[attr="class","nikki102"]BUT IN THE END, IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY
[break]
[attr="class","nikki109"]Now that the imminent danger to her life was gone and the adrenaline of that edge of life or death struggle was fading, several things became clear. The first was that her vision was starting to tunnel and make it hard to see anything at the periphery. The second was that she was breathing raggedly, struggling to suck in enough air to make that tunnel vision fade. The third was that there was a warm dampness on parts of her torso, legs, and arms from the drying blood there. She still seemed to be bleeding, but not enough for it to be an immediate issue. The fourth was that the pain was dulled partially due to the lack of feeling in her arms and legs due to continued exertion, which introduced another issue of being forced to make sure her limbs cooperated. [break][break]
Her armor was dented and covered with remnants of dust of both kinds, dried blood, and the stuck on remnants of random internals that stuck to the armor with the blood itself. It was cracked and dented in many places, but still held together just enough to continue to be useful. A decade ago she would have felt some empathy towards those who opposed her, but as the years went on one thing that she had learned was that empathy was a finite resource and that wasting it only made you unable to give it to those who deserved it. [break][break]
There were certain people that her position obligated her to have empathy for, or this entire experiment in an alternative way of life failed. If she lacked the energy to deal with those people correctly, then she was no better than the uncaring oligarchy that she was fighting so hard to destroy. It was the thing that made this entire ruse guarantee her presence. If she didn’t respond to it in a way that maximized the chances of as many people she was in charge of protecting making it out of here alive, she was no different than the Council who chose who lived and who died based off of metrics of production and usefulness. It was no doubt why they chose an industrial center to make their point, assuming that Alina was like them and would sacrifice villages who were deemed not worth the risk. [break][break]
The fact that she could truthfully tell herself that this wasn’t the case meant that the last shreds of humanity inside of her weren’t gone yet. A small consolation, considering the methods used to maintain it, but a consolation nevertheless. She changed the communications channel to that within the city, and gave her orders. ”Focus on getting as many civilians as possible out. Leave the infrastructure to die if needed, we can rebuild that later on. Anyone gives you issues, point me in their direction and I’ll take care of it. I’ll take care of the sniper first.” [break][break]
A quick swap over to the channel of the incoming forces lent her the ability to give multiple orders to multiple groups at the same time. ”As you advance, defer to Sotnyk judgment as to when and where to fire. There are mines and booby traps within the city we’re working to disarm, so fire needs to be precise and not near any infrastructure. The entire front half of the city will be lightly occupied by our forces but will have some holdouts from the enemy. Expect more explosives near the border. Alina out.” [break][break]
It was hard getting the unity of purpose that she had to this point achieved, and it required a lot of sacrifices. Those that wanted numbers above all else were continuously angry at the caliber of fighter than Alina routinely ejected or at times killed herself. Good, strong, skilled and dedicated fighters were thrown out of the Iron Wolves or in extreme cases executed for not sticking to the mission. Usually this was due to lack of discipline, and the worst was caused by bloodlust. Being mentally weak didn’t mean you were useless, it just meant you were reassigned. Some people just couldn’t handle combat, and that was fine and well. It took five support personnel to support one grunt, and support needed dedicated leadership as well. [break][break]
Being physically weak wasn’t necessarily a dealbreaker either, given that artillery and related fields saw combat but were never expected to get up close and personal with the enemy to destroy them in close combat where that physical strength really mattered. Lack of training wasn’t an issue, and Alina was on the record in preferring people who didn’t get training anywhere else because they came in with less ego and were far more teachable than those who had preconceived notions on how to conduct combat. [break][break]
The heavyweights were needed to eliminate the most dangerous enemies on the field, and it was a waste of time to assign them the lesser ones if it detracted from their primary purpose which was to eliminate the threats that prevented the soldiers from being able to maneuver freely. Each one of the huntsmen Alina eliminated could have taken out dozens of Iron Wolves by themselves, but with all of them killed the Iron Wolves were left with the soldiers from the Council’s forces, which they would not only eliminate but eliminate quickly and without issue. [break][break]
The Council used their mercenaries to back up a huntsman and enable them to kill the highest value targets quickly so the Huntsmen could then wipe out the lesser enemies with their superior strength. The Revolutionary League used its soldiers as a second wave to completely and utterly overwhelm the field once the enemies out of their league were destroyed. Alina’s job was effectively over the second her men breached the front gate, which allowed her to expend all of her effort and all of her energy in doing her job and not worrying about chasing after enemies that weren’t worth her time. [break][break]
