The initial field of sixty-four contestants was narrowed down to thirty-two. This was the second round of combat in the tournament, and each participant who made it this far has one match that was broadcast all across the Kingdom earlier that day. This was the first round where preparation for a specific opponent was possible for anyone, even if one was against a wild card who had not participated in the tournament in previous years. This was the round where strategies could be studied, and strategy made to counter the skills that their opponent displayed in their first-round victory. This was also the second match that both contestants will fight in the first day ‘Blitz’ where the field of contestants is narrowed significantly.
The rules for this tournament itself were simple, the fight went on until one of the two entrants was either knocked off of the arena, their aura was fully depleted, or conceded the match. If both participants are knocked off of the arena at the same time, then the first one to get their entire body back on the arena itself is declared the winner. If two people’s aura drops at the same time, the match is considered a draw and a rematch is scheduled at the next available open time slot to declare a definitive winner. There have never been two draws in a row, so it is up in the air what would happen if that were to occur. Each participant started the match approximately fifteen meters away from each other on opposite ends of the arena, and the match started when the announcer gave the command.
Sanctum Academy was the main combat school in the region and the most respected when it came to producing the most candidates for Haven Academy, but it was not the only feeder school in the area. Indeed, there were two other primary combat schools that sent members in the region as well: Arcadia and Forge Academies. There were other wild cards as well, because no one in the age range was declined if they could pass the preliminary rounds to make it to the final roster for the tournament, but nobody expected these wild cards to really get anywhere. These spots were left open for people who lived outside the cities like the tribes of nomads who often had combat skills fighting against Grimm but no formal education or verifiable background to get admission to these primary combat schools. Nevertheless, it was the wish of Haven Academy that spots for these people opened up… but it was clear that the crowd favored the ‘home team’ as it were who had spent the last few years training to achieve their dreams of being a huntsman or huntress.
The fighting area itself is white concrete measuring approximately forty meters by forty meters raised about five feet in the air. The concrete itself is scuffed and shows signs of use, because it was on this area that all previous tournaments were fought on. The damage dealt in previous years was repaired, sure, but signs of that repair still remain. The area around the fighting area is typical of a sports stadium, with rows and levels of seating arranged in a circle around the main event. Up in the air, there were also cameras rigged to rails in order to track and broadcast the action on a four-sided television screen above the fighting area to spectators even in the worst seats. The Mistral Regional Tournament was very much an event that attracted a large crowd and was one time of the year where people from many different villages and cities outside of the capital came together to watch the next generation of huntsmen in action.
The two names had flashed up on the display alongside the official images for both Flower Fiorella from Sanctum Academy and Jasper Smoke from Arcadia Academy, and both participants were almost ready to step out into the ring and make their grand entrance into the second round of the 15th Mistral Regional Tournament. Aura meters were also on full display next to the images of both of their faces, with each one starting at 100 and going down in real time as each individual started to suffer damage. Both contestants also had an aura meter on their person as well, and it was their choice whether to use it and where to put it on their person if they did intend to use it for the fight!
For those watching on the screen, the audio from the announcer’s desk was subtitled on the screen. For those watching at home or with the audio in, they would instead hear the following:
”Now this is an interesting matchup! Darcy, can you run down what’s known about these two competitors?”[/i]
”Absolutely, Skye. Jasper Smoke is the number five student coming from Arcadia Academy, and made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament last year. He specializes in ranged combat with dual pistols, and his semblance basically allows him to jump really high up, which combined with his agility means he hopped around shooting from pistols completely out of range of his first round opponent! His opponent in this match is Flower Fiorella from Sanctum Academy whose semblance lets her transform her entire body into metal.”
”Both of these competitors has shown exceptional accuracy and skill with their ranged weapons, but Flower’s semblance allows her to fight in melee as well and take considerable amounts of damage. What she hasn’t shown thus far, however, is mobility. Her first match she hardly moved a muscle the entire match, and while durability may very well help her out in this match it is also very possible that Jasper will just be able to outlast the transformation with his superior mobility and then win when Flower is unable to use her semblance.”
”You can never count out a Sanctum Academy graduate, though, because if there’s anything that we’ve learned these past few years it’s that they always seem to find a way.”
