The sun was already setting when the four-armed huntress strolled into the basketball court. Not that the late hour stopped most of the people there as the stadium lights kept the recreation area bright as day, with a sparce number of other students hanging out by the soccer fields and tennis courts, half seriously playing these civilian sports.
While the trainees at Haven got plenty of exercise and physical activity throughout their daily combat lessons and physical training, many still felt that they had energy to burn after classes which was the reason Ruqa had bothered to come out here anyway.
Sporting some new clothes she got back when she was visiting family in Argus, Ruqa was by all appearances doing pretty alright for herself. She wasn't failing any classes which was amazing and she had loads of free time to herself now. But regardless of that she felt... unsatisfied. Bored. So she set out to do something, anything to satisfy her mind.
She could do all the training she could want back inside the school but even for a muscle head like her there were only so many times she could wail on a punching bag for fun. So that's why she had a basketball instead of boxing gloves today.
She stepped inside the empty half court, boxed in by fence walls, and started to play.
The sound of dribbling, sneaker soles on concrete, and minor sounds of effort were all that anyone could hear.
Shooting up into the air with ease that some highschool varisty player would probably be jealous of, she slams the ball through the hoop and hangs of the edge of the metal ring. Then suddenly backflipping into a handstand until she is back on the ground with a mildly amused look on her face.
She collects the ball again and backs up to the three-point line, tensing up to make a shot.
"YEET!"
The huntress makes the shot as it falls towards the hoop. Waiting with batted breath as it soars and exhaling with disappointment as it rebounds right back at her face.
"Tsk assburgers..." she mutters as she catches it and tries again and again.

So... Therapy sessions. That was something new to get used to.
Ever since the whole deal with Raul and his expulsion happened, they had instilled mandatory therapeutic visits once a week to all Haven students as a way to try weed out the clearly psychotic and maniac, or help out the ones that were going through a hard time.
And if you didn't wanna go, then housing and tuition would not be paid by Mistral anymore... This irked me the wrong way since it kinda suggested that only the poor students were liable to become troublemakers...
Needless to say, I was not happy with this. But there wasn’t a lot I could do about it, so I was just coming out from my weekly session. Those had been... Interesting, to say the least.
We didn’t talk a lot, at least not about important therapy stuff... And I appreciated that as I didn't want to put myself in the spotlight considering my legal situation. But the doctor still gave me a couple pointers here and there and asked me to give them a try.
We agreed that I needed a pastime. Even though I told him at first that I had my music, but then he corrected himself, saying I could use hobbies in which I actually got to interact with people. Since he believed I was isolating myself too much with my training and studies.
So there I was, willing to give it a shot, in a most literal sense.
Haven had quite a few sports facilities within the campus. And considering we were a school for people with superhuman abilities, it was to be expected that a few of us would take to practicing different sports and the like... So this was probably as good as any place to find some new acquaintances.
I kinda liked soccer, mostly for the strategic aspect of it. And because you didn’t have to be particularly tall to be good at it... There was the thing about having to run around a lot, though. And there was only so much you could do with a soccer ball if you didn’t have a lot of people, especially before you bored yourself to death.
Same with a lot of other team sports. So I was aiming for something a little different.
Basketball... It was certainly not my forte. Considering I was barely above a meter and a half tall. But it had a couple interesting things going on, like a lot of pauses, a small court, and small teams. And I liked all of those things. I played every now and then in the past, but never enough that I could call myself a good player.
Still, I was just aiming to play around a bit, not to win the national championship. And as I approached the court, I noticed that I wasn’t the only one that had gotten the same idea.
Ah! Ruqa Reyes. The only Haven student that out-limbed me! 6 to 5, to be precise... With curiosity in my eyes, I approached the cyborg woman shooting three-pointers on the court. Leaning against a nearby wall as I watched her go at it for a while.
She was... She was something alright... Well, to be honest, I didn’t know her very well. Since I only interacted with her during the Vital festival and that was about it.
I’ve seen her around, and she seemed to be pretty normal, a little loud and energetic, but charming at the same time. All in all, Ruqa was a pretty decent girl, in line with what I had heard about her from the Argus Limited mission.
So yeah, that was pretty much the same as not knowing her. Wich was bad, considering I had been a student for almost a year now and I didn’t know a lot of people more than in a passing manner. Plus, after everything that happened lately, I see no harm in checking how people were doing.
Wanting to make my presence known. I whistled in appreciation after a particularly nice shoot on her part. Waving at her once she noticed I was there.
-Sup Reyes, how’s it going?- I called out as I began to make my way towards her. At the time I was wearing some black shorts and a pink sports shirt. With my hair tied in a ponytail, it was clear as day what my intentions were.
-I was planning on fooling around here for a bit, is the other half of the court free...? Unless you are up for a game, of course...- I wondered aloud in a challenging tone. Planning to goad her into accepting my direct and inconspicuous invitation.
Worst case scenario, she would outclass me so bad she’d make a fool out of me. So I had nothing to lose then since I was already a fool!
Besides, I really wanted to check on my schoolmates a little more. So situations like what happened with Raul and Holly wouldn’t repeat again...

Unprepared to deal with someone talking to her, any sounds of basketball suddenly cease as she grabs the ball out of the air. Ruqa freezes in place and scans the courtyard for the source of that voice. The face of a certain lizard faunus is quickly recognized and Ruqa's own lights up like a heat lamp.
"Oh! Hi! You're Bianca right?" Ruqa laughs, cradling the ball under her arm. Evidently she didn’t mind the interruption at all, matter of fact she was pleased to see another person. While she did initially come out to the basketball court just to be alone with her thoughts that could only last for so long until Ruqa eventually got sick of her own thoughts. Right now a distraction was welcome and this other girl was looking to be just that.
To be completely honest, Ruqa didn’t know jack anything about Bianca besides what she learned in their Vytal match together: the fact that she had a lizard tail and had a cool semblance. The tail thing probably wasn’t worth mentioning as she supposed faunus didn’t expect it to be a recurring conversation topic. Or maybe they did talk about tails privately amongst each other, grooming tips and all that, but that was nothing that Ruqa would be privy to.
"I remember you, you threw a rock at my head, y'know at the Vytal Festival," she gestures offhandedly at what was, to her recollection, their only real interaction. She smirks at the old memory, "You gave me a real run for my money in our fight, heh. I would have done better if Arno didn't... you know."
