[break][attr="class","nikki102"]BUT IN THE END, IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY
[attr="class","nikki109"]It seemed like the Council forces were having trouble keeping up. Alina didn’t know whether that was good or bad, frankly, because it depended on how much they were doing the same thing she was doing. [break][break]
The Dragon wasn’t dead yet, and after an initial flurry of attacks to force it on the backfoot it seemed like the thing was just running rampant. Carmim was barely managing to stay alive at this point, and it didn’t seem that anything that was being done was doing much of anything to help. The faunus could see the stark white bone layer of armor start to thicken and widen, and it seemed like the monster would have its original armor back very soon. She had a golden opportunity to just try and smash the back of the monster’s armor open and expose the bone before it regenerated as the Dragon wasn’t focused on her in the slightest and the Grimm around her were still being taken care of by the rank and file… [break][break]
But she hesitated. If she succeeded and the monster was killed right then, what would happen? The Hetman didn’t know exact aura numbers, but she could gauge it pretty well. The Golden Wings were near full, and the only people who expended any amount of aura in that first push were Carmim, the Hellebore heiress, and herself. It would happen too fast for the broad strokes escape plan to function, and while she was one hundred percent sure the mercenaries inside would be killed without issue if needed she was much less sure she would be able to walk out without immediate extraction available outside of it. [break][break]
Any single one of them could be killed individually without issue most likely, but they were too spread out for Alina to ensure she got everyone at once. She would benefit from an extended fight, but would be unable to make one happen. It was possible their auras had improved in durability since last report, as well, which was something that ordinarily wouldn’t matter – because the fact remained that Alina could take multiple hits from even their strongest semblance blasts and the faunus was willing to bet her life that none of them could withstand one of hers. The issue was that if any of them survived, Alina would be in a very vulnerable spot with having to expend so much aura and focus on directing and controlling the flow and intensity of her fire to that degree. She was willing to bet her own life on her ability to do that, but if she was wrong it wouldn’t just be her life she had gambled away. Dodging was easier than withstanding by an order of magnitude, and with so many targets and the inability to hit them in the same instant one or more was far too likely to get lucky. [break][break]
She needed to conserve her aura. It was easy to expend next to nothing just doing enough to incinerate some of the Alphas and Ursai Major who came out of the gunk and to fire off flashy but not full power shots to make it look like she was doing something while conserving her aura for the fight that would come in after this. Trying to keep an eye on what the fuck everyone around her was doing to avoid being encircled, though, she didn’t have enough attention to completely make sure her attacks would have no effect. Much to her annoyance, she put a little bit too much heat on the last blast that she fired at the Dragon and there was a superheated spot in the scales that could be exploited if others were paying attention. That was annoying, but it would go away within a few seconds as the heat dissipated because Alina went out of her way to not hit the same spot consecutively. [break][break]
This was going to be an awkward juggling act. The Dragon couldn’t die before putting up a legitimate fight, but at the same time if she delayed too much it was definitely possible that it just killed everyone there and then they had no way to defeat it later. Alina was confident at the time that she could make it work, but with the monster seemingly being weaker than she had expected – or the Council huntsman stronger – she wasn’t quite so sure she had enough control to make sure this went well. They needed a bit more time to make sure that all the Council vehicles and artillery in reserve were accounted for and that the League’s own hidden artillery was calibrated to destroy it all should it be necessary. [break][break]
If she couldn’t guarantee that everyone with the power to make this a deathtrap died instantly in case of the initial plan being a failure, the next best option was to make it a deathtrap first. Indecision would lead to a lag in judgment that would lead to Alina having a few more extra seconds to finish the job, and even if they hard committed immediately… any who peeled off to help the back line wouldn’t be a threat to the Hetman any longer. They’d be out for too long to interfere with the escape. And if they all decided to stay and ignore the backline… well, if Alina breathed after that then that would be the easiest thing in the world to propagandize. The Council huntsmen all gathered together in the same place who didn’t even care enough to attempt to make sure their rank and file survived and sacrificed them all in such a public manner at another failed assassination attempt. [break][break]
To ensure that Sienna wasn’t found out while scouting those locations, Alina intentionally let some Grimm through that were on trajectories towards Council forces. The small amounts she let go would eventually build up into a major threat if left unattended, especially the Alphas who were mobile enough to evade even the heavy equipment the Council brought along for long enough to get behind the lines of the more inexperienced mercenary lines. They had prepared to the best of their ability, but without help from a huntsman level combatant pretty regularly they would be overwhelmed and that would be pretty fucking helpful right about now to secure escape for later – as long as the Council mercs lasted long enough to die in good spots where their ammunition could be recovered for use later. Maybe some of the equipment, too, especially from the Hellebore mercenaries. It’d be really good to get an intact kit to modify for their own purposes, because the Hellebore contingents they had killed in the past died with their gear largely destroyed due to the effort it took to do it.
