“Oh ho?”
“Oh ho?”
“Oh ho?’
Rosario saw it coming. Of course, Colton had told him to watch out for above. Rosario and his clones all reacted to the sword beams coming down from above. He dodged, easily, rolling to the right and each of his clones soon enough did the same. Of course, after they all stopped, dropped, and rolled, they faded away. Rosario had been ahead of the stuffed toy, near the middle of the room himself when Qiu’li came flying down.
“Tsk.”
Qiu’li intended to run to the wall to get around him. Rosario could guess such an easy kind of intention, but he wasn’t about to let it happen so easily.
“Hey Samurai Jack! Don’t ignore me! You’ll hurt my feelings!”
Ros called out to the raven-haired foreigner, and immediately threw his sheath at him. It wasn’t really a great strategy in return, but he aimed ahead of where Qiu’li was not Qiu’li himself. He wanted to stop him, but more likely, he also wanted the swordsman to pay attention to him. His words may have sounded like a joke, but Ros really did hate being ignored. And so, Ros charged at Qiu’li himself. He wasn’t that fast, but he was fast enough. Sakura was still his in hand, and he was coming at Qiu’li with no holds barred.
“Let’s go! Echo!”
He ran ahead, coming down at the swordsman but Rosario’s eyes held that signature neon glow. He swung down with Sakura, but his intention wasn’t Qiu’li again. Instead, his swing came down but Ros ducked down to roll and to catch his guard sheath on the ground. Ros was confident in his own agility to dodge around Qiu’li. But behind him, a pink shadow took form in the air before materializing to a copy of Ros himself, swinging down in the same act that Ros had done as well.
“Let’s go! Echo!”
Regardless, the clone was only temporary and dissipated only seconds after making its slashing move. Maybe Qiu’li could’ve dodged Ros’s first move if he intended to hit him, but could he dodge twice in a row? And Colton too.
At this time, Colton decided to return. Ros could smirk, maybe the two actually were a good pair. He wasn’t so close, but apparently close enough to through his weapons at the samurai in a wild kind of desperation. “Hey Magnum! The party’s just getting started eh?” Rosario laughed aloud, giggling as readied both Sakura and its sheath back into his dual wielding stance. He wanted to have some fun.

Ah. Good news and bad news. The good news was that the toy was here, to the Northwest corner, which was quite literally five meters away and Qiu'li was dead North, which meant that all he had to do was simply redirect his descent down the wall to a wall-run by using the glaive to slow him down enough for his feet to catch onto the wall and begin his run towards the toy. Since he was against the wall, he couldn't exactly throw a sword beam straight at it and call it a day. He'd need to stay still, therefore Qiu'li decided to go straight for it and throw himself right at it in a flurry of Fennu to hopefully complete the objective and be done with this exercise.
Except for the bad news: He wasn't alone in this room. As if he had heard an echo, Qiu'li recognized the voice of another student. Since he was much faster, it couldn't be Colton catching up to him since he had to make several turns and go through another room, therefore he had to guess it was the other lad. Considering that the objective was literally right in front of him, Qiu'li opted for the original plan and decided against trying to waste his advantage of trying to fight a battle that he wasn't sure that he could win. Although he could barely make it out, he was sure that the other was trying to taunt him or try to distract him from attack the toy. If it were Qiu'li from before he had left Forever Fall, he might have taken the bait and responded to his provocation, but he was different now. When it comes to completing a task, the objective comes first.
Out of the corner of his eye, Qiu'li noticed a dark mass hurling right towards him. A ranged attack? A projectile weapon? Qiu'li didn't have the time to try and question what it was but moved instinctively to what turned out to be a sheath of a sword that was sent hurling at him. With Fennu's boost, Qiu'li could usually dodge an attack like that, but since he was still wall running towards the toy, he had no choice but to kick off the wall to avoid the projectile. While he kicked himself off towards the toy, he realized that doing so would slow him down a bit. While he was directly right in front of the toy at this point, landing gave Ros ample time to catch up enough to try for a downward strike at his head.
