-Thanks. That would be really helpful, professor- I responded with a smile when Valeska agreed to help me with my little problem at hand.
I understood that the academy was going through hell and high water with us right now. So It was likely that they didn’t do another midterms exam due to the lack of a big enough group to conduct the tests.
But I had been here for about almost eight months. And I knew damn well that those were, as their name suggests, occur in the middle of the year. So I didn’t think I was asking for much. When I wanted to know what that was all about.
There was the chance that they had changed strategies. And were now choosing to safeguard the students as much as they could as a future investment... But if this was the case. I needed to know. So I could plan alternative training plans to keep up with the rest of the alumni.
Or I could just... Bother Argent until he took me with him... Yeah... That could also work. I knew I could be really annoying when I was in the mood for it. So snake boy didn’t stand a chance. Plus, I liked working with him. He was dependable and went straight to the point as it should be.
But I digress, back to the topic at hand. It was time for Chloro’s question... And it looked like it was kind of an uncomfortable one. At least for Chloro, since I didn’t fail to notice how she strategically hid the paper away from my sight.
Nevertheless, I could still make an educated guess about what Chloro wanted to ask of the professor. And I realized I was kinda the third wheel for a moment since I still retained all of my senses and limbs, unlike my new partner and teacher.
So I remained sat in silence as Valeska responded after a brief moment of contemplation. Apparently not catching up with Chloro’s attempts to make this question a little more personal.
I frowned for a second. But let it slide. Turning my gaze to a corner of the room, trying to make my presence as unobtrusive as possible. And realizing this might as well have been a blunder on Chloro's part.
Valeska seemed to remain pretty positive despite her injuries. Or at least that was the image she wanted to project unto us. Taking a closer look at her prosthetics and the lack of them in some notorious places. I could only conclude that it was such a shame that she had been injured like this.
Her looks were the least important thing. Even if it was still clear that she had been a pretty woman before she was left like this. I even thought about making some kind of lighthearted commentary, reassuring her that she still maintained a part of her old charm...
I refrained from doing so. First, because it would be a lie, as harsh as this may sound. Especially Valeska's facial disfigurement. Which was simply too far reaching for most people not to have an issue with it. And second, because I highly doubted saying something like that would be appreciated in this context.
But the real pity, at least in my opinion. Was what had happened to the rest of Zolotova's body. I didn't know how Valeska was used to fighting. But most huntsmen depend in some way or another on having delicate control over their weapons, be in melee or as a ranged fighter. And even if she could do the broad strokes of it, it went without saying that she had to retire early for a reason.
Which was the reason why I needed to grow stronger. So I could avoid something like that from happening to me. I needed to keep evolving further. And that, sadly, involved exposing myself to a safe modicum of real danger every now and then.
Now regarding Chloro’s electives. They were things I could see the chameleon faunus having an interest in... But that wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I gave Chloro the chance to speak up.
-Huh... Chloro... Besides the things you wanna learn and which I think are really cool. I was thinking about the things you need to be taught about. Like you not knowing what a Doberman is. Or what a vegetable is, or what most of them are named... Or, like. You know. The things you asked Berwyn and me to teach you about-
I said. Not wanting to share details with the professor to protect Chloro’s intimacy and whatnot. I felt weird just by proposing something for the mute girl when she hadn’t asked for it. But I honestly thought it was something worth being addressed.
-I’m not trying to put you in the spotlight here. And I’m glad to help you whenever I can. But I think someone with professional knowledge should guide you to catch up with all you are missing. Even if outside of regular academy hours. At the very least so you can be better at social interaction with civilians but also because you deserve it-
I said. Looking directly at my partner. Wanting to express how much I believed this to be true. She was training to go risk her hide for Mistral. The least Mistral could do after failing her so many times was to give her the tools to make her life easier for the time being.
-You know how much this kingdom owes you. Don’t be shy to use it now that you have the chance- I finally sentenced. Knowing that Valeska may not understand what we were talking about. But I trusted her to get up to speed on it sooner rather than later.