Ruqa puts a half-closed hand to her own head and makes a "Kapow" noise in what one could interpret to have something to do with a cannonball meeting someone's face.
"But naahh it was all great when uhh..." Ruqa begins to ramble before she realizes that she couldn't recall anything 'great' happening within that 15 minute fight. Surely a fight between someone like Bianca and Ruqa would be a tale for the ages! She continued to rack her head until she caught onto a fresh line of thought and followed it without wasting too much time.
"...When you hit all of us with your semblance! That was cool," she nods to herself, proud of being able to recall the details of the fight.
"And when Alice!.........." Ruqa starts but can't bring herself to finish that sentence and now she wants to laugh but can't bring herself to find the humor in it.
The humor of the situation was probably there, somewhere deep in her memory. Maybe a lobotomist could have found it if they dug it out from beneath all the repressed memories and shared trauma.
The brave huntress lowers her face in her hands, just remembering it all.
Fuck. FUCK! It was so cringy.
She was so cringy. It was bad.
Not a single person that day left satisfied about the battle. Where was the sportsmanship? The camaraderie between opponents and pushing each other to further heights? That week was just getting her face ground into the mud and betrayal. Ruqa herself wasn’t any better than anyone on her team mind you. The worst side of her was caught on television and she had to wonder whether people would recognize her for her efforts with the Argus Limited or for her disappointing show at Vytal.
Even the winners left unsatisfied. The ones who should have felt proud of their accomplishments and enjoyed being pushed to their own limits. Was it possible to feel proud after having won against the team who couldn't keep the contents of their stomachs to themselves??
What the hell was Ruqa supposed to say to this person? Someone who probably had their experience at Vytal ruined because of her and her team? Apologize for being a bad fight? Beg for mercy? Because right now Ruqa was starting to feel that the girl in front of her would be within her legal rights to demand their executions.
It would be impolite to scream in embarrassment so Ruqa lifts her head up and looks back at Bianca.
"Hi Bianca. My name is Ruqa. Do you want to play basketball?" she begs.
The lone basketball rolls across the half court, judgingly. WC: 715/1077 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb

It occurred to me that I didn’t think this through at all...
As Ruqa began talking, the awkwardness in the air began to become more and more palpable with every passing second. Yep, that was pretty much to be expected considering that... Well, we didn’t know each other, nor had interacted outside that bizarre Vital fight so many months ago.
The fact that I had come from the shadows and invited her to play basketball out of nowhere probably had something to do with that as well. But whatever the case, I would try my best to salvage the situation. Although, I wouldn’t be putting my money on actually succeeding.
-That sounds reasonable. 9 out of 10 times that someone throws a rock at you, you can bet it’s gonna be me! The other is Berwyn-
I said with a noticeably forced smile as I set my hands on my hips trying to appear secure. Then again, I didn’t know if Ruqa had even met Berwyn before, so chances were I was just confusing her more.
Changing the subject to a certain blonde trainee actually brought a genuine smile to my face. My man Arno, what a fucking trooper. You could say he was fighting for both teams during that fight... But in the end, I needed to win at the time, so I would take any advantage I could find.
-Ah. Yes. I was actually surprised to see Arno alive and well on the next day, a part of me figured out you would kill him before midnight... That was a joke- I added unnecessarily to my small banter before falling silent for a few seconds, unsure about how to continue the conversation.
But soon enough, I remembered something neat that happened in the fight! Or at least neat enough to be worth mentioning. -And you yeeted me all the way to where my partners were...! And they didn’t catch me... For some reason...-
Ohhh... Yeah, I had actually forgotten about that. Probably because I tend to use Reynard as a scapegoat for all my frustrations regarding Vital... As I should, because he sucks ass. But the other two were not exactly innocent.
-I’m actually glad you beat up Ryan a little, he kinda deserved it for spacing out. And Artur...Welp. I guess he was the real winner of that fight. Amirite?- I called out as I winked at Ruqa, sporting a smile that wavered considerably once she mentioned a certain wolf faunus.
-I remember that... I guess you could say little Alice was so shaken by my performance that she decided to share her fluids with me. And even in front of everyone! That’s a... Yeah, that was scandalous-
…
Holy shit this was so awkward! Not even stupid jokes were having any effect! Why did I believe it was a good idea to come and challenge a random girl to a basketball match? This was not a sports anime!
At the very least Ruqa seemed to agree, if her burying her face on her hands was any indication.
Soon enough, she seemed to get a hold of herself. Looking directly at me and presenting me with a precious escape from that nightmare. Offering her a smile, I silently nodded in acceptance.
-Hello Ruqa. My name is Bianca... So, best out of five?
I saw a basketball rolling near me, so I decided to pick it up with my tail... But those things are kinda big, so it slipped from my tail as I was trying to bring it to my hands, bouncing undisturbed towards a nearby wall.
Mouth agape in disbelief. I felt my left eye twitching.
-Just... Have a little mercy, as you can see, I’m not very good- I commented as I walked to grab the ball, this time with my hands as a normal person would. Before playfully throwing it towards Ruqa with perhaps a little more strength than what was necessary.
-Looser get’s the other a drink from the vending machine?-

Her complete set of arms extended forward to catch the hurling projectile with ease, gripping onto it like an octopus about to squish a giant clam.
The second year trainee tilts her head to take a good look at Bianca, seeing that her embarassement closely mirrors her own. She is only silent for a moment before she bursts into a cackle.
Man, what the hell, it seems like she and Bianca were somewhat like minded about their fight and the troubles of Team MARS and MSRA were surprisingly similar! Both Bianca and her had high hopes for their fights but on the day of the events they came to the late realization that they had bad chemistry with teammates they picked, became aware that they could not rely on their "friends" to watch their backs, and at the end of the day were feeling a bit disgraced about the whole thing, but they were sensible enough to leave the animosity in the fight pit.
It was a bit of a mind opener for Ruqa who only ever known her own perspective on the losers side of the fight and the assumptions she made of the other team. Maybe the Amity Festival really was something to bring people together and show that they had more in common with the other competitors than they thought! Or, at the bare minimum, perhaps the spirit of sportsmanship wasn't dead after all.
Ruqa nervously laughs while twisting the end of her hair around her finger. "Sheesh girl, looks like we've both got it bad! Honestly I thought you'd be mad about what happened back there... I mean, I probably would be if I was in your position, hahaha..."
