-Ok, one down and... 9 still standing. After about 20 minutes-
...Yeah, this ain’t working...
Retracting the chain of my weapon, I cast a glance towards the floating discs of clay I had made earlier to use as targets for practicing my long-range fighting. Sighting with a hint of irritation on my face, I sat down on the soft ground of the quad to meditate on what the hell I was doing wrong.
The idea had been simple, create moving targets for me to at least try and hit with the chained dart function of Nereida. The theory was all fine and dandy as far as I could tell.
It was at the hour of the execution that things started falling apart. And quite hard to be honest.
For starters, I had to consciously not move the discs to were my weapon was going. So after successfully destroying the first 10 or so discs without breaking a sweat with perfect shoots, I kinda figured out I had to be subconsciously cheating on myself there. Because there was no way in hell I was that good.
Well, I could start easy on myself and make them be stationary targets, that way I just had to resist the impulse of moving them at all and things would be alright.
And on that regard, yeah, I managed to complete a round of training without making the targets move even an inch from their position... Thing is, I also didn’t manage to hit more than one in 20 full minutes.
To make things worst, I was surprisingly dexterous with the chain at close distance fighting, as I had made use of it multiple times in the past few years. But sadly, as soon as something went outside the normal reach of my spear I practically became a cripple that couldn't hit her own shadow.
Alright, this was bullshit. How many years I’ve spent practicing with this thing for me to have absolutely 0 to show for it? Sure, I was good with it as a regular spear, but I should have been good with both!
“Maybe I’m doing this wrong... Maybe I could use the chain for something else instead... Binding? I probably should go to talk with that guy Alexandros to see if he can help me with some adjustments for Nereida...”
But even taking all of that into consideration, I was wary of the idea of changing her in any significative way... After all, did I have any right to change something as personal as Nereidas form?
As I received her, that way she had always stayed. I had to learn the spear from 0 but I did so nonetheless and did it with her. So many memories, so many hardships she helped me pull trough, it was my signature both on the streets and in my more intimate moments.
Cutting a loaf of bread to share with a past friend, using it as a support for a hammock, or as a cane to help me stand when I felt like my legs were about to give up... Of course, with the good, it also came the bad, but that was part of the ride as well. And in all my life I had only learned to use two weapons, that spear being one of them.
Yes, Nereida and Bianca were synonymous, to change it would also imply something about myself? Would all of those memories be lost when I looked at the spear and saw something different? Would I be even willing to do it? To invert her and transform her, to reinvent a weapon that never felt truly mine, but more like a lease...
But those thoughts could wait for a later occasion, for now, I was training.
Collecting the clay disks near me, I sat down a bench to think of a better strategy when suddenly, someone approaching in the distance caught my attention.
It was a girl, one of the new arrivals we had recently. After the vytal festival, we seemed to have an entire wave of new students arriving at Haven. Maybe thanks to the good performance our school had during the tournament it was only logical more people would seek to enroll now that we proved we were more than a bunch of misfits and rejects.
And ironically, I believed that this was the reason we were so strong when compared to other schools.
Anyway, the girl was a blonde one, about the same height as me, and if I remember correctly she was the one soaring above the competition during Shadecloack’s rescue training (Literally). Forcyntia or something like that.
She had a pretty powerful semblance in my opinion, even more so if her fighting style involved more ranged attacks than melee combat, although sweeping passes at a flying speed were nothing to be easily dismissed, as my training with Ryan had taught me.
As it was clear she was coming towards me, I let my spear to rest on the bench and went ahead to greet her while whipping a drop of sweat from my brow. It was a nice sunny day, so I had chosen to train outside with nothing more than a light tunic, but even then the heat was starting to take its toll on me.
-Yo, how’s it going? I think we are not acquainted yet. Name’s Bianca. What do I owe the pleasure?- I called as I reached her position with my best smile. Extending my hand to greet her as I did a second take on her features.
All in all, she looked like a pretty girl, not overly menacing neither in her frame nor in her easygoing expression... I could at least say she looked friendly enough... Although, I could not help but feel some weird vibes coming from her.