Those that were too bloodthirsty to wait their turn were worse than useless, they were actively detrimental. Those who couldn’t follow directions and stay in their lane were also worse than useless, and caused deaths early on. Those that caused the death of other Revolutionaries due to disobeying orders were killed, and those that risked it were expelled. Alina needed people who were reliable and would act in predictable ways when given the objectives they were meant to accomplish, and anyone who didn’t fit that mold were worse than useless to her because they would be impossible to trust. [break][break]
Here Alina was forced to do a bit more than should be reasonably expected of her due to the unique situation that required most of her Iron Wolves to be out of sight from Council forces until it was too late, but her work here was almost done. Russet had pointed out where the sniper was, and Alina had been moving in that direction for some time under some cover. The Hetman was never known for being mobile, and she knew better than to try. Russet’s attack had distracted them and allowed Alina enough time to make it to the area without being detected, and that was all that was really required. [break][break]
She might not be fast, but the faunus knew how to get around without being heard. Climbing up a building without being heard with the residual sounds of fighting and the artillery kicking up to blast open the front door was trivial. The sniper was holed up in a now abandoned townhouse building with a lot of windows, and those that weren’t being used were closed and locked. Smashing through one of them to let herself in was the only play available, given that repositioning would take too much time. [break][break]
The sniper was good, and she redirected the rifle and blasted a shot right at Alina’s check that forced her to hold out her arms to grasp the edges of the window to avoid being sent directly back down from whence she came. The second shot was dodged, even though the legs of the faunus felt more like jello than flesh at that point, and it was at that point that her opponent decided a melee weapon was better than the sniper in close quarters and pulled out a baton that arced with lightning dust while dropping the rifle on the ground. [break][break]
That suited Alina just fine, as she had ditched her rifle before starting the climb. The brunette Council dog seemed to think that Alina’s wounds and lack of aura would be enough to grant an advantage, but she was wrong. Left forearm went out to meet the impact of the lightning dust infused baton, and right forearm slammed into the chest of her enemy. The lightning dust arced through the metal armor quite nicely, and started to fry both of them. The shock of pain was enough to cause the brunette to move the baton away from the point of impact, which gave Alina an opening to charge forward on that backswing and tackle her enemy to the ground. The baton made contact again, but Alina just did the same trick again and used the weight of her body and gear to stay mounted and just continued slamming her elbow and forearm into the face of her enemy until aura shattered completely. One more forearm strike, and there was a shift in the fight. [break][break]
In the moment of that aura shattering, Alina used the pain and disorientation of that in addition to the last strike afterwards to grasp the neck of her opponent and yank backwards so that the faunus could get underneath her opponent with her legs wrapped around the brunette’s hips and able to lock in a guillotine choke. The Council dog’s head was underneath Alina’s left arm, with the arm wrapped around the head and under the neck. The palm of Alina’s left hand was on her chest, and the right hand grasped the left and yanked upwards as hard as she could with her arms and downwards as hard as she could with her legs until there was a loss of consciousness. [break][break]
Once that loss of consciousness came, Alina kicked away the baton and got off of her opponent to get on her back and apply a rear naked choke so that her right arm encircled the neck and the left hand was clasping very gently at the moment to ensure that there was enough leeway for the brunette to regain consciousness and not die. Once she did, Alina tightened the hold enough to be very uncomfortable and whispered in their ear. [break][break]
”You’re alive because I think you might be useful. The moment I think that’s not true, it’s over. Nod your head if you understand.” The brunette nodded, then… or at least tried to. ”Good. Now you’re going to give me some actionable information, and if any of it is wrong our conversation ends. If it’s correct and useful, I’ll let you limp out of here with your life. So start talking.” [break][break]

According to Alina, rescuing people was the top priority, so Marion cracked her knuckles and started working towards it as best as she could. Thinking of ways to crack down the little puzzle she had in front of her.
Marion could be a lot of things. Reckless, immoral, overconfident, absolutely uncaring of social norms... This didn’t necessarily mean she was stupid. Nor that she was unable to play things slow and safe when the alternative was walking blindly into a trap.
-Alright, boys and boyettes! I need fucking lights there, there, and... There!- Marion called out, signaling a couple points for her soldiers to start setting things up. In part because Marion was tired of being unable to see shit. But also because some of the hostages were definitely not faunus, and she didn’t want them tripping over a landmine or something.
Once everything was illuminated, the blonde walked forward herself, paying attention to every small sign of trouble in her way. Dodging some traps here and there, some tripwire on the corner... All along waymarking her path with some simple tools.