With a clap of her hands, she is once again prepared to let this awful scene slide and try to pretend to be normal again. "But since you're so forgiving let's be square then! That stuff was a long time ago so no sweat!"
"Also, about me and Arno... Don't you worry about it, I've got it all under control..." Ruqa laughs heartedly. Despite the words coming out her mouth her tone is surprisingly cold, like frost on steel plate.
"Anyway! I'll take that bet!" Ruqa perks up, now all smiles with all traces of her previous mood disappearing so quickly that it almost seems like a trick of the eye. "A drink would be really good right about now."
With one hand Ruqa lets go of the ball and lets it roll along her shoulders. Only then does she lets the ball hit the ground and she starts dribbling her way over to Bianca's side of the court.
"But don't worry about being good or not. From what I've seen you're no slouch, plus you've already beat me once~," Ruqa grins impishly, "Then again, if you ain't so hot on the court I'll still have fun either way!"
Ruqa dives forward with little regard for technique. The only choice for Bianca is to challenge the other huntress before Ruqa can take a shot at the net or get out of the way! WC: 516/1593 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb MA Rank [F]

Huh? Me being mad at Ruqa? Why? I didn’t understand exactly what the four-armed girl was trying to imply. I was mad at my team because... Well, who wouldn’t?
Reynard didn’t even show up, Arthur did jackshit and seemed unapologetic about it. And Ryan spaced out so hard he barely managed to get some shots on Alice and by then Ruqa had almost depleted his aura already.
Holy shit, if anything Arno had been a better teammate than those three... Also, Alexandros, what a fucking chad. Anyway, I was really curious about this now, especially to know if I had done something that could have led Ruqa to believe I was upset with her or something.
-Sure... You are... Forgiven I guess? I don’t know why tho. Why would I be mad at you, girl?- I asked away, tilting my head to the side in clear confusion. Whatever the case, I would smile back at her laughter as we prepared ourselves for the game.
-You want that drink? Then come and get it...- I teased Ruqa while squaring my shoulders in anticipation for her move, I didn’t know how good or bad the other trainee was, one thing I knew is that she looked awfully motivated, and I was getting excited as well.
When Ruqa dived in my direction, it knew I had to do something. With my stature, I realistically had zero chances of blocking that ball if I let her shoot undisturbed, so I needed to steal it right then before it was too late.
I got in front of her as she tried to pass me by, forcing her to try and do something unless she wanted to crash facefirst into me... I really hoped she didn’t want that, so I crossed my fingers on that.
Luckily, before that could come to pass, I found an opening to exploit. It was a close call and she would have gone straight for the point had I not done that, but I managed to snatch the ball out of her grasp by ducking low as she bounced it on the floor.
Just so she knew that being little also came with some advantages!
But now I had the ball... And realized I had come to play without any real semblance of a strategy in mind. And Ruqa would soon enough try to steal the ball back if I didn’t do something to avoid it.
So I basically panicked and tried to shot for a three-pointer... Needless to say, I failed miserably as the ball bounced off the ring. But I had accounted for that since I already knew I had really shitty accuracy, so I began running even before the ball missed the mark.
Managing to get the ball in my grasp again, I used my aura to get a good jump that allowed me to dunk that thing into the ring. Nice, nailed it... I was just in the middle of smiling to myself when I realized something.
Was using your aura even allowed? I actually didn't know, and it was pretty evident that I had used it back there. For a second, I feared that I had opened the floodgates to making this game much more interesting than I had originally conceived...
-You know what... I take offense on that, I’m hot wherever I go- I called out with a smirk of my own, more to fool around than to actually taunt the cyborg girl -And I'm also having fun...- Picking up the ball again, I tossed that big round thing in Ruqa’s direction. I believed you were supposed to do that as far as the TV portrayed it, so I figured out that would be about right.
-By the way, how is class Green doing nowadays? Is Shadecloack as strict as usual?- I asked aloud while Ruqa prepared for round two. I didn’t know if it was the right time to be making idle conversation, but I hoped it would give me a couple extra seconds to recover and actually start thinking things through this time.
Basketball in hand, Ruqa moves forward across the court, taking great strides with no attempt at trickery at her first attempt at scoring. As a starting gambit it was crude but if she could make her first push hard enough she could earn herself an easy point. But rising to the occassion, Bianca rushes forward to counter her offense, not backing down from a challenge. And that was the way it was meant to be! If Bianca had allowed Ruqa to walk over her, without giving that little bit of push-back, Ruqa would have never respected her. But just like before, the lizard faunus meets Ruqa’s charge head-on and this time it pays off.
Using her smaller size to take advantage of an opening, Bianca takes an opportunity to take the ball away from Ruqa and breezes through Ruqa’s attempts to retake possession.
Ruqa very nearly retakes the ball as Bianca misses a shot but the girl maintains control of the game, grabbing the basketball once again as the lizard faunus to launches herself up into the air like she had caught a gust of wind blowing in the right direction and slam dunk it. Point one to Bianca.
Ruqa eyebrows rise as she watches Bianca’s stunt, now clearly aura empowered, and laughs despite taking the L on this round. “Ah~ so that’s how it’s gonna be, eh? Maybe someone’s being a bit too serious about winning a basketball game~ Guess I need to step my game up,” Ruqa says, promising some basketball retribution. If Bianca was willing to use aura to boost her basketball skills then Ruqa would do the same in return.
Bianca lobs the ball back in Ruqa’s direction, letting go of her possession and giving Ruqa another chance to take offense. How generous of her.
“Eh, Shadecloak is fine. She’s strict but she’s fair, mostly. You can try to get used to her heartless taskmaster sthick but that leaves you open for when she’s really scary~” says Ruqa.
“Class Green, hmm, dunno I mostly ignore what they’re doing. I think we had a trainee from our class go off the deep end into crazy town a while back but I can’t be bothered to keep track of names,” commented Ruqa, uncaringly.
“Any reason you wanted to know? Trying to help class red get an advantage over us?” She winks. “We’ll see how much that will help you. But don’t get distracted~ you’re facing me right now, don’t you forget!”
