He looked down the hallway, turning his head just around the corner. Clear.
His sigh of relief was louder than it should have been.
It was empty. In fact, it was the middle of afternoon classes. There should have been nobody there, and thank god the close was clear. Jay was silently thankful that most of his courses were morning classes, minus his Grim Combat course which was normally only two times a week in the afternoons. But that day wasn’t today.
He just wanted to get through the day without being bombarded by students, specifically the female and sometimes male group that seemed to follow him around whenever he wasn’t teaching. They always asked so many questions, they always seemed to want to know more and they always wanted to get so uncomfortably close. Perhaps if he was just a huntsman he wouldn’t have cared, maybe he even would have teased them for their curiosity, but he couldn’t do that now. He was their teacher…
Of course, walking down the quiet hallway, Jay felt as if it was almost too quiet. His steps echoed loudly as he near nervously lifted his hand to the brim of his hat. His footsteps only slowed as he began breathing heavily. He felt them.
“Professor Jay~?”
The cheery voices sent chills down his spine. The infirmary was just around the corner, he could act like he didn’t hear. He could just completely ignore them and continue walking. He booked it. There it was! The infirmary door with a medical sign on it! They wouldn’t know where he went, just leaving behind an empty hall behind him. He moved as fast as he would have if he was being chased by Grimm, grabbed the handle, and slammed the door behind him.
He leaned against the wall, making sure his shadow couldn’t be seen in the window. His knees felt like jelly as he used the wall for support. Wait… was the Doc there?!
He stammered out a few indistinguishable words. “Uh.. Ah… D-Doc? D-Don’t worry it’s just me, Jay!” He took of his hat, holding it with one hand as he held it above his chest. He felt like his heart was beating out of it. He would look around again, just making sure that the rest of the room was empty besides its usual occupant of the school nurse. Thankfully it was… or at least he couldn’t see anyone anywhere.
“I swear… I think teenage girls are more ferocious than a pack of Grimm.”
He ran his fingers through his raven blue hair, trying to gather himself after another rather horrifying encounter. Honestly, the former huntsman just never really understood why the students like him so much. At least, the most reasonable ones weren’t so enamoured, but then there was just… so many others. He never really thought of himself as that handsome or attractive, was it his personality? Was he too nice for his own good? Why should this have been a problem in the first place? He sighed again, his face a bit blushed as he finally stood up on his own, placing his fedora style hat back on his head. Really, the situation was also kind of embarrassing. Despite having never been a teacher before, he was near certain that this wasn’t the kind of problem that teachers should have been facing.

Spring had arrived in Haven Academy. This meant two things. One, no more cold winters, which Doctor Yuki Haragitanai definitely looked forward to. Two, allergies. While thankfully Dr. Haragitanai had no problem with allergies due to pollen or dust or any of that sort, the same could not be said for a lot of the student body, which often meant that students would come in droves. Running noses, watery eyes, closed throats, and lots of sneezing. It was a bittersweet time of year for Doctor Haragitanai since she could enjoy the weather but had to do so in the presence of snot-nosed brats begging for tissues and allergy medication every waking moment. [break] [break] The infirmary was a haven of quietness for students to rest and recover. Not only for the students, but for Doctor Haragitanai as well. She enjoyed her quiet time since most of the day was her running from the infirmary to the labs to make sure the supplies were stocked to her classrooms to make sure nobody was drinking the rubbing alcohol thinking that it was made for drinking. Yes, her holy place was the infirmary, and even now it's been intruded by students thinking they can be loud and obnoxious to the recovering students and more importantly herself. [break] [break] To say that she's been in a bad mood lately would be an understatement. Bags were forming under her eyes from constantly having to stay late hours to request restocks in the infirmary for antihistamine medications along with additional medical supplies. For whatever fucking reason, these news shitsticks like to throw themselves into danger and get hurt. For example, she had a call for an emergency treatment of a student that managed to get shot several times in Shade's exercise. The fuck?! Were these idiots trying to kill themselves or were they stupid enough to think that aura meant that they were some kind of superhero?? The more she thought about it, the more she felt like she was going to pop a vein and pop a hole in the wall. [break] [break] The infirmary itself was a decent size. It was about the size of a small classroom and had beds lined up against one end with curtains drawn around each one for privacy. Adjacent to the beds were sets of tall cabinets used to house various emergency medical