A hammer, some nails, and a rope along the ground, as long as they walked over the rope, no traps or hidden nasties could do them harm. It was a slow and tiresome procedure, but that’s just life. And Marion knew very well that just flying off the handle would only work against her.
After all, not taking adequate precautions was what led her to be captured by Alina in the first place... Not that she actually regretted that, in hindsight. As much as both the work and her boss were a pain in the ass sometimes... Yet, she had grown a bit fond of it all.
-H-halt!- A small man yelled from between the hostages. Holding what appeared to be some kind of detonator in his hand. And Marion didn’t appreciate having someone threatening both her and her new source of income/entertainment just when she was starting to actually appreciate it. -If you come any closer, I will...!-
An ice dagger to his hand froze the entirety of his arm up to the shoulder. Whatever he was thinking of doing with his little device, he wouldn’t be able to do now. He opened his mouth once again, but Marion was not in the mood, so a regular dagger to his head silenced him for good.
-Well... Moving on- Said the blonde with a shrug as she finally reached the cluster of hostages and began untying them. She made sure to alert them not to make any sudden moves.
-You... You are Alina’s osaul, right...? What happened? What’s of the huntsmen?-
-What do you think? All dead, now everybody, form a neat line because we are getting the hell outta here- Her words seemed to immediately lift everyone’s spirits. Smiles galore all around her, along with other expressions of praise and gratitude.
Despite herself, Marion felt the tiniest slivers of emotion stir in her withered, rotten heart...
Ugh... Icky. Well, since she was apparently helping those people, she better get it done quickly.
-Yeah, yeah... I know I’m awesome... Now get those asses moving! Follow the line, and nothing should happen to you, deviate from the path, and I’m not responsible for what happens-
And with that, the civilians started slowly but steadily evacuating the mine. Watching them all go escorted by the iron wolves, Marion stopped the last of them to ask a couple questions. Specifically, if there were more hostages and where they could be... Sadly, it seemed like everyone was in the dark about that.
Not perfect, but good enough. Taking out the radio, Marion sent a general message to the rest of the Kozak forces.
-Best girl Marion here. We managed to get a pretty big group of civilians out of the mines. And we are escorting them back to the surface, so use your eyes before shooting. Infantry, take care of evacuations once they are out of the city... No clue if there are more hostages deeper into the mine, but be careful if you go in-
Hopefully, that should take care of things... The army would start reclaiming the city back on short notice, so once they handed down the hostages, Marion would be free to continue exploring the place.

Rolling for Nina Problem #1 Find a Way to Evacuate the Civilians Safely (Social 11)
Post by Russet Bruin on Nov 6, 2021 13:32:16 GMT -5
Finding the mine was a lot easier, having reconvened with the rest of the Iron Wolves. Notably Marion, who seemed to be doing much better now that she wasn't fighting Nevermores and jeep gunners anymore. Russet fell in line pretty quickly, taking up a rear position to keep eyes and ears peeled for more enemy mercenaries.
Once they reached the mine, though, her priorities quickly turned from combat to rescue. Seemed most of the civilians were holed up in the front of the mine, mostly just blocked in by traps. The explosives, Russet gathered, were deeper in.
A risky and dangerous place to be, for sure.
But she had a feeling there were people down there too. It would have been pretty stupid if the mercenaries had left everyone in a relatively easy spot to break out of- no doubt, anybody who seemed fit or fiery enough to try to bust out was down there, where they couldn't leave so easily.
Seemed Marion had most of the evacuation handled. That freed her up to scout ahead.
Not alone, though- she called out to a pair of Wolves helping guide the freed hostages past the traps and obstacles towards the entrance. One pink-haired guy with a crossbow, and a turtle faunus brunette with a baseball bat- part of her team, though since taking on the role of Sinopia's Osaul, it had been a while since she'd actually gotten to work with them in the field. "Nikita! Ursula! Give me a hand, would ya? Shine a light down the shaft, and give me some covering fire, just in case." She wasn't too worried about tripping the explosives by mistake with Nikita sharpshooting- dust ammunition or gunpowder would be pretty dicey, but she figured his bolts should be safe enough.
The two quickly shifted gears, moving to positions with an urgency that did her heart proud.
And with them in place, she turned over her shoulder to address Marion. "Scouting the rest of the mine! Nobody comes in 'til I'm done, okay? We don't want Russet bits everywhere, heh." A wink to somewhat dull the morbid half-joke, and she was off.
...She really hoped there wouldn't be any Russet bits anywhere outside of... well... Russet.
