Our pursuit of the dust ward killer had shone some insightful light over my current situation at Haven. Making me aware of a couple things I had already been suspecting, but that now I had confirmation of.
First, I wasn’t nearly as strong as I ought to be. If we were going to keep facing threats of that magnitude. I needed some way to get stronger, faster. So I would have to step up my game somehow.
The second one was probably more evident in hindsight. But nevertheless, something that needed to be addressed.
I was slow as fuck.
This much, I had knowledge of. To which degree I was slow? This was actually new information. But I hadn’t been able to hold a candle to the killer. And this was using my semblance to cheat my way through it. Which meant the only way I got to get quickly between two points in space was to burn a considerable chunk of my aura to achieve it.
This wouldn’t do. Arriving at a fight already tired was a prime recipe for disaster. So in the interest of solving that. I had taken a decisión... I was getting a vehicle.
Now. How does a girl, broken and without a stable source of income. Manages to get her hands on a suitable means of transportation? Well...
You basically get a word out and pray. Some fucker out there ought to have something to fit your needs. It’s always like that. And I had more than a couple contacts that would be willing to sell me some trashy vehicle for some quick, hard cash.
And sooner rather than later. I got a pretty enticing offer. A guy named Payaso had an old model that he wanted to get his hands off. And needed the cash for personal expenses. Which probably meant he was out of whatever substance he was hooked to.
Not like I could do anything about it. If I went trying to rehabilitate every junkie in the city. I would grow old and still not be able to scratch the tip of the iceberg.
And speaking of scraping the tip of the iceberg. I was just on my way out when I saw a familiar face coming from the opposite side of the quad. A jumpy, energetic girl with white hair and fox features who had almost fried me during our brief encounter in the White Nights Festival. And who had to be hospitalized afterward.
And at that moment, an idea sprung into my mind. To help me kill two birds with one stone and make this little trip a little more memorable.
-Yo! Fable!- I called out to the foxy lady walking in my direction. Motioning for her to stop for a second. I knew everyone else was pretty busy right now, but I could use some friendly company for this small venture.
-Do you know about bikes? A guy wants to sell me one. And I was thinking about bringing with me someone who could tell me if I’m making a good deal or not-
I told Fable with a friendly smile. I really hadn’t gotten to spend a lot of time with my new schoolmate, who may or may not have been the same I crossed paths with within the haunted mansion.
Whatever the case, even if she just tagged along for fun. I could use this as an opportunity to get to know her better, In part, so I could have more material to tease Rose with (or the other way around).
And also... Well... There is no easy way to put this. But after the whole ordeal with not only Holly. But the two former Haven students that actively helped the dust ward killer. I was looking forward to spending more time with my schoolmates.
This, so I could identify if there were any problematic students who I should keep an eye open for, and, if possible. To try and help the ones who may be going through difficult times because of this.
I knew Fable was a weird one. And I hoped she was just affably crazy and not murderous crazy. But there was one way of figuring that out...
-That... Or at least to pretend they know their stuff so this dude won’t try and scam me. What do you say? Are you up for it?- I finished, leaving the invitation in the air. Honestly, I doubted the girl knew how to properly ride a motorcycle... But I was open to being pleasantly surprised!
Besides, riding through the city with Fable could only end up being fun. Right? Or at least turning into a neat story to tell the next time I got drunk.
-He even says he can get the thing closer to the academy. Up to wind district, even. So we wouldn’t even have to walk for long-
I finished, checking the newest message to my scroll. Apparently, the guy could carry the thing pretty much midway through the mountain... Which was a little suspicious in and out of itself. But, whatever. I wouldn’t complain about someone wanting to make my life easier.
