Combat & Inventory
Coal Constructs
Rank of Semblance: E
Semblance Type: Manipulator (Creation)
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Coal Constructs allows its user to create and use sharpened charcoal as both a weapon and a defense
Description of Semblance: Kodaal is able to create and use charcoal as both an offensive weapon and a capable defense. The charcoal that he produces can sprout from the ground anywhere within the length of a telephone pole (ten to twelve meters) of Kodaal, and has the durability of, as well as the power to pierce, stone. In a pinch, Kodaal can use his semblance to form crude weaponry. These constructs begin to disintegrate as soon as Kodaal changes to another construct or stops focusing on the one at hand, taking one turn to do so completely. They also disintegrate as soon as they leave Kodaal’s range.
Drawbacks of Semblance: It is a Manipulation semblance and, therefore, drains his Aura as he uses it. Not only this, it is a mostly offensive weapon, only really useful as a defensive one if he’s being aimed at by a distant gunner and needs to obscure their view. Kodaal also needs to be able to point, with his fingers, towards where the construct will emerge, otherwise he won’t be able to form charcoal with his semblance.
Flynt
Rank of Weapon(s): E
Description of Weapons(s): Flynt is a small black pistol of moderate caliber, adorned with a silencer, that Kodaal keeps hidden in a holster on the small of his back.
Non-Combat Abilities
Name of Non-Combat Ability: Stealth
Rank of Non-Combat Ability: F
Description of Non-Combat Ability: Time spent in organized crime as a child has allowed Kodaal to gain a basic understanding of stealth skills, making him better at sneaking around than the average Joe.
Combat Abilities
Name of Combat Ability: Self-Preservation (Agility)
Rank of Combat Ability: E
Description of Combat Ability: Years spent training to avoid conflict have resulted in Kodaal being able to deftly avoid a good portion of attacks being sent his way.
Name of Combat Ability: Willpower (Durability)
Rank of Combat Ability: E
Description of Combat Ability: Years of being involved in back alley scraps have heightened Kodaal’s ability to take a beating. Pair that with higher than average Aura reserves, and you’ve got a durable lad on your hands.
Name of Combat Ability: Eagle's Eye (Marksmanship)
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: Having spent a good deal of time training with his betters, Kodaal has become a decent marksman.
Name of Combat Ability: Free-Running (Acrobatics)
Rank of Combat Ability: F
Description of Combat Ability: His years of being an assassin have led Koddal needing the ability to make a quick escape. He can decently scale small walls and leap small gaps.
Name of Combat Ability: Speed-Training (Speed)
Rank of Combat Ability: F

Biography
Personality/History Freeform
Kodaal Hearth was, unknowingly, born into a life of crime. Both his mother and father were rabbit faunus that lived meager lives in the slums of Mantle. In those godsforsaken streets, you did what you could to survive. For Maura and Airien Hearth, that meant working for a small-time syndicate of organized crime. One that was entirely focused on running drugs and selling illegal goods. One that was exclusively faunus. One that might’ve accidentally slipped in a slightly too-potent batch when they heard a human of reputable status was coming their way.
For what it was worth, Kodaal’s parents did their best to keep him as far away from the life as they could. With what little they earned, he got a proper schooling, warm meals, and the general happiness that comes with a normal childhood. Even his sister, Lylah, born seven years after Kodaal, received the same treatment. It was a good life. Well, as good as can be expected of two faunus children in the slums of a large city.
Unfortunately, as the drug syndicate his parents had been working for slowly shifted to one of information gathering and distribution, it decided that… smaller ears were more efficient than larger ones. With both of their parents under the syndicate’s thumb, there was little Kodaal could do as he was dragged into the life of gathering information, just a month after Kodaal turned ten. He was taught the rigors of basic fighting, his Aura was unlocked, and he was forced to learn to be stealthy, or die trying.
Despite the fact that he’d been dragged into the syndicate, Kodaal found that he actually enjoyed gathering information. It brought with it a thrill that he’d never experienced before. One that he couldn’t get enough of. Not to mention, despite his parents' constant worries, his family was better off now than it’d ever been before. They couldn’t afford to leave the slums, as per the syndicate’s design, but his parents had been skipping noticeably less meals.