Carefully, she leapt to the opposite wall of the shaft. Whatever lift there was, was gone it seemed, so she at least didn't have to worry about dodging past that. Or having to rely on her flashlight the whole way down- the light from Ursula's heavier-duty lantern was helping marvelously.
Gingerly, she scaled her way down the wall, dodging around the explosives as best as she could. She'd have to come back for those, when everyone was evacuated. For now, though, she concentrated on clearing the less kaboomy traps- tripwires and rudimentary spikes, mostly, just things to prevent anyone from escaping.
Luckily, they hadn't counted on someone with her special set of skills- dispatching the traps was child's play for a talented machinist such as herself, and actually reaching the traps was simple enough, given her much less limited range of motion than the poor schmucks below.
Schmucks that, fortunately, she could see down below. It seemed she was wrong about why they were down there, though- it wasn't the strongest-willed, toughest, hostages. It was a handful of children. Presumably stuck down at the bottom of the shaft so their parents wouldn't try to make a break for it. Despicable. A new low, even for the Council's dogs.
"You guys like superheroes?" She grinned down at the kids, trying her best to calm them down. Which was a bit of a feat, considering she was walking down a sheer mine shaft, with a rifle. She slung it over her shoulder, though, as she neared the bottom. It was quick work finding the rest of the traps, keeping them in place. Now it was just the bombs to worry about, but at least she was fairly sure they were stable enough not to blow without reason.
"C'mon, let's get you guys out of here." She reached to her earpiece, addressing the general channel. "Found more hostages at the bottom of the mine. About sixteen or seventeen, all young kids. Bringing them up now. Russet out." It wasn't going to be easy, but nothing ever was.
Especially when it came to mines.
Why was it always mines?
She was really starting to hate being underground...
Whatever. She could worry about that later. For the time being, she picked up a pair of the kids, holding them as securely as she could in her arms, and a third clinging to her back, all gripped as tightly as she could manage with her Semblance.
"Now don't be scared- I'm not letting you guys fall." And sure enough, she didn't- it was a lot more grueling than she'd expected, but compared to her Iron Wolves training, it was hardly anything she couldn't handle. Like mountain-climbing with weighted backpacks. Tough, but endurable.
Reaching the top, she passed the kids off to her team, before heading back down for another few. Before too long, everyone was safe and accounted for, and all that was left, as they went with the other evacuees, was Russet staring down into the abyss by herself.
Or well.
Almost by herself. The weird shark girl was back.
And seemed pretty focused on the mine shaft. Was she some kind of demolitions expert or something? Hopefully she was. Russet wasn't too keen on dealing with all those bombs. Or the weird sounds coming from down there...
That...
Probably wasn't a good sign.

NINA RIVERS
Hark now, hear the sailors cry, Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
Following Marion was a good idea.
Nina had already come to terms with the fact that she didn't really know what she was doing. But the blonde did! And that was doing a pretty damn good job of keeping her alive and well lately. So she saw no reason to stop following her lead any time soon. Worst case scenario, they got stuck chased by jeeps again.
Luckily, it seemed they weren't playing that game twice. They found the hostages pretty easily, and the sole guard was dealt with... perhaps a little uncomfortably easily. She still wasn't entirely fond of how ruthless Marion was with these people. Sure, they were doing the wrong thing, and they were pretty bad people for doing it, but they were still people. There wasn't any need to finish the guy off after freezing his arm. It just felt unnecessary.
No sense worrying about that until she was out of this mess, though.
Approaching the mine, she was hit by a whiff of something faint, but distinctly familiar. Grimm. They didn't seem to be moving any closer, but they weren't exactly fleeing either- Grimm didn't do that.
It immediately set her on edge, which she tried to turn into useful energy, helping guide some of the hostages out to safety. But she couldn't displace the thought from her mind... It smelled like Grimm all around the mine. There was something to that.
Even as she helped the civilians out of the mind, her brow remained burrowed, as she pored over any possible explanations for the prominence of the scent. It wasn't out of the realm of possibility that it was merely a one-off occurrence, caused by the stress and panic and fighting. But she didn't believe that was sufficient- not for a scent this thick and dense.
Not to mention the Nevermore Chicks, and the fully-grown Nevermore. She'd noticed a few other Chicks since they'd arrived, but thought little of it. Maybe she should have thought that through a little better.
There was definitely a common thread, though.
Linking the Nevermores to this weird feeling...
Then it hit her like a ton of bricks.