Unbeknownst to the faculty, there was a reason for things being as they were. The first warning signal was Fable's apperance. The girl was looking extremely puffy and fluffy. The fox tail was practically the cleanest it had ever been, puffed to almost twice its regular size, looking softer than clouds in the sky. The same, naturally, happening to her hair. The perhaps second warning alarm was the fact that her mood seemed oddly relaxed. There were only ever two reasons that Fable were relaxed. The girl had either just had an insanely interesting thing happen and had run low on energy, or had just achieved something which she wanted. Naturally, if something incredibly interesting had happened, it was bad news for the faculty, as Fable's understanding of interesting very rarely aligned well with what the faculty considered good. Practically, for the very same reason as mentioned above, if Fable had achieved something that she wanted, it was cause for concern. On this morning, the girl had come to appreciate the sensation of cleanliness and warm water. Normally, when Fable had gotten herself clean, it was by either licking her own fur, or rubbing some wet cloth into her ears. If the girl felt she smelled poorly, perhaps jumping into a lake and afterwards rolling around on the dirt. Dirt did have a kind of nice smell, according to Fable. However, lately, everyone else had been doing showering. After working out, before going to bed, after waking up, shower shower shower. Fable, being a curious little copycat, hadn't often had access to a shower. Even less so a bathtub. So, she had jumped in, first burnt herself, then made the water too cold, then screwing it up again, before finally figuring out how to get it just right...
...and then, while waiting for the water to fill up the tub, the warmth and comfort from the situation had made the fox sleepy. The last time a similar situation had occured, it was because Fable had found a hotsprings together with her pack leader, Okami. That had been one relaxing day. A bath was effectively a hot springs on demand! Sleepy, afterall, how was anyone going to resist such a warm comfortable nap...?
Once Fable had come to, there was water everywhere. Which, given how everyone had told her that warm water and soap made clean, didn't bother her much at all. It just meant that now Rose wouldn't be able to complain about how their room was an unclean mess, cause Fable just got it cleaned. Odd how a blonde could complain so intricately about somethiung that was so easy to fix. Just take a long nap, let water and soap run onto the room, happy and easy days...!
Ears twitched when she heard her own name. Head slowly rose to look at Bianca, who seemed excited. That, alone, was enough to get Fable excited. Tail beginning to swish slightly from side to side out of curiosity. Though, at the time Bianca began speaking, it was clear that the fox faunus had been moderately lost. "Fable not know bike. Fable also not know deal. Why not just take bike if want one, is what Fable would do. No can be tricked then." Reaching into her pocket, she picked out a bun from breakfast that she had stored earlier and began eating it. It had gotten a little dry from having rested in her pocket all day, but Fable didnt seem to mind or care...

Now that I got the chance to take a good look at my classmate. I noticed how slightly different she looked from her usual self. The girl in question always looked pretty much the same. I never saw her put a lot of effort to pimp herself out or something.
Wich was fair, She was not the only one to do so. And this was an academy for warriors, not supermodels. So it was to be expected that some of us would be less caring about how we looked and more caring about training, so we didn’t die the next time trouble brewed on the horizon.
But with Fable’s case. It was slightly different. Since she also looked, and smelled, kinda trashy as a general rule. And she wasn’t the most pleasant person to be around... Today, she looked different.
I can only say that she looked kinda... Fluffy. In a general sense. Like her fur and hair had increased in volume all of a sudden. She also looked softer and relaxed in a certain way. Plus, she smelled like heaven for once.
My only reaction to seeing her tail was to bite my lip to avoid squalling. It was the single most adorable thing I had seen in a long time... I just wanted to dig my face in it and use it as a pillow while my legs kicked back in the air.
I know it’s a super-specific description. But the mental image that came as soon as that thing crossed my eyes was simply that strong.
I usually didn’t like Faunus sticking too close to their animal traits. Because that could lead to stereotyping and insensible commentaries from either humans or other faunus (Thanks, Raul), but in this case, in particular, I was willing to make an exception.
-Hey... You are looking... Pretty good today- I said, my attention span being interrupted every time her tail swished in and out of my line of sight. It was a weird sight. More often than not, Fable was not the cleanest of girls, and sometimes she smelled like dirt... So this was a welcomed change, knowing the fox faunus finally learned about the forbidden art of hygiene products.
-Whatever you did to get your hair like that, keep doing it. It suits you well- I finally called out, giving the fox faunus a double thumbs-up before returning to the matter at hand. And to Fable’s bizarre reaction to my concerns.
-You cannot take something that isn’t yours... Uhh... Because... It’s illegal- I said, deadpanning as she ate a bun acquired from who knows where... I hoped that wasn’t stolen... Right?