Deciding against trying to defend from the strike, Qiu'li opted to dodge and sidestep instead, his weapon at the ready. Though.. why did Ros suddenly decide to duck down? Oh- He was trying to reach for the object he had thrown at him earlier, which Qiu'li now recognized as the sheath to his weapon, which probably explained why he was only holding a sword. However, Qiu'li did not anticipate what was happening next: An apparition, or rather a clone similar to Ros had appeared right behind him ready for a downward slash!! Despite mimicking the exact movement as Ros which Qiu'li could have side stepped again, the fact of the matter is that he had come into the battle without knowing his opponent's Semblance, and he paid for it. While he was still side-stepped though, the sudden appearance of the second figure caught him right in the shoulder and damaged his Aura.
He was taken by surprise, but deciding against further trying to fight Ros off, Qiu'li knew he was running out of time and further trying to engage with Ros would either mean risking more damage from his clones or being intercepted by Colton and turning into a disadvantageous fight. With only a few seconds left to spare before Colton burst through Room 6, Qiu'li knew he had to destroy the toy literally right behind him. If he turned around to attack, however, Ros would easily take advantage and either slash right at his back to defeat him or figure out a way to intercept him before he could respond. While he did roll to make some distance, Qiu'li would opt for his second technique: Tricks of the Forest.
As soon as the clone dissipated, Qiu'li swung his glaive downward so that the bladed end was in the ground. While Ros might have gotten the jump on him, Qiu'li still had a range advantage: Ros had a katana while he had a glaive, which gave him a solid arm's length advantage. He would get slashed by Longtou fixed on Panlong before he could get close enough to cut him again, which should make him cautious. Using that caution, Qiu'li would swing upward at Ros, but instead of trying to cut him, he send up a storm of dirt and dust right at his face!!
With the force of the upward swing, Qiu'li kicked off from the ground using the pole end of Panlong to send him flying backwards at the stuffed toy and with acrobatic finesse, he twirled his body midair and extended his arms clutching his glaive and spun into a whirlwind attack right at the toy. At this point, Colton would have made it to the other room and thrown his weapons at him. He could only hope that his strike on the toy was sufficient enough to call it a victory on his part before getting struck by the full force of Polarity.

Bravery is believing in yourself, and that's one thing nobody can teach you.
The clean strike that Ros landed put Qiu’li’s aura in the single digits, with force from the shotgun shell and the marbles from earlier compounding onto the strain of the uncontested hit from Rosario. The moves he had pulled off were fancy but ate up crucial seconds that allowed the Argus native to charge into the room and toss his weapons. His opponent was arcing through the air to attack the stuffed animal but was far enough away from it that Colton’s instant toss combined with the fact that Qiu’li’s aura was low enough to impede his movement made the difference. It wasn’t exactly hard to predict how gravity worked, so the sand didn’t exactly cause many problems for what he needed to do.
The shield was flung at full speed towards the boy’s legs, though the former champion didn’t quite realize how low his opponent’s aura reserves were. Any blow, no matter how glancing at this point would shatter Qiu’li’s aura in an instant and most likely drop him to the ground in a mix of pain and exhaustion. The pain and exhaustion amplified the more ‘excess’ damage there was, so a clean hit at this point would break the aura and block absolutely none of the pain that came with it. The fall to the ground, too, would be extremely painful. The sword was flung a little lower in case the shield missed, and would either hit the boy as he fell or lodge itself into the wall next to the stuffed animal. Either way, it was impacting something. The shield was similar insofar as whether it hit or not, it would lodge itself into the wall and be useless to Colton in the near future.
He listened for the sound of aura shattering, but even if he didn’t hear it immediately the next task was completely obvious. He needed to turn around and at least block Huli from simply finishing the job her partner started. Pulling back the boy’s weapons was risky, insofar as he wasn’t sure if he could pull them out without destroying the objective himself without looking – and he didn’t have enough time to look. The turn around was instant as brown eyes widened slightly at the blood that had continued to run down the Faunus’ face, but that didn’t actually stop him from meeting her charge.