The civilians themselves. Being taken captive and tossed into a pitch-dark mine was about as stressful and traumatizing a thing as she could imagine, short of life or limb. Being told by the guards that some crazy terrorist was on her way to burn them to cinders couldn't have helped. There was a good chance that what she was feeling was something bigger.
A psychometric imprint.
Locational memory. It wasn't quite anything like a full-on Blight yet, but it was on its way to becoming one soon. At the moment, it was just a shining beacon for Grimm to gather and wreak havoc, but still unfocused enough that they weren't localized to a single point yet. That was why they were scattered, but searching.
The scent was growing stronger.
Coming from the mine itself. She headed back in, shuffling past the last of the evacuees, stepping right up to the precipice of the shaft. She was caught up in her work enough to not enough notice the Kozak girl staring at her. Sure enough, there were tell-tales signs of the approaching swarm; dust kicking loose, and small cracks in the carved-out mineshaft walls.
Gingerly, she summoned up a bit of water from her Semblance, tentatively releasing it into the void, letting the Aura-tinged water drop onto the ground below.
She hadn't really aimed for it, but it splattered across the biggest bundle of bombs.
And not even seconds later, a writhing mass of Centinels and Creeps burst forth, swallowing up the bombs in their attempt to have at the Semblance-infused water splashed across them- Nina couldn't tell how deep their tunnels were, but it definitely seemed like the explosives were a lot deeper underground. Not really a good thing, but it was a problem they could deal with later, after all was said and done. At any rate, they were buried in the Centinel tunnels, so if they did go off, it would at worst collapse a bit of the mine shaft, as opposed to actually hurting anybody.
Now, though, there was a new issue to deal with- while the ground-dwelling Grimm had taken care of the bombs, it wasn't like they had just showed up for a good deed. They were hunting; and Nina had a creeping feeling that the recently freed captives were their targets.
Taking the pink-haired girl by the wrist, she bolted back out of the mine, towards the others. "Swarm! Keep the civilians safe!" Not her finest wordsmithing, but she was a bit too concerned with stopping the horde of Grimm than taking the proper channels for things. Blurting out a warning was about the best she could do to get Marion's attention.
And once she had it, she turned back to the approaching mass of burrowing Grimm. Drawing them above ground was a good start. She gripped her trident and readied herself for yet another fight.

[attr="class","nikki109"]”What do you want to know?” was the gasp out in response.
Alina had been able to stop and absorb the radio chatter that was going on. Bombs were in the mines and so was a good chunk of the town’s residents, but reports of numbers was much lower than she had expected. ”We cleared out the mines and people from the mines. Where’s the rest?” there was a slight pause, then, before Alina continued. ”I’ll make a deal with you. My main force is breaking through the front door right now. If you give me specific enough information to save a few hundred more civilians I’ll personally make sure you make it out of here. You have my word.” [break][break]
At times like this, things like reputation had an impact. The conflict had been going on for so long that there were many stories going on about her, but one thing that was pretty firmly established even among members of the Council was that the leader of the Revolutionary League kept her promises, both good and bad, as best as she could. The numbers of enemy combatants she simply let walk after making a deal with them weren’t insubstantial at this point, and stories of those had no doubt spread to the rank and file. After all, there were no officers to stop the spread of information and the mercenary companies sent out into the field talked to each other. Why would they not? Their goal was to make as much money as possible while staying alive, and anything that increased their odds of doing so was worth it. All she needed to do was appeal to that instinct of wanting to stay alive, and provide a clear and easy path to do so. [break][break]
That reputation paid off in that moment, and Alina got the information she needed. Maybe a little bit too late, but she got it in time to at least make an attempt. ”Attention all units. Report of civilians tied up within the factory, next to the machinery with explosives attached and set on a timer. Report says the timer will go off in less than five minutes. Be careful on the approach and verify that there’s something in there worth saving. I’ll take care of the swarm, out.” [break][break]
The faunus released the human she had in her grip, then. ”I’m taking the dust. You pick up the rifle. We’re killing the Grimm next to the mine, and if you fuck around I’ll make you need a full facial transplant to go outside again. Focus the centinels.” [break][break]
Centinels and creeps were no issue whatsoever, and the precision of a sniper rifle and fire dust made it a trivial endeavor to take care of the Centinels while the remaining Iron Wolves gunned down the creeps. The beautiful thing about fire dust was that Alina’s overall mastery of dust made it really easy to just convert it to a use similar in concept but much weaker in intensity and power to her own semblance. What it lacked in power, though, was made up just enough in sheer volume Alina was able to use from the dust stash up in this building of both fire and lightning dust. The funding for this operation must have been absolutely absurd, and if all that investment led to a bust it would be a while before another one on this scale could be conducted again. [break][break]
The enemy combatant complied, and whether it was due to lack of choice or not didn’t exactly matter because the dust enhanced bullets that sniper rifle was pumping out fucking hurt and it wasn’t like Alina herself had the necessary skill in order to use the damned thing. Furthermore, it was clear at this point that the Hetman was running on fumes and the extra help was very much needed if not particularly appreciated. The Iron Wolves were more than capable as a small unit to take out both centinels and creepers, the only issue was keeping the civilians safe while remaining safe themselves. They could wipe them out, yeah, but not fast enough to save everyone and not flexible enough to herd scared and traumatized civilians into the right directions not to be eaten at the same time they were fighting to stay alive themselves. Hey! Grimm! Yeah, that... That kinda was to be expected considering the number of hostages the council forces had. How lucky it was then that they managed to get pretty much all the hostages from the mine before the Grimm decided to show their ugly faces.