For the second round, Ruqa lets her aura boost her movements, increasing her athleticism by double. She starts off with a dribble fast enough to make someone dizzy, taking advantage of having four hands to abuse the ball with. She takes a slower approach, waiting for Bianca to try and steal the ball away from her again where she would take advantage of her confusing movements and skirt around her opponent last second. Despite this show of aura enabled dexterity, Ruqa doesn’t get as far as she thought she would.
“Well, well, well. You’re actually doing work against me. Huh. Didn’t expect that. Size doesn’t matter that much apparently,” Ruqa laughs but it is a little strained. Now that Bianca was putting in so much effort to play against her, Ruqa felt she should at least be able to give the other trainee a challenge, something close to that level of excitment they had when fighting against one another. If she couldn’t do that, then what was she even doing?
By this point, Bianca would be able to take the basketball again. After all, Ruqa had been given the ball last round so this time she resigned herself to playing defender.
“Don’t think I’m going easy on you!” Ruqa says, ready to face off the other girl for their third round. She would be playing all defensive this time, opening up her arms like a web to block a shot coming at all angles. What she was hoping was to stop any chance of Bianca getting another point and find an opportunity to grab the ball and make her own play again.
There was only so much time left in this game, but maybe if Ruqa could score at least one point that would be enough.

-Got caught in the moment... We never agreed to any rules though!- I replied when Ruqa mentioned how serious I seemed to be going at this game. And by the look on her face, I knew I could only expect the four-armed woman to respond in kind.
This was kind of exciting, to be honest. Seldom I had a chance to just let loose and fool around for a bit. And as much as I was in a huntsman academy, I couldn’t say that I particularly enjoyed sparring, especially if it was a close match like my fights with Kishka.
Yeah, usually I was all serious and focused for those, so I welcomed being able to burn some energy and push my body limits without having to take it so seriously either. So with an easy smile on my face, I heard Ruqa talk about class green while I waited for her to restart the game.
-Ohh, never met scary Shadecloack before, she had been pretty nice in my experience, but seeing her mad must be a sight to behold- I responded with a tinge of curiosity, I didn’t interact with the faunus teacher as often as Ruqa would since she wasn’t my homeroom teacher, but she seemed decent in the classes I had with her.
-Huh... Didn’t think you’d keep to yourself. Always pegged you as the kind of person who’s the life of the party, to be honest- I said, doing my best not to frown when she dismissively mentioned one of her class going rogue not too long ago.
I mean, I hated sounding judgemental, but... Isn’t that the kind of stuff that you should be worried about? Or was that just me? Whatever the case, I didn’t want to ruin the mood, so I didn’t bring it up right then.
-Well, maybe I am... Not necessarily to get an advantage, but see if we can improve ourselves and shit, see if we can prevent the crazy ones from flying under the radar...- I mentioned just as the next round was about to begin. Luckily I didn’t have that much time to focus on how extremely ironic that was when coming from the girl that made a national sport out of hiding shit from her peers...
Ruqa shot forwards again, and this time she was way faster. I was even having a hard time tracking the movement of the ball between her mechanical arms. I tried to steal the ball again, but I watched as the huntress began going full throttle.
I had to step back to make some distance between us least she surpasses me and leave me in the dust, and in just the last second I managed to steal the ball from Ruqa, immediately I shot forwards, she pursued me but It was too late, jumping again, I scored the second point.
-That’s what she said- I responded, never missing the chance when so easily handed to me. Now panting from the exertion, I received the ball and began planning my next move. Now I was on the offensive, which was an entirely different experience since I actually had to come up with something...
Jogging towards Ruqa in her fully defensive form, I exhaled loudly as I came to a screeching halt just one or two meters away from her. I had a decent shot from there, but I wasn’t a decent shooter so I feinted a jump instead, my feet barely leaving the ground and hopefully making Ruqa commit enough for me to have an opening to reach the hoop.
Sadly, all that my efforts bought me was a chance to collide with the much larger, much heavier woman as I attempted to surpass her position. Whatever the case, It seemed like I somehow managed to score in my last ditched panic shot before falling to the ground.
-Ow... That didn’t go as I expected... But hey! Looks like I scored...- As I got up, I realized I had technically won already, as it was the better of five... How the hell did that happen? I had no clue, nor did I know if we were supposed to keep playing the remaining points or not.
Whatever the case I would go with the flow, if she wanted to keep playing I would oblige, if not, I could use a short break and likely reclaim my drink from the machine, hoping Ruqa didn’t choose anything too weird for me.

It seemed like Bianca was having a good time which cheered Ruqa up immediately.
"Me, life of the party?" Ruqa says, pointing at herself with disbelief. "Nah you're imagining things."
Seriously, Ruqa was known for being a lot of things but popular wasn't one of them. Sure, maybe in her first year but Ruqa had been flying solo ever since.
"Keep people from flying under the radar, huh?" Ruqa grimaces, remembering the gone rogue trainee Qui'li, one of her first partners at Haven, as well as the exiled, presumed dead ex-mercenary Solomon, who's head Ruqa personally broke a plank of wood over. "Can't say I've done a very good job of that. Maybe you'll do better..."
In the second round, the ball moves dizzyingly around Ruqa as she dribbles circles around Bianca, always keeping the ball barely inches away from the girl's reach as she tries her best to keep control. Taking care not to trip over her own feet, Ruqa tries to spin around and dodge past Bianca who surprisingly steps back off to give her more space.
Now that Ruqa needed to push forward she couldn't keep up her quick movements. The dribbling slows down as her endurance flags and she struggles to keep up with Bianca's energy. She went too hard too early, spent too much effort defending that she can't keep it up until the end. Bianca swoops in last second before Ruqa can make a shot and is able to score, turning the second round in her favour.
Ruqa gives a mock applause at Bianca, praising the other girl for outplaying her. She can't help but snort when Bianca quickly takes advantage of her accidental innuendo.
"HAH! Fuck you! I already say a lot of dumb shit and I don't need people putting words in my mouth," Ruqa yells with a grin to match Bianca's. "That was good catch though."
"Come on, let's go around again" says Ruqa, holding up one hand beckoning Bianca to come closer.
The third round, Ruqa prepared herself against Bianca's renewed attempts to score. She sees Bianca about to leap and raises her arm to swipe at the ball but meets nothing as Bianca doesn't commit much to Ruqa's detriment. She had overextended, leaving her net wide open, and Ruqa begins to sweat, knowing that she wouldn't be able to return to position in time. She holds her ground for one last stand and the combined stubborness of both trainees ends in a direct collision as Bianca's momentum carries through as she slams into Ruqa.