equipment and supplies. On the other wall were two large windows that stretched across to overlook the central area of campus which Doctor Haragitanai liked to keep open ajar to allow fresh air in. Adjacent to the windows was a long desk that was where she kept important files, documents, and her personal belongings. On it laid her golden, butterfly shaped hairpin. Finally on the last wall was the door leading to the hallways that was surrounded by various charts, diagrams, and reminders for students to wash their fucking hands. A lovely addition made by her's truly. At least for the time being, Doctor Haragitanai managed to catch a break. It would be another half hour until it was time to teach her next class, therefore she'd decided to close her eye- [break] [break] BANG [break] [break] Doctor Haragitanai's eyes shot open in surprise as she looked up to see who it was. Ah, it was Professor Bleu Jay, the handsome one. At least, that's what most of the female students that show up in the infirmary and decided that it would be a good place to hang out one time tend to talk about. She could see why they would think that. He was tall, slim, had a face that could kill, and a personality that made girls fawn over him and made ladies want to eat him up. A tragic fate for more than one reason. She wasn't surprised about his sudden appearance... [break] [break] She was surprised that this bastard had the balls to be slamming the infirmary door while there were people, like her, resting. [break] [break] "Oh I'm aware of whose there, Professor." Doctor Haragitanai said with a sweet voice as she slowly got up and moved her neck slightly in both directions, letting out a series of popping noises. Taking several steps towards him, each step clicking under her high heels. As he was rambling something about teenage bitches and running his fingers through his hair like he was some pretty boy, Doctor Haragitanai slammed her palm against the wall beside his head. As the sounds of the passing group of girls faded away, if Professor Jay listened closely, he could hear the sound of concrete crackling under the squish of her leather gloves. In addition, an overwhelming amount of pressure was emanating from Doctor Haragitanai as she continued to smile while speaking in a sweet tone. On her temple, a vein was visibly popping, pulsating violently. [break] [break] "While I have no problem with you trying to find somewhere to hide from your fanclub, I would like to remind you that this is the infirmary, and that there are students here resting. I would like to ask you to refrain from slamming my door in the future, understand, Pro-fes-sor Jay?" Doctor Haragitanai said with a cute inflection on each syllable as she opened her eyes. [break] [break] She was pissed.

So maybe it wasn’t just teenage girls that were scary, but adult women as well. Jay wasn’t sure what he was thinking, he’d been surrounded by those kinds of women for a majority of his life. On his four man team, he had been the only guy! Being a solo huntsman for so long… maybe he really had forgotten how terrifying the opposite sex could be.
When the Doctor approached, he made no moves to counter her. She was right after all, he had learned enough to never presume that any woman was wrong… especially in that state of mind. She was smiling, scarily smiling, and well, Jay was near dumb enough to simply smile back, rather stupidly.
He startled when she placed, er, punched the wall, beside him with the open palm of her hand. She was very close to him. Almost ironically, this was probably the closest he’d been to a female in quite a while and that was a very bad thought to have at that moment in time. With her face near on his, the words she spoke were so ingrained in his mind. His blush only seemed to take over his face, really he had never been so red before in his adult life. His knees were going back to jelly, but he certainly couldn’t fall on top of her. The wall remained his only option.
When she said his name, however, he knew that he was beyond redemption.
He blinked once, then twice again.
“I-I’m very s-sorry, D-Doc.”
And was a stuttered apology the only thing he could respond with? He didn’t have many other options. Honestly, he wasn’t sure on what plane of existence he thought he was safe from any woman at all. And so his mouth just continued to run without any other filter.
“I’ll d-definitely be more careful next time, I mean the door was just there and I really didn’t mean to bother you or your patients or anything like that. I-It was pretty selfish of me and I was only thinking about saving m-my own skin and s-sometimes things just happen you know? And well, it w--”
And then he suddenly stopped, but that wasn’t really of his own decision either. A sharp pain went striking through his shoulder, like a strike of lightning hitting him hard on the muscle. It wasn’t an unusual kind of pain, but one so sharp that the man had to take a pause in his words. He winced, inhaling a large breath of air. It dually served to shut himself up, something he was quietly thankful for, and to prevent him from crying out. When he strained himself or stressed himself out, the old injury would act up and certainly, the past few moments had more than fulfilled both of those requirements. His own stupid smile still hadn’t faded, but perhaps it had softened up a bit.