It was a good thing that Russet stepped in to get the people deeper inside the mine. As bad as the Grimm were, they at least only managed to find them when pretty much everyone was on the outside already.
It was way easier to fight subterranean Grimm in the open, where they cannot make holes under you or drop from the fucking ceiling. So Marion quickened her pace and made sure to get all of the hostages out before the nasty monsters could get them.
It was all about raining fire on them from that point on. Soon enough, the blonde was out of ammo, but there were a shit ton of soldiers around her, so she just walked by taking sidearms and knives from their belts to help cull down the horde.
Marion whistled when a hail of dust-infused bullets started doing short work of the Grimm. She didn’t know they had some decent snipers among them besides Russet. But it was a welcomed sight nonetheless. Once Alina stepped in, Marion knew she had outlived her usefulness in that position.
Handpicking a small team of iron wolves. The former bandit sent quick orders for them to start evacuating the fleeing civilians in an orderly fashion... Or at least as orderly as you can while being persecuted by Grimm in a combat environment.
Speaking of civilians. If Alina’s info was accurate, there were even more of them trapped inside the factory... Which was pretty damn huge, so they needed someone nimble to scout the whole thing and see if those fabled hostages existed. And considering that being good at running was one of Marion’s saving graces...
So off she went! Hopefully to not set up any explosives herself and blow the whole thing up!
Finding the building was easy enough if you had eyes. But the place had remained mostly intact from the battle, so Marion had to find a suitable entrance and a way to sneak out the civilians if they existed. She could probably climb a couple stories to get in via a window. She doubted everyone else could.
But soon enough, she was inside. Managing to sneak through an open window. And after a couple nail-biting moments, she found what she was looking for. A few groups and clusters of separated civilians tied up and surrounded by armed explosives...
-Marion here... Found civilians inside the factory. The bomb threat is real, so is the timer. We need bomb experts here ASAP. This takes top priority- She hurriedly spoke in her intercom. They had around 3 and a half and four minutes left...
She approached some of the explosives set in the main gate. Took one good look at them and realized they were too complicated for her to even attempt disarming with any real hope of success.
-Be careful with the main entrance. There’s a nasty bomb there... Could interfere with evacuation... Where the fuck is that explosives team!- She frustratedly called into her comm. Hoping they would have enough time to save, if not all, then at least most people trapped there.
Else the roof would certainly fall down once the bomb went off, and that would be game over for everyone, including the former bandit. Considering Marion wasn’t immune to having tonnes of metal and brick burying her alive.
Yes, she may still manage to make a run for it and survive, but she hoped it wouldn't have to come to that... Welp. Don’t ever let it be said that Marion’s life wasn’t an exciting one!

NINA RIVERS
Hark now, hear the sailors cry, Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
The cavalry had arrived.
Nina's sigh of relief was heavy as the first of the Centinels fell to flames and bullets from behind her. But it wasn't over yet. The Creeps were still a menace, even with the Centinels being split off by Alina and her sniper. At least this was something Nina could confidently do- she was no good against human opponents, but up against Grimm, she was in her element. Her Semblance poured forth and flooded the holes faster than Creeps could burrow, the whirlpool-like tendrils yanking them above ground, where they were brought down by the Iron Wolves and her own trident.
Within seconds, the swarm was wiped out, and Alina's new orders finally registered in her brain.
Factory.
Civilians trapped inside, with explosives on a timer. As soon as she was sure that the civilians they'd just freed were safe, she sprinted off, following Marion's yellow-ish silhouette. As expected, the blonde got away from her pretty quickly, but she could still follow her scent trail to what she assumed was the factory, stepping up towards the entrance just as Marion made her announcement.
