[attr=class,cs-main]
Date of Birth: August 30th 4 BV
Species: Human
Hometown: Mistral
Romantic Orientation: Bisexual
Hair Color/Style: Light blonde, kept in a short bob. Clean and decently kept aside from some split ends.
Eye Color: Yellow
Aura Color: Gold
Height: 157cm
Weight: 60kg
Courses Taught: Red class homeroom, individual combat, defense tactics/how to hold an area, willing to do individual tutoring in semblance control
Appearance: She’s hard to miss despite how small she is because she’s loud and full of energy at almost all times. She’s the type of person that almost always has a smile on her face if not a full on stupid grin. Her demeanor is light and brimming with confidence, often making her look like she doesn’t have a care in the world, at least until she feels the need to be serious.
Her body was badly mangled in an accident. It took out most of her right side: a large swath of her face, including her right eye, her right arm, and about half of her right thigh and everything below the knee on her right leg. That entire area has bad burn scars, as well as a few other scars from conventional weapons. Her right leg and arm are obvious prosthetics with white and gold coloring. Her missing eye is covered by an eyepatch. The attack damaged her eyesight and hearing badly enough that she also has to wear glasses and use hearing aids for the time being.
Valeska makes no effort to hide any of her injuries, and continues to wear whatever she wants. At school, that’s typically nicer, more professional clothing like suits, but in her off time around town, she’s just as likely to wear a tank top as she is a jacket (depending on the weather). Her style is clean, but still focuses on comfort more than style. Even when dressing nicely, she won’t wear heels or anything that’s annoying and/or painful to move in.
Personality: Energetic and outgoing, Valeska loves being around people and seems to have endless stores of energy. She almost never seems tired and has a great deal of patience. She’s more than happy to strike up a conversation with random people, or continue talking to people about whatever after finishing important discussions. She loves people and loves being around them. She’s not afraid of looking dumb or making mistakes, is difficult to offend, and no longer has much of an ego.
Her high energy is evident in her teaching style. She’s prone to loudly shouting words of encouragement or insults to encourage people to do better in a way that’s rarely mean spirited. She wants people to be the best they can be and she is willing to work hard with them to help them achieve that. It makes her a bit of a busy-body that gets into peoples’ faces, but she means well.
That said, she does have a more serious side to her. She’s patient, but won’t take anyone’s shit if they’re being unreasonable or have crossed a line. She prefers to be more easy going, but knows when to lay down the law because letting people do whatever they want often has bad results. She wants people to be the best they can be, and that means helping them through their mistakes and not letting those mistakes be devoid of consequences.
Color Naming Rule: Valeska means glorious or victorious leader, which loosely references gold. Zolotova means gold.
Semblance Name: Shining Field
Semblance Type: Manipulator (Creation)
One Sentence Summary of Semblance: Valeska Zolotova has the manipulator semblance of Shining Field which allows her to create electromagnetism and manipulate the electromagnetic forces she creates.
Description of Semblance: Her semblance allows her to create electromagnetic fields, and to manipulate the fields she creates. Even though she’s manipulating magnetism, she’s most known for the powerful streaks of lightning spinning magnets make. With the way she uses it, her semblance looks much more like an lightning-based semblance than a magnetic one. The lightning she generates is a bright gold, like her aura.
Drawbacks of Semblance: She has to generate forces near her and then expand outwards, so ranged attacks take a little bit of time to build up. That time is often only seconds until it gets closer to the limits of her range, but in combat those seconds matter. For any attack further than half of her attack range, it takes one post to charge up.
It’s a very chaotic and difficult to control semblance. Without focusing intently, anything outside of melee range is going to fan out and attack mostly indiscriminately. Thus, if she wants to attack outside of melee, she can’t move even to attack. This doesn’t mean she completely loses control of her semblance when forcibly moved, just that she has to ragdoll in whatever direction she’s pushed in. She cannot be carried or otherwise moved by someone else either, unless the area she’s targeting is moving at the same speed she is (IE, if she’s on a big truck and is making lightning in the area on the truck).
She is limited to manipulating the forces she creates and cannot manipulate existing electromagnetic forces, limiting a lot of the physics breaking stuff she can do and largely limiting her to generating lightning and static electricity without expanding lots of aura (read, I might use some of this for flavor for imitating other skills but that’s it).
Drains aura on use.
Weapon Name: Personal Fortress
Description of Weapons(s): She fights with a large shield weapon made of interconnecting plates. This allows it to shift into different shapes to cover different directions and types of attacks. Shifting it from one form to another takes time because of all the pieces that have to move, so while she can adapt to attack types, she can’t react enough to use the shield to block every attack.