-Are you by any chance... Stealing stuff for yourself?- I asked, with noticeable incredulity not to the fact that she stole. But that she so blatantly admitted doing so in front of me. And it was not as if she was my best friend or something. All things considered, we barely knew each other.
Whatever the case. That was something we could address later down the line. I hoped. For now, Fable hadn’t entirely rejected my idea of helping me with getting the bike. She just kinda had a weird way of solving the problem.
-So I need to give this person something that he wants, in this case, money, in exchange for him selling me what I want. In this case, a motorcycle...- I explained, very slowly. Making sure to pick up on it if she wasn’t getting any part of it.
It was honestly horrifying that Fable didn’t understand the concept of monetary transactions. And once again, it was a wonder how did Haven just... Let this shit happen. Again and again. I hoped that they were getting better, but the evidence seemed to point to the contrary, at least up to this point.
If we were going to see some results in the future. Then everyone needed to do their best for this thing to work. Doing only our parts was not enough now. We needed to look at this more as a team than as individual trainees.
And a part of that was checking on Fable as well. Even if that meant stripping years of my life and sanity in the process.
-...But I fear that he may lie about how good this deal is. So I need you to go with me and pretend you know something about them, so he will feel discouraged from doing so. Do you think you can pull that off?-
I asked again, eager to see her response. I knew I could probably get what I wanted by stroking her ego. But that was not something I felt comfortable enough with doing. So I’d save it as a last resource if anything else failed.
I mean. Fable couldn’t be that hard to reason with. Right? I was probably just being paranoid anyway...
First, Bianca had Fable's attention. Then began all the comments about how Fable looked, which was immediately suspicious to the fox. This was that kind of thing people did when they wanted someone to do something specific. The word Fable was looking for was on the tip of her tongue. Manipulation?... No, that couldn't be it, it was far too fancy and smart sounding. Not a word Fable typically used. Mulling it over for a second, her tail was still swishing from side to side, joyous that she had caught on to what was going on long before being naive enough to fall for it! Exciting developments. Raising a finger and pointing directly at Bianca, Fable exclaimed happily: "Hah! Fable knows this! Bianca is doing the flirting with Fable to get Fable do what Bianca wants! Fable far too smart for that!" The girl certainly wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, yet the conviction and confidence with which she carried herself may lead many to believe that she was in fact inherently a genius. The fox's eyes rested on Bianca for a moment, letting the other girl take it in, as the entire conversation slowly settled on Fable. The tail had stopped swishing from side to side. The head had tilted roughly 11 degrees to the right, inquisitively. Was Bianca serious..?
That sounded absolutely dreadfully boring! Like, every part of it was just a snorefest! Nothing exciting, nothing interesting, boring boring boring! Every single word that came out of Bianca's mouth was just another step up on the ladder of boredom for the arctic fox. First they would be trading, fair and square, or at least attempting to. The dubious part of the exchange was in the fact that the one they would be trading with might be a shady fellow. Not a guarantee for excitement there, in fact, there was almost a guarantee at nothing exciting there. There was no excitement in regular old trading! Then there was the whole trip getting up there, getting back, doing things... It was like Fable's energy levels visibly drained from her body alongside any and all color. Just as the girl was about to decline the invitation, gears began turning inside the fox's head.
There was nothing that prevented Fable from making her own fun out of this excursion. Heck, there was a really interesting few scenarios possible here. Bianca being unable to pay because she had lost her wallet. Fable causing a scene by accusing the biker guy of being a fraud just like Bianca claimed and making them bicker and argue. Hopping on the bike demanding a test-ride before purchasing which could lead to a stolen, broken or otherwise compromised position. Suddenly the tail was swishing from side to side, as Fable had regained her excitement for t he situation at hand. Even if none of the pictures running through her mind was tagging along to legitimately help Bianca.
"Fable best there is at such things! No one trick Fable! Fable just proved by not getting flirted. Yup yup!"

-W-What? No! I’m not flirting with you!- I blurted out defensively in an act that didn’t look suspicious at all and already red in the face.
Still, the accusing finger of Fable remained affixed on me. And I instinctively held my arms in front of me, in a “hold up” pose. Looking around to see if someone had heard what the fox faunus had just said.
There was no-one around. Which was good, for some reason. Strangely, I didn’t have a problem with openly flirting daily, but suddenly being called out on it felt a little like it was shinning the spotlight on it.