This lifestyle continued for eight and a half years. During that time, Lylah was also inducted into the fray as an information gatherer. Eight years of growth occurred from simple information gathering, into a ‘protection agency,’ until, finally, the syndicate had grown ambitious enough to accept small time hits when Kodaal turned seventeen. And, with Kodaal’s semblance recently unlocked, he made the perfect unsuspected assassin. As his assignments grew in severity, Kodaal found himself hating himself more and more. But what was he to do? If he refused, he’d be killed, likely along with the rest of the family. The syndicate couldn’t afford weak stomachs. His only solace was that his sister hadn’t gone past simple information gathering.
After those eight and a half years were up, though, the syndicate had found that it had grown too ambitious. The ever growing eye of Atlas’ might had finally deemed them a worthy threat and, in a horrible night of screams, panic, and defeat, the syndicate he’d been with and influenced by for all his life, along with his mother, were gone. What followed was a short six months of barely scraping by on the streets with his sister and his father. Then everything took an even wider turn for the worse.
The Faunus Rights Revolution began.
The slums of Mantle were purged of any faunus that might be involved in ‘gang activity.’ It was done in such a quick and orderly fashion, that both Kodaal and his remaining family had little time to prepare. In the chaos of everything, he was separated from his father and backed into a corner, the Atlas patrols closing in on both him and his sister. If they were found, Kodaal knew they'd kill both him and the sister that was so dear to him, and all for the little cottontail that rested at his lower back and the ears that sat upon Lylah's head.
Letting that happen wasn't an option. With little time to spare and knowing that, without a distraction, they'd be found, it was all Kodaal could do to stow his sister in a nearby dumpster and take drastic measures.
The charcoal he used was sharp, but the pain that came with it was even sharper. When the Atlas patrols found him, all they found was a scared, human teenager. One that was easily ignored.
By some miracle, he managed to reunite with his father before they escaped the city. Having heard word of an encampment to the East before the war had truly began, his father took both him and his sister, where the two oldest of the three were enlisted. Lylah was more of a support asset, allowed to move around camps with their father, while both Kodaal, having already killed, and his father were enrolled as soldiers. The three of them were told they could stay together, so long as they fought.
The war passed in a blur. Some time early on during the first war, Kodaal earned the nickname ‘Charcoal’ in relation to his semblance, due to the fine dust he'd end up being covered in at the end of a fight. He’d usually be used in more of an ambush role, his now human appearance able to stun traveling companies. It was during the second year of the war that his father died in one of the more gruesome battles. It shocked Kodaal, but he still had his sister to protect, so he had to go on.
Near the end of the war, the pair were transferred to Fort Castle on an indefinite basis. They remained there for the rest of the war, even after the battle itself. All the while, Kodaal insisted that his sister, who seemed to grow weaker by the day, refrain from learning to fight. A plea that she reluctantly obliged. He didn’t know what he’d do if she ended up in the same life as him. He didn’t know what he’d fight for anymore.
After the war ended, Kodaal twenty-two and Lylah fifteen, the pair traveled to Menagerie to finally make an attempt at a peaceful, normal life. They did well making their way into it, as well. They both worked part time jobs, attending school all the while. But, it was not meant to be.
After six years of a calm life, Lylah progressively becoming weaker and weaker, she finally collapsed. The doctors in Menagerie had no clue what might be going on. They directed him to a hospital in Mistral.
During the trip, Lylah grew progressively worse. By the time he arrived in Mistral, she was almost in a coma. He rushed her into the hospital, where she was admitted and put in a medical coma. They still couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the girl, but they, at least, could keep her alive. It was enough, for the time being. It was also expensive. Too expensive for any job that Kodaal was qualified for, at least.
Except one thing.
His information gathering skills coming back to him, Kodaal found and joined the Asche Syndicate with relative ease. His only stipulation? Pay his sister’s medical bills and feed him. Do that and he’d work for them. It was an easy enough deal. So began his ordeals in the Asche Syndicate, under the alias ‘Charcoal.'
