age gave a kind smile, and assured that he will be all right. She addressed that a woman with a child that long in the oven should not rush and stir at every sign of trouble, and offered to help her get back to their table. The Faunus smiled and placed some faith in the wisdom of the elder. The two walked back, exchanged some mild pleasantries, and parted ways.[break] [break]
Irving Russet exited the restroom five minute later. He knew that it was foolish to have lunged at the woman who was her mother. She only gave him a single blow to his stomach, but he knew that it was bruised heavily without even needing to lift his sweater. It felt good to think that he ever had a chance to give her a punch. He knew that it was but a fantasy. Returning to his wife, the two of them quietly finished their meals.[break] [break]
Irving Russet never spoke to his wife about what really happened in that restroom stall.
