It was a rather beautiful day.
Latest of winter, early spring. Still a bit cool. But most of the snow had long melted away. They were in the forests that surrounded the school. Jay breathed out and then in again. In his mind could picture the days when this was his training ground as well. The large trees were good for climbing, for tracking, and for wilderness fighting. This was the kind of environment that a huntsman was most natural.
The trees were tall, ranging in height from 15 to 20 meters (50 - 65 ft), perfect as the more athletic of the students would see, for climbing. Branches came lower at varying heights, allowing the perfect perches and rest for lookouts and jump attacks. The branches had varying degrees of green on them, but there was still enough to provide a good among of cover.
He had led the class to a small path and clearing that was just before the forest, today was going to be an on-field experience.
He cleared his throat, gathering his class to attention.
“Hello everyone! Good afternoon! Nice to see all of you who decided to make it to class on this fine Spring day! Hope we didn’t leave anyone behind back at the Academy… Hehe.” Tipping his fedora to the students, he gave a bit of a laugh to lighten to the mood. “Well, welcome everyone to your Grim Hunting Class! Eh, that’s not really the name for it, but you get what I mean. Today, we’re not actually hunting Grimm though, so sorry about that. They wouldn’t let me around the cages for some reason or another.”
He gave another chuckle, before waving his hand. From his scroll, he projected a large viewing screen for all the students to see. It was a gridded map of the large section of the forest. A large number of dots were concentrated near a corner square.
“Today class, we’re going to be playing hide and seek!” He made the announcement with another big smile. There were a few expected looks of confusion from the small crowd, but Jay had really expected that. He then went on to explain the rules of this game. “It’s a little bit different from the kind of hide and seek you’re probably used to, but the basics are the same. A group of four students will be given a twenty-second headstart to go hide somewhere in the forest. One student, designated the Seeker, will then go searching for them! Once the tags a Hider then the Hider is obligated to help them find the others! The game continues until the timer runs out or until all Hiders are found.” Those were the basics, really all it was was hide and seek with a bit of a huntsmen twist. With another wave of his hand, the timer showed on the screen that would eventually start its countdown once the game began.
“Now, remember kids, I’ll be watching.” The screen showed several live-feed cameras, all showing different areas of the forest. Most of them were tree shots of branches and the foliage below, however, there was an area that seemed to be made of old stone walls and pillars, two walls to be exact, with some broken pillars around them. Relics of some forgotten past? Perhaps also a good hiding place. “The usual combat rules apply here. No use of lethal force. Weapons and combat are allowed, but a Hider is considered ‘tagged’ if they make physical contact with a Seeker or if a Seeker hits you with a bullet or other projectile. Now, the ammo allowed are blanks so it's going to hurt a lot but just walk it off and you should be fine without your aura shattering.” He paused for a few chuckles to sound out of his audience. “Now, if you’re a Hider and are spotted, but can somehow escape without getting caught then, by all means, you’re free to run away and continue hiding.” He looked around to his students, wondering if any caught the idea of challenge in his voice. Perhaps some kids could surprise him with their abilities, perhaps some not.
Many students would have already realized, this wasn’t just a game. It was a practice of strategy, tracking and hiding, but most of all hunting. It was an experience of both being the hunter and the prey.
“Okay, first group up!”
On the projected screen five names and five pictures would display for all to see who would come to play first.
Qiu'li
Rosario Rosada
Nikolas Burzanov
Caelum Ashworth
“And let’s see who’s ‘it?’”
A final name and picture appeared on the screen, a Faunus girl.
Niraya Platinum.
Jay crossed his arms, motioning for the five of them to all step up. He nodded once to the group, before flashing another signature smile. “Alright boys, get ready for your headstart. Find a good place to hide to give Miss Platinum a challenge, huh?”
He looked ahead, tipping his fedora one last time. The timer on the main screen showed 20.
It was time for the game to begin!
