Teacher said it would be a good idea to put me against one of the current first years, so they could have an idea of where I stand in regard to the rest of the class. And what areas we needed to improve to put me on par with them.
I was let known in advance I would be fighting today, so I had time to get prepared as much as I could. I unceremoniously tossed my uniform on the bed and donned a cream colored tunic fastened with a brown belt and tied my hair in a ponytail.
-Flips or no flips? Nah, they’ll just get in the way- Before I went to face the music, I took a small pouch the size of a baseball ball and filled it to the brim with moist and warm soil. Content with the sizable amount, I fastened the pouch to the backside of my belt and made my way to the fighting grounds with Nereida resting on my shoulder, a single charge of water dust already in the chamber.
It was just a friendly spar, so I didn’t want to blow up all of my budget on it, even this lonely charge I’d only use if things really went south.
I had just arrived to Haven, so I didn’t have any idea of what techniques or fighting styles were at their disposal... But on the other hand, they didn’t know anything about me either, so we were even in that.
As even as I could be with someone with months of training and practical experience in one of the more prestigious combat schools on the planet... Yay me... What an amazing first day of school, getting my ass kicked in front of the rest of the class.
Anyway. Since I wouldn’t solve anything with whining and complaining, I stretched a little to warm up my body for what was next to come.
Once I arrived, the room was full and the teacher was already motioning for me to hurry my ass up as my opponent was already waiting for me; and she was not an easy one to miss in a room. Towering above myself and most of the female students on Haven, waited a tanned faunus with vibrant white hair and an attire that left very little to imagination.
“That... That’s not a girl! That’s a grown ass woman! How's that fair?”
Besides that, my attention could have been drawn to her gauntlets... If not for my eyes subconsciously drifting to other, more revealing parts of her frame. “H-how am I supposed to fight if I can’t even take my eyes of those... Those... Monstrosities!” If that was her intention, well I had to admit she got me there.
Welp. No use being a bitch about it, nodding in her direction I approached the voluptuous faunus trying as best as I could to keep my eyes to her face... A difficult task for my neck when she had at least a full head of height on me.
-Hey what's up? Name’s Bianca, nice to make you acquaintance, hope we have a good match- Not overly formal and submissive nor disrespectful and cocky, as vanilla as a greeting could get.
After the initial salutation, I went to my side of the ring and waited for the fight to begin with Nereida pointed directly at the woman and the pouch of dirt on my back already rustling and ready to spring to action as soon as I gave the order.

War upon stone and it grows weaker. War upon man and he grows stronger.
Which shall your wall be built of?
❝
Just another day in class. Slate stretched as she waited, limbering up her arms and legs with a few practice swings and squats, rotating her joints and feeling the slight pops from her bones as she did so. It was enjoyable and calming in its own way, but one could only stretch so long before the act become boring, so Slate just seated herself on a nearby chair and busied herself with farming experience orbs on her Scroll for a few minutes before the new girl finally showed up. Said Scroll was probably going to get damaged in the fight if she kept it on her, so she slid it onto a nearby desk for collection later.
A hand was raised in greeting as she entered the small arena, moments before her opponent did, and a grin quickly blossomed on her face, though, when the other's eyes flicked quickly towards her chest before they were clearly forced up to meet her own golden eyes. It wasn't a reaction that she was unfamiliar with, and one that she had definitely gotten used to by now, but it was usually the boys who were that obvious about it, and not another girl who had a set of her own. She'd even dressed up for the cold weather of Mistral as compared to the warmer climes of Menagerie and Shirohoshi, but even so, it seemed that she was still able to garner those reactions without even trying. She wondered how much more of said reactions she could get if she did, and the grin grew just a little wicked. It seemed like she wouldn't be bored in this fight after all. Tail flicking lazily from side to side behind her, the wolf Faunus gave her opponent a second once over before she responded with a wink as she tilted her head slightly to the side, the ears atop her head perked up and alert.