“I-It was a stupid, spur of the moment decision. And if you would allow me a next time, I will make sure not to do something I’ll regret. Heh, thanks for not kicking me out, Doc.” His easy words obviously came through some steeling through the pain. Jay didn’t say anything about the injury or his sudden change of tone. If the Doctor knew anything about him, particularly related to his medical records, then she would know exactly what it was. It was pretty well known among administration that this was his fatal flaw that had ended his huntsman career. He wasn’t the type of man to ask for sympathy and it really didn’t look like Doc was the kind of woman to so easily give it.
And well, if she didn’t know anything at all, the man grabbing at his shoulder would likely prove to anyone, doctor or not, that was the source of his sudden pain. It a weakness he didn’t like to admit he had, but at he supposed he was in the right place to suddenly had the injury act up again. “Well, I’d really hate to bother you more Doc, after so much hospitality, but could I ask for a little of that Doctor magic?”

What the hell is with this guy? This bastard was blushing and gushing like he was some kind of schoolgirl whose being cornered by his crush, unless he's into that type of thing. Doctor Haragitanai didn't judge. Okay maybe a little bit. Either way, seeing how much he squirmed was rather enjoyable. Normally she had to hold back against harassing students unless they were being a nuisance, but in this case, Professor Jay was faculty. He can take a bit of teasing, right? [break] [break] "Hush, will you sweetie?" She interrupted him mid-rant as he rambled something about being selfish. Doctor Haragitanai placed her gloved finger against his lips and leaned in close at him, gazing at his blue eyes with her own lavender colored ones. "I prefer men that spoke little, y'see?" She said as she closed her eyes slowly and pursed her lips. [break] [break] Ah- Something happened. [break] [break] Doctor Haragitanai noticed how as he continued his rambling, his sentence suddenly cut off. Professor Jay didn't seem like he was spacing out or noticed anything different around the environment. Either he was trying to hold something in, or something happened to him and he was trying to deal with some kind of chronic issue, as indicated by his wince and breath of air. A Huntsman is expected to have some level of pain tolerance, therefore something that would cause him to stop mid-sentence had to be painful. [break] [break] Though Doctor Haragitanai obviously knew what it was. After being hired on the spot by the Haven Administration, she was dumped all of the student and faculty health profiles as well as being put in charge of managing student health reports as well as the faculty's previous medical history. This included Professor Jay's shoulder condition. Her suspicions were confirmed when he grabbed at his shoulder and asked her to "do her magic". Well, least he wasn't being a little bitch about it, she gave him that much. Unfortunately this meant she couldn't keep teasing him to relieve stress. [break] [break] After Professor Jay asked for treatment, she gazed at him with a straight face for several seconds. The gall on this man. Although it wasn't the first time that she had seen Professor Jay in the infirmary for this issue, the result was usually the same. She didn't know what was his deal with coming here so frequently, but ultimately she couldn't say no. She let out a sigh as she grabbed him by the arm and dragged him to the desk area. She sat him on an ordinary rolling chair as Doctor Haragitanai sat on her's, scooting close to him once more while assuming a professional face. As much as she wanted to cave his skull in for bothering her, he was a patient first and foremost for now, and she treated all her patients with care. Usually. [break] [break] "Remove your jacket and shirt." Doctor Haragitanai commanded as she checked her files to pull up Professor Jay's profile and make sure she knew where the location was. If he was taking too long or being squeamish, she'd simply remove his clothes forcibly herself and continue on with the check-up. Seeing bodies, especially naked ones, with little reaction should be the least a school nurse can do obviously. [break] [break] She lifted his arm and inspected the region that was the most tender. Concentrating on his shoulder, her hands would glow a gentle, golden light as it traveled across her arm. Her Semblance allowed her to sense areas that are damaged due to trauma and fix them. Thinking from another perspective, it also allowed her to diagnose the presence or absence of injury. Right. Her previous diagnosis confirmed that it was an injury received from his past work as a working Huntsman, though unfortunately it was a bit more complicated than that. There wasn't a sign of injury anywhere, which meant that this was either a psychological problem, or something else. [break] [break] Although Professor Jay most likely has some mental trauma due to the loss of his previous team members, he was largely stable. Therefore, it was not a mental problem, but rather a physiological problem. When wounds heal over time, sometimes the wrong cells regenerate in certain areas, especially when under heavy amounts of stress. Such cells includes pain nerve receptors, which are the cells that act as the body's signal to the brain and then relays back to that region with the sensation of 'pain'. The most likely issue was that during Professor Jay's recovery, his body accidentally recovered pain nerve receptors in the shoulder region that normally does not contain such receptors and made it more sensitive to stimuli as a result. [break] [break] "To put it in simple words, your body's hurting in places that it shouldn't." Doctor Haragitanai said without moving an inch. "It's unfortunate but it's from the stress that you've put on your body in the past catching up to you. My semblance doesn't deal with chronic injuries, though I lessened the frequency of the pain episodes by closing off a few of those nerve fibers that's been causing random pain episodes. There's some medications that I can prescribe you that will allow you to manage the pain, but you'll need to come back frequently to get more refills." She said as she leaned back on her chair to allow him to put on his clothes. [break] [break] "Any questions?"