It was good that she did- Nina was about nine inches from snapping a trip-wire at the front door. Carefully, she stepped back and looked around for more.
The situation suddenly reminded her of her time spent in Vacuo, on the coastal cliffs. Stalking and observing the lesser Grimm in the area. If she moved too quickly, or too carelessly, she ran the risk of knocking rocks loose, or snapping a stray twig. Which meant alerting her subject, and that never meant good things.
So, with just as much care, she stepped over the tripwire, moving as slowly as she could afford to, given the urgency of the situation. Once inside, it was apparent that the civilians were in danger. Tied to posts, and unable to even try to flee. Not that fleeing was a good idea- ignoring the primary bomb in the middle of the building, there were several smaller devices scattered around, to blow the whole place sky-high at the first sign of trouble.
She had to wonder if maybe Alina's methods, brutal as they could be, really were the appropriate response to the Council.
When the Council ordered things like this... Maybe they deserved to burn. She frowned. That wasn't something she wanted to believe in- Mistral was full of good people, trying their best. And even if some bad eggs were in positions of power, there were surely other solutions that didn't involve so much death and bloodshed. She refused to believe that violence could ever solve violence.
Whatever the case, she had a job to do. Delicately, she made her way to the first cluster of civilians she could see. Noting the timer on the bomb, she decided that there probably wasn't much time for lengthy explanations. "Here to help," would have to suffice.
Spotting the blonde on the rafters above, Nina waved a hand to her, before biting the ropes binding these first few people to the support beam. Once they were free, she didn't give them the chance to run off and accidentally set off any bombs on their own- with her Semblance, and a healthy chunk of her Aura, she lifted them up, two at a time, in a flying whirlpool of water, maneuvering it up to Marion's position.
It was the safest way out she could think of- none but the most paranoid of trappers would have bothered to rig explosives in the air, or on the ceiling, considering Alina's limited mobility. They would have expected her to waltz through the front door. This way, they could make their way out the way Marion had come in, presumably.
It wasn't the fastest process, or even the most effective considering the time it took, but she managed to get the front of the factory clear, with a little help, as the final few seconds of the timer ticked down. A quick glance to the back showed that someone else must have managed to get everyone else, so she turned tail and bolted for the door, careful to dodge past, around, and over any of the traps still left in place.
She didn't stop running until she reached the other side of the street, where it seemed the civilians had congregated.
Didn't seem like they were going to be able to save the factory, but at least the people in it were fine. That was what really mattered, right?
Now they just had to find a way home with their new friends...

"Huh? Hey! Watch it!"
Russet wasn't used to being this manhandled, but the shark girl seemed damn insistent on yanking her away from the mine before she could really do anything else. It was bad enough this chick just threw some crazy-ass magic water down the mine shaft, but now she was running away? What the fuck was she even doing!?
Turns out, she was drawing out a giant pile of Grimm. Russet's eyes went wide as fuck at the wriggling horde. "Ohhh, I hate Grimm... I hate Grimm, I hate Grimm, man, I hate Grimm..." Why did it always have to be giant bug monsters...?
At least there weren't any spider Grimm.
She hoped.
Making it back out into the open was smart, though. As soon as sharkface let her go, she aimed her rifle at the nearest Creep and started blasting, until she'd run through the clip. Tossing the now-useless rifle to the side, she reached for her ankle-sheath, pulling her knife just as a Centinel crashed into her, pinning her between a rock and a slimy multi-legged place.
Her good fortune came in the form of sniper-fire from off in the distance. She was pretty damn sure none of her guys were posted that way, towards the gate. And she'd never seen Alina pick up a rifle, outside of training the Iron Wolves. So something weird was going on there.
But she wasn't going to stop and puzzle that one out- whoever the mysterious stranger was, she was just grateful they'd shot the Grimm off of her, without sticking a bullet in her head. From the sound of the gun, it seemed to be the same rifle that was popping shots at Alina earlier, so maybe the boss really did take up a rifle and a vantage point.
Whatever the case, the brief distraction gave her time to spot another fallen mercenary's weapon littering the ground- looked like a shotgun. Good enough for her. She was still upset her Tinderbox was waterlogged... Hopefully they'd be making their escape via dry land on the way out.
They weren't escaping any time soon, though.
First they had to free everyone stuck in a factory somewhere. What the hell was wrong with the Council? Acting like some greasy cowboy villain twirling a mustache next to the train tracks, with his hogtied hostage. The whole thing reeked of desperation. They should have just called it quits after Alina wrecked their city, without even trying. She was the strongest, most powerful, person in Remnant, nobody stood a chance against her, and these nobodies weren't any different.