The gap between their skill in hand to hand was immediately obvious, as Colton was able to land blows essentially at will. The issue, however, was the fact that none of those blows had a lot of power behind them. The weapons that the girl had made it extremely tricky to avoid all damage, but the boy knew damned well that if her palms hit him he was in for a world of hurt. This meant that he had to avoid being touched at all costs by those palms, even if that meant getting hit by the claws instead.
Colton landed a series of punches, kicks, and sweeps extremely often but each one did very little damage. Huli’s wild swings landed rarely but did damage equal to multiple unarmed strikes from the Argus native. If the former champion’s durability was not so high, he would have been taken out of commission rather quickly. As it stood, though, he had enough aura to trade more or less evenly with the Faunus and at least prevent her from moving with any rapidity towards the objective.
He wasn’t sure if Huli’s aura blocked the earlier shotgun blast at all, so had no idea whether he could even win the one on one assuming he continued to not be caught by her semblance. If the shotgun blast ate into her aura reserves, then they started off the fight more or less equal and one of them would win by a hair if the current pace continued. If her aura was off completely, though, and she started the fight at full then Colton was at a disadvantage and at the current pace would have his aura shatter first without a doubt. He had no idea how damaged Rosario was at all, but in the moment the boy was content with just stalling for time and making sure both of their auras were eaten up by the time they were finished.
The situation on the other end of the room was outside of his control, but the situation here was well within it. There was always the possibility that even with Qiu’li’s aura being shattered he still attempted to destroy the objective, which would be beyond stupid and almost certainly against the rules because any further hits on him would result in permanent damage. Being, near as Colt could tell, mentally disabled however there was no small chance he would attempt something very much like that. That was why even if there were cries of victory, the Argus native wouldn’t actually stop fighting. If his opponent was too stupid to know what victory looked like, his shouts of victory or failure were as pointless and forgettable as a fart in the wind.
If Colt was over there and some fucker attempted that, they would get a Polarity enhanced kick to the face for their troubles, and another one if required until they were either legitimately knocked unconscious or they stopped trying to cheat. If they raised a weapon against him when they had no aura and attempted to continue fighting, he would also have no problems permanently ending their tenure at Haven by maiming them. If they were too stupid to have any sense of self-preservation and made a simple exercise a fight to the death, he would treat it as such and ensure that they would never make it past the first month of training.
Unfortunately for all involved, though, this wasn’t Colt’s decision to make this go around because he was a bit preoccupied at the present with the psychotic Faunus girl. This bout would be won or lost in the next thirty seconds or so if it wasn’t already, so he had to make them count. After doing his strategy for about thirty seconds and simply trading blows, the brunette had an idea that was risky but also prevented him from needing his partner’s help in the slightest… One solid semblance infused head kick to Huli. It opened him up to being touched and thus ignited by her semblance, sure, but it also meant that his attack would have some bite and if it hit the absolute worst that would happen would be a double elimination… which was fine from him. If it missed, though… well, there was no time to think about silly possibilities like that.
Huli was as uncoordinated as they come, and it was simple to find a window where it would be hard to impossible for her to defend against a head kick coming from her left with all the force of Polarity behind it to put this scenario in the books as a win for Sanctum. From there, it was just getting it out fast enough to make it connect, and Colt gave it his best attempt.
Attacking team both missed posting deadlines as a note. This post was after about triple the 72 hour deadline. Life was hectic so wanted to give some time, but thread has to end sometime. In lieu of using critical hits or anything of the sort against Huli, I opted to just write it how I thought it might have gone despite the missed posting timer despite being allowed by rules to treat the missed timer as nonaction.

He could tell, even as his clone faded away. Qiu’li’s Aura was broken with a satisfying feeling of shattering. Ros licked his lips, he was just starting to have a little fun, would things really get so easy so fast?
Ah, but not quite.
Ros was fine with that too. In fact, he was very excited.
Qiu’li was coming at him. His Glaive was coming down where his clone had once been, it was an easy dodge. He could do that with a step back, and another twist of her right leg, swinging his body in an s-like curve. It was his reach that gave him a great advantage, but Ros could see that despite coming at him, the foreigner wasn’t really looking to fight. That’s right. They were on a time limit, and Qiu’li wanted that cutesy stuffed dragon. Ros couldn’t blame him, he liked fluffy things too.