Jay had no other way to call it. Perhaps he didn’t mind as much as the younger students, after all, at least the Doctor was of age. Yet… wasn’t there some unspoken rule about faculty getting involved with each other? In all honesty, perhaps both of them realized that taking it any further was simply just an impossible thing to do. There wasn’t any harm in saying words, perhaps under a different set of circumstances, Jay would have reciprocated the action. But considering that the woman was very mad and somehow still had the devious side of her to tease so freely, Jay was getting a mixed bag of signals. Besides, weren’t they in a semi-public place? Were there… students there too? Wait, just how did she think it was appropriate either?
Again, somehow his old injury was giving a good excuse to not continue the conversation, whatever way it was going. He was glad that at least something out there was looking out for him.
This wasn’t the first time he’d been in the infirmary for the injury. In his first few weeks at Haven, really it had acted up more than usual. He’d been able to get by on painkillers before and as the days had gone by, he’d been able to keep in under control. However, there were rare incidents like this one when the pain spiked for some reason or another. She looked at him with very violet pink eyes, he wondered if he had said something very wrong not so long ago. And with all that he had been muttering, he wouldn’t have been surprised.
Then she very forcefully grabbed him on the arm.
He more or less was dragged to her desk area and once again, he simply let her do as she wished rather than fight her movements. He was just barely thankfully that she wasn’t grabbing the side that was the very bad shoulder. He was sat down in a simple rolling chair and the Doc and her own.
"Remove your jacket and shirt."
Despite the situation, Jay had to crack a smile, perhaps one he would regret very soon but it was in his nature to make light of the situation. “Ah, now you know Doc, I usually like to wait until at least the second date.”
He got his blue jacket off while still favoring his shoulder, the pain had dulled slightly from the initial sharp appearance, but that didn’t mean it had faded away. He neatly laid his jacket on a nearby shelf, careful not to disturb anything that was on it, soon followed his hat laid on top. He was a dark long sleeve shirt underneath, a turtleneck, and soon he removed it by slipping it over his head, taking a sharp intake of breath as he had to stretch his shoulder slightly.
It was safe to say that not many people, faculty or student, had really seen the teacher so uncovered. Of course, on his forearms he had a pair of metal gauntlets, loaded and ready were his knives with wire dispensers. Despite Haven being a regarded ‘safe’ place and even most students had their weapons in their lockers, old habits died hard with the old huntsman. He had his Zodiac with him at all times. But regarding the man exposing himself, it didn’t happen very often. He had scars, plenty to share, plenty of stories behind them and that was one of the reasons he didn’t like letting people see. He’d been battered and bruised, he was a Huntsman after all and his body had all the tell-tale signs, perhaps a bit more than most his age. That was because he’d been no ordinary Huntsman. In his prime, he’d been reckless and dangerous. Jay would be the first to admit that he’d put himself in more danger than necessary back in the day and he had the scars to show it. Perhaps it was another fitting miracle that he had to stop while he was so dangerous.
However, the most serious of the scars was the one that seemed to take up most of his right shoulder. Large and discolored, the scar tissue stretched from the front over to his back. The Doctor came closer, he allowed her to touch him. His tried to calm his breathing, but as she laid his hands on him, it was hard not to draw in sharp breaths. He saw the glowing light, knowing that she really was doing her Doctor magic as he as hopefully asked. He was finally able to let himself relax a little after feeling so tense in the past several moments.
