Things started to look better with Nina taking some of the survey beacons for herself. And with Ruqa taking care of securing the cannon and the people around it. It looked much safer to venture towards the outskirts of the site to see if I could get a glimpse of the general situation.
And apparently, Chloro and some interns were already working on fixing the cannon. So that was another line of defense in case things went south. So I felt confident enough to leave the site for good.
I was busying myself doing that when a sudden noise caught my attention. A gust of wind blew a couple leaves from the nearby threes, making a rustling sound and drawing my gaze.
-What the hell...- I wondered aloud as I saw what appeared to be a very tall person. Even taller than Berwyn, who was the tallest person I had ever met, with the notable exception of that bull-man who sometimes roamed around Haven.
But something was clearly off about this... Thing. If the skin as dark as coal and the bony plates of armor covering its body were not enough of an indication. The bizarre way in which it moved and stared at the terrified Wineswind would be enough to clue anyone in to the nature of this creature.
The mercenary girl ran away. Not that I could blame her. And the Grimm followed suit. I was already running behind them when they entered the forest. I felt a small pit on my stomach when I watched the back of the creature as I got closer and closer to it.
It was definitely something I had never seen before. Its humanoid frame was very recognizable. But it wasn’t an Apathy, of that I was sure. That shit was something else. And although I was a bit scared, I knew it wouldn’t be pretty if I let it get its claws on the drunk mercenary.
But just as I was about to scream for the mercenary to fall behind me. A black paw covered in bone plates swung for my face and would have given me a pretty nasty slap if not for me instinctually ducking under it. Striking at the assailant with my tail as I rolled away from the danger.
Now having a second to look at it, I could see it was a Beowulf. My tail slap had broken his legs, so now he was trying to claw at me pathetically from the floor. Taking out my spear, I finished him up by cutting his head off in a single slash.
Attuning my senses to my surroundings, I realized I had been quite careless in my approach. I could feel a dozen of soul-less presences all around me. Watching, waiting. And I could only swear as I realized things were going to be more complicated than I anticipated.
Whatever the fuck that tall Grimm was, it seemed like it had brought friends with him.
Dark red eyes stared at me from amidst the foliage. Some high in the trees and some stalking me from a low stance on the ground. They were simple Grimm, basic ones. Beowolves all of them. But they seemed a little more clever than usual. Usually, they would be pouncing at me from the moment they noticed my presence.
Of course, some couldn’t resist the temptation and ended up eating a mouthful of metal for their trouble. But the fact remained the same. This led me to believe that either there was an elder Grimm nearby. Something like an alpha leading the pack of lesser Grimm... Or that the weird, humanoid-looking one was responsible for holding them back.
In any case, the brief confrontation soon turned into a brawl. I managed to dispatch the Grimm around me with relative ease, but that still kept me busy for long enough that Wineswind was now out of my sight. So I would need to track her and the Grimm again if I wanted to help her take down whatever that big Grimm was.
Still... I knew for sure that the small pocket of Beowolves that I took down were not the only ones around me. The forest was deadly silent, with no animals around us, not even a bird. It meant bigger, worse predators were roaming around.
I didn’t know if I had the time to track and kill every last Grimm in the area. Not with the mercenary running away for her life. And the negativity that such a thing would create for even more Grimm to pool around us.
Clicking my tongue, I took out my scroll once again and sent another message in the general channel. Lamenting myself about how much shit seemed to be going on at the same time. I only hopped the people back in the camp were holding out okay.
-Bianca here. There are more Grimm in the forest. And the mercenary leader is being chased by... Something. A Grimm I have never seen before. Over-
And with that, I began advancing in the direction of Wineswind once again. More cautious this time. Keeping an eye open for any nasty surprises the Grimm may have in store for me.