“Haha!”
“Haha!”
With glowing yellow eyes, a shadow of Rosario appeared behind him, and this was the Rosario that Qiu’li’s apparent attack was counted on. Scraping up dirt and debris? A dirty move, quite literally. Ros was fine with playing dirty, it made things interesting.
“Playing Dirty? I’m down for it!”
Desperation made anyone make some interesting moves. Flying through the air? That wasn’t exactly something that Rosario could pull off. With his Aura depleted so low, it was amazing that the raven-haired foreigner could even force himself into such acrobatics. Colton came along, as expected of Sanctum’s greatest try-hard. Ros made a tsk with his tongue, the movements in the world became slower around him. Moments turned into minutes in his mind, he only had so much longer to make a decision, to make his move. Colt’s attempt to throw both his weapons at Qiu’li were likely his last effort against the foreigner. He had one Foxxy Lady to deal with himself yet still.
Using his Aura clones so freely, Ros knew that his own Aura was getting rather short too. Well, it went with the terrority of so often just joking around for fun. But this fight, it really was so much fun. Maybe Rosario had forgotten that thrill of the fight he simply so often just waved away. Not much use in trying too hard, he’d die in this job eventually. That was his simple way of things. The pinkette didn’t like seeing things any other way.
With Qiu’li jumping above him, perhaps it really was too easy of a shot.
Ros smoothly stuck Sakura back in her sheath, his movements deliberate to a tune in his head that no one else could really hear. He swung back again, pulling the handle back to aim for a dead shot at Qiu’li himself as his body flew through the air. He held the bottom of the barrel, Sakura’s sheath and aimed without much of a careful intent.
“Hold still for a bit, honey.”
He shot, again and again. He wasn’t the best shot no, but in the flurry of movement and everything else, he really didn’t need to be. Rosario smirked. If anything, he’d had a good time and that was really all he cared about. Who cared really who won and who lost? Unnecessary details were simply that, unnecessary.

The worst case scenario came to pass, and now he was stuck at an impasse: Attempt to try and dodge the incoming projectiles, which was highly unlikely since he was still midair, or block them with Longtou and Panlong in hopes of being able to think of a plan. It seemed like Huli was busy with holding off Colton, and since he was practically disarmed, it would hopefully be a victory for her. Though the same couldn't really be said for Qiu'li. As his body rotated, he caught glimpses of the incoming sword and shield.
Blocking was out of the question now, at this point. No amount of finesse could allow him to prevent taking additional damage, and he felt his qi waver significantly since the first hit. Exhaustion was setting him, as sweat and steam began to pool on his reddened skin. His vision was starting to blur a bit at the sides as well, which didn't lend him much help as the projectiles were fast incoming. Growing up Qiu'li managed to get by with avoiding danger or relying on his qi to mitigate significant damage. He hated pain more than anything since it was a constant reminder of growing up in the village. However, it didn't mean that he was a stranger to it by any stretch of the imagination.
The goal was right before him, just within reach. A good slash and it would be done with. He wasn't the type to be self-sacrificial, not by any means. Survival was how he managed to get here, but he had a sense of duty to finish what he starts by any means. If it meant taking a little pain, then so be it. A full-on strike from a shield will disrupt his qi entirely and he'd be eliminated, simple as that. It was only a spar, Qiu'li understood that much, but in a real-life scenario, this would have been a grave situation.
He had one last-ditch plan, and it was more or less one of desperation. If it didn't work and he missed his mark, so be it. Qiu'li hated failure more than the next guy, but failure was part of learning. Moving on from failure is what determines who is successful and who isn't. Although he took this exercise a little bit more seriously than he had anticipated, Qiu'li would still be a bit disappointed in his performance and for letting down Huli whom probably had entrusted him with the task of destroying the objective. Well, might as well give a shot.
What's the worse that could happen?