...Not that I was actually flirting with her or something! Damn this Fox girl! She was confusing...
-I was just complimenting you because you look nice, you know... I mean, from an aesthetic point of view! It’s not like I think you are personally cute...-
Wait, that didn’t feel right. It felt pretty much like a lie. -...Well, I do think you are cute. But that doesn’t have anything to do with it! It was an innocent compliment. I swear-
Puffing a little, I shook my head, regaining a fair bit of my composure as I rested my hands over my hips.
-And let me tell you, if I wanted to flirt with you, you would notice it- Great. I was making it worse, it seemed. Truly a genius conversationist... But maybe I could fix it? Or at least avoid sinking even deeper into it...
-I’m not exactly subtle with it, you know?- Oh yeah, because I was being super inconspicuous with it. But at least it served to put an end to that weird tangent and launch us into the meat and grit of why I had called Fable in the first place.
When she began to look bored by the prospect. I thought that I was losing her and that she would probably reject my offer and simply go away to do Fable things or something.
But, surprisingly, she actually accepted to come and help me! That was so nice of her! Even when it was clear the whole thing was a hassle to her, she still had it in her good graces to come and lend me a hand.
Such a good, helpful girl... I began to consider that I had probably misjudged the fox faunus this whole time. Smiling, I gave her a thumbs-up as I motioned for her to follow me to the place of the encounter.
-That’s great! Thank you Fable. I really appreciate it- I said, putting my hand over her shoulder in a gesture of affection... Wait. Too much affection!
-I’m not flirting...- I mumbled as I quickly retreated my hand. Quickly setting on pretending the interaction had never existed in the first time... I didn’t know why I was so nervous all of a sudden. I probably wouldn’t be if I was really flirting with her.
Speaking of which. Fable was a weird one for me, of course, she could be cute and pretty when she decided to bathe... But, much like it happened with Carmim for me. I just didn’t feel it.
Like, she seemed a little too naive in her own way. I was probably afraid I would be taking advantage of her or some shit if I legitimately tried something.
...I mean... I’d still hit if the situation presented itself. But I wouldn’t actively pursue it... What I would actually pursue, was something else that I still had stuck in my mind like a hungry lamprey.
-I still maintain what I said about your hair and tail though. It looks as fluffy as a cloud. Can I... Touch it? I kinda want to see if it’s as soft as it looks. Been thinking about changing shampoo, mine runs out too fast...-
I blatantly lied as an excuse to get to poke the tail. Was it creepy to want to touch your classmates? Eh... Kinda. But I wasn’t doing with anything lewd in mind... I just wanted to touch the fluffy tail! It looked adorable! I don’t think I can be blamed for letting the deeply ingrained instinct of mankind for loving cute things overpower me from time to time...
Whether she agreed or not. Sooner or later we would arrive at the place of the exchange.
There, a lanky boy with a bright orange hairdo was waiting for us. Leaning against a wall with his hands in his pockets, pretending to be cool. He nodded when he saw me coming, but shoot a suspicious gaze at fable when he noticed her presence.
-Tangerino... How’s it going, man? Do you have the bike?-
-Ye ye. It’s right here, Bia. Take a look... You brought a friend- He said suspiciously, pointing to a side where the aforementioned motorcycle waited for us...
It was a bike alright. It had two wheels, an engine, a seat. I knew how to drive one, but don’t ask me to name the parts or something like that. That could come later once I had it in my power.
-How much again?-
-3500 and it’s yours-
-Say. What? That’s way too cheap, even for an old model like this. Are these stolen goods?-
-If you know and they are stolen, then you better not know. If you know, and they are legal, then it changes nothing. If you don’t know and they are legal, it changes nothing. But, if you don’t know and they are stolen, it’s better for you since you cannot be prosecuted... Take your choice...-
…
-First thing first. That is blatantly a lie and you know shit about law. Second, what are you? A leprechaun?-
-It was from my dad! Ok? Here you have the papers. I just need the money girl. Do you want the fucking bike or not?- He said, handing me some certificate of ownership or something.
-Ok fine. Geez. Dunno why you need to be this fucking mysterious-
-Dunno why you need to bring this chick with you. Is she also a trainee? You are not going to arrest me or something for this, right? This is all perfectly legal- The guy said, quite unnecessarily, facing Fable and prompting her to say something.