She sped off, towards where Marion was posted up, and quickly found the factory. Not trusting the front entrance, she decided to just climb up and over it, onto the roof, then to the other side, before climbing down onto the back wall and busting out a window. Sure enough, there were a ton of people in there, as advertised. More than she could individually lift out, at any rate. Luckily, she had come prepared for this mission- ever since the mining expedition, she had started carrying a roll of rope in her pack, just in case of emergencies. And this seemed like the right kind of emergency to break it out- tying it off on a sturdy-looking vent fixture on the roof, she dropped the rope down into the factory, and set to work untying the civilians and guiding them around the bombs towards the rope to freedom.
Once everyone was gathered up, she scaled the wall and waited for the first climber to make his way up. Up the rope, then moving it out of the window, and sliding down the rope to the ground below. Russet at the top, she was able to recover the rope and allow everyone to escape as quickly and efficiently as possible, down to the last few people- an elderly couple and a little boy- who she did end up carrying out herself, in two trips.
Seemed like someone else was doing a good job handling the front of the building, so she let them do that, and just focused on getting her rescued civilians out of sight. With the timer ticking down, she really didn't want to be anywhere near that blast, so she brought everyone to the other side of the street, back towards where they'd rescued everyone from the mine shaft. Now with everyone together, they'd be easier to defend. She made a quick call to the Iron Wolves over her earpiece, as the second group began to meet them where they were, lead by the weird blue-haired girl.
"Factory's been evacuated! Everybody's accounted for, and moving into safer position. Area seems clear of hostiles too. Awaiting further instruction, over."

Attempting DM Problem 13.75: Save the Back Half of the Factory Without Setting Off the Bombs (Obstacle 8) Using Skill: E Specialized Semblance + HEROISM Roll: 4 + 10 = 14 (SUCCESS)
The explosives went off soon after the civilians were evacuated, and the way they were arranged made sure the entire building collapsed on itself. Carefully placed charges ensured that the machinery inside exploded into shrapnel large and fast enough to tear anyone unfortunate enough to be nearby to pieces, and even at a distance the chance of getting impaled through most of your torso was a huge risk. Luckily enough, though, there was nobody left inside the factory to be hit by that shrapnel.
Other bombs went off throughout the town of Dymytrov, though none with anywhere close to the concentration. Firebombs in places of residence, the remnants of explosives that the subterranean Grimm did not eat up, and of course the ones inside of the subterranean Grimm that exploded underneath the city and caused shifts in the earth as they did.
Most of the escape vessels were uncontested, and only a few at the end were destroyed or captured as the bigger issue was to assess damage and to move people before fissures in the ground from the submerged explosions caused any real damage to life and limb. The last one was used to fulfill Alina’s promise to the sniper to get her back to the Council in one piece, but she had only made that promise to. Everyone on the wall who fled immediately was long gone by that point, so everyone left were the stubborn idiots who stayed until the end.
It was blocked with weighted nets from leaving, and Alina and a team of Iron Wolves went in and gunned down the majority of those inside right where they stood. By the time the boat left it only had a skeleton crew barely able to run the damn thing, which was the only way the Hetman could ensure that the sniper survived the way back. Well, that and shooting some of them in the leg. You didn’t need to stand in order to steer, they gave the guy a chair. Confiscating the weapons aside from the sniper also helped, but also the leg shooting. It was hard to overpower someone and kill them with a bullet hole in your leg.
To nobody’s surprise, there was only one person who was alive when that ship made it back to Argus. The brutality was so over the top that the Council couldn’t suppress all news related to the incident, and the lone survivor who managed to make it out. It was the only way to not be hanged for collaborating with the enemy, after all. People did what they had to do in order to survive.
On the side of the Revolutionary League, the anger was almost entirely directed at the Council and they had done well enough to stave off talk of rebellion or inadequacy in response. The hit to production and mining hurt, and there would be metal shortages for the foreseeable future, but morale remained high and if anything relative productivity went up as the people of Dymytrov now had a personal stake in the war effort.
The casualties were minor for what they could have been, but every family at least knew someone who died in the assault on the town. What the Council hit in production would be made up in the long term, if the League survived long term, with the sheer targeted hatred of this town and the surrounding area coalescing into staunch League allies for the foreseeable future. These were the men and women who were going to make the bombs and artillery that rained down upon the Council, and they were going to take extra care to make sure they did as much damage as possible.