While it has a lot of defensive utility, it’s still a weapon at heart. Each plate has sharpened edges that can be used as bladed weapons, and several plates have various long range weapons in them. The long range ones come in two types: the first are larger cannons that are imprecise and are meant to cover large areas. The others are smaller guns, not that much larger than a handgun, that are meant for more precise attacks where she cares about not causing any collateral damage. The weapons can move around just as easily as the rest of the plates, giving it the appearance of a small fortress.
The plates are a polished white metal with intricate golden designs on them. This one is considerably sized down compared to the one she used while an active Huntress to accommodate her lowered strength. It’s large enough to comfortably fit her and three other people behind it when fully expanded in a defensive formation. When not in use, she keeps it coiled up on her left arm.
Born into a wealthy family with close ties to the leadership of the Artisan’s Guild, Valeska lived an easy childhood and was protected from the effects of the Great War. Her parents weren’t especially strict, but they also weren’t especially attentive. Both her and her siblings were largely able to do whatever they wanted with in reason and strove to do great things because of the prominent roles their parents played in the community, and so they could get their parent’s attention. As they all grew up, her siblings found their various niches, some of them prodigies even, but as the youngest it took awhile for Valeska to find hers.
It wasn’t any grand revelation, nor did anything terrible happen. She went skiing for the first time when she was eight. It was a simple trip to a resort with her family. It was cold, skiing was hard, and she kept falling. After a few hours, she suddenly unlocked her aura and in that moment, she decided she was going to be a Huntress. The institution was new, but that was all the more reason they needed strong special people like her to help protect everyone.
Her parents were okay with that path and she started preparing accordingly. They hired a private tutor for her, and once she was old enough, she attended Sanctum and then Haven. With such a head start with aura and weapon training, she unlocked her semblance before starting at Sanctum, and ended up being strong relative to her peers. Between this and the attention seeking behavior she learned trying to get her parents to notice her, she developed an ego and was eager to prove herself the best. She challenged herself in every way she could think of and took on every mission she was allowed to, going for the most difficult ones when given a choice. She took her education and vocation seriously, even if she was absolutely eating up all the attention it was getting her.
That drive ended up getting her involved in the Faunus Rights Revolution a year before she was set to graduate from Haven. She fought for the human side and believed she was protecting her home from a pointless violent revolution. She didn’t get her license until near the end of the war, but she didn’t need to be a licensed Huntress to be a terror on the battlefield against mostly auraless combatants. Her aura was strong enough that conventional weapons and small arms couldn’t hurt her, and her semblance meant she could quickly level an entire area as long as none of her allies were too close. Guerilla warfare was ineffective against her, and her defensive capabilities were strong enough that she could stand up well to the few faunus that did have semblances, not to mention the Grimm that the war inevitably attracted. She made a name for herself during the war, and didn’t miss a beat when it ended even though her side lost.
There was a lot that needed to be done after the war. Repairs, amends, finding new places for people to live. She did none of this, instead focusing on taking down the biggest, baddest Grimm and criminals she could find. For a long time, her reputation mattered more than anything. While she wanted to help people and genuinely wanted to make a difference in the world, climbing up that ladder felt better to her.
Until it eventually didn’t. There was no revelation or any specific event, just enough time interacting with failure and death, along with growing up and growing more mature, that it just stopped mattering to her. She re-evaluated her priorities and started focusing on defense tactics. Her skillset had always been better suited to it, she just forced it into more offensive situations with the help of her semblance. She still liked talking to people and praise, but they were no longer the cornerstone of her life.
Years passed and she continued to serve and protect the world. She made friends and enemies, and making too many enemies ended up ending that service. A few syndicates that she was working on wiping out banded together, gathered several hostages, and lured her out. She managed to get the hostages out, but she should have died for it. Her strong aura was whittled down and eventually broken, then she was blown to pieces by explosives. The right side of her body was completely mangled, and she had to escape by rolling off the side of a cliff and painfully slowing her fall. The criminals couldn’t confirm her death because of that, and she managed to crawl her way to a village to get treatment. The villagers managed to call for help and get her shipped to Atlas to recover.
She spent the next two years in the hospital. At first, she was depressed because this would undoubtedly end her career as a Huntress. Even with the prosthetics and the best medical assistance money could by, it hurt to move, her depth perception was gone with the loss of one of her eyes, she couldn’t see or hear as well as before, and withering away in bed for so long dulled her skills. She was at a loss of what to do until someone asked if they wanted to try an experimental procedure on her. Her aura was still strong, so if something went wrong, she should be able to handle it. Later, that expanded into letting new doctors operate on her to train, and she felt like she had finally found her place in the world again. Even if she couldn’t do what she used to do, she could prepare the next generation.
So naturally, once she was healthy enough that she could do combat training every other day if she didn’t exert herself too hard, she jumped on the opportunity to teach at Haven and returned to Mistral.