Both trainees collide and Ruqa buckles over, slamming into the ground. Breath knocked out of her, Ruqa can hear the swoosh of the net as the ball flies through, marking Bianca's win.
Ruqa lifts herself off the ground, looking around to look at the fallen ball and back at Bianca with blank stare. She then laughs, unable to contain herself.
"Shit Bianca, you got me outmatched. Three for three holy crap. I never stood a chance hahahah!"
Ruqa's laughter subsides but the grin on her face remains as she pulls herself off the ground.
"Guess this makes me a two-time loser now. You got me beat at Vytal and basketball. You really are on a different level than me, huh?" she says, pushing her hair up with a quiet sigh.
Ruqa dusts herself off, making it clear they were pretty much finished here. She absolutely wasn't going to take a pity round and risk making it 4-to-0 instead.
"Ah whatever. I do owe you that drink now, don't I?" Ruqa smirks and pats Bianca on the shoulder. "Come on, it's not too far."
Ruqa hops to her feet, plucking the ball off the ground and stowing it under her arm, she leads them out of the ball court.
It was a short walk over to a little red vending machine, frequented by any students that spent time in the outdoor recreation area and bolted to the wall to try to protect it from superpowered young adults. Ruqa tosses the ball back to Bianca as she faces the vending machine number pad and reaches for her coin pouch.
"You know, when I was back at Argus they had this weird drink that was supposed to taste like ramen noodles. I don't know what it was made out of but the taste was spot on. Nasty as hell. Lucky for you, they don't have it here," says Ruqa recounting some old memories.
Apparently Haven Academy only stocked sports drinks, fruit juice, canned coffee, and any of the big brand colas. Guess if you were opperating a vending machine you just wanted what was familiar and whatever would sell. Boring in Ruqa's opinion but she supposed school staff didn't want to stock anything actually interesting.
Two cans fell through the slot and Ruqa shoved her arm down to the shoulder to try and reach them.
"Think I could nab some extra drinks out of here too?" Ruqa mutters, giving it her best to use her arms inhuman flexibility to grab something.
"Hah! Score." Ruqa says, after toppling an extra can off of the bottom rack.
In total Ruqa now had three different drinks in her hands. "Atlessian Winter, Tapioca Heaven, and Park's On The Go Ice Coffee." Ruqa chimes off, sounding the names off.
She jokingly juggles the three cans, before catching them all and holding out the Atlessian Winter out to Bianca, using her height to pull it back last second, just out of reach but eventually giving the drink up.
"Drink up, you've earned it. Lemme know if you want something else tho," Ruqa says, waiting for Bianca to open hers before she cracks open another can. WC: 951 / 2553 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb MA Rank [F] Athletics [F]

-Yeah... I don’t think anyone has done a good job about that, to be honest. So cheers for that to change- I retorted when she mentioned keeping tabs on the weirdoes of Haven. And as I listened to Ruqa’s small commentaries and responses, there was one thing that was clear in my mind... Had this girl always been so negative?
She had seemed so confident and full of life during our match at Vital... But then again, that had been a whole year ago, I wasn’t the same I had been back then, fortunately, so It was a little unfair for me to expect the same from the four-armed girl.
It did bring a smirk to my face when she cussed me for the dumb innuendo, so that got me back into a good mood. And also seemed to bring me a wave of good luck as somehow I managed to finish that game with a perfect score.
-Sometimes you just are in the zone I guess. Kinda like the lighting that never strikes twice- I shrugged off. Even without proper basketball training, it seemed all those hours of physical exercise translated well to other areas than fighting.
Nevertheless, I could only laugh awkwardly when she mentioned our fight... Two times loser was maybe a little harsh, and that shit about me being on another level? Another level of what? I just won a fight and a dumb basketball game, that didn’t mean I was better than her or some shit.
Good qualities that I didn’t know since I wasn’t exactly best friends with Ruqa, and that kinda was the whole reason I had butted in with my challenge in the first place. But she looked like she was being too hard on herself, so I hoped to cheer her up somewhat.
Vital for me had been... Bad, looking back on it, it was definitely a bad experience even at the times when it was good because I was in too toxic of a mindset. It was supposed to be a mock tournament were young and dumb people got to test their training, and I took it as if everyone in the opposite team was my enemy.
-Tsk, don’t beat yourself over it. Vital was not one of my proudest moments... I kinda went too hard at it when it was just a dumb game- I sheepishly admitted, giving that event all the importance that it deserved, which was nothing at all.
Whatever the case, the promise of free shit quickly got me on the move. So onwards we went, to the vending machine. Wich was apparently of the boring variety of Ruqa’s words held true.
Once there, I was witness to the girl’s strange display of flexibility, and could only whistle in appreciation when she managed to snatch a bonus can out of it.
Moreso, I couldn't avoid staring at Ruqa's cybernetic arms for a little too long. Those were not something you see every day, it was kinda captivating watching them move and bend since they looked so realistic... Realizing I was being rude, I set my gaze on Ruqa's face.
-Tapioca Heaven? I think I’m going to pass on that one... And you say this isn’t even that weird... Remind me to never approach a vending machine without an adult to protect me- I called out jokingly, cringing at the mental image that those two words conjured in my mind, it may have been good if I tried it but... No.
The one Ruqa picked up for me sounded the nicest of the bunch, I wasn’t really a coffee gal anyway... Now, if I could only snatch it from her hands! -You are evil, Ruqa Reyes. Why must you exploit my secret weakness?- I exclaimed overdramatically before she handled the can to me.
The drink was decent. A little unusual for my tastebuds, but not bad at all. So I merely nodded towards Ruqa and stopped to enjoy the beverage for a second while I recovered from the physical exertion. Deciding to make some small talk along the way.
-So, what does miss Reyes get herself into nowadays? Are you taking missions and the like? Or focusing on other things? I know you are the one I have to thank for the creation of the internet at the very least...-

There is a real temptation to roll her eyes as Bianca tries to console her on her loss, as though Ruqa would break apart at the seams just by losing one basketball game. Did she really seem like the type? Maybe Ruqa did put on the self-depreciation thing a bit too much and for that she decided to back pedal hard on whatever sad vibes she was apparently putting out into the world.