Her next words were probably expected. He was near certain he’d heard them before, probably from a doctor just like her. It was almost cute, the way she spoke so matter of fact. He gave another casual smile as he grabbed his shirt to slip it back on.
“Painkillers? Ah, Doc how else do you think I lasted so long in the field?” Well, it was true. That and the fact that he once constantly used his aura to maintain some semblance of control over the pain. Maybe he was even hinting at the fact he had used a lot more painkillers with a certain kick to them back in the day as well. Who would blame the guy when it hurt that bad? Of course, he hadn’t come to the school with that information so freely known. There was a lot about him both in school records and the general Huntsman information that was shared so freely, but that was only the information he had been willing to share publicly.
”Thanks again, Doc. And well, I guess we’ll get that second date sooner rather than later eh?”

“Ah, now you know Doc, I usually like to wait until at least the second date.” [break] [break] "Well aren't you a little charmer. If you can be cracking jokes like that I guess you're fine eh?" She said as she raised her hand to give his shoulder a hard slap, causing a loud 'thawck' echo across the room. It won't hurt him too much, since she still had her Semblance active. As long as it was active, her Semblance fixes any injuries. However, it doesn't specialize in pain nullification, which means that while the body isn't physiologically harmed, it still feels the force of her fists. Heh. He's a tough one anyways, Doctor Haragitanai supposed that if he can handle chronic pain for this long, something like this won't kill him. Yet. [break] [break] If Doctor Haragitanai knew just what kind of rare show she'd be getting when he was fully undressed from the waist up, she'd have taken a picture and sell it to Professor Jay's groupies for money. Truthfully, he wasn't that bad looking. Maybe even use the proceeds of leaked body shots to buy more supplies. What an opportunity. Aside from that, she gazed at his upper body, examining the ugly, permanent scars that littered his body like a battlefield full of craters. It was very apparent that the bastard used his head more than his brain, and Doctor Haragitanai did not like that. He was an idiot, for sure, that only managed to get to this point by sheer luck alone. Her eyes locked onto the largest scar, which happened to be on his tweaked shoulder. Figures. [break] [break] Although the school records didn't give any full details on what he did during the events of the Fall and his enlistment as Haven faculty, she had some idea of what he did. Most Huntsmen and Huntresses that live long enough either fall into one of two categories: They get power-hungry and think they're the top shit, getting into reckless battles, or they experience the cruel reality and say 'fuck it' before proceeding to get into reckless battles. [break] [break] She's seen it before, and experienced it herself. The sense of helplessness and stress that accumulates into apathy and evolve into a feeling of not caring for their own body. It's a dangerous game to play, and one that she didn't want to see anyone else lose that gamble. Hell, she'd even reach in there and drag them back by the neck if she needed to. After her diagnosis, he had responded with confirmation that he had indeed, been relying on painkillers to manage his pain all this time. Though as he said so dismissively, she rolled her eyes. [break] [break] "No shit." She said sarcastically as she dropped her hands from his shoulder and began writing on a clipboard. "Any normal person with a condition like this would be taking some kind of pain management medication, though painkillers you'd normally buy at a store has its limitations in terms of levels of pain management and duration. With a chronic condition like yours, your body's bound to have adapted to the medication based on how frequently you take them. Not to mention your phyiochemical tests indicated that regular painkillers haven't been the only thing you've taken in the past..." Her voice trailed off as she marked something on the clipboard. [break] [break] "Well, it's not my position to pry or condemn. I am just a nurse after all. Healing injuries and making sure people don't die is my job, and so long as nobody dies on my watch agai-" Whoops there she goes, almost saying more unnecessary stuff again. Doctor Haragitanai had a bad habit of rambling on and saying a lot more than was necessary, often leading to uncomfortable conversations. She clicked the pen that she had been writing with and placed it against her lips as her eyes scanned the writing on the document. [break] [break] Doctor Haragitanai glanced up and eyed Professor Jay with a mischievous look on her face as she stood up and approached a cabinet to retrieve an unmarked bottle. It seemed rather old, and unlike any of the regular over-the-counter painkillers people could buy at a conventional store. "Sorry, I only date men whose bodies aren't already sixty." She said as she sat back down and slid it over. The bottle itself had a small butterfly crest on it, and the pills inside were a translucent color with a golden hue. They were medications that she had compounded herself while she had worked with the medic corps back in the day, though her supplies were limited after basically being booted out. "So get better and ask me out properly next time, alright Pro-fes-sor Jay?" Doctor Haragitanai said with a half-smirk.

