The Amity Colosseum was a real marvel of modern engineering. Introduced six years ago at the 10th Vytal Festival, the structure is an enormous levitating arena that can move vast distances, making the journey to the host Kingdom every time the festival is held, so this time floated all the way from its home base in Atlas to Mistral for the Thirteenth Vytal Festival.
The Amity Colosseum has a distinctive inverted cone shape that tapers to a point at the bottom where an enormous dust crystal powers the structure. Located above the main dust crystal are two levels of docking bays for air buses and other transportation to receive and offload passengers. Large archways lead passengers to the seating area which surrounds the arena. The seating area is the largest of any permanently airborne structure in the world, comfortably able to seat eighteen thousand people from across Remnant. The closest ring of seating to the arena itself are red seats reserved for contestants of the Vytal Festival itself along with other VIPs that typically include faculty members of both combat schools and Huntsman Academies along with the occasional politician or high flight businessman.
Above the seating area are huge holographic screens, which display the aura monitors for tournament matches, as well as videos of the matches in progress to include action replays and commercials. The tournament presenters in a small booth above the top level of the seating area, and for this tournament rotate out but always form some combination of two individuals who are either current faculty members of a Big Four Academy, or former finalists of the tournament itself.
The audience is protected by an invisible force field which prevents projectiles and other objects from leaving the fighting area powered by hard light dust. When hit, the force field pulses a light blue color and ripples around the impact. It can prevent flying contestants from smashing into the spectator stands and is also able to absorb stray bullets or semblance attacks.
The tournament matches themselves take place in a large octagonal arena measuring 150 meters in diameter. The arena can change its environment into several different "biomes", including grasslands, forest, fire, ice, geyser fields, stormy mountains, desert, an ocean and beach with a wooden ship, city ruins, gravity arenas, and a swamp. The arena also has artificial weather effects, such as thunderstorms and an artificial sun. In all matches, the central octagonal section measuring 50 meters in diameter remains the same regardless of the biome.
During the two on two round, the arena is split evenly into four biomes, which are chosen randomly at the beginning of every fight for each section of the arena. For this this particular match in the first year bracket, the biomes randomly chosen were, going clockwise around the area, as follows: mountains, volcanoes, and two grasslands.
To the Northeast of the arena, the combatants can see a rocky landscape, starting as patchy foothills, relatively low to the ground (1-2 meters above the central combat area) and quickly rising into a steep mountain face, culminating in a few peaks, dozens of meters high. Atop the tallest of these peaks, at 100 meters up, a storm is constantly brewing, scattering the stony world with fierce lightning and booming thunder every few seconds. With all of the mountains, Mistralians will feel quite at home here, for sure.
To the Southeast, and directly behind Team HARP, the combatants can see a hellish landscape of molten lava and steamy red rocks. Thank the brothers for aura, because hot plumes of flame and ash rocket out of the handful of volcanoes, about three of them, each 50 meters high, placed around the arena. Smog fills the acrid air with the scent of sulfur.
And to the West, the combatants can see a field of tall grass, standing at about 3 meters high for the most part, sunny and probably pretty pleasant, if they weren’t about to fight there. Tall grass and gentle rolling hills make this one of the more open spaces, with few environmental hazards. Valeians are bound to feel the most at home here. Team BCSN would be set up in the Northwest quarter of the starting arena.
This match would be fought between two of Haven Academy’s first year teams: Team BCSN (Buckskin), led by Jacqueline Bariole, and Team HARP (Harp), led by Erytheia Hellebore. The crowd roared with excitement as the big screens lit up with the faces of the eight students preparing for their match, along with their names and Aura levels. Of the eight pictures, four were greyed out, indicating that these students would not be involved in this two on two match: from BCSN, Carmim Clover and Slate Seraphine, and from HARP, Arrats Calanthe and Rin Hellebore.
Up in the commentators' booth, which was projected onto another big screen for the crowds to see, was the dark-bearded, heavy-set, Atlas Academy professor, Gorm Liath, looking a little less tense than he had in the first round, and grey-haired, fiery-eyed, 12th Vytal Festival winner, Ashton Soot, formerly of Beacon Academy.
The first to speak was the decidedly more animated Ashton Soot, shouting loudly through the microphone, with a voice made for sports announcing. "Hellooooooooo, Mistral!! We are coming to you live tonight with one heck of a good match-up! Moving on from the first round, in the blue corner, we've got two of Team BCSN's finest, Jacqueline Bariole, and Nasrin Goldbar!"
"Golbahar, lad."
"What did I say...? Ah, well, anyways, and in the literally red corner- whoo, lovin' that volcano!- we've got two of the stars of their last fight, Erytheia Hellebore and Rose Phoenix! Say, did you know that Ery and Rin Hellebore are actually cousins, not sisters? Sorry for any misinformation last round, everyone!" He grinned, proud of himself for not repeating the same blunder he'd made in the last match. "So anyways! You all know me, by now, I hope, but for those out of the loop, I'm Ashton Soot, passing the torch from Vytal 23 AV! And I'm honored and pleased to be here with my cohost, all the way from Atlas, Gorm Liath of Team COAL." The older man nodded, smiling a little awkwardly as he spoke into his own mic, much softer than Ashton.
"Aye, well, I'm glad t'be here as well. It's lookin' t'me like this match could go a couple ways, dependin'. BCSN has a nice, wide-open, area to fight in, if they choose t'fight in their biomes, and HARP has a lot of options for maneuverin'- big, tall, mountains they can climb up, or if they're feelin' lucky, the volcano biome's ripe with built-in traps for opponents on the offensive. Or they could stick to the tried and true this year, and duke it out in the middle, I suppose." Ashton nodded, a self-satisfied smirk on his face.
"Well, I know what I would do. But that wouldn't be fun at all if I just gave away the winning strategy at the start of the match, huh? Either way, my money's totally on Team HARP. They kicked major butt last fight, and I got a good feeling about them in this one too."
The older man chuckled, a wide smile spread across his face, lifting his bushy moustache with its mirth. "Oh, do ye, lad? Well, we'll see for ourselves, won't we? I won't underestimate Team HARP, but I think you're not givin' Team BCSN credit where's due. Either way, this ought t'be an excitin' match."
The crowd murmured with excitement as the two home teams took their positions. They would have a few minutes to place themselves and come up with strategies to win, but once the timer ticked down, it would be time to begin. Each team could set up anywhere within their quadrant, and proper positioning would definitely be an asset to a good match.
"Alright guys, let's have a good, clean, fight! 3... 2... 1...! Showtime!"