Really, it was a bit grating that Bianca had chosen this moment to exercise this saint-like humility when Ruqa was just stating facts. Bianca won their Vytal match and their little basketball game and that was something to be proud of. Yeah they weren't serious and nothing important was on the line, but in Ruqa's mind, they still had to count for something. Or was beating Ruqa not even worth mentioning?
Hell, if their roles were opposite, if Ruqa was the top dog, winning their basketball game three-to-zero, she would be enjoying her victory and rubbing it in the other girls face. Wasn't that much better? Get some friendly rivalry going on between them, not this bullshit "everyone's a winner" crap.
Or maybe that was just her being a fucked up friend. Shit, she really shouldn't be having these kinds of thoughts. Bianca's just being nice even if that brand of nice is utterly pointless. Just let it slide, Ruqa.
"Naah I'm not beating myself up about stuff like that. Still it's useful to know where you stand and all." Ruqa says with her back turned to Bianca as she leads the way to the vending machine.
Ruqa fiddled with her prosthetic arms as she casually attempts light theft from the vending machine and while her back was turned, Ruqa felt Bianca's eyes on her arms all the same. That was fine, expected even. Ruqa had no right to complain, she made a concious decision to design them after all. No matter if she had four, two, one, or zero, it would be the same familiar reaction. But despite knowing herself better, Ruqa has to control herself to avoid flinching from Bianca's gaze. It wasn't like that, Bianca was cool. This was fine.
Ruqa hands Bianca a can of Atlessian Winter, smiles as she tries to grab it out of her hands, and nods when the lizard faunus seems to be happy with her soda.
Ruqa cracks open her can of Tapioca Heaven, takes a swig and makes a concerned face after she downs it. "Hmm. Yeah. This is interesting. I've never had a soft drink I had to chew before"
Tapioca Heaven had tapioca in it. Go figure. Guess Ruqa had the wrong idea about Haven not carrying any cool drinks. It was kinda neat but not something she would buy again. Damn now she had to trick someone else into trying it. Might be good for a laugh.
Ruqa had to smile as she is reminded of that goofy nickname given to her once people started paying attention to her. "Heh yeah right. I'm the 'Inventor of the Internet'. One of the many memes about me."
She takes another bite of her drink as she thinks about it again. "It's kind of weird they gave me that nickname. Like, to be honest at the time I didn't even care what we were supposed to be protecting. Hell, I was never even in the same car as the antenae bits. That was, like, Colton. I have to wonder where he's at..."
Ruqa has to move on to the next topic, unless she wants to linger on Argus Limited for the ten-thousandth time. She didn't know if Bianca was actually interested in hearing that story again or if she was just saying it for it's own sake. So yeah, Ruqa was the "Hero of Argus", but she didn't need to be constantly reminded of it. If people were expecting some larger than life personality, sorry but Ruqa wasn't going to put on a heroic pose and vow to protect all trains everywhere; she wasn't fricking Arno after all.
"Missions, huh? Yeeah can't wait till I can get back out there, risk my life against the next thing." Ruqa says, shrugging her shoulders. "Gotta keep it fresh, keep things exciting, and that."
"But, uh, besides that just school I guess," Ruqa admits, scratching the back of her head, wondering if Bianca was expecting something more exciting from her. "I'm planning on taking Remedial Science, Dust Theory, and Geography next semester. I'm probably good for it..."
"Oh but also I've kinda been into parkour lately." says Ruqa as she brings out a scroll and leans over to show Bianca.
"There's this guy, NitroDust, who goes around the Wind and Ground Districts doing stunts on top of rooftops and highrises which is kinda fricken cool," Ruqa rambles on with a real shine to her eyes until she realizes that it wouldn't be good to seem too impressed by this sort of thing. "I mean, for a non-huntsman," she quickly adds.
"I mean. It could be good for a side-hobby when I'm not doing huntress crap, yeah?" she admits, non-chalantly.
"And what about Miss Sabbato? Keeping yourself out of trouble?? Or maybe trouble finds you, that's how it is with us huntresses. Say, I don't know much about what you've been up to since Vytal. Any crazy stories that I have yet to hear about? Or do you have some exciting plans you've got in the works?"

As I saw Ruqa having to chew up and swallow her drink, I felt validated in my decisión of staying the fuck away from that particular beverage. Some risks were just not worth taking.
Back to the Argus Limited stuff... I didn’t actually know a lot of it, my knowledge of the even was essentially memetic in nature. I knew Ruqa was famous for it, so I figured out she must have been the main actor of that mission... She probably was just being modest. Did that Colton dude had a meme on his name for the Argus stuff? Nope, so I rest my case.
Regarding regular missions and the like, she sounded like she had been on a break of some kind. Wanting to get back on track or something, and even if I wasn’t sure I shared her enthusiasm for it, I could only shrug at the mention. Hey, if that made her happy, good for her.
-Meh, I think I’m done with remedial stuff. I’m comfortable with my level right now. Don’t need to be a Ph.D. in those, just to be good enough not to suck- I replied when she mentioned classes, I really didn’t have a clear plan of what I was going to do in my second year, but I had a general idea at least.
-I may pick up dust studies as well, I started using that thing a while ago, but I’m not very good yet, so we may be classmates in that one... For the rest, I dunno, I still have to see what would be more useful for me-
Then she showed me that Nitro guy’s parkour video and I laughed aloud when she mentioned how all the pirouettes and jumps he was doing were impressive, but only for a non-huntsman -Ruqa, have you met me? I move with the speed and grace of a rock!- I said as I looked with interest at Ruqa’s scroll
-Oh yeah if I tried this shit my face would be on the line for a quick meeting with the ground. Have you done that before? I could show you some nice places around town- I asked while imagining the four-armed girl zooming through the roofs of the city.
Lockdown had to be lifted eventually. So I wouldn't mind walking up the streets a little myself. It felt like ages since I did that.
After listening to Ruqa’s response, I had to reflect for a little when it was my turn to keep the conversation rolling. What was the most noteworthy experience I had lately? That was a little hard to answer, but the first thing that came to mind was...
-I guess there’s Kerch... I helped Argent and Alice take care of that guy Solomon after he went the deep end... Well, deeper end than what he already was-
I said with a brief scowl as I recalled exactly how he got himself expelled from Haven. By trying to make Kishka kill him of all things... At the time I didn’t want to get involved with it due to not being there and not knowing either of the participants.