He breathed a sigh. With the last bit of self-pity out of the way, he reared his body and with the momentum of his whirlwind-like spin, he used the remaining amount of strength from Fennu and hurled Longtou-Panlong at the stuffed toy. Colton would be aiming at him to stop him from attacking, not his weapon. As he launched the weapon towards the toy, his eyes met with the glinting sword and shield combo. He steeled himself for what was to come. There was no dodging this, therefore he attempted to curl his body as he fell to try and mitigate as much pain as possible.
"Oof-"
With a resounding thud, he felt his qi deplete entirely as the crimson color from his skin dispersed and the steam had billowed out. The shield would have missed his legs, but he'd fall much faster by curling up his body, instead making full contact with his stomach. Qiu'li would feel the wind escape his lungs as the shield smashed right into it him. Qiu'li simply fell, knowing that he couldn't land properly in his weakened state. Qiu'li wasn't sure whether or not the shield continued to fly or if it was also falling beside him after hitting his mark, but if it was he would grab onto it. Although it didn't hurt much, most likely due to the adrenaline rush, his mind was fuzzed from impact. He began to see stars as plummeted towards the ground.
Qiu'li would use the shield to protect him from the incoming sword if he had managed to grab onto it, though if he hadn't gotten a hold of the shield, then he would protect himself with his arms as he tumbled straight downward. He felt the wind whistle quickly around his ears, as he braced himself for impact. He would curl into a ball once more to hopefully mitigate the sensation of pain, even by a little. It would only be a few more seconds until he hit the-
BANG BANG BANG
A searing, burning sensation coursed through his body as Qiu'li's eyes froze in shock. Unaware of Rosario's secondary weapon, Qiu'li had not anticipated a mechanical gun of sorts to fire bullets at him. His qi was depleted from Colton's shot, which meant no protection from further injury. Everything beyond that was merely his own force of will. It was not Rosario's fault for shooting him while he was down. He couldn't have known. It probably wasn't his intention to further cause him injury, though in the real-world, anything beyond this could have been fatal.
Regardless, a couple bullets would pierce Qiu'li in the shoulder, arm, and thigh as rocketed right into the ground, unable to sustain his curled up posture. He wouldn't die, though since medical treatment was nearby, though during this time Qiu'li felt like he might have. Unable to make a sound, Qiu'li simply remained in shock as he laid on the dirt ground, gazing down at his body as blood began to pool around the areas he had been shot by Rosario. It wouldn't be long until he simply passed out. Either from pain or from shock, he wasn't sure, but his vision grew from slightly blurry to near black.
Qiu'li fucked up.

The last minute or so of the scenario was as frantic as they come.
Looking at the aura meters was interesting, and Shade had already pressed the button for the medic on call for this class to start heading over once she saw that Qiu’li’s aura was in the single digits. While she didn’t expect what had happened, it was certainly in the realm of possibility and would necessitate more safety precautions when it came to this sort of thing in the future. From her point of view watching the camera, though, she did notice two things that were odd. The first was that the shield, upon the aura breaking instantly fell to the ground rather than continuing to carry Qiu’li smashing into the wall. The sword that Colton had thrown also redirected to the right to embed itself into a wall a few meters away.
It wasn’t even Rosario’s fault, which was the rough part. He and Colton both attacked trying not to lose, and they both hit within a second of each other with neither of them having any ability to see what the aura meter of their opponent was and how unnecessary that final barrage ended up being. Mental note made to ensure that the timetable on those chest-mounted aura trackers was sped up so that there was some sort of visual indicator. Different colors should do the trick quite nicely.
The melee fight between Huli and Colton was also interesting for reasons other than the fact that Huli would need additional coaching in semblance control. Her form was practically nonexistent and just boiled down to ruthless and unfocused aggression, but it visibly rattled the Sanctum graduate which Shade found odd. There was a certain desperation and dare she think fear in his movements in this fight, which seemed odd considering the fact that he could have gotten back at the very least his shield but perhaps even his sword simply by using his semblance. It made no sense to fight without weapons when it wasn’t forced against an opponent you were uncomfortable facing, which meant that he was so rattled he couldn’t see that possibility… or the more likely observation was that he was showing off intentionally and knew it.
