[break][attr="class","nikki102"]WHAT THE KILLING IS FOR
[attr="class","nikki109"] The bite of the Ursai missed the faunus by inches, and the claw attack from the Grimm missed being fatal to Asterion by millimeters. It cut through the armor on his abdomen like a hot knife through butter and caused a superficial string of scratches where it penetrated through. The armor would just barely keep its structural integrity and stay on the body of the teenager, but it would definitely need to be replaced very soon if he survived this encounter. [break][break]
Contrary to popular belief, Aegle probably saved the life of the faunus by breaking his semblance when she did. It allowed him to be lucid enough to just barely dodge both attacks, when in his enraged form they would have come in too quickly for him to react once his aura was broken. It didn’t matter whether the crunch of its powerful jaws hit first or the immense strength and sharpness of its claws, because the other would have came a split second later to very quickly end the life of the then auraless trainee. [break][break]
Aegle succeeded in drawing the attention of the Ursa. It didn’t end the life of the Asterion with a second attack largely because she interjected herself and made herself such a beacon of negativity that it was hard for the monster to see anything else. It was a solid if suicidal plan, and her way of carrying it out was much more effective than her first attempt to make herself the target. [break][break]
A very similar attack pattern came the way of Aegle that was used against Asterion. Grimm weren’t exactly the smartest creatures and tended to have similar attack patterns. A massive paw went up in the air and briefly exposed its underbelly and came down in a pinning attempt, while the jaws came in for the kill. Aegle was nimble enough to dodge the paw slamming down and thus avoided getting killed immediately afterwards, but dodging the slam meant being more open to the jaws. While the monster was aiming for Aegle's torso, she managed to dodge just enough that it only got the bottom of her right leg instead. [break][break]
One disadvantage to having no capacity for thought was the absolutely terrible ability to assess threats and how strong they were. Sharp teeth crunched down on the girl’s right shin with enough force to completely shatter all the bones inside before severing the limb had they not been protected by aura. The next few seconds for the girl would perhaps be the most painful and terrifying of her life as she was thrown around like a rag doll by the monster who had a vice grip on the leg of the Atlesian the entire time with the same intense amount of pressure. If her aura broke, her leg would be gone in that very instant. She was tossed and turned in every which direction, up and down and all around like a god damned chew toy for several very uncomfortable seconds. [break][break]
The Grimm would adjust slightly to crunch down again in another attempt to break Aegle’s leg, but she would wriggle free as the extremely tight grip of the creature’s jaw loosened a few inches. Covered in slobber, she would be flung roughly twenty meters towards the wall and indeed crash land slightly ahead of Reynard and Asterion as her orange aura would flex but not break from the impact. If Asterion slowed down slightly, he could probably pick her up without losing too much ground. [break][break]
At this point, exhaustion was starting to set in for some of the trainees. Reynard’s muscles would start burning and starting to not respond as well as they normally would. They would spasm and slow down both his speed and fine motor control due to exertion, here at the worst possible time for such a thing to happen. Asterion’s muscles would ache pretty heavily as well, but he wouldn’t have any loss of function in those muscles just yet. He could push them for a bit longer and could drag Reynard along at least for now should be choose to with his remaining strength. Aegle was fine despite her exertions thus far, and Kishka was also more than fine in terms of stamina due to staying on the wall the entire time thus far and not exerting herself. [break][break]
In terms of aura, things were better. Asterion had his aura shattered and was mildly injured besides. Kishka was resting at her aura meter almost completely full, and Reynard’s aura was just slightly under sixty percent. He would find it hard to make use of that for offense due to being exhausted physically, but he was still in good shape in terms of aura and the ability to use his semblance in the same way that Kishka was. Aegle just had her aura flexed, but still had roughly twelve percent aura remaining after her brush with the enemy. [break][break]
Speaking of, both Ursai were now neck and neck with each other and charging towards the students and thus the wall. The trainees were about twenty meters from the wall at this point, with the ursa about thirty-five meters away from the wall and fifteen meters away from them. Due to the flagging stamina of two of the three trainees on the ground, that distance was almost certain to become shorter and shorter as they got closer to the wall. The climb back up would be extremely difficult, considering two exhausted people and one without any means of helping the others scale the wall would have to do it before the Ursai caught up to them and simply ripped them off of the wall and tore them to shreds. [break][break]
Plus, even if they made it up the wall, they still had to make sure that the Grimm below them didn’t just smash it down. They had to be destroyed, or they would simply batter away the stone walls or the metal gate to make it inside the city. Surviving while condemning others to die was a failure, and one worse than one that was limited to the strictly personal. They still had quite some time before backup was due to arrive, so they either needed a way to stall the advance of the Grimm or to take them out before they became a threat to the civilians inside the walls. [break][break]
It wasn’t going to be easy, certainly, but each of them had signed up for this one way or another. Each of them had signed up to a Huntsman Academy, and thus should have known that they’d hold the power of life and death for others at some point during their time here. They might have thought that sort of responsibility would not come until later, but life had a funny way of intervening when least expected.