Right now? I didn’t doubt Kishka’s recollection of the matter in the least, not for one moment. If getting to know Kish wasn’t enough for me to pass judgment, then going to Kerch and being a first-hand witness of what that man did to the city was more than enough. If there was a hell, I hoped I got to kick his ass for all eternity in there.
Besides that, I made a quick mental list of all the things that happened since the last time I spoke with the four-armed huntress... And I was surprised when I realized there had been plenty of bad things...
Ryan almost killing himself and then going away, Holly succeeding where he failed, me failing to save Holly. Raul going out the Solomon® way. Lynn being fired; me failing at stopping the dust ward killer, putting my classmates in danger...
But there was also plenty of good things. Like walking through the city, having hot food and water, learning a lot of new things, having genuine fun every now and then...
Becoming friends Chloro and Kishka. Meeting Argent, Opal, and Theia; Looking up to Shade and Valeska... Knowing Berwyn...
Wiping that scowl from my face, I kept talking. -I did some missions here and there, as for cool anecdotes...- I keep digging in my head for any good stories, something impressive but also lighthearted. And soon enough I came with something I was quite proud of, as silly as it was.
-I managed to hook up with a famous singer. I won't kiss and tell, but she’s a real hottie, and doing that is pretty much the highlight of my whole existence... And they say being a huntress doesn’t pay!- Chuckling, I rested easy at knowing I had Aly’s number on my scroll in case we were in the mood, or just up for a good chat and having fun. She was a nice woman, tall, white silky hair, red eyes, alabaster skin...
Huh... Oddly similar to someone else I knew. Maybe I had a type after all? That was an interesting point to explore, but not one for this of all moments.
-As for plans... I'm looking into taking escort missions in the countryside for the time being. Our Homeroom teacher recommended I try those, so I will see where that takes me... I also considered working a little with Erytheia and her company, don’t know if it’s up my alley yet. But they always need a good huntsman every now and then, so it’s an open door after graduation-
From listening to Bianca it seemed like she was in a comfortable place when it came to Academy life, at least when it came to classes. Ruqa had to wonder if the other girl was just going through the motions of school too, as practically every student knew, the only way they were going to survive being Huntsmen was to stick to the practical, the combat, the things that Huntsmen actually needed to do their job well. It was just that Ruqa wanted to take this year to steer away from being a total musclehead thus the classes; after all she pegged herself as a jack-of-all trades kind of hunter. Although her less than stellar performance in the last few months might be proof that she might have steered too far in the academic direction.
Ruqa made a mental note to go through a whole new training regimen later. Maybe track down Shadecloak to see if they could write up a program that would suit Ruqa's unique situation and combat style.
"Yeah if we're in the same class I'm sure we can trade notes or something. Put our heads together eh and we might just be able to pass!"
Ruqa can't help but laugh as Bianca shows interest in the Nitro's video. "Yeah, you're as subtle as stone. I figured that out when you tackled me into the pavement, heh. You're a fairly sturdy lady when you want to be though."
Ruqa smiles as Bianca offers to show her around the city. It was big enough that there were so many places Ruqa would never be able to see but having a little tour could be fun, even more if there was room to run around in. "Damn that be fun. Just a couple hours of me and you out in town, I'm sure the whole city will be unrecognizable after we're done with it" Ruqa says, enthusiastic about the prospect.
Although Ruqa has to stop and give Bianca a real hard look when she hears about Kerch, but more notably her story with the ex-mercenary. "HAH! You've met Solomon too huh. Yeeesh. Sorry about to hear about that. Man was caustic as fuck. Like a goddamn pressure cooker filled with vinegar about to blow up in your face."
That dude was probably one of the worst things to come out of Haven. But at least after 10 minutes of breathing the same air as the man, Ruqa gained a new perspective on life. If someone as vile as that was around, how could she lose her temper on anything less? Hell, thinking back to those months, Arno was a saint compared to that bastard. She would call Arno her best friend before she recognized that guy as a human.
On a lighter note, Bianca lets Ruqa in on her previous encounters with the talented and famous, looking rather proud of herself leading Ruqa to connect dots in her head. Oh it was like that, was it? Oh Bianca!
"Oh I just KNOW that is a real good story behind that. A hook up with a famour singer, huh? The "highlight of your entire existence", huh???. It was that good huuuuuh???" Ruqa snickers all too cheerfully, giving Bianca a playful punch in the shoulder, trying to coax out an embarressed reaction out of the lizard faunus. "Hey, hey, hey, first times are nice, but I hear seconds are even better!"
"Sounds like you've got it made! Hey have you met her again? Honestly, I bet she'd love to have a huntress like you over again." Ruqa says, giving Bianca a wink in support. "You're, like, a real catch. A real lady-killer~"
"Hell, I know if I was the one picking you up, I would have taken you home a long time ago." Ruqa says idly as she takes another sip of her drink.
"Escort missions. Like for travelers and merchants?" suggests Ruqa, trying to think of what would need a huntsman escort outside of Kingdoms. "I guess that would be a good job for you. I bet you would be able to see a lot of Mistral's countryside if you're escorting things village to village."
Ruqa didn't have a great deal of knowledge domestic exports in Mistral but she supposed basic village supplies as well as things like raw materials, dust, lumber, and stone were always part of national trade even for some more disconnected communities.
"Also, I didn't know Erytheia had her own company! Isn't she only in her second year?" snickers Ruqa. "Hahah. I guess it makes sense, she seems like the pencil pushing kind of huntress."
Ruqa bites her lip as she considers it more. "I kind of think it might be weird to be hired by, like, an old classmate but it might end up that way especially with the handful of Cloudheads we have at Haven," Ruqa admits. "As long as there is a sense of trust and respect I guess that's alright. Just don't let them string you around and you'll be fine."
Ruqa polishes off her drink and yeets it into the bin perfectly, earning her a smile. "Say, in the future when we're graduated, let's keep on, as you said, looking out for each other and keep people from flying off the radar. If you're in a bind or need some help on a job, you can call on me and I'll do my best."
After all, by their second year there was a certain maturity to be recognized. While she had bad memories of being on teams she knew enough that solo hunters didn't always get happy endings. This is the only way Ruqa knew how to be helpful so if there was an opportunity for Ruqa's talents to be useful to anybody she felt inclined to do what she could.