”First match completed, defending team wins. Medic on the way to patch up Qiu’li as we speak, standby in case you’re needed for transport.”
The next morning, packets with performance reviews would be put in the makeshift mailbox outside of each of the weapons lockers of the participants.
Innovative strategy that others copied throughout the day of choosing to bypass the ground and go above the tarp.
Impressive but reckless devotion to winning scenario and coming close enough to where the decision came down to instructor decision because it was too close to call whether your weapon pierced the objective before your aura shattered.
One of the hardest things to learn as a Huntsman is when to stop. Rosario reacted to spear being thrown, because if he didn’t, chances were he would have lost. It was an attack that neither opposing party could block, so the only alternative was to break your aura before it hit the target. It’s a choice that was made that forced a decision from Rosario, and while it’s hard to tell who actually won if I would have given the victory to you it would only encourage that type of martyr behavior and lead to more injuries for the day. Risking life and limb to accomplish an objective is all well and good, but make sure the objective is worth your life before risking it next time.
From this point onward, personal aura meters are mandatory for you in every exercise, so you can get a better sense of where you’re at in terms of reserves left. New safety gear will roll out within the next two weeks, but you’ll be a spectator at least for next week as you recover from injuries sustained in this one.
On another note, I’ve also put an older textbook inside your weapons locker that I think you might find useful. Haven used to have a ‘academy adjustment’ class in order to help students who did not grow up in urban areas to adjust, but it’s gone untaught this semester. I managed to find one of the textbooks and thought it may be useful to you. Pay special attention to Chapter 1 where it explains the uniform standards and things like how to properly put on a tie. It has illustrations that may prove to be helpful. If you need additional assistance, feel free to stop me after class and I’ll help where I can.
The ability to make snap decisions and go through with them in the span of a second is a rare trait for people to have, and you showed that capacity today.
It’s quite obvious from your file and your performance that you have the ability to excel here at Haven, the only question is the same one that it was in Sanctum: whether you want to excel here at Haven.
What happened in that class won’t be the last time you see a classmate lying in a pool of their own blood. Do note that if the cause of that condition is a Grimm or a bandit or any number of hostile creatures, they won’t simply stop and wait for a medic to come and save the day. Stakes are very high in this profession, and at least for the purposes of my classes I don’t care if you seem to take it seriously or not as long as your actions are what they need to be in order to go out there and survive. You have the tools, it’s just a question of whether you want to use them or not.
First and foremost, you are now enrolled in an Aura Control additional class Fridays between 2pm and 3pm for the next month or so. Your new schedule is attached to this letter, so we’ll be seeing each other more frequently in the near future because I’ve volunteered to teach it. Aura control is something that absolutely must be attained before heading off on any mission, or things like bullets tend to get lodged in your shoulder.
Attitude and mental toughness are two traits worthy of a huntress, but you need control and consistency as well. The good news is that the two traits that you have are much harder to teach than the last two, and I’m confident that you’ll be more than ready by the time first missions come around.
Your semblance control has gotten better than the indications on the file I received from Sanctum. The redirection at the end to prevent further injury to your classmate was noted.
With you I just want to stress that leadership is less about barking orders and going off solo to show off and more about bringing a group of people together for one common purpose. At the beginning of the match, you could have easily just used Polarity to shoot the shotgun around the corner until it was empty with zero personal risk to yourself, but you chose not to. At the end, you could have easily pulled the shield back without harming Qiu’li to fight against Huli or alternatively moved backwards until Rosario could back you up, but you chose not to.
The point of having strong students in classes is not so they can show off how much better they are than others to crush their spirits, but to have students able to uplift those who are struggling and actually have the opportunity to show their worth as actual leaders. Try as you might to keep going solo, you’re going to hit an impossible wall at some point or another and the very same people you consider beneath you today will climb over it without an issue in Years 2 and 3 because they took the time to actually develop their relationships with other classmates and formed teams that can do far more than any one person can individually.
If you want to compete in the Vytal Festival, you’re going to need to find three other people you can work together with by the beginning of next year. Consider that the next time you want to write someone off the moment you meet them.