"Like what you see?"
The words were delivered with just enough sultry smokiness to push the boundaries a little, though she couldn't help but laugh immediately after.
"Don't worry, I'm just joshin' ya. Name's Slate. Slate Seraphine. Gonna toss some fireballs at you, maybe take a few swings. Nothing serious, yeah?"
Still chuckling to herself, Slate took up her position on the other side of the ring and took up a stance of her own. Balancing on the balls of her feet, she bobbed up and down on the spot slightly with her fists held up in front of her torso. It was a good opening pose from which she could easily respond to an early assault or transition into a sprint, keeping herself light on her feet. The other reason for it was that it also made for a very good distraction by making her chest bounce a little as well. The motion kept people focused on her torso and away from her feet, which was exactly how she intended to use it. As soon as the signal to start was given, Slate launched herself forward with as much force as she was able, closing the distance between her and Bianca with enough speed to surprise anyone who hadn't already seen her in action. A fireball was tossed from her right gauntlet as she did so, but the bulk of her focus was getting in close to Bianca where her spear's superior reach would be a hindrance rather than an advantage.
Maybe she could ask her out for drinks later? Sounded like a good idea, anyway.

-... Do you wanna find out?- I responded stupidly at the oldest and more “developed” faunus as the hair of my neck started to rise up at pretty much the same rate my mouth was getting dry.
... Seriously Bianca? What kind or response is that!? Are you an idiot, a pig or something more in the middle?!
In actuality I just spat out the first thing that came to mind, but still I tried to make it sound cool even if in the end I failed obstreperously.
I nervously laughted alongside her, feeling that somehow I had managed to salvage the whole situation without looking too much like a... I don’t even know how to call it, not even the slightest clue in that regard.
-Ok thanks for the advice, I’ll probably trow some dirt at ya... Not in the trash talking sense, like, literally use earth as a weapon. So watch out for that and let's have some fun- I said as I immediately turned around as to hide the slight reddening of my face.
Not that this match meant anything at all, so I could return the kindness and give her a little headstart on my semblance. Well, time to go business mode.
The woman took a close knitted, versatile stance while bouncing lightly on her feet like a boxer would... And she was doing it on purpose... She HAD to be doing it on purpose, there’s no way a girl could be so oblivious as what her movements were doing to a certain part of her anatomy that now the whole class could see in all of their glory.
So dazzled with this I was, that I was taken by surprise when the faunus just launched herself in my direction like a speeding train. Still, I had been waiting for her so it basically meant that I got what I wanted in the end. Even if those knuckles of hers were looking specially dangerous right now.
Even so, my training kicked up on the right moment allowing me to lightly move the hand closest to the handle to immediately veer the point of the spear in the direction of my opponent like I was operating a simple lever.
Let it not be said that Slate Seraphine was not a woman of her word, for just as she had warned me I found myself in the direct path of an incoming flaming projectile almost as soon as the match had begun.
Being caught off-guard, I tried my best to deflect the fireball with the flat of my spear even knowing that I probably could fail, in the meanwhile I had to start thinking about a counter attack as soon as possible unless I wanted the speeding form of Slate to take that opportunity from me.
Luckily, she was coming right into the reach of my semblance, and I was not one to go hiding information with the people I was going to spend years training with and who would eventually see me using it anyway.
Commanding the earth to come to life, I separated the fistful of dirt into a myriad of small little pellets hardened to the point they resembled solid stone and sent them as a horizontal rain into the woman’s direction with the power and speed of a shotgun blast. Being extra careful as to not yeeting them outside my zone of influence, had that happen many times as to not learn to be careful.
In regard to my body proper, I hadn’t had many options, so I sided with the classic “Stab the hell out of it” approach, giving a solid step forward when I judged the faunus was close enough and thrusting at her center mass with as much strength and skill as I could muster.
Whatever happens, let’s hope for the best on this one.