-Assuming there’d be a city left. You mean- I replied, already thinking about places around the city that I could show Ruqa. I knew there were at least a couple construction sites that never got finished waiting for us to explore.
Was clowning around in an abandoned construction a dangerous prospect? Yes. Was it worse than a Beowulf charging in your direction or a gun trailed on your face? Not likely, so I didn’t think we would have much to worry about anyway.
Regarding Solomon, I wasn’t surprised to see Ruqa didn’t hold him in very high regard. So I merely nodded and shrugged a bit as we changed the topic for something a little more deserving of our time... For example, bragging about romantic conquests. Even if it had been less like conquest and more like Aladriel coming on to me and me offering about as much resistance as a cup of flan.
-It was my luckiest day ever... I was playing some music in Memorial Park. And she just approached from nowhere, we chatted for a bit, hit it off, and she invited me to her place... Let’s just say I learned many new things that night. And I’m looking forward to learning even more in the future-
I recalled with a proud, beaming smile on my face. Ruqa didn’t know me if she believed I would be embarrassed by something like that.
Now, regarding how Ali would be lucky to have me... It was probably the other way around. But I would take that W and hold to it tight nonetheless. I often didn’t take praise very well, but that was one of the few things in which I more than welcomed it. Especially from a girl like Ruqa...
Speaking of that. Well, it seemed miss Reyes decided to thread upon a dangerous terrain with her last phrase. I wondered if she was just being nice. Or actually serious about all that praise... Whatever it was, I decided it would be fun to test her either way.
-Is that so?- I said with a hum, hiding my mouth behind my soda can but still sending a curious look in her direction. -Feel free to try whenever you want, then. Who knows what may happen...- And with that, I went back to my drink. I knew I was much more blasé with that kind of stuff than most people, but honestly, I didn’t see the need to take it so seriously.
Anyway, the subject of missions came back once more. And Ruqa raised a pretty good point about it. Since it would allow me to see a portion of Mistral that I otherwise could not. -Ohh... Yeah, now that you mention it, I’m actually quite excited about that myself. I lived all my life here in the capital, so getting to know a bigger slice of the world is something I’m looking forward to-
Besides, it was good work, simple work. Just make sure the cargo arrived intact, make sure to keep as many people as I could from dying along the way... It was likely that some people I would fail to save. Such is the nature of the job. But that was a responsibility that I felt I needed to accept.
This brings us to the next point, working with other people... Honestly, I understood it was hard to believe it. But Erytheia was indeed the heiress to an important company.
What was someone with access to so many resources doing as a huntress? No fucking clue. I couldn’t even say I was agreed with it, quite the contrary, actually... But then again, it was not as if I had any right to judge anybody here, to begin with.
-Theia is... Pretty nice, actually. Not gonna lie, I kinda expected her to be one of those snobby rich kids, but she’s decent. I feel like I wouldn’t mind working for her. Besides, nothing wrong with establishing some connections while we are at it, right?-
Now, Ruqa’s proposal took me a little by surprise. -Looking to form connections yourself, Ruqa?- I joked a little, contemplating her question for a moment as I finished my drink and placed the can on the ground beside me.
-But yeah... Real talk, with how few active Huntsman there are in Mistral, the few left have to take care of ourselves, right?- With a smile, I nodded in acceptance. -Sounds like a plan... I’ll let you know if I ever feel like I’m going to need help with a job. Now you make sure to do the same, alright?-
Finger-gunning in her direction, I waited for her response. Thinking to myself that she probably had the right idea there. No need to do everything by myself after all. Asking for some help every now and then was also part of the job if you wished to stay alive...

Ruqa was not smart enough to untangle the meaning behind Bianca's words but it sounded to her like an invitation. Ruqa met it with a toothy smile of her own.
To be honest it was kind of a spur of the moment thing while Ruqa was freely teasing the other girl a bit. She didn't entirely plan on saying that last part aloud, mouth being faster than the brain and all. But with this reaction, Ruqa found that she didn't mind this reaction at all. "I'll uh keep that in mind," Ruqa says a bit awestruck, her mouth suddenly desert dry.
She crosses her arms and is silent for a moment and then suddenly laughs. "Maybe it's true to what they say. Flattery will get you ~everywhere~." Ruqa says with a wink.
She leaves it at that, a bit more open to the prospect now but not willing to take the leap herself. Maybe sometime that Ruqa wasn't making an obvious fool of herself.
As Bianca mulled over Ruqa's offer to support each other after graduation, the azul huntress smiles freely as the other girl promises to keep in contact but wavers for a second as Bianca tries to assure Ruqa that she will do the same for her. She recognized the validity of the huntresses words, no doubt she knew Bianca was capable enough to carry through on her side of the promise. Yet, Ruqa couldn't bring herself to actually believe it. "Yeah I'll let you know if I'm in need of help," Ruqa says, sounding like she was completely in agreement.
But truth be told, she knew that if it ever got to the point where she was genuinely desperate enough to ask for help, it would probably too late for her anyway. She had no intention on calling on that favour, no matter how appealing Bianca made it sound. It was no fault of anyone, it was just how Ruqa's brain operated.
Ruqa wasn't so hotshot confident in her abilities that she thought she could fight every battle alone but it wasn't as though having people by her side did her that much good so far. Besides, Ruqa would always rather put herself on the line for others than ask her friends to do the same for her. That was just how it always has been for Ruqa and if she had her way, that wouldn't change anytime soon.
Despite that fact, Ruqa would always be willing to extend a hand if her friends ever needed it. What was the point of having four arms otherwise?
So go fucking for it Bianca. You've won a yourself a selfless ally. See how far being Ruqa's friend gets you. "Maybe then I can show you how useful I can be. You got me beat in Vytal and basketball, but there's no one better than to have at your back than this huntress," says Ruqa, entirely self assured.
Ruqa takes a deep breath, feeling a lot better now. Satisfied even, despite not getting everything she wanted from their basketball game. There would always be next time though. It was getting late now and she didn't want to keep the other girl any longer.
"Mmm. I guess I'll see you around. This has been... fun, yeah. Let's do this again sometime. I'll eventually even the score Bianca, just you wait!" Ruqa says with a winning smile. She offers Bianca a final fist bump before picking up the basketball and heading back to the dormitory showers. Word Count: 584 Total Word Count: 5023 Ruqa Colour Hex: 54e1fb MA Rank [F] Athletics [F]