"Well aren't you a little charmer. If you can be cracking jokes like that I guess you're fine eh?"
He really was good at putting words in his own mouth that could just so… very easily be taken aback. Perhaps that was one of his more endearing qualities? Jay liked to think so. Doc maybe thought so too. She hit him, not hard but hard enough. He wasn’t really ready and he winced when she did quite literally punch him, right in the shoulder. All he really let out was a short grunt, but it was enough to get him to shut up.
And then there was just the matter of him being half-naked in front of her too. If he spoke honestly, there was a reason he often wore long sleeves and the suit, despite the warming weather. He was quite fit for his age, no, he wasn’t embarrassed about that part at all. But yes, he did have scars. His body had seen better days. It wasn’t uncommon for huntsmen to sacrifice a pretty face for their job, at least in his case, most of his marring scars could be hidden. The biggest was on his shoulder, as expected. As he sat there, feeling the golden aura steady the pain, he sighed. A moment, that was all it was, a moment for once he could relax, he could truly let go of all the burdens of being a teacher, a huntsman, the memories of just how he came to be so scarred.
She couldn’t take away all the pain, but it was something he had learned to deal with ever since he had received the injury. He remembered waking up in the hospital bed, doctors telling him to take it slow, hearing the news that the people they had been hired to protect had survived, hearing from Robin that Yancy and Natalia had… Dark eyes only stopped looking to the past when the Doc spoke again. He smiled, hearing her nag was almost something quite endearing in a way. He raised his hand as she trailed off, of course, no shit, that was what she had said. He was fine with that too. “Cross my heart, I don’t do the hard stuff anymore.” He wanted to at least make it clear… Yes, it had been true he had resorted to some dangerous ways to relieve his pain initially. But back then it hadn’t just been the physical pain that hurt the most. Anyway, he was a teacher now, supposedly that meant he was a role model for his young students.
He said little else in response as he grabbed his shirt and began slipping it on again.
He paused at her next set of words. So, even the Doc had her slip ups too huh? He didn’t say anything back immediately. He only looked to her with his dark blue eyes, but he understood. Really, the two of them were more similar than at first appearance. Broken people seemed to just attract each other right? He felt like he had heard those words somewhere before.
“Misery loves company right, Blue?”
“... Goodbye, Robin.”
He had his own burdens and so did she. He’d been there before, maybe he really was still stuck in own head. It was easier to try and ignore it all sometimes.
And just like that, the moment was gone again. He made his comment about that second date, but he stopped at hearing her response. He was just smoothing out his undershirt when he made a noise that was somewhere in between a wince and chuckle. “Geez Doc, you don’t have to say it like that.” He ended up smiling anyway, maybe she was right. His physical status was one of the reasons he stopped being a mercenary anyway. Some days he really did feel like an old man.
He caught the medicine bottle though. His reflexes hadn’t faded quite yet. Jay inspected the bottle a bit more closely, finding that it really wasn’t something Haven sanctioned, to say the least. He gave her a raised eyebrow, but then tucked it away in his jacket pocket. And right after he said that he didn’t do the hard stuff anymore. “I might be an old man, but I do have a few redeeming qualities right? Like a dashing sense of humor and dreamy dark blue eyes? At least… it’s what the girls say.” Admittedly, maybe he shouldn’t have gone with what his apparent fan club loved about him… He was ready for the Doctor to give an easy quip back, honestly, he had left himself open for that one.
"So get better and ask me out properly next time, alright Pro-fes-sor Jay?"
Hearing his name said in such a manner only reminded him of his initial entrance into her office. Even in all his years of being practically surrounded by them, women still confused the old man. He set his hat back on his head, tipping it slightly like a gentleman should. “If those are the doctor’s order, then I’ll be sure to listen to them.” He was able to stand freely now and headed to the door, he was checking around it to ensure that the hallway was empty once again.