Well, it was her time to shine, I guessed. I didn’t know what she had in mind. But It couldn’t be too bad... Right?

Fable narrowed her eyes somewhat. Bianca was talking a lot of words, a lot of really fast. It meant that Fable had caught Bianca off guard by so cleverly and smartly calling out the flirting. Clearly, Bianca had not expected Fable to be so aware and competent that it had left her flabberghasted. A smug, confident smile spread across Fable's lips, as the fox revelled in her own intellect. "Fable knows, Bianca no can confuse fox! Fox knows Bianca flirted. Fable is many smart." Beyond this however, Fable wasn't much interested in addressing the interaction. Instead, the fox seemed to be, somewhat, checking herself out. Just to make absolutely certain that her asessment of Bianca was flawless. Being that Fable had no actual clue on makeup, or making oneself look amazing, or any of that nonsense, she figured that her first impressions had been correct. "Was totally flirting! Even if Fox is always cute, Bianca only point out now! Flirting flirting!" At this point, it was more Fable being a tease towards Bianca, as it was clearly having some kind of amusing effect, rather than actually calling out some evil flirting plot.
When Bianca revealed her hand and motif behind the flirting, which was significantly less sinsiter than Fable had imagined, the fox was momentarily taken aback. Looking to her own tail, which was swishing from side to side out of curiosity, Fable looked to Bianca, then looked up at her own fluffy ears, then back to Bianca. Scratching her cheek, the other girl was asking if she could touch Fable's fur. Though, Fable was not one to give someone else what they wanted without getting something in return. So, proudly, the fox declared: "Of course, buuut only if you bring brush to brush Fable all soft and nice! Bianca get touch, Fable get groom, everyone happy!" Of course, in Fable's mind this was a clear win for her. Getting free grooming versus having her fur touched was almost a no-brainer. It meant she herself would have to spend less time grooming her tail. Granted, if Bianca was awful at brushing, it might hurt, and Fable would still have to do it herself, but if it truly did hurt Fable could always let out a cry of agony, make Bianca feel bad for being a bad person, and get her to do something else for Fable. At least, thats how it played out in the arctic fox's head.
As the two girls later on headed out, Fable had once again become a little disinterested and a little bored. The trading went completely over her head. As Fable had very little experience doing honest trading, the prices were just numbers and the merchandise just items. None if it held any real value or meaning to the fox. As such, the concept that the ware was worth far more money than was being demanded was so outlandish to her, that Fable failed to connect any kind of dots. So, standing in the background, looking insanely bored, she might have done nothing, if it wasnt for the fact that the man directly decided to call out to her. Which annoyed her, because she was in the middle of planning the best nap for when she got home.
"Can tell when people are lying. Can tell when people are scared." Fable said in an ominous voice, taking a step closer in a threathening fashion. Tilting head back, she sniffed softly. "Sweat and desperation. Is nervous... Is weak man, no can fight a huntress. Is know no can fool huntress too?" Fable circled around him in an arch, a bit like a predator encircling prey. Most of this was simple theatrics, as the girl truly had no clue what the man was up to. So the arctic fox was simply mixing a bit of truth with a bit of imagination to make the situation tense. Tense situations were, afterall, a lot more interesting! Drawing attention to her hand, she softly lowered it onto Yukihime, her Katana, as she continued. "Man get one chance to make right, before Fable make it right best way she know how. Chop chop."

-What? Me? Pff. Nah. No flirting here whatsoever, nope. There’s so little flirting here, it’s almost negative flirting!- I laughed awkwardly, wildly swinging my hands in front of my face in a gesture of negation.
This didn’t seem to deter the fox faunus in the slightest, who simply kept going, so assured of her own discovery that even I was starting to have my doubts... Was I... Was I perhaps flirting without noticing? This thought gave me pause. And for a couple seconds, I seriously considered the possibility as I rested my chin on my fingers.
-I mean... Unless you’d like me to be flirting... Maybe?- I asked back, narrowing my eyes at her... It could also be the other way around, that she was so insistent in me flirting because she was projecting her own intentions... Was... Was Fable flirting with me then?
Agh! This was so confusing! Figuring out Fable was harder than solving world hunger!
Shaking my head from side to side, I decided to leave that aside for a while... At least until the fox faunus did the unexpected and actually allowed me to touch her fox tail... This was good, as I wanted to touch her foxtail. I think it was becoming quite clear from how articulate I was being about it.
I considered my options for a second and just went for it. -I’ll be back in sixty seconds- I said, running to my room to get my own brush, returning so fast you would believe I had a speed semblance of some sort. I was back there in exactly fifty-nine seconds. Only then I realized I hadn’t picked up my brush, but one from Berwyn... Huh... Well, I would cross that bridge when I came to it.
With her consent, I started grooming her tail... I wasn’t very good at it, but I wasn’t horrible either since I had a tail myself, so I knew how to make it so it wouldn’t hurt... So I was middle of the line more or less.
-It’s because it’s my first time, next one I will do better- I called out, unconsciously revealing that I was looking forward to the next time somewhere in the future...
It was just... So cute, so relaxing. Like petting a big, fluffy cloud which I had to resist the childish urge to bite for a second. No joke, I could have simply stayed there doing that for hours, but I knew I had called Fable out for a reason. So after some good ten minutes, I desisted and stashed the brush in my pocket.
The thing was filled to the brim with long, white strands of hair now though... Well, that would be hard to explain to Berwyn... Whatever.
Back to the strange seller, I had given Fable some space to express herself however she saw fit... I didn’t know if I wasn’t regretting that now. The guy stood still as a statue, glancing nervously as Fable circled around him. Clearly wanting to defend himself, but likely too intimidated by the fox to produce a proper response.
I was left speechless as well but quickly recovered when Fable moved her hand over to her sword... Uh... This was maybe a little more intense than what I was expecting... But for now, I wasn’t sure if this was Fable truly threatening the man, or merely playing the bad cop... Whatever the case, I would follow the game for a little while. Making sure that the girl didn’t get over her furry head and actually decided to hurt someone.
That would be bad. I had learned my lesson before, so I would bonk her and drag her ass back to haven if she tried something bad. I didn’t have my weapon tho... But I could improvise.
Hoping it didn’t have to come to that, I stood awkwardly between the fox girl and the now pale-looking man. Who was just now apologizing for... Something I guess, he was simply saying he was sorry and asking Fable to calm down.
-Now now... It’s not something so grave as to require such methods. Isn’t that right?- I said, staring Fable down for a couple seconds before turning my head towards Tangerino. -She’s not bluffing. You know? You should listen to what she says if you are lying... I’m not sure I can hold her back, she can get quite wild when angry-
Now even more pale than before, the guy gave a step back as he stumbled over his own words for a good while.
-Alright, alright! Yes, I lied... The bike is not in the best of conditions... So you shouldn’t force the transmission past fourth gear, else you may have trouble with the brakes... But all in all the thing works mostly fine!- Looking into his pockets, he got a hold of the keys and tossed them in my direction.
-If you think I’m scamming you, you can have a free ride around the city! No need to leave anything here with you. I trust you won’t steal a fucking bike from me if you are in Haven now... It was never your style either-
The man finally admitted his fault, bending over the pressure without much resistance... Huh... It seemed like Fable’s strategy had worked out in the end, I had to give credit where credit is due.
-Manners build trust- I simply said, throwing a thumbs-up in Tangerino’s direction before turning towards the bike. It didn’t have any helmet for us to wear, but we had aura anyway, and I doubted the man would have been prepared with a second helmet with ear-holes for Fable anyway.
-And yes. That sounds like a fair deal... You hopping in?- I asked the fox faunus, partly because I wanted to distract her from doing... Something to the guy.
Getting on the vehicle myself. I waited for the other woman to get herself seated before starting the engine. All seemed good till now. Once she was close enough, I would utter one small warning to her ears, low enough that only she could listen to me.
-Don’t do that... Threatening people, not even as a joke. Haven’s reputation is already bad as it is, okay, Fable?-
And with that, I turned around. Already planning a nice route in my head, nothing too wild. Just a small trip around town. No way that anything could go wrong, nope. Not at all. Just smoothly cruising and nice views for the both of us... At least, this was the plan.